A LOT of us drummers drum in our mouth with teeth and tongue. The music is non stop in your head. It is perplexing to find out not everyone has music in their mind constantly. Hell, i guess some people do not even talk to themselves, i find this difficult to believe
I’ve been doing this since I was a kid too. Dentist said the same thing to me, “ do you crunch a lot of ice?” I thought that was crazy that he said the same.
Though I’m a piano player never a drummer, I also do the “morse code” musical habit with my teeth and it IS awesome to learn “you’re not alone” and that music is a virtual life line for many of us🙏💃🏼🤷♀️🎹💝
nah, after listening for just the quarter of the book, my idea about him went from neutral to negative, he's tryna be some messiah like Lenon, but he is an airhead and sellout
@ZmeyMusic what? Sounds like you decided to not like him and are now desperately looking for reasons to justify it. At no point here did he say anything that could be interpreted as him thinking he's the messiah
I loved this book! I bought it right when it came out. I was almost done when someone stole it while traveling to Colorado on an Amtrack. As soon as could I bought another one. I hope he writes another one. He's a great storyteller.

I've read the book with his voice in my head, and now I'm listening to the audiobook with his actual voice and it feels quite funny for some reason. As If I was giving it a second listen. Thanks for uploading :)
Love. Put me to sleep Dave. No nightmares. No mirrors to remind me I'm just a few years behind you. Show it to the sun, a beautiful patina. Born in Fairfax VA lived in Springfield for a minute age 3 and 4. I have music in my DNA. I too am afflicted and always question, a blessing or a curse?.? I started singing the same way Violet did. I tried my hand at drums, piano (on grandma's organ) then at performing arts schools ( one near a papermill 🥴😤. I always thought that was a waste of time and never mastered any of the instruments I was jumped around to (ADHD). My degree in musical theater with a concentration in voice which was formed all by ear, a habit hard to break. I suppose it helped my formation. My voice was my instrument. I still vow to pick up my old guitar and be able to accompany myself. My voice goes into comas and when I sing again it's like an awakening. Though this gen X-er may never take the stage again I have realized that singing and learning music is my divining rod. Even if only singing in my bedroom, it's something I must do to keep my heart, mind, body and soul healthy. Dave, "IT" is great. But it is "YOU" that I love. Your stories, from your soul to my speakers, my soul speaks back. Literally. Audibly. Thank you lovely man 🎶❤️🤘
DAVE!!! how dare you out cool, how cool i already think you are. You are the best spokesperson for are industry, and culture, but who else could speak for you. thank you for being you.
Still got the question lingering on my mind: who were those two rock'n'roll musicians that Dave applies the comparison between of an old scratched car, and the other all fixed? 😅😅😅
I woulda loved if Dave would of talked a bit more about Kurt and Nirvana like In Utero times and tour especially the UNPLUGGED! Which is my personal favorite album.
The next day, I woke up, walked to my kitchen, began to make coffee, and it hit me. He's not coming back. He's gone. But, I'm still here. I get to wake, and live another day. No matter how good or bad. It made no sense. How could someone just disappear?
A person talking about grieving and mourning is doubtless helpful. Some of us will never articulate it. Its strange that I feel the account is unfairly abridged. Like I was there. The whole career of Nirvana i this account is foreshortened to 4 or five episodes and stories. There are copious accounts and histories elsewhere. I hear Grohl accounting for maturity while the culture of rock-ambition he drives continues to take casualties. He still sounds like a fine earnest upstanding young man. Is that fair?
I got halfway thru and then saw from someone's reaction video he doesn't discuss the obvious years anyone would want to hear about. That's a crazy omission. Its been 30 years.
He does talk about it though. Don't believe everything people say on UA-cam. And even if he didn't, it would be understandable. His bandmate DIED. Doesn't matter how long it's been, that's a terrible experience that most people would not want to be reminded of. He doesn't owe us anything, and doesn't have to relive his pain for our entertainment.
I don`t get it Dave. Why the middle finger and the 'fuck you asshole' from Sandy? Jealousy? Regret? Seems incongruous with what preceded it. Obviously you dont understand some people’s way of communicating. Him being the big rockstar and all, and her being the girl who knew him when he was nothing, her flipping him off and mouthing that to him on his greatest night during his greatest moment is just her way of keeping him grounded. Like, “Eff you buddy, we all know who you are, that skinny, gangly, awkward kid who felt completely out of place but look at you now. Don’t get too big for your britches cause we KNOW you! So Eff u a hole LOL” That was done in jest, but still keeping him aware that he is not this big rock star to his old friends. He’s still Dave. And judging by how he comes across, he loved it. So far I' find myself listening to some ego maniac who has no understanding of what life really is, as a musician myself who has played professionally for at least 50 years and had a great life doing what i do and not wanting to do more than I'm doing, perhaps I'm blessed for life in my case before the whole punk crap kicked in, i was brought up listening to the blues masters and then the incredible string band with a little bit of zappa and beef heart, i recammend for you cast your mind back and read some James Joyce thinking maybe ULYSSES.
This is such pretentious bullshit. Yeah, “punk crap”, a genre that’s inspired some of the biggest and best musicians to ever walk the planet. You’re literally an old man musician cliché. You’re the antithesis of musical freedom and expression. Dave’s music has inspired millions, ignited the spark that influenced hundreds of bands, some being the most popular bands on the planet, cemented his legacy as one of the most respected musicians in history and will be remembered as such for as long as there are records and it was all because of that “punk crap”. Had you actually been more open minded to other genres, instead of looking at music through the lens of a burned out blues man, you might have been a musician that actually mattered and not just some sit in session musician playing in shitty bars easily replaced by the next hundred thousand dudes that just do the same thing you do because you lack originality due to elitism and narrow mindedness and inability to access a genre that actually facilitated and encourages growth. It’s not hard to do what you do, that’s why anyone with a semi hollow and a knowledge of the blues scale can just plop their ass on a stage and do what you do while you go take a piss out back.
You're calling him an egomaniac, but your entire comment is talking about how much you're better than everybody else lol Maybe some introspection would do you some good...
Does anybody find it disingenuous that Dave talks about Kurt being a HUMAN BEING All the while him and Courtney released Kurt’s personal diary? I think it’s fucked up.
No , not much more was revealed within the pages than the music that graced our ears.
