- If you're looking for a full-size SUV and reliability is more important than fuel economy or modern features, the Sequoia is for you. Unfortunately the age of this full-size people mover means that it is outclassed in gadgets, gizmos, ride quality, and efficiency by the newcomers.

I have a 2011 barely broken in at 90k miles. It’s a beast in snow, tows like a dream, is super comfy, and has tons of room for dogs and kids. Bullet proof reliability beats fuel economy for me.
I have a 2010 at 75K miles. Totally agreed with you.
Same here with 2012. You pay for it. And its worth it!
Totally with you Sequoia Brother !!
Lexus needs a version of the Sequoia in their lineup to slot between the GX and LX. the could call it the OX.
Lexus should put a front end on a tundra and sell a super high end pickup
😂

Toyota: why bother developing a new SUV when you can just keep sending the same one to UA-camrs once a year.
Alex does indeed like to re-review the exact same vehicle. Good for business, however. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” We're of course the really insane ones buying this snake oil.

@@pedrofernandez8729 They are extremely inefficient, and the V8 produces so much heat, these will end up burning oil, or leaking, like Sequoia of my father is doing, with 119,000 miles, what a joke.
We've still got our 2002 Sequoia with 300,000 miles and only minor suspension work in the last 20 years. While the powertrains are legendary, it's hard to justify the new Sequoia's interior and fuel economy.
smart!!!!!!! best family car!
Impossible to justify if you ask me. Toyota should be embarrassed selling ancient models like this. It's not like they aren't one of the largest and most profitable brands in the world, so they can definitely afford to keep their products up to date...they just choose not to.
i really like the athletic look of the 1st gen sequoias lol
@@dlg5485 if this gets redesigned on the TNGA platform only to find out that it shrinks inside cargo and passenger volume wise vs the old gen
@@naveenthemachine Any redesign obviously won't go in that direction. Toyota isn't stupid, they know from their own market research exactly what buyers want in a vehicle like this... comfort and roominess, modern tech, decent fuel efficiency, and the 'appearance' of off-road capability. Only .01 percent of owners will ever take this vehicle off the pavement, but they all want it to look like they will.

Call it old if you want to; but this thing is for someone who knows he can buy it and keep it for a very long time and not have any problems. Long after all of those products from Chrysler, Ford or GM have been recycled. Reviewer's only care about what is new. They never care about how much trouble something will be to own. At least this time he didn't incorrectly state that this truck has a solid rear axle.
Quite surprising that the Sequoia still has better handling than the Expedition despite being 10,000 years old!
Wow, Alex. I learned more in the last 29 minutes re: vehicle vs. vehicle vs. vehicle. etc., than I have been able to learn on my own in 29 days! Another fantastic review!
Been watching Doug for a while now and have to say that you do a great job on these and it’s very informative with the comparisons!
I am ok with re-reviewing year to year iterations. Although the MPG is very low, I admire the tried and true mantra. Partly why I am so happy with my new to me 2018 Tundra base model.

Lol, it has been a minutes.
This v8 will outlast all the crappy v6 turbo engines
Agreed. But they are more efficient though. I wonder how the math will work out
Alex, 'Cheaper by the foot than a Land Cruiser' I hope Toyota marketing pays you fair royalties if they adopt your carefully crafted concept. I have a CRAZY idea for the next Sequoia, how about a 2 door Sequoia like those massive Broncos and Blazers from the 70s-80s? Two tone paint would be ideal for that retro-themed variation. While we are waiting, the SR5 Sequoia is a bargain today. Finally, when discussing this 3 ton 'dinosaur', I would argue that the 'elephant in the room' is RELIABILITY across a Sequoia's typical 20+ year lifespan not Fuel Efficiency across a competitor's lifespan that is likely to be far shorter.
Did you know that GMC Hummer EV is coming with 700-1,000 horsepower before Toyota redesigns every truck/SUV with gas engines again?
I know that this is an old vehicle but I still want one of these. There is something about it that I aspire to have.

I remember checking out the 3rd row at an auto show, and hands down it was the best available. While Ford and GM had to figure out what they were doing with their rear suspension packaging, the Sequoia sat just like the second row for real people.
5 years with my 4runner and trouble free. They are made to beat the hell out it. I never slow down on speed bumps, the truck is unstoppable and will run you over. Its old but it drives and made like gold. Its hard to find anything mechanical that people complain about this vehicle.
Very good review. Tons of information in 30 minutes video.
Really like your factual comparisons comparing all models in the segment, you do a great clean informative report
It's interesting that both Toyota and Fiat Chrysler share a "if people are still buying it, why spend money to change it?" philosophy with vehicles like the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequioa, Durango, Challenger, and Charger.
Fiat Chrysler???
only brain dead morons would buy or compare those too
The Sequoia has a center differential so you can run 4 high all the times if desired. It is really a 4 auto mode.
yeah i think he made a mistake. Sequoia is all the time AWD, not part time, otherwise center lock differential button he showed would be unnecessary. The ground clearance seemed to be increased for 2021 to 12.6 at least according to the canadian website www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/vehicles/sequoia/models-specifications
It's better than 4A. 4A uses a clutch that always opens and closes, this has a torsen diff which is much better.
Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Tacoma, 4Runner.. just update the lights and call it updated. 🤦🏼♂️
Please add 8 speed transmission and some basic safety features (especially dynamic cruise control) then we're good 😀
Sad but true
And people pay more for it because they think reliability is everything, without realizing that they pay thousands extra in horrendous fuel economy for years before a different manufacturers's warranty even ends.
@@jamesinsteamboat but they won’t pay horrendous thousands of dollars for years in repairs

Imagine if Toyota put a 5L V8 engine in the Sequoia and sport tune the suspension. OMG.
Wow!!! fook the refresh, this thing is beautiful and could last forever
@Andrew Roman nice bro thank you. I hope the refresh isn’t super hot🥰
I mean if you only ever want to buy one SUV, then Toyota has you covered. Yeah, we know the MPG sucks but at least it is virtually indestructible. 20 years from now you can give this to your kid with 250,000 miles on it and it'll still be good to go.
Can’t say the same for gm w their complex dynamic cylinder skipping or ford products w their ecoboost and their over complicated 10 speed
Sure, GM may outsell everyone, but there's a good reason for that. You're expected to buy another one as soon as the loan or lease is up. Toyota may not be a best seller, but it doesn't have to be. If you take care of it you can easily hand this vehicle down to your 16-year old kid... That you're a good 5 years away from even having that child.
Love this vid!

If you have to worry about fuel you don’t need this truck. But for the rest of us we will be getting one.
On the size chart, you’re displaying the 2020 Yukon, not the 2021
You can keep it in 4wd in any conditions as it has a viscous coupling in the center diff.
i think he made a mistake. The only thing, Sequoia does not have a viscous coupling but a Torsen center differential and is all the time AWD, not part time, otherwise center differential lock button he showed would be unnecessary. The ground clearance seemed to be increased for 2021 to 12.6 at least according to the canadian toyota website.
You are right about the torsen center diff with locking feature, but i think the Sequoia is part time 4wd (the Toyota multimode system). You have option of RWD, AWD( center unlocked), 4hi/4lo (center locked)
Not viscous coupling but a mechanical torsen differential. Subaru does the viscous couplings.
@@lookasism That would make it the best 4WD system out there!

Great review and great comparison to other SUVS. That is what we are looking for - comparing it to other competitor's SUVs
Sequoia is the best SUV I have ever seen and I encourage anyone looking for an SUV which can go anywhere, should go in for Sequoia because it is the best among all
Society is getting softer. Most of the complaints I see are from people with soft hands who need heated steering wheels and air conditioned tooshies and are to lazy to reach out and turn a simple nob. Every issue has been addressed in this old platform except the fuel economy which i can deal with. It isnt a civic. And MPG isnt why we buy these. Old design? Yes. Reliable? Check! All the rugged reliability and proven performance without all the girly man bells and whistles. The peace of mind of knowing my wife and kids wont be stranded on the side of the road is priceless!
It amazes me that a vehicle like that still exists in 2020.With gas prices steadily increasing, that’s an expensive way to travel.

I think there will be a Next Generation Toyota Sequoia in 2022 for the 2023 Model Year right after the platform-mate Toyota Tundra gets redesigned for the 2022 Model Year. Hard to believe I was in Elementary School when this generation Sequoia came out.
Better fuel economy to go with the legendary reliability shouldn't be too much to ask for.
Attemps to increase fuel economy usually destroy reliability. Toyota has critical turbo issues on the new Tundra and it will take a while until it's solved.
I find it annoying that they got rid of the headlamp washers.
Am i the only one who thinks they shouldn’t do a major update on this vehicle? It’s a proven, solid powertrain and no frills. Only things that do have to be changed is the infotainment system and the transmission. Its a strong transmission but takes a while to do something. I drove a Tundra with the same powertrain and I have more confidence passing on my 140hp VW Golf because it manages its gears better.
This vehicle has a center differential so that the vehicle can be driven anywhere with 4WD engaged. The centre locking differential button would force 50/50 power split and would cause binding if used on paved roads.
Check Driving Sports TV review as he goes into this aspect in detail. If you have a different perspective please share but I thought it worth noting this as even though the Sequoia is a part-time Awd system it can be left in 4H basically making it a full-time AWD with the option to lock the differential for extreme scenarios.
toyotas for life!
These tried and true designs work so well, I wouldn't want them to change that much. It does sorely need a rear locker tho. It would be a good Samaritan's worst nightmare to rescue something this big.

I have owned a first and second generation Sequoia, Land Cruiser, LX570 and a Yukon Denali and there is something to the Sequoia that just works. It's reliability and utility are top notch and the usable third row and roll down rear window provide more usability than some of the competition. I also know several people who have had issues with their 2015 GM truck transmissions. The Sequoia just packs a lot into a slightly more compact package than the full size GMs although it could stand to be an inch or two narrower and obviously needs better fuel economy.

What if those gimmicks break? Is anyone really going to look at the Fuel savings and say “with the improved fuel savings I can afford to pay to have this gimmick fixed”
I own a newer Lexus and yes, car reliability doesn't matter much anymore. In 10 years, cars will be much more advanced and with the Dems in power, ICEs will be legislated away. Cars like mine will be obsolete dinosaurs. Why would you care about 15 year reliability when they'll inconvenience ICEs as much as possible. High carbon taxes on gas, banned from cities, etc.
@@Anonymous-ld8ox I completely agree, but at the end of the day everything has to trickle down through bureaucracy. In the US, Biden wants to put in 550,000 EV chargers across the country (the equivalent to 5 EV plugs per currently existing gas station, number wise) That takes time to build, and it takes even longer to get through state, local...etc. Same with crackdown regulations, which I imagine will increasingly vary by state...All to say don't count out reliability just yet (and congrats on the Lexus, I had a '16 IS and loved it)

Toyota simply does not care much for their North American truck market, which is insane because if they seriously updated the Tundra(coming) and this, they could easily double their selling rates. Alex said its 11 years old. Umm no, it is 14. Factoring in the 12 MPG(because Toyota puts 4.30 gears on this and the Tundra) and the woefully outdated interior(Holy Mother of panel gaps!), it is not a good buy, other than reliability and resale. But you have to live with it everyday...
Alex, u forgot to mention the Land Rover Discovery along with the 3-row crossover SUVs- The Explorer, the Durango and the Grand Cherokee L. It can more than the Jeep and Ford - 8,200 lbs, but less than the Durango.
The Disco is a mid-size according to most segment metrics. It's narrower and shorter by a reasonable amount. It's also a luxury segment vehicle so not really cross shopped.
makes me think of a 60y old actress doing Botox to look like 40y old.
Jeep and nissan both proved that old does not mean bad, bad design is just bad design. The grand cherokee and the patrol (now armada) are two very well designed vehicles. The GC actually is a segment leader despite its age, and has a better layed out interior than many vehicles with redesigns in the past couple of years. This is why, despite a ground up redesign, its not actually that different than the current model. As for the armada, it really went rounds with last gen tahoes, despite the extreme refresh in 2015. The sequoia really just had a poorly designed interior from the get go, and this is a common issue with many toyota's from the 2000's. They have fixed most of their interiors on vehicles when they were redesigned, but this hasn't had a redesign. Same goes for the land cruiser, tundra, 4runner, lx 570 and gx 460.
If this was a diesel, Toyota would have had more care in other markets
They just sell the land cruiser in those markets.
Forerunner and landcruiser are built in japan and dyno tested with specialized engineers building it and testing it. The forerunner and landcruiser are engineering marvel. The rest of the toyota line is above average in regards to durability and low problematic issues.
Fuel efficiency vs reliability?
I want to see the real math on paper. I don’t know if I can trust GM reliability especially with the cylinder deactivation that could eventually break, the complex transmissions, suspensions, power sliding console oled screens night vision augmented reality etc. those could all break and cost thousands in repairs.

HOPEFULLY, Toyota doesn't kill off this engine in the next Tundra/Sequioa
The engine is great, they just haven't invested in the right transmission for it.
With an 8-10 speed, this would do a great job for many more years to come
The problem with this powertrain are Toyota's fault, not the engine's.
Did you say Totoya Sequoia @ 0.27 s?
The bean counters at Toyota are responsible for the Tundra’s declining sales, down a paltry 100k units annually. Same with Sequoia, which also stays the same, year after year, except for its rising MSRP. It is reliable, rides good and is cheaper than the rip-offs from GM and Ford. Like my Tundra, the sequoias fully retractable rear window beats any other hinged version. I’d get the SR5 w/o 4wd and add my own wheels and tires and audio. It’s a good deal.
Is this guy is really comparing this Sequoia to a highlander...... he has really lost his mind
Dude how Highlander has more headroom then sequoia when I am at 6 ft towering the highlander.
I totally get the idea of buying something reliable instead of something with more gadgets and unproven technology. But, I'm not sure a reliable gas guzzler will age well anymore (in most the USA at least). Fuel efficiency is being pushed by governments everywhere and more EVs are coming to the market where I think EVs will be fairly mainstream for new car purchases in the next 10 years. I'd be worried about the cost of fuel and extra taxes on gas guzzlers in the coming years. I'm sure this Sequoia will last 20+ years if you maintain it but I'm not sure it'll be worth much in 10 years and it'll be expensive to fuel and potentially have extra taxes. I'd rather have something more fuel efficient even if it won't last 20 years.
If you’re spending that kind of money I really doubt fuel economy is of high importance...
If everyone goes electric, there will be more gas for me.

Door shut lines look wider than found on more modern and monocoque designs that have stiffer bodies.
"Lock the center coupling"? What does that mean? It doesn't have a center differential. And there already is a controlled for four-wheel-drive
This is a part-time 4WD system, so you have to engage the center coupling to send power to the front. It is a pretty typical 4WD T case and it is common to refer to all transfer cases and AWD PTUs as "center couplings"
@@AAutoBuyersGuide but you already describe the control for two wheel high and four wheel high. That would be the transfer case control. Why would there be a separate control? As for the use of the term center coupling; it's self-explanatory but I've never heard anybody say it

Oh boy, a twin turbo... that is a reliability nightmare just waiting to happen. Better get your indestructible V8s while they're still around I guess.
