there was some other channel recently, I think it was a 3D blender one that asked if any pro's are working in the industry that are colorblind. And tonnes of comments flooded in from pro's absolutely having no problem with it. I was so pleasantly surprised to find that out, thought I'd share it.

Thanks Dana! Half a lifetime ago I pretty much spent a couple of years in a dark room (that sounds depressing...). But a photographer darkroom (that sounds better). Back then everything was analogue, and that. Filtering colours in a darkroom for photography is solely based on CMYK, well CMY + exposure time. That's all been some handy knowledge when painting. Plus, magenta and cyan are a lot more fun in themselves than red and blue in my opinion :)

Awesome! Long time painter here and art prof. I taught painting, drawing, color theory, etc. for a couple of decades. Just a few extra tidbits to add here:
    1) K = register color, pretty much always black, but blacks are typically a very neutral cool blue. Add black to your yellows for wonderful natural-appearing greens (for proof of concept).
    2) CMYK is often referred to as Printer Primaries. You can go further as a painter by embracing a Painter Primaries of Magenta, Cad Red Light (a red-orange), Ult Blue (a blue violet), Thalo Blue (close to cyan), Cad Yellow med (close to true yellow with slight yellow orange tendencies) and Cad Yellow Lt (a yellow that moves toward yellow green). With these you will give you an even broader range of achievable colors. That's why in professional printing, there are usually 2 extra plates beyond CMYK.
    3) Adding two true complementary colors will yield a neutral gray. When painting with them, you'll also desaturate the colors due to the subtractive model of color that real world pigments operate within (as opposed to RGB's additive world).
Go down the Color Scheme rabbit hole next ;)

As someone who is getting back into miniature painting, after a loooooooong time away from it, I am amazed by how things ave developed. Also a little overwhelmed by where to start again, as all I have is rather fuzzy Citadel Miniatures brush from the 90's. This channel was one of the first ones I found and has been awesome in helping me get back to it. This video in particular has really inspired me by brining back that idea of experimentation and fun that this hobby provides. Thanks to Dana for having the imagination to come up with idea and taking the time and effort to make it. 🙏

Thanks Dana, what you've highlighted is that for 'many' painters out there, if they want a colour they go and buy a bottle with that name on it. Many, I think, dismiss colour theory as complicated, but understanding how colour works is just like understanding light and shading. I'm a general maker [not a gamer] but I like all kinds of craft tutorials. Yours show a bold, self assured method that must be far more rewarding [as the results testify] than a 'painting-by-numbers' approach. Here's to being, outside the box, cheers.

I've watched a number of videos on color theory and paint mixing and I believe I understand the science of it all very well. But as a beginner painter trying to apply this all has been another matter entirely,

    Mind blown!
This is flat out the best treatment of color theory I've seen in a mini-painting video. I thought I understood both the traditional R-B-Y color wheel as well as the CMYK wheel, but watching you put primary-color glazes on a mini really coalesced what I thought I understood previously on a new, much more practical level. Thanks for that! I definitely want to point out how much your ogre paint jobs in this video remind me of classic Frank Frazetta fantasy paintings. Frazetta had an amazing grasp of color; I remember studying his skin tones closely back in college, and realizing that they had bits and patches of every color EXCEPT fleshtone throughout the shadows, midtones and highlights. When you back off from the canvas and look at the whole figure, it totally looks like skin, but when you zoom in, you see how many different colors he's blending and melding and contrasting to get that effect. Those ogres of yours really evoke that aspect of Frazetta's style. Keep healing, and when you're ready, please keep sharing your unique vision on miniature painting--I think your work has really influenced the stylistic direction of the hobby in a profound way. Take care, and thanks!

I've never managed to mix a convincing red from magenta and yellow, just like I can't mix a vibrant green from yellow and blue. I think, if I had to, I'd choose six primaries: lemon yellow, orange yellow, red, magenta, blue and veridian. I'd get a wider gamut with better oranges, purples and greens with these.
(I separated out cyan into blue and veridian because I've never found a cyan paint I like that behaves like I'd expect.)
As far as I've seen, models painted purely CMYK tend to have That Look, like a stylised comic book. It's a good look, but whilst people say they can mix any colour they want, they tend not to. I rarely see people painting in earthy or desaturated colours when using this palette, they normally chose a different limited palette with earth tones. So I do wonder if limiting your palette to three primaries, any three primaries, is especially useful?
So, I think I'd extend my six primaries above with some useful earth colours: red earth, ochre and umber.

Thank you for this very enjoyable video on this topic. Just some random additional thoughts: from a physiological standpoint there are four distinct types of light sensors in our eyes (S, M, L type cones for color, rods for intensity), so it makes sense that we need four types of pigments in subtractive color mixing to match that. This also puts the relevance of three colors in perspective: there is nothing magical about the number three here, and this way we by no means can objectively produce all types of coloured light imaginable in reflection. It's just that it's good enough for what our eyes can differentiate. On the other hand we only need three colors in additive color mixing (not four), because in that context we have the option to simply switch off the light to produce pure black, so it's much easier to achieve high contrast (between lightest light and darkest dark) than it is by absorption in subtractive mixing.
