  • In 1941, American novelist John Dos Passos wrote, “In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under men’s reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present.” The study of American history can give us the courage necessary to confront the challenges we face in uncertain times. Based on Dr. Wilfred McClay’s U.S. history textbook, A Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story, this online course examines the people, events, and ideas that have made America a land of hope from its discovery to the present day.

    Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
    The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
    By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

    Thank you Hilsdale. For some of us that are familiar with history, this is old hat, but I love you sharing for the younger generations! As the father of a two year old, you give me hope!

      I am young, an "in between" of generations. I find American history so amazing and interesting, I see our own past repeating itself over and over. I learn the past to predict the future.

    It's also providential that Washington, having defeated the British, had the integrity to refuse the crown his army would have handed him, and again, having been elected president, to limit himself to two terms.

      Because he was a homosexual, who detested "the pleasures" of women. The rest of the Founding Fathers knew that Washington would not produce any male heirs, and therefor could not found a royal dynasty. This is why they unanimously decided that BoyGeorge would be a safe choice for executive.

    Excellent as usual. Technically one note: the Backround music is two notches to high. It becomes a distraction. Still, well done.

    You should look at the letters George Washington sent to several government bodies, including the king of England, where he states his views on slavery and his wish for its end.

      Then he should have freed the hundreds of of people that he held captive slaves. Because he did not, the world views him as an evil hypocrite who exploited Black Americans so that he a his kin could live in luxury and opulance.

      @@thomasreaves588 He did spend much of his political career trying to legally get his slaves freed, because some lawmakers were forcing a law created by the king to prevent people from freeing their slaves.

      @@SDarkfire500 I have already looked at, and read his Last Will and Testament! His heirs never freed the people who were enslaved at Mt. Vernon, or on Washington's other estates and properties. If Washington had truely respected the freedom, justice and liberty of all Americans, then he would have (and should have) emancipated those who he chose enslave while he was still living. Infact, that evil scumbag should not have enslaved anyone at all!

    The US revolutionary war was Englands Vietnam. If England had not been so spread out so thin occupying all it's colonies. And the USA took on the full might of the British Army Marines and Navy. Even with Frances help the Union Jack would be flying on the USA capital today.
    PERIOD...

    • @OutnBacker
      @OutnBacker 2 роки тому

      Probably so. The war was not universally popular in the Colonies, and could have been a lost cause with a more determined British effort.
