"He cooked that man without the ball!" that's one of my favorite plays from this game, Bird worked the defender like a football player with that little juke!

Back then everyone produced. Not every team had superstars but collectively they got it done. And yes, they did floaters.

I was so looking forward to this game. I grew up in Boston and moved to Atlanta for work. I was on my way home when a series of bizarre incidents delayed my doing so. One thing after the other, i tried to imagine perhaps bird wasn't playing or the game was delayed and it would be on at a later time. Though i knew that was only wishful thinking. Finally i pull in to my driveway, enter the apartment turn the tv on. I can hear the announcers as I'm waiting for the picture to adjust, just to hear the last 5 minutes of the broadcast and seeing all Birds teammates hugging him and celebrating. Damn it! Just imagine... You know there is somebody out there this happened to and things of this nature happen to. I feel for you, God bless.

That whole Celtics team was phenomenal. Ainge was a sniper, DJ a wizard, & Parish a solid Center

Check out the duel between Bird & Dominique in the 88 Eastern Conference Semifinals. It was insane as they literally matched buckets practically every trip down the floor in the 2nd half, especially the 4th qtr. I hated Bird back then bc I was a Hawks fan & they couldn’t beat him. But you couldn’t help but to appreciate his greatness. And I think even higher of him now than I did then.

I have been Knicks fan since I was 12. I lived through our NY championship with Reed, DeBushierre, Walt Frazier, and the rest. I remember all these guys…Dominique, Bird, Robert Parrish (who I met later at a charity event), and the others. I will admit, unhappily, that Bird was a force…! Ha.

What the casters were saying about bird leading in all stats is
At that point in the season, larry bird had the most points, rebounds, steals, blocks and 3 point shots among celtics players. And even for assists he was second, with dj having 15 more than him

That was Atlanta's Air Force. At their peak they had Nique, Spud, Kevin Willis, Tree Rollins, Antoine Carr, etc. Dunkers for real. Even Doc Rivers would punch it on you.

Great channel/content Shon👏🏼 Another important aspect of 1980’s NBA that’s never really spoken about is EVERY team had a Center to AT LEAST clog the lane and guard the basket..I’d say offensively probably HALF of them might’ve been stiffs but no teams took the floor without a big man in the middle to at least take up space..nowadays especially in the regular season that middle is wide open most of the time there’s a lot of easy buckets in there

The Celtics were great in the 80s. They were a well-oiled machine. I saw them play the Sixers at the Spectrum in 1988. Dominique Wilkins was an awesome player too.

They played some games in New Orleans because back then the Hawks were the only team that ran the South between Texas and Baltimore/DC. There were no teams in Florida, the Jazz had moved to Utah from NO, there was no Grizzlies in Memphis, no Hornets in Charlotte, no Heat or Magic. Hawks owned Dixie, and the hubs were New Orleans and ATL.

I'm from Minnesota, I've been watching basketball since maybe the late 80's. THIS is basketball! Now being from Minnesota I've always been a Timberwolves fan and also a Chicago Bulls fan (Michael Jordan). I quit watching basketball when Kevin Garnett retired. I saw the Timberwolves were In the playoffs this year so I watched. I realized that I don't like basketball now because the game is so different now. Everybody is always just jacking up 3 pointers all the time! I think that's stupid! This is coming from someone who used to campout on the 3 point line and had Reggie Miller as one of my favorite players.

The Celtics had a great team they pass the ball they let everybody touch the ball they knew who the leaders are on the team they complemented one another they played tough physical. Do you know Larry Bird was drafted in the NBA as a junior, but he stayed in college for his whole senior year and that’s when he played against Magic Johnson in the championship game in 1979 for the Michigan State And Byrd play for Indiana State but they draft a Mesa Junior, knowing he will you gonna play the whole season. That’s all good bird was and when he came to the Boston Garden, they led white doves flying around the Boston Garden, representing Larry, Bird, Bird, and Magic saved the NBA.

It wasn’t uncommon then for some teams to play a few home games away from home. Atlanta, as the South’s team, would play in New Orleans, which no longer had a team after the Jazz moved to Utah. Boston, as New England’s team, would play in Providence, R.I. There was a time Green Bay would play home games in Milwaukee. The strange thing is nobody thought it was that weird.

"Bird see everybody on the floor" facts💯
Is it just me?!? Or does the commentary seem LIT in this game?!? What happened to these guys?!?

    • @johnnyb4927

I am almost certain they are Hawks commentators as I don't recognize either of their voices. I agree they seem pretty good...I would have guessed TBS to be the station but I don't see that anywhere on the screen..it's just an NBA logo and some local TV station banners hanging on the sideline/scoring table. The Celtics away/road game commentators that season I believe were Bob Cousy and Gil Santos on WLVI TV Boston. ....while at home on SportsChannel New England was Tommy Heinson and the legendary Mike Gorman.

  • @msbolan
    @msbolan 3 місяці тому

There's no defense anymore, that's why individuals are scoring higher nowadays. Back in the 80s and 90s, both teams scrapped under the bucket. Today, the offense shoots and watches as the other team grabs the rebound; they don't try to grab offensive rebounds. Not like back then, that is.

McHale told the story about this game and said Bird could have had more points but didn't care to. He was all bout the win not his personal stats. Jordan was often the opposite. When he scored 63 against Bird and the Celtics he and his Bulls still lost.

"60 points then is like 100 points today" that's comically untrue. First, the 3 pt line existed. Just cos people were too dumb to use it, doesn't make modern players worse. Also, actually pay attention to the defense in this game, then watch this year's playoffs for even two games. Look at how nobody does... really anything back then. So tired of the "old NBA is so much better durrr" from people who don't actually understand how basketball works. I love you Shon, but as someone who's been watching ball WAY too much for 40ish years... cmon, your take is both lazy and incorrect.

Traveling is why I can’t stand watching today’s NBA. It’s ridiculous. It’s a travesty to allow such great talent to play with such relaxed rules.
