  • The American Founders believed that the principles of the Declaration and the Constitution were not simply preferences for their own day, but were truths that the sovereign and moral people of America could always rely on as guides in their pursuit of happiness. This course considers the principles of the American Founding-which are described most famously and concisely in the Declaration of Independence-as well as key features of American government based on those principles. Led by Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn, the course also examines the major challenges posed by Progressivism to American constitutionalism.

    Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
    The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
    By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

    Back in the year 1776 all men were not equal. An autocratic monarch, a king existed. The king was not equal to the people. The king was divine. The divine right of kings. The people were subjects to the king. The king gave the Colonies the right to exist. That rights to the people were given or taken away by the king. The Declaration of Independence says no. That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights. That God given Rights are equally given to all mankind and these rights are not changeable, unchangeable Rights. That among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Later on, the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution for the United States of America expanding the list of God given Rights. These Rights are given equally to all mankind by God. Therefore, the phrase, all men are created equal.
    The divine right of kings asserted that a monarch is not accountable to their subjects because their right to rule is derived from God. The perceived belief was that any attempt to oppose the king ran contrary to the will of God. This is exactly what The Declaration of Independence did, it opposed the right of the king of England to rule over the Colonies. This was serious. So much so that an appeal to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions was made in the last paragraph of The Declaration of Independence. The divine right of kings ended July 4, 1776 and “We the People” became a self-governing nation with the Blessing of God.
    History repeats itself. The Old Testament of the Bible gives many examples of when the people followed God they were Blessed and when they chose to separate themselves from God they were cursed. Today we in America have chosen to separate ourselves from God. Lord, please save America. We have no clue what a Blessing we were given July 4, 1776.

    This statement, "all MEN are created equal" obviously taken from the Bible, what they really meant was "all man are created in the image of God" we are not different from one another we have equal worth in God's eye. Now, by the time they discovered this and more important, truly understood what the verse really said, I am convinced they were pricked to the heart and that they were struggling with what we all struggle with, standing up to Godly principles as flawed men. Thomas Jefferson had slaves and had children with slaves but im sure once he discovered this text, he probably said oh boy!

    Could the Founding Father’s action to build this Country be seen as a reaction to the tyranny of English Monarchy?
    If so does the Hegelian Dialectic of thesis (English Tyranny) and antithesis (Revolution) to yield synthesis (The United States) bear any merit?
    I ask this because I watched through some of the Constitution 101 videos. There was a minor critique of German education with Hegel being mentioned as negatively effecting the United States through the progressive movement.

    • @benrcrenshaw85
      @benrcrenshaw85 3 роки тому +2

      Hegel didn't write until the early nineteenth century and his thought did not make it to America until the 1860-80s, so he was not an influence upon the founders (late 1700s). The American founders did not think in terms of dialectical theory or notions of historicism--thankfully! They were overwhelmingly influenced by British constitutionalism and common law, as well as natural law and natural rights. However, they were undoubtedly responding to the English monarchy and its abuses. Just read the list of grievances in the Declaration of Independence. I would not interpret this as part of the Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis formula, which is itself a simplification of Hegel's dialectic.

    • @richbattaglia5350

    • @benrcrenshaw85
      @benrcrenshaw85 3 роки тому +2

      @@richbattaglia5350 This is why: 1. I don't believe the Hegelian dialectic is true. 2. The American founders did not view it this way. 3. Monarchy is not intrinsically evil, but was often considered an important element in mixed regimes. The founders were reacting less to monarchy qua monarchy than to its abuses, even though their political philosophy did eventually proscribe monarchy as legitimate.

    • @richbattaglia5350

      @@benrcrenshaw85 does something g have to be intrinsically evil to make Hegelian dialectics true?
      What does Hegelian dialectics mean to you so I can understand where you’re coming from?

    • @benrcrenshaw85
      @benrcrenshaw85 3 роки тому +1

      @@richbattaglia5350 No, Hegel's dialectic doesn't rely upon intrinsic evils. Hegel took Aristotle's formal logic and transformed its terms into concepts. He believe that fundamental reality was composed of concepts like Being, Nothingness, Truth, Idea, etc. He constructed his dialectic as a concept and its negation that come into conflict, and through that conflict transcend their differences and produce a third concept that unites their contradictions. The process was then repeated, all while moving toward the ultimate unity of all objective and subjective reality. So, in order for Monarchy-Revolution-U.S. Constitution to qualify as a Hegelian dialectic, Revolution would have to be the negation of Monarchy. But it is not (necessarily), unless Monarchy is intrinsically evil and Revolution is intrinsically good (which neither are). The American Revolution could be construed as the negation of the reign of King George III, but then this would mean it was a reaction to the abuses of monarchy and less monarchy per se (even though, as I intimated, the theory of consent eliminates monarchy as a valid political option). There are such things as constitutional monarchies, even though our Declaration and Constitution make no room for such an arrangement.

    It is a false premise that all men are created equal. In the context of The Declaration of Independence, what was being posited was that regardless of station one holds in a conflict all men have right to express and champion their complains. Fast forward to 2021 and the reality is laid bare over such assertions. . . Prove me wrong.

    This guy is an intellectual and leads Hillsdale!? All men are created equal under the law. Rich Man or a Poor Man still is accountable to the same laws and therefore should be equal under the law, but this doesn't hold true today; for those of the far-left and much of government are not being held accountable for their unlawful Behavior. Clinton only said one thing during his presidency that was worth listening to - "the Constitution was written for law-abiding citizens." The judicial system isn't broken, it flat-out does not work. When the breakdown in government fails to hold those accountable because they themselves are corrupt, the social system will collapse and United States is on the precipice ¿`_

    "All men are created equal" is an old inadequate idealistic maxim. People born with missing or dis-functional elements of their body weren't created equal to everyone who don't have those limitations, especially if those pathologies effect neurological structures; mental incompetents are not currently granted the same rights as the average citizen. It's one thing to declare "all men should receive equal and just treatment under the law" but humans are innately different in their temperaments, cognitive abilities, intelligence and reasoning capacity that is independent of life experiences.
    The truth is that certain segments of the population do not deserve political power, because they will over-abuse and hyper-manipulate the governmental system into decadence and ruin. Only responsible, diligent, productive people who are focused on the long term success of the nation should have the right to vote, which was the intent in the US Constitution. The declaration of independence was an idealists document from which that phrase (All men are created equal) has permeated, but the US Constitution is the realists implementation, which we have let degrade because of the Moderate Right's obstinate inability to understand that democracy is a terrible form of government and people need to earn the privilege to vote, not have the right bestowed upon them once they reach the age of majority.
