It's called an oblique kick because the power generating "through" the hips comes "from" the obliques. Originally the kick came from the rear leg, like a cross, landing on the knee turning your rear leg, pushing through with your hips turning the rear leg into your lead leg.... power coming from the turn & pushing your hips from your oblique.
Michael Caryoh made all of that up oblique is in reference to the trajectory of the kick. A side kick is side ways while an oblique kick is at an oblique angle. Wtf are you talking about ahaha 😂
This kick is often used in Savate (french kickboxing) its called Chassé Bas(oblique)et Chassé bas latéral (Low side kick) and the target is above the knee .

What do you think about the Taekwondo version of the cut kick for this? Basically a sliding front leg side kick. In Taekwondo because of the rules this would be aimed at the upper portion of the hip at the bottom part of the pad in order to stop an incoming kick. These were really popular for so many years that people were leaving their leg up to counter kicks until they changed the rules to disallow such behavior.
The muscle used more so than usual in the executing of the oblique kick is/are the oblique(s).. I think, again I think, this is how the kick got it's name.

Love the videos. HUGE WONDERBOY FAN! TKD Black Belt living all the way in San Pedro, Belize. I started competing in MMA a year and a half ago... I feel the oblique/prob kick it 100% viable. I mean if you think about it leg kicks are allowed... that is just a different form of leg kick in my opinion. I feel as a TKD guy this is very similar to just a basic side kick, the only thing is you cant throw this kick in any tournament settings in TKD but I think in MMA it is a totally viable kick. Helps manage distance. Thats why I use it its basically the longest straight attack you can use on someone so it helps a lot to chain with wresting/takedowns or even takedown defense. I mean you can give someone brain damage but cant damage someones knee? I watched the fight and I honestly believe the rule setting had a huge play in the deciding factor of the Jon Jones vs Dominic Reyes fight... If you look it said the rules were the old style rules. Meaning striking is judged, wrestling is judged, and octagon control is judged. Now its predominately based on strikes landed and damage is the most significant judged then takedowns as well as takedown defense and if those happen to be a wash then the judges are supposed to look at octagon control. So if you look at the first 2 rounds Dominic won the striking. But if im not mistaken Jon got a takedown helping him score points. Control in the first 2 was a wash as well both taking turns being aggressive and counter strikers. I think that was Dominic's downfall was because of the old rules and he is more of a counter striker that he wasnt walking forward enough. Then the 3rd I know Jon got another takedown and I feel striking was even same with octagon control. But the 4th round and 5th round I think Dominic took the foot off the gas being too comfortable thinking he was winning Jon got another couple takedowns winning the wrestling exchanges and was pussing forward and won the striking. If you look at all the boxes Jon checks more off. It was close. But I feel the win was just. I dont feel however the judging is fair. Jon won because of the rules they were judging him on. He is very smart and realized just the fact he got a takedowns and marched forward more is actually what won him the fight though we lost the striking in the first 2 rounds.
Happy birthday WONDERBOY! 🤘also i had dominick by split decision 48/47 3 to 2 1 2 3 dom 4 5 jon 2 was the closest in my opinion but i was counting the strikes the whole fight and dominick won rd 2 outstruck jon one of the greatest fights of all time aswell just like you and t wood both of them 🖤🙌
in JKD, specifically progressive fighting systems has been teaching the oblique kick since before jones started fighting. some people credit Jones with it, although he doesn't deserve any credit for it, just like he doesn't deserve credit for "beating" Gustafson or Reyes. I believe it's origin is the Filipino martial art pananjackman (forgive me, i'm certain my spelling is off) i think it is likely that it's called "oblique" because of the angle of attack itself. In JKD systems, most of the concern, and or the description of attack comes from the angle of attack, instead of a billion descriptions and offensive or defensive techniques the emphasis is placed on the angle you are defending or attacking. of which there are 3 levels (low, middle, and high) and eight possible general directions/angles an attack can start or terminate at. The JKD method places allot of emphasis on practicing at full speed and full power also, so to train the technique for the oblique kick they kick the shin, not the knee. For things like cupped hand ear slaps, they strike on the shoulder etc. It's a great way to train the same angles, speed, and mechanics while keeping your training partners out of the hospital. the oblique kick can also be targeted at the hip and upper thigh , the amazing thing about the kick is how versatile it is at almost any distance, it doesn't matter if the person is close or far away.

Joseph front kick is frontwards. Side kick is sideways. Oblique kick follows an oblique angle .
when your backflips so dope you get an instant sleeve tat

Its called a oblique kick because when thrown properly the power comes from your obliques feel your side and throw the strike you feel the muscles stretch
nice editing !

And newwwww Dom Reyes!!
His greatest weapon is banned by usada *wink wink*
You know that picogram helped him win the fight? I know you truly believe that "wink wink" 😂
*wink wink*
Then how did ge manage to become the goat of mma?
WANT a sweet t top!! May get wonder boy top duno ...
Good kick for self defense
Is it better to throw the kick with a slight twist on your legs vs just a straight front kick to the thigh/knee? Talking about the rear leg version.
I totally had Reyes but I’m no judge? It was super close. Congrats to them both!!!
Happy birthday WONDERBOY! 🤘also i had dominick by split decision 48/47
3 to 2
1 2 3 dom
4 5 jon
2 was the closest in my opinion but i was counting the strikes the whole fight and dominick won rd 2 outstruck jon one of the greatest fights of all time aswell just like you and t wood both of them 🖤🙌
in JKD, specifically progressive fighting systems has been teaching the oblique kick since before jones started fighting. some people credit Jones with it, although he doesn't deserve any credit for it, just like he doesn't deserve credit for "beating" Gustafson or Reyes.
Now that karate is in the 2020 Olympics would you do a live stream of that
If you google the definition of oblique the reasoning behind naming the kick as such is clear.
Happy birthday WB!
