Odie's dingle ball is a running gag in the Garfield comic strip. Being an energetic puppy, Odie loves having things thrown so he can fetch them. While it was typically sticks in the cartoon shows, in the strip, he loves to chase rubber bouncy balls that make a ringing noise, often called "dingle balls". Garfield is not a fan of the constant dingle noise, but he occasionally likes to mess with Odie. He once tied Odie's ears around a tree before taunting him with a dingle ball, rang a dingle ball only to hide it when Odie came, and tried tripping him while he chased one. Garfield also rarely plays fetch with Odie with a ball, but that never ends well for the pup. Whenever Garfield does get between Odie and his rubber toy, it never ends well for the fat feline. Garfield once got a ball stuck between his ears, and Odie leapt after it from behind. Other times, Odie ran his friend over while chasing a ball, once while Garfield was warning the viewer about them. Rarely, the ball has been shown to be sentient. After causing Odie to run into a wall, the ball chuckles to itself evilly. There are a number of times that Odie chases a regular ball, like a tennis ball or generic bouncy ball. Odie does not care whether it is a dingle ball or not, he will chase it anyway.
