Tesla CCS Adapter Issues

  • I try charging my Tesla Model Y with the new CCS adapter available from South Korea with very mixed results. It could have been the Electrify America station I was using or some other factor, but this wasn't what I was expecting based on other reviews. I'd hold off buying the adapter until I either really needed a CCS option for a specific trip, or it's available in the US and fully supported by the CCS networks here.
    If you're looking for the adapter it can be found here:

    After launching this, I'm realizing that maybe the biggest takeaway is; if you're used to the Tesla Supercharger network experience, don't assume it will be as seamless using other networks. I hope this will work well for those who purchase it.

      The USA doesn’t have a standard port for EV’s, so Tesla went with their own hoping that theirs would become standard. No official standard has been made as of yet.

      Even more, none of the alternative connectors and standards existed when Tesla needed to invent one. It’s not that Tesla wanted to be the standard, they needed to be first.

    I had the same issue with the same adapter at Electrify America. We tried 3 times on a 150KW station and a tech was actually onsite working on them. ( in Nashville) We changed to a 350KW that was just serviced and it did great. I also tried the adapter at a smaller 24KW charger in South Carolina at a Circle K station with no issues at all. I do believe that it is an EA issue on certain stations.

    I received my adapter a couple weeks ago, I tested it at a EA charger in my area, using the CC method (No App) and it worked great! It took a little longer to initialize charging than at a TSC, but it fired up and was fast and I had no issues. I used the same site you have linked, and it took about 2-3 weeks to arrive. I purchased mine due to some long lines at chargers when I am traveling up and down the I95 corridor. if you do road trips in congested areas, this will be a great adapter to have.

    In Europe, Tesla 3 and Y have already CCS2 plugs, so they work both on SuCs and fast public DC charger such as Ionity. Weird that Tesla did things differentely in USA

    • @brianriebedriveselectric
      @brianriebedriveselectric  Рік тому +7

      Tesla developed their own plug on the Model S before there was a clear standard for fast charging in the US. As they created the supercharger network it made sense to use their own standard. That got carried into the 3 and Y here even though CCS was becoming the global standard so the new cars could use the superchargers. Because of EU regulations they had to go CCS over there, and I imagine this adapter is the start of the process of making that switch here in the US too. It'll be nice in a few years when everyone's on the same page.

    Thanks for the review. Having watched numerous EV charging videos, I would say that the EA pedestals appear to work better for app users and affiliated cars (Volkswagen, Porsche, etc.). You may want to try again at a different EA location with the app and membership. I plan to order the CCS adapter for my Model Y. We are roadtripping the MY in place of an RV. We just returned from a 5,104 round trip to the Southwest USA. We had no problems with Supercharging. But I would like to have the option to use other networks for DC fast-charging. In certain areas where I travel for work and for family trips (up and down I-75 and I-95), there are Superchargers that are becoming more and more crowded.

    I just got back from a 2500 mile road trip in my Model Y. I bought this adapter for backup and tried it at 3 different locations with minimal success. One Chargepoint location with 2 stalls. Neither worked. One EA station with 4 stalls, all full. Another EA station with 4 stalls, 2 stalls didn't work, one gave me only 28kw on a 150kw handle, and the last one FINALLY worked. All of these stops were just to try it out, I was never in a position where I needed it. While I am glad I have this as an option, I would NEVER plan a trip that depended on it.

      I just drove thru California a month ago with a CCS adapter... On the 150kw EA chargers, I averaged 133kw.. I used a 150kw charger in Davis, that apparently is 375A instead of 350A. I consistently pulled 149kw from that 150kw station each time I used it.... When I used the 350kw EA chargers along the 5, I averaged between 170 and 190kw depending on my state of charge.

    Hey Brian, I am currently in California on a road trip to see giant trees, and there are several areas in northern California where the superchargers are either not in a practical spot for where I wanted to go, or are busy and there’s either a wait, or slow charging if it’s a V2.
    I picked two hotels that had the Chargepoint CCS/CHAdeMO stations. I have the CHAdeMO adapter, but it’s pretty slow compared to a supercharger, 30-49 kW was what I saw. However, that’s still faster overall compared to L2 charging speeds, which is anywhere from 6-11 kW.
    In retrospect I should’ve bought one of those CCS adapters before I went to California. Aside from the potential faster charging the CCS adapter isn’t nearly as clunky and cumbersome as the CHAdeMO one is. And it really makes me appreciate how simple yet elegant the Tesla plug that can be used for both AC charging at home/destination chargers, and for supercharging. I always have a chuckle when I watch videos where a CCS or CHAdeMO plug is being used, and they often struggle to plug it into the EV.

      There are good SCs along I5 in Williams, Red Bluff, Mt Shasta and Yreka. The Mt. Shasta station has 12 stalls all L3 150kWh and is pretty busy. I had my CCS adapter along just in case but never needed to use it. I have not driven the Hwy1 Pacific Coast Highway in the Model Y LR so I don't know how well set it is for SCs. Try chargepoint for the CCS as I've not had any problems (yet!). Cheers.

Using Electrify America has been awesome cost wise at 0.12 cents/kw, but I bought a Tesla just to get away from unreliable charging sessions just like you demonstrated. 30% of my time I've had time wasting issues. 50%+ I have to change pedestals 3 times. 40% of the time sessions abort within 1 minute. Brian, thanks for the video and helping Tesla owners with charging options. I think there is a problem with that particular charger at Woodbury. I was charging my Rivian R1T there on the morning of June 5, 2022 and it charged at a low rate then kept dropping to zero like your session. I had zero issues using the CCS1 adapter on chargepoint 5 times for a road trip. I tested it on EA and it worked there as well, but EA is glitchy especially credit card and starting. EA is at Walmart usually and I don't vacation at Walmart. Chargepoint was at a coffee shop, two tourist downtown prime locations and a visitor center. One was same parking lot as Tesla, but 13¢ cheaper. So very pleased with my CCS1...

    I have no issues with the adapter. EA is flakey most of the time with my Bolt and so far using the adapter with MYLR has better results.
    Use cases:
    1) charging deserts. Boise-Winnamucca is speed limited unless you can use one of the two CCS chargers on the route.
    2) busy charger/lower $. In Denton TX the superchargers were full. I went next door to the EA chargers in the next parking lot. I was the only one there at the start and the fees were 1/3 the Tesla rate.
    3) Free charging. In Utah there are a bunch of free CCS chargers. Some are only 50kW, but if you’re not in a hurry, free is good.

      @Geckogold Рік тому

      My guess is that it would add a lot of extra cost to install a 2nd cord, and depending on regulations, a 3rd one for CHAdeMO. The other big issue is that superchargers are designed for Tesla vehicles, which all have the plug in the same spot.
      With other automakers, the charge port location varies, though most seem to favor in front of the driver side door. As we’re seeing in Europe, many EVs have trouble parking into the supercharger spot without blocking other stalls due to said different placements and supercharger cables being relatively short.
      So, all that said, I am curious to see how Tesla will implement this in the North American market. Will they retrofit the superchargers to have multiple connectors for different EV’s? Or will they force non-Tesla EVs to buy an adapter if they want to use superchargers?
      My guess is that they will do the former, because I’m sure someone will scream about how Tesla forces others to buy add-one when they could just install a CCS cord with the supercharger plug like they do in Europe.

      @brianriebedriveselectric  Рік тому

      @@Geckogold I'm guessing new stations will get dual cords, but they may also offer an adapter to CCS folks to charge at existing superchargers. Port placement will be an issue, hopefully there will be good tips or info in the app to help people park their vehicles properly. Here's hoping...

      It depends on the battery temperature. On EVGo on a 50kw Tesla plug I was pulling about 38kw to the battery. Scan My Tesla was showing roughly 7kw being used to warm up the battery. So technically EVGo was giving me 50kw minus some charging losses and minus the battery heating. I wasn't able to precondition because EVGo isn't on the map, however the Tesla detects when it is DC charging and will heat the battery at that point.

I would not expect a system built under those conditions to be good. I don’t know why we’d force a company that doesn’t want to make EVs build EV infrastructure, of course they will half ass it. EVs are Teslas life blood which is why Tesla’s charging infrastructure is the envy of the industry.

The tech wasn't looking at that one until I had problems with it. The adapter did work for John's session, and my car charged fine the next day, so the issue definitely was the station. I should have stated this more clearly in the video, but didn't think of a concise way to put it until after this was uploaded. I did add the pinned comment above with my final thoughts. I still think it's worth sharing the experience, because if you buy this adapter expecting to have the same experience as you have with the Supercharger network, you may run into some of these issues until the other networks are more robust. Thanks for sharing your thoughts David, I agree, the problem isn't the adapter (see pinned comment). It's that if you're used to the Tesla charging experience you won't find it at all CCS stations. The issues I had were related to the EA network and hardware, so as good as the adapter may be, if the end result is no charge, it's tough to rely on. Hopefully the recent CCS charging woes will be solved by the networks soon.
