    Unusual film for the period. I was ready to dismiss it as a B movie and then it surprised me. Orloff's servant dances a fine line between campy and treacherous. The movie could have dispensed with the American but I guess he served as the foil. Orloff's institution is really creepy and the scene with the immobile man is truly horrifying.

    Bela Lugosi had that magnificent evil eye, someone who really knew the evil eye. This is a delightful film for many reasons. The blind benefited the story line perfectly with brilliant supporting roles. It was so great with the river and the Dr. Orloff staff, we even had the glass ware and electric machines as in Frankenstein. So it all was perfect entertainment. A monster mystery. Thank You.

    Definitely an underrated horror classic; Bela Lugosi as one of his most devious characters (aside from the ones who turn into bats, command zombies, or have broken necks!), a great 'monster' with Jake the goon, and a lot of great classic gothic atmosphere.

    *THX* PizzaFlix for this surprisingly never before seen *Little Gem....* whose sinuous suspense definitely overshadowed the often typically "jocular" humor repetitiveness of so many 1930s film scripts =👌
    As this nefarious plot progressed, I became increasingly "urged" to ponder exactly WHO was *_"The Human Monster"....._* 😮
    A Definitively English "cheerio" ending, much on par with the earlier, classic American Universal Studios Horror genre.

    According to a recent DVD of the film, it is STILL not recommended for children. I recall that I saw it on a big screen when I was about 6 years old. It was the first monster movie that really bothered me.

    • @annalisavajda252
      @annalisavajda252 7 місяців тому

      No I don't think it's appropriate either and children should not be forced to watch scary inappropriate things. I used to run screaming out of the living room when I was about 4 and my older brother wanted to watch The Incredible Hulk in the early 80s.

    It's always awesome to see old footage of the Thames!
    Still using sail in 1939 on that river! Crazy!
    It's also crazy to think that the Nazis' invasion of Poland was afoot when this was made!

    Lagosi wasn't wanted for the movie Dracula,because of his heavy accent,lol, the producers offered the part to many popular actors, but back then they called these creature films and was considered cheesy, lagosi wrote letters to the producers begging for the part, finally they caved when others turned it down, knowing how much he wanted the part they used that as leverage against him to pay him less than everyone else, the rest is history, "Velcome to my castle".
