Just went out of Santa Barbara yesterday, we’re going again in our friends Pringle again today ! It was love ❤️ at first flight yesterday, and I’m confident she’s not going to break my heart , like Bethany did! 😢
Thank you Jared for getting this up on You Tube. It brings back a lot of great memories. It's been in my storage for close to 30 years. By the way the guy at the very end, smiling is Tom Trento, he raced 15's.
This video was actually shot in San Felipe, MX, not Ensenada. Very cool to see this blast from the past. I was in the rental boat business in the late 70's and through 1987 in San Diego. We had fleets of Hobies and a few Prindles. The Prindles were everyone's favorite and always felt more lively and stiffer than their counterparts. Interesting to see Prindle dealers Ron and Debbie Lane who I knew back in the day and who now I think are more into selling kayaks and SUP. They were great people and were ideal promoters of the Prindle brand. I'm coming to this video since a friend "gifted" me a P18 which needs a little work. We've had it out for a couple sails and I had forgotten how much fun these were to sail and how fast they are. I plan to get it into shape and said the hell out of it this summer.
Aloha Prindle world..! Hi Leslie and all the Prindle gang from racing in the nationals in the 70's & 80's out of Maui & Oahu! We won a few regattas back in the day. Bought my first Prindle 16 in 1972 with Graham Bamberry. Won the Poor Man's Transpac in '75 and the Rusty Harpoon Cup in '75 & '76 and took 2nd in the Prindle Hawaii States that year. This boat was ideal in Hawaiian Trades and we didn't even like to go out unless in was blowing 20+ knots. Absolutely loved that boat and it provided some of the best times of our lives back then. The Maui Fleet raced every weekend for 5 years now there was a fun crew. Even sailed with three other boats to Oahu from Maui twice. 90 miles in heavy trades and very LARGE ocean swells. Hey Jeff & Sterling...thanks for providing so much fun for so many people! Alooooha, David Allaire< (Windline Catamaran Club - Kaanapali, Maui)
i had a Prindle 19 that i used to solo sail in the ocean. it was scary fast. one day the wind died down and i was sitting on the tramp eating a cookie. i felt something behind me and turned around to see the barnacle covered back of a whale slowly rolling up out of the water. i thought, "I might be out a little too far here." later that day i was almost killed when the cat flipped full turtle and drifted in front of a ferry that could not stop. i slammed into the hull of the ferry and was carried alongside the ship until i was sucked into the prop wash. my mast and lines where pointing straight down into the sea. i was standing on the bottom of the tramp with my hands touching the underside of the stern of the ferry. the props where churning bloody murder beneath my feet. i thought i was a goner
Man, does this bring back memories! I can still remember talking with your dad in the shop as he was building these hulls. Learning about composites in general. I always liked your dad, he was always willing to teach me about boats and composites. Sure wish I could go back and learn even more. Hope you guys are all doing well.
+Tad Johnson Tad, rad to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words about my father. I should have learned more from him too but when you're young...I guess it's not what we were into so much.
+Jared Prindle I just added him on FB as well. Wonder what he would think of the new big yachts being built as cat and tri hulls? Glad to hear from you.
I've got an 18-2. The boat is 33 y/o and living proof that boats are eternal as long as you replace their parts. The thing keeps up with most of even the modern boats in my local fleet. Certainly one of the faster boats I've ever sailed. I wish prindle could still be in business.
Hey Jared! Thanks for posting this video! I bought my P16 from the Catamaran Store in North Hollywood, CA, back in 1975. I just visited the store yesterday on a bike tour through town from Northern California and spoke to the original owner, Dick. Amazing! After all those years, his store is the same less the P cats since they're no longer around. Dick is 81 now. I asked Dick whatever became of the designer (your father?) and Dick wasn't sure ... We lamented on how popular the sport was back in the 1970s and 1980's before fading away. The local lake in the area, Castaic Lake, doesn't have a single cat on it these days. Someone out there might still be using mine. I sold it in 1982 with sail number 849.
"The Prindle 16 is the perfect family fun catamaran" 3:45. They got that right; I've got many fun memories of me and my three sons on the lake challenging the wind and getting wet. I used to pull them through the water giggling and we actually enjoyed capsizing and righting the boat. Again and again...
Jared, is there any way for you to send us this file, we just ran the Prindles 50th Anniversary North American Regatta and are working up a video and would like to pay some homage by using the clips of geoffery and stirling talking about the boats
I just took over a Prindle 16 Catamaran, possibly to be donated to a youth program soon(let me know of anyone that will be interested, Here's the introduction Prindle video from 80's,
There was only one other Prindle 16 in San Diego when I bought mine in 1972. Sail #40 with light blue and white hulls. Fast, simple and much safer than the Hobie 16 - and built like a brick shit house. Great boat! What is Geoff Prindle doing now?
Had a Prindle 16 back in the 80's (#4535). Loved that cat ! Sailed in Biscayne Bay in Miami.

I got my first 16' in 1977. We were Fleet 10 in Miami. I owned all three sizes and raced a lot. Just great times and people..

+David Allaire David, my father doesn't get on UA-cam but I will share the message. Sorry it's been a year. Apparently I'm not on here much myself.

just got my 16 back in July. Never been on a "sailboat" in life. Thanks to youtube my wife and I can sail it like pro's now. WE LOVE IT!!

The 18-2 was a very nice design. I'd LOVE to have one.
I had a 16. And SolCats, Hobies, and a Nacra 5.8NA.
Hey Jared!

Prindle 15- bought Jan 1981, Temple TX. LOTS of fun! Great memories!
The Prindle 16 was a lot better than the Hobie 16. Lot's of fun!

Estamos encantados con este velero! Nacho, Luca y Yo navegamos en el lago de Maracaibo! Siempre es una experiencia divertida!
Which was the fastest ? 15 , 16, or 18 ? Was Pringle faster then honors ?

Just seeing this a year late! Sorry. I'd be happy to share it. I'm not sure the best way to exchange contact info.
@@floatmedianate will pass on my info
I wish I started on the Prindle 16 I was one of the ones that went over to Hobie 16 only regret is I have never sailed one
Right after they say "safe" at 1:23 you see a capsized one in the background lol
I love my Prindle 18.
good old time :-)

My Prindle 16 is from 1974 and still has the original main sail

That silly term 'brick shit house' is as old as your original boat. And just as decayed.
I remember Tom Trento. Does anybody know where he is today?
These were good boats. I had one for a decade and wish I had not sold it.
When I mentioned the last time I saw one off of Foster City, CA, ... that was about year 1986.
I wish my Prindle 16 had a colorful sail
buy one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A great boat ! I have a 16. its the 4th one I have owned. Far superior to the Hobie 16
Walchensee + Prindle 16 was one off my best livetime in my live!🥰🥰🥲🥲 (I declassified a Hobbycat).
