It's really dated in a lot of ways. But the Tundra based chassis and powertrain are tried and true. My 2007 Tundra 5.7 TRD Pro is still going strong at 100K miles despite being really long in the tooth. As others have mentioned the interior hasn't changed enough since the larger Tundra platform was launched in 2007. Overlanding, camping and tow capacity are this things gig. Would not buy a new one, but a gently used 2-3 year old could be the perfect family camper capable of towing toys or a small travel trailer. For a couple you could just fold all the rear seats for a sleeping area and add a rear suv tent for a lets go camping on a whim rig. Anything this big is not going to go places a Jeep or serious mid-size truck will no matter what the brand. WAY over priced new, the Expedition and Tahoe offer a lot more bang for the buck if you don't plan on keeping it more than 5 years or so.
They are made in different factories. Expect more harmony when the Tacoma's southern migration to Mexico creates a space for the Sequoia to be made alongside the Tundra in San Antonio.
About the fuel economy...this SUV is no worse than my 13 Taco. Considering this thing is almost double in power than my 4.0 V6...not that bad. GM and FORD may have more tech but it will all break because all they build is junk. I have owned it in the past...am done with GM and FORD. Toyota for me is the very best.
Yup. The EPA tests made the manufacturers build cars to bear the tests, but but actually get good mileage or driveability in the real world. Traded in my v6 4R today on one of these. I'm pretty sure every thing that's pointed out as a negative, about the Sequoia, is a positive for me. Other than the truly horrible gas mileage
It's such a niche market that if you're going to have one, then it needs to be full send. Have a locking rear, front diff and proper transfer case, have proper off road tires minimum 33", heck, include a winch. Having it in this configuration doesn't appeal to the regular SUV buyer nor does it appeal to the off road enthusiast SUV buyer.
And yet they sell everyone that hits the lot. What other suv do you know of that has front and rear lockers and a winch that comes standard? It would be much more than what it costs now and then would not appeal to all the people that it does now.
Back 2008 they sold around 30k and for the last 12 years only 10-12k sequoia sold a year. Seems pretty low for modern assembly lines to produce such a low number of trucks . Probably are built on the same line as a Tundra. Does anyone work at Toyota and knows how they do it?
These are built in the same plant with the Highlander . We only build 30 or 40 a day . Production will move to texas with the tundra in a couple years. I handle a few of the parts for the sequoia.
They are built on the same platform as the Tundra. So many inter-changeable parts. That's the only reason Toyota hasn't discontinued it due to dismal sales.
Agreed. Similar to the Land Cruiser. $80k+ for essentially a slightly smaller Sequoia is insane. I love my Toyotas but the pricing for the pro line is absurd.
@@cobaltgofast yep. I love them though but I also want a travel trailer in the future. So a 3/4 ton would make way more sense as I could bring the whole family. But there's just something special about having a trd pro despite its lack of capabilities lmao
gamersetc. That's why I got my Tundra but I don't plan on getting anything too large since it's just my wife, young son, and I. Maybe later in life I'll step up to a big boy diesel but not just yet ha.
@@cobaltgofast ya that's true. I like the tundras as they are just bulletproof. Never have to worry about the "what if" scenario. I think the tow rating on the tundra is 10000 lbs I believe? You could get a good size travel trailer with those capabilities.
Weird center strip removal - maybe for maps? I prefer maps over GPS, and that looks like a potential place for tri-folding maps. And very much agree with the interior color. Many vehicles have adopted this and it just feels like a coffin. My #1 gripe is the tire size. With 18" wheels, it doesn't give you much sidewall for lowering PSI for off pavement. 17's would have been better. As far as price - for that much money why buy this? There are so many better options for less that give you so much more capability for Off Road. Wouldn't consider this for over landing - there are better options that keep you way below this price point.
Be patient, a redesigned Sequoia is coming in 2022. I feel it was delayed for the 300 series Land Cruiser which shares a frame with this and the tundra. The land cruiser is coming as a 2021 model.
Is the Sequoia or 4Runner a better family car for trips to the snow? I like the Sequoia because it has space for gear /luggage but is it too big to be decent in the snow/mud? How do they drive on-road?
I don’t care about the interior and all the fancy gimmicks that cost a mortgage to repair on modern vehicles. I’d rather have something I know won’t leave me stranded and the rugged capability is pretty nice on top of that.
Man I don’t understand why toyota gives led lights to all the models besides the 4Runner which is one of the most popular vehicles with the most infamous reputation alongside the land cruiser. Ford coming out with the bronco, the wrangler is modernized, and toyota finally gave us led lights in the 2021 4runner. Love toyota and my 4runner and wouldn’t buy anything else but we should’ve gotten basic led lights years and years ago. But can’t wait for the 6th gen 4runner and new land cruiser coming soon!!!!
To me, it looks somewhat 'out-of-date'. On Canadian pricing, and at full MSRP this Toyota would cost me some $95,450.00,..that's out the door, which is a bit on the extreme side. I'm glad therefore that the Sequoia has some very good competition, and then again,...I am NOT in the market for a vehicle of this size,..so my points may be mute!
I don't think toyota interior's are outdated they just keep it simple yet durable less doodads more practicality knobs switched don't fall apart like other brands
We all know the Sequoia will outlast its competitors. Also that weird space between the shifter and the cup holders is a perfect place to hold a handgun. It's the same in my 2010 tundra and that's exactly what I use it for
I checked one out at a dealership, and thought that the seats were 10x more comfortable than the 4Runner I have,. But comparing interiors, Toyota is getting decimated. I'd still go for it, though.
Have 19 4runner and came from a 12 Tahoe and man its like I didn't upgrade I got less but it is good motor i don't care give me both for a premium price
Love my 2012 Sequoia and would buy it instead of any full size competition again today. I plan to keep it forever and I would have zero confidence in doing that with any of the competition. My friends Ford Expedition from the same year is in the junk yard and mine is still driving like the day I bought it.
This car is for driving over rough roads and rocky trails in parks and such. It may not be for serious off roading, but it is very important for people wanting to get off the normal trail where rocks will bounce up and break stuff under the car and getting you where you need to go under almost all road and weather conditions. Plus it is a vehicle you can sleep in or take a ton of stuff with you. It is the most practical adventure car out there with the exception of gas mileage. On top of that, it is made to last 300,000 plus miles. People keep asking for all these technical things on cars and trucks, but they are just more things to break and will increase the expense of owning these vehicles for very little benefit.
Outdated feeling? In two years that Sequoia will still be worth twice as much as the Chevy or Ford. So if your only requirement is a flashy interior then by the Chevy or Ford that will lose a quarter to half of their value in two years.
@@putmeincoach7663 The idiot tax. You buy a Chevy, Dodge, or Ford and every other weekend you're going to be sitting at the dealership having them fix something that's under warranty that should not have broken in the first place.
@@theylied1776 Same applies. You will pay more for a Toyota than any other brand with comparable mileage and the same model year. 10 years ago, I would've argued alongside you that it was worth it. However, Toyota got complacent and has been resting on their laurels of the 90's and early 2000's, while quality has slipped and innovation has fallen to nil.
I drive a first gen Sequoia with 300k+ miles with no major issues. For where I live, I need it's better-than-crossover capability for muddy and snowy/icy roads and I carpool often with 5+ other people (that helps offset the fuel bill!) They remark regularly on the build quality, ride quality, spaciousness and features (otherwise they wouldn't ride with me I guess!).I did upgrade the OG 6-disk radio with a Nav/back-up camera unit and that helped with the "outdatedness" of it. Otherwise, it's been comfortable, functional and a pleasure to drive....apart from the fuel mileage.
100% agree with everything. I drive Lyft XL in my 2006 Sequoia. The looks, features, and reliability all convinced me to purchase it December last year. "Its been comfortable, functional, and a pleasure to drive...apart from the fuel millage." Totally agree.
You convincetly failed to mention that it has lane keep and adaptable cruiser control. It's got every bell and wistle. What are you complaining about it being updated. Dont complain about fuel milage. This a specific vehicle. The people who purchase this have no complains. I dont get what do you want? Your parroting what ever other mindless weekend car reviewer says because they have nothing better have done 0 research. You have power seats, sun roof, navigation, leather seats, updated infotainment, powerful v8. Reservoir shocks, skid plates, led fog lights, rear leg room is leading class. Its interior is more spacious than the land cruiser and just as spacious as the Toyota minivan. JBL audio updated speakers. Double glove departments. The only difference between the expedition is that it's got leather on the dash. That's what you modern??🤣
you have some good points, huge lexus fan here and I have the new LX right now, I so wanted to buy the sequoia but it looks very plasticky from inside. it really needs an update, its basically the same car as in 2008. yes it has all the bells and whistles but I wish they made the nav screen bigger, front camera, keyless start came in couple of years ago? . I dont even know if this has the 360 camera or even the front camera the land cruiser in 2008 came with. They have the tech I cant understand why not just put in the sequoia. It looks mean and I would buy this any day over ford but its about time they update this.
Nailed it! All that safety stuff standard than some don't even offer is standard on the tundra and sequoia. You can get nav, heated and cooled leather seats, jbl sound system, tons of room amd a danm good ride on the highway a while habing insane resale value and reliability. Ill take the poor fuel economy over that cylinder deactivation and direct injection crap that carbons up your valves. It a simpler engien without a the gimmicks and thats why I like it. Its an honest good v8.
Well the interior isn't quite as nice as other brands and the fuel mileage, well Ram can get over 20 out of a 5.7l V8. So why can't Toyota make a 5.7l V8 get better than a measly 13 mpg city and 17 mpg highway? It would be kind of a cool overland build but the range has a potential to be a little problematic. But with that being said, I'm not bashing Toyota in anyway I'm just saying things that people complain about often. My personal interior expectations are lower due to growing up with "poor people cars" but I do wish they offered more colors besides a bland black with white headliner and a rough 13 mpg.
@@private6549 it definitely isn't as fuel efficient as the current domestic offerings, but the 10.5 inch 4.30 rear end has alot to do with that. Interior to me isn't that bad, definitely a subjective thing, because for me it is fine, I don't need a flat screen tv sized display in my dash. It does come standard with toyotas safety sense with autonomous braking and lazer guided cruise control, which are either only available on the higher trim levels or not available at all in some other trucks. Only thing it really needs is a 360 birds eye view camera system. Features like full roll down back glass has been available since the first gen crew cab, and adjustable headlights via a dial on the dash has been offered since 07. The big 3 still do not offer either of those two features. Navigation and 8 inch screen (i think its 8 inches) is standard even on the base model, you can get heated amd cooled leather seats and a JBL stereo, the 5.7 is standard, and it does offer a 36 gallon tank now, keyless entry and keyless start,, remote start, full LED headlights and driving lights, so reallt what else could you really ask for in a truck other than better fuel economy? A fully loaded out platinum or 1794 stickers for just over 50k, and if you negotiate you can have one just under 50k like my brother did. Thats what you pay for a regular XLT f150, more if you get a well optioned lariat, and astronomical if you go platinum, king ranch, and downright insane if you go limited. So what you can get for 50k in a tundra is actually a pretty good value.
How do you get to it quickly? It’s an awkward angle. I just purchased a 2021, it’s difficult to gain access. Or do you just pull the cup holders out and grab it?
Stick out infotainment system is the worst trend that needs to go immediately, like doesn’t matter how good the material and the design are, the fact they are so lazy to smash a screen straight into the center council just so bad.

I cant see why they don’t put the tundra’s interior in the sequoia. It eould make it look so much better.
They are made in different factories. Expect more harmony when the Tacoma's southern migration to Mexico creates a space for the Sequoia to be made alongside the Tundra in San Antonio.
@Ike N They are selling approximately 1,000 Sequoias per month so I suppose limited investment is prudent.
Totally agree. It’s kind of an appearance package with very little off-road credibility.
Man, it sure looks good though.
Exactly.
Johnny Cage Land Cruiser gets all the 4wd toys.
And yet they sell everyone that hits the lot. What other suv do you know of that has front and rear lockers and a winch that comes standard? It would be much more than what it costs now and then would not appeal to all the people that it does now.
candid. wish they had a 4 runner prime phev . like rav4 but beefcake.
It’s a nice vehicle but for being so old that price is outrageous. I like it enough to pay 45-50 but not a dime more than that
Ya seriously 50k max but that price is outrageous
You could get a good size travel trailer with those capabilities.
my koya has 330 k. smooth as butter... closer to 3 $ grand... will keep for now.
love that truck
This thing is so archaic and old ... but, so am I. I want one.
Wouldn't consider this for over landing - there are better options that keep you way below this price point.
buying a used 2011 sequoia and doing suspension mods is a lot cheaper, since this is the same vehicle 🤔
Always with the good videos. A+
I bought a 2002 sequoia about a year ago lets see if its a good buy letting the fuel economy to the side. Lol
Dismissing the fuel economy for sure lol. I bought my 2006 model in December last year.
The sequoia needs a redesign badly. Like ground up redesign. This thing is overpriced and under delivering
Be patient, a redesigned Sequoia is coming in 2022. I feel it was delayed for the 300 series Land Cruiser which shares a frame with this and the tundra. The land cruiser is coming as a 2021 model.
@@damilolaakanni if toyota was redesigning the land cruiser we woulda heard about it
Just like the 4runner
Too expensive, SR5 version?
Is the Sequoia or 4Runner a better family car for trips to the snow? I like the Sequoia because it has space for gear /luggage but is it too big to be decent in the snow/mud? How do they drive on-road?
Can anyone explain why one of the biggest SUVs on the market in 2020 has less headroom than a Honda Civic...
I didn't even know they still make the sequoia
I don’t care about the interior and all the fancy gimmicks that cost a mortgage to repair on modern vehicles. I’d rather have something I know won’t leave me stranded and the rugged capability is pretty nice on top of that.
Its an sr5 with upgraded shocks for an extra $15k
Man I don’t understand why toyota gives led lights to all the models besides the 4Runner which is one of the most popular vehicles with the most infamous reputation alongside the land cruiser. Ford coming out with the bronco, the wrangler is modernized, and toyota finally gave us led lights in the 2021 4runner. Love toyota and my 4runner and wouldn’t buy anything else but we should’ve gotten basic led lights years and years ago. But can’t wait for the 6th gen 4runner and new land cruiser coming soon!!!!
I was disappointed my '20 runner has hallogens, but at least I don't have to worry about spending a small fortune if they break.
Still better than anything 2024
Toyota should update the interior like 4Runner
To me, it looks somewhat 'out-of-date'. On Canadian pricing, and at full MSRP this Toyota would cost me some $95,450.00,..that's out the door, which is a bit on the extreme side.
I'm glad therefore that the Sequoia has some very good competition, and then again,...I am NOT in the market for a vehicle of this size,..so my points may be mute!
Reg Sparkes Moot
@@grisa12345 Hahaha,..I wondered if I misspelled that too!
I don't think toyota interior's are outdated they just keep it simple yet durable less doodads more practicality knobs switched don't fall apart like other brands
Sequoia TRD Pro Diesel. Build it Toyota
I’d rather buy used Land Cruiser
For me the best is the 20’ sequoa
Does the TRD Pro version offer 8-seats configuration?
6000lbs , no transfer case , no lockers , no way ...forget it, this is a recipe for getting stuck, no way would I risk this over landing.
It just doesn't get any better than a Sequoia.
Front end looks good. Towards the rear quarters it looks like a dodge caravan 😬
Inside and out it looks ancient.
I have no idea why anyone would consider buying this over the new GM suv’s, especially the 2021 models.
jjblue23 because Toyota’s will last forever
Its like everybody is obsessed with Tesla screens
you are crazy! i own one and it is nice.
Súper save ....
No crawl control on the Tundra either
Спасибо за обзор! Секвойя лучший авто!
Bro we didn't buy these for gas mileage. The sequoia is leading the class have you ever taken a Tahoe or expedition off road stop it
I love my Sequoia.
Safe, reliable and extremely comfortable for 8.
My friends, this vehicle has every reason to exist. Period.
Decimated. Lol
the sequoia has much more interior room than 4runners
I like the old knobs, they always work, and no distraction while driving. previous ram had big huge touch screen that acted up all the time.
Honestly, I'm worried about what's under the hood more than the design. It can be 'outdated' as long as it gets things done.
Garnet Torres Sizemore So then why buy a new car? If all you care about how it drives why pay a premium for a new car?
He didn’t say “how it drives but how it gets things done and reliability”.
Buy a model T
im same way !!!!!!!!!!!

Love my 2012 Sequoia and would buy it instead of any full size competition again today. I plan to keep it forever and I would have zero confidence in doing that with any of the competition. My friends Ford Expedition from the same year is in the junk yard and mine is still driving like the day I bought it.
My wife and I have now owned 3 Toyotas...so well made. The very best there is...make German and American cars look like 💩💩💩
We're in the same boat. We're keeping it forever. Has a ton of power and will likely stand the test of time.
I still drive a 2001 Sequoia fully loaded
New owner of a 2006 Sequoia 4wd Limited. Really enjoy the looks, power, and feel...just gotta gulp the gas bill.
175k miles
There it is, some of us like to get a solid rig and get our value out of it in the decade or two we can milk out of these Toyotas.
Ill take old🙂
Yeah I kinda prefer the older square look
That Toyota “old” will still be around in 20 years.
Love my trd for me dont need all that technology see in 10 years if that's stuff still working
Ahh, the Toyota Tax. Pay a premium upfront and tout resale value 5 minutes later. Sillyness!
@@putmeincoach7663 it's not a tax if you don't buy them new.
@@putmeincoach7663 You pay more because the resale is higher. This isn't rocket science. This is basic economics theorem.
I see it more like an excellent, dependable trailer puller and family hauler on long vacation trips.
A full size 6000 lb SUV isn’t a rock crawler. It doesn’t need crawl control.
The interior dash looks exactly like my 2010 Tundra lmao!
I have a 2010 Tundra also and am shocked that it looks the same!
You hit the nail on the head. "300K+ miles with no major issues." Happy trails for the next 300K!
100% agree with everything. I drive Lyft XL in my 2006 Sequoia. The looks, features, and reliability all convinced me to purchase it December last year.
"Its been comfortable, functional, and a pleasure to drive...apart from the fuel millage." Totally agree.
Keep this a secret so "we" keep getting em for cheap 🤐
1st Gen for life!
I've also seen many ford expeditions with over 650,000 miles
I have a 2006 with 315k miles...1st gen sequoias are bulletproof.
Most important factor, more reliable than any Ford, GM or Chrysler/Dodge vehicle.
Of course a Canadian wouldn’t know what that long storage by the shifter is for 😊. It’s for a handgun my friend.
They do it that way to place it more in your field of vision so you're not looking down all the time.
Seems like if it makes it easier to work on that would be a good thing.
I really hope that trend goes out of style soon. That alone is a deal breaker for me
Should be a TRD off road. Not pro 🤧
Toyota will stick that TRD badge on anything to sell it. Disgraceful.
Bo Talks Ya , stay tuned , Prius TRD pro coming soon!!
I think it's because they want to separate from the land cruiser and sequoia.
That weird storage next to the cup holder is for a laptop.
Brilliant on you...I would have never guessed👍
Mike Foehr I gotta be honest only reason I know is cause I own one ,and it took me a while to figure it out myself
After lifting the storage next to the cup holder it gives you the opportunity to lift the cup holder to help you store more items in there.
