Meridian Water Station Opens

- Meridian Water station opened on June 3rd 2019 - Britain's newest railway station, in the London Borough of Enfield, operated by Greater Anglia.
It replaces Angel Road - which has now closed - and is part of a huge development in the Lee Valley area.
We went down to catch the very first service on Monday morning - the 05:57 to Liverpool Street, and explore the new station.

Thanks to Hugo and Jono for their assistance.
So angel road USED to be London's Least used station (in the 2016/17 period) but in the 2017/18 period it slid down to the Number 2 spot with 32,900 passengers, and instead South Greenford became London's new least used station last year with 26,500 passengers.
What's interesting here is that as the accounting period runs between April through to March, in next years figures it'll definitely be Angel Road again with just the passengers from April to May 2019 (two months worth instead of twelve) and probably total around just 5,500 passengers.
What happens at a railway station that no trains stop at answer not much
Why didn’t they keep the Angel Road name? No need to change the maps, ticket machines.

Chris Grayling even managed to mess up saying the station was open. Incredible.
It's kinda proven that the man is incapable of doing anything right.
@@presfieldgoalieFailing Grailing….. sorry, no-one had said that so I had to...…...
Perhaps he's going to try and use Seaborne Freight to get Angel Road's footbridge to Pilning.
He's consistent.
He actually turned up chris failing
That's impressive. Shooting a video and having it edited and up on UA-cam the same day. Incredible. I think it's time you and Vicki were given a contract for a paid for documentary.
Oh
I just checked on Google Maps, and that 360 picture is up!
Woohoo!
@@crispoman Thanks.
Hideous.............ly handsome . Yeah, right!
It is even visible from NZ - and with un-blurred faces.

BEST COMMENT EVER!!!!
Is there any UA-cam video you haven't commented on?

2:40 *Geoff:* Where are the oyster pads??
3:18 *Hugo casually taps in on an oyster pad whilst Vicky explains the out of service lift to Geoff*
I love how casually that train driver acted. "You're the first northbound train at Meridian Water." "I know." *pulls out of the station, still looking at the camera* You don't even need the shades from the "deal with it" meme, he's already wearing some.
Thank you for sharing the video Geoff. I know the video is 3 years old at this time of me typing but I just caught it today by accident. Anyway Meridian Water is on the same line where I live in Hertfordshire. It looks like a fantastic station. Great video.
I was looking at Google maps to see where the station is, and I discovered the photo as I was watching the video. Beautiful.
So Angel Road would not only hold the record for the least used station in London, but also the closest station to another (Meridian Water)
Well sort of, the two were never operational at the same time despite both appearing on the map in the video
Meridian Water really sounds like a water company.
for some reason I thought it would be a station on the Thames close to Greenwich observatory
0.58 😥 memories of sprinting up those stairs at Angel Rd Station .. over the bridge and down the stairs to catch the last train .. at 9:52am! Welcome Meridian Water (especially the extra trains from September 😊).
For a laugh, I bought travel cards from Angel Road for a trip to London on 29th June! I hope I now have valid tickets from a closed station!
You will fortunately
Any updates?
@@bt2gr8k72 Yeah it worked fine all day in 30°c + heat, unlike the tube network itself! Ironically it worked better than a lot of travelcards that I've had in the past which give up during the day or don't work at all!
2:24 Yeah. There's no more beautiful view than sunrise over Empie of Tesco
I dont think the people of Gerard's Cross would agree!!
And the sign was built so the sun rises over the "T" only on mid-summers day.
@@valvlog4665 I think its by the same architect as Salisbury SP4 7DE. :-)
There will shortly be 2565 stations - Newhaven Marine has been put up for the formal closure notice
Trek001 ;-;
They should make a video on it.
It'll be back to 2566 when Warrington West opens in September (Assuming it'll open on time).
@@ryandarbyshire5046 And possibly up to 2567 if tfl decide to build New Bermondsey (near the old site of Surrey Canal Road)
Add another one as Robroyston in Glasgow is getting one.
There's plans for Marsh Barton in Exeter to get a station, although it was due to open in 2016 and construction still hasn't began, so I'm not sure if it will ever actually happen. But, it could bring the station total up to 2569
The selfie we took under the sign with Vinni's 360 Camera is on Google Maps at Meridian Water!
Just had a thought re: the inaccessible stations (IBM and Man, Utd FC). At the moment, Berney Arms should be added to those two, as not officially closed, but the Reedham to Great Yarmouth direct line is closed until further notice, and as there's no road past Berney Arms, no replacement bus!
Surprised Grayling didn't reopen Angel Road by mistake!
I'm not an architect, but that station looks really good! At 1:48 it just looks really interesting with the brickwork and multiple levels.
Also funny to see a video with all local trains in the background! I'll have to have a visit next time I'm in London
I think so too! It's a refreshingly attractive station with a bit of a Mid-Century vibe.
Vikki doing the "Fist of Quality" made my day.
I watched them build it while I worked at the new Spurs Stadium. I stayed in the Premier Inn across the road for 5 months. Good to see it open.
Just put Angel Road [AGR] - Meridian Water[MRW] into national rail enquiries. Apparently the journey time is 10 min and no fares available. Only shows one train which is the next one after the time you enter heading in the right direction.
£5.50 for a return to Northumberland Park?! It would probably only take 15-20 minutes to walk.
It's always good (morning or otherwise) when Goeff and Vicki post a new video
I saw the little sign for the footbridge to be moved to Pilning. I’m all for that, love for Pilning! This reminds me of when the MTA closed two stations with short platforms along the Staten Island Railway and replaced them with a new station called Arthur Kill. The two stations (Nassau and Atlantic) we’re both run down, dilapidated, and weren’t really used so they decided to build a new station to try to attract passengers
Isn't every MTA station rundown and dilapidated?
I did Angle* Road last year, so I think I need to visit Meridian Water soon - just because. Nice quick turnaround on the video!
By the end of the year, Kintore and Dalcross (Inverness Airport) stations should be open on the Aberdeen - Inverness line.
Robroyston too. ScotRail will have 3 new stations
Geoff and Nicki you both do such fan-tastic videos. Wish UA-cam was more like this, I’ve become hooked by your channels, Geoff Marshall and this channel. It’s fun but informative. Never knew the tube was so fun :)
The lovely map at 10.55 made smile. Five years ago I was on that red line to my holidays in Poole. Got the train at Berwick at 6am down to LKX around 10ish. Darted across to Waterloo in a taxi (wasnt familiar with tube back then) then managed to just jump on the train before it left at 11, ended up in Poole mid afternoon. A thoroughly long day but enjoyable train journey's. 😊
A good idea for Vicki and Geoff would be to look at the heritage lines, not as a big one off series but every now and then as individual videos like they do with new stations. Lots of 'Vicki Explores' opportunities.
Now that Angel Road is closed, are there still any working Permit to Travel machines left in London Travelcard zones 1-6?
When I visited Angel Road, the permit to travel machine didn't work. :
I was about to say Cheam but the Pertis doesn't work anymore
I watched your dangerous railroad crossing in Enkhuizen video 😀 it was great
Check pert.is to find out
ricohallo22 I tried a lot of the stations listed on pert.is back in early April and apparently the closest one to London that still works is Twyford. You might wanna try Windsor & Eton Central though, the machine there seemed to be in pretty good shape.
A Tesco sun rise. Thanks Vicki. Cheers
What about doing "All The Supermarket Sunrises" !!!
Two great film references in "Maths Corner" - 1) Muggle - Harry Potter and 2) Angle [sic] - Sgt Angel/Angle in Hot Fuzz :)
Just saw your 360 picture on Google Maps. Epic!
Wow! So modern design!
Northumberland Park - Famous for being the only public location where you can see a victoria line train in the open.
No Geoff! Please don't use the same jingle for "Maths Corner" as for "Vicki Explores" because now I'm rather sad that I didn't get to see a castle! 😄
#metoo 2019!
All the jingles
You both always put a smile on my face! Thank you for your amazing UA-cams . . . more . . . more . . .
I like how the video of a new station opening, after all the boarding on and off of it, ends with the station actually opening officially.
Hi Geoff and Vicki. Meridian Water is a really nice station and i seen the photos of the suburb. It will look fantastic.
Great coverage of a milestone moment - and on-view on the same day! Deeply impressive.
I like how it’s named after a train
I'm getting very Cambridge North vibes. Given they're both owned by Greater Anglia I'm not surprised by how similar they are, probably even designed by the same architects.
Andrew Webb They’re not owned by the TOCs. Network Rail owns the station grounds.
OMG I love Vicky's scarf!
The station signs and decorations look so GreaterAnglia. It almost looks like a smaller Cambridge!
Unfortunately there isn't a direct service to Cambridge from Meridian Water, despite being on exactly the same line.
To be fair there isn't a much of a service anywhere from Meridan Water right now. Perhaps when (fingers crossed) Crossrail 2 is built, that will free up some capacity to run services like that.
@@andyhartley Crossrail 2 won't start until crossrail 1 is finished, and it could take at least 10 years for it to complete. I'm a college student now, and when crossrail 2 is done, I may have already become a father. Pipe dream is pipe dream.

Excellent, great to see another new station on the network
We need more fists of quality in new trains and stations now!!! Hard knocks and clear sound recording too!!
It looks so nice!
If i were to guess i would say that between now and september would be filled with driver training ready for the new service
Hi Geoff and Vicky have been watching your delightfull all the stations travelling and saw the Meridian Water feature, in 2018 I re visited my old trainspotting location of Copper mill Junction many hours spent after school from 1964 untill 1969 and saw a new track being installed I asked why this was and was told it was for the new Meridian Water, STN I have many stories of spotting at this once very busy location if of interest to anyone out there, really enjoy your videos Geoff and Vickey ,
We need a "Fist of Quality" t-shirt now.
you mean a banger quality?
Hugo seems quite the lad
Great video, nice to see Hugo again.
If they're that close why didn't they use the same name and class the station as re-sited? Would save a fortune on signage, ticket systems, announcements, etc.
I guess they decided that the benefits of renaming the station to match the name of the regeneration project outweighed the costs.
Great video! I will miss angle road though.(11:08)
UK Transport232 it was a cute station...
8:24 take care and hold the handrail 😂😂😂
What I'm hearing here is that there should be summer picnics on Meridian Water station durin the day this year! No-one getting on or off to disturb the sandwiches...
As usual, well done Geoff and Vicky 😊
That Driver you spoke to at 9:03 was one of my Minder Driver's back in 1996.. He hasn't changed a bit. (Apart from the beard)
"Are you excited?"
"Yeah, I'm going home"
MATHS CORNER!!!! Combining two of my favourite things; maths and trains!!
I thought you were going to say maths and corners...
Nice video and seeing the wooden sign to the station reminded me that Beaulieu Park has a wooden sign showing station which has been in the ground for about 3 years but the station is still a dream. MP Vicky Ford is heading a group of local stakeholders to get funding for this station so that the sign is factually correct!!
Great to see a new railway station opened! I'm surprised there's no ticket barriers!
Nice to see you're not resting on your laurels. New station ! WOO HOO !
Class 222 Meridian + a glass of water = meridian water
If Meridian Water and Angel Road are literally a stone's throw apart for even the weakest person, why didn't they just call the new station "Angel Road"? I assume it is something dealing with marketing for the housing estate, but really!
I presume they wanted to raise the profile of the new estate being built with that name nearby. When Crawley, Polegate and Rochester (to name but three) were resited, there was no call to give the replacement stations a new name, they just took the name of the old one, but in Angel Road's case, it was the new development next door that prompted the resiting of the station. Also, the developers may well have pumped in some cash into the station project, maybe on condition that they use that name, I'm not certain of that mind, but it's quite likely.
@@OneKnifeYeHand Technically there does not seem to be an "Angel Road" anymore. At least not that I can find on Google Maps. Both the old and new stations are on "Angel Edmonton Road" (aka A1055) but I can't find just an "Angel Road" anywhere near there. It is highly likely that in 1864 (when the station was renamed from Water Lane), that "Angel Edmonton Road" was just called "Angel Road".
Interesting to see those helicopters - I was in the area on Friday for the last day of Angel Road, and there were two flypasts of about 10 helicopters over Northumberland Park.
Sunset thru Tesco Sign !!!
The lack of platform 1 😂
The lack of regular service to Liverpool Street is slightly poor. Many people start from there to reach Ikea. Wouldve made sense to make the Hertford East services stop there.
That every 30 minute service to Stratford is a weird one.
2:51 'Meridian Road' like Angel Road and Meridian Water combined together
I see there is an IKEA right next to it, so that station could actually be quite useful
My respect for Jeff has grown knowing he is a fellow Spurs fan!
Who else immediatly thought of hot fuzz with that angle/angel thing
No
Thanks for your reply will look that up. Pat
Wow! Great video, didn’t realise what you were doing was a real high quality piece of railway history. Do you go to all the new station openings? Best wishes from the nut on the motorbike!
5:50. Pretty sure that's gotta be one of the only places you'll see a Vicky Line train above ground.
It is, the entire line runs underground which means that the only way to see the trains above ground is when they're in the depot 😊
This is so funny! I Googled the name of the station and you guys appear in the photo, hahahaha!
Was the fact of the lifts not working a subtle tribute to Chris Grayling?
I like those stations with the concourse and main amenities above the tracks. You get a lot of that style in Japan.
Do visit Nottingham then! And the great central railway (preserved)
Some stations on the main line out of Paddington where platforms on the fast lines don't exist are also numbered as if they are there, e. g. West Ealing, numbered 3 and 4, and the Greenford bay platform is 5.
I don't think a new station is really open until you and your young lady friend have been there!
Can’t believe you got Idris Elba to do your outdo!
The old level crossing at Northumberland Park is still on google street view!
Glad Angel Road closed. Too terrifying for me to use at night. Literally into darkness over a motorway overpass. Are you kidding me. No way when I don’t know area.
I dont think trains even stopped there at night unless your talking about in the winter.
@@nathanw9770 I got one away from there in the evening peak last February. There wasn't another soul around, so I didn't feel threatened or frightened, but I cant say I was sorry when the train turned up!

To answer Geoff’s question at 08:15 if you want to go to Tesco in the middle of the day you’ll have to get there another way
Angel Road was my local station when I lived in East London, sad to see it go.
So you lived in East London, but a station in North London was your nearest station?
it was sad to see it there.
Located on the very edge of North London. Not far away from random parts of Chingford in East London.
Merciful Zeus! I lived at the bottom of Hall Lane which had an E4 postcode, so always thought of it as East London. North East London would be more accurate I guess!
Was the “Take care and hold the handrail” little box simply zip tied in place?
yes they were too busy building the nonexistent platform 1
Announcement: This is Angel Road
Geoff: NO IT'S MERIDIAN WATER
Meridian Water sounds like a water company! 😂 Well now that Angel Road is now gone, you're gonna have to do another least used station in London. The thing is, is Meridian Water going to have more people or is it just going to be a complete waste of money?! Angel Road should of just been refurbished as Meridian Water is just inches away from it.
A lot more people with the housing development and the shuttle service, yes.
Located next to the Ikea aswell. Many people come off trains at Tottenham Hale and jump on the 192 bus to get there which can become very overcrowded. So even without the development, the relocated station is beneficial.
The station is for a new housing development on a grey fields site. It was moved away from the awkward site it was previously at, under an over pass little space. Meridian because the development on the 0 degree of longitude, Water because it’s on the Lea river.
The old walsall to Wolverhampton line is to reopen with 2 stops Darlaston and Willenhall
Going to implement The Fist Of Quality at work. Somehow. It's a software group.
Just imagine how much many towns across the UK would be transformed by the level of investment in infrastructure in a tiny part of London that 99% or more of people in London will never even notice...
Indeed
Regarding IBM, I have recently travelled to Scotland and done the branch from Glasgow to Wemyss Bay, and IBM is totally closed... as in you can't even get onto the station as they have made it deliberately impossible for you to do so...
Sooooo…. That makes 2564 as I wouldn't count Manchester Utd Football Ground either anymore.
As far as I know, the ORR still counts IBM Halt as a station
