I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
I'd rather be a one hit wonder, than no hit and no wonder. Wheatus is awesome.
Ok, Jan.
Ahhhgreed
they actually had another song that made radio, leroy, and a few good albums
@@chelseasexton7904 I know. Wheatus is a good band that still makes great music. It's just people refer to them as 'One Hit Wonder.' These guys are still making a living by doing what they love to do. And for me, that is a sign of a successful artist. And they have a quite big loyal fanbase.
why does it feel like every single upbeat song has some horrific backstory or inspiration
Brendan is one of the most down-earth musicians you're ever going to run into. The band deserves more love. Shout out to the song that refuses to die, B!
Who's version was that at the end of the vid? That didn't sound like the actual song or i'm not remembering the vocals right.
Got to meet Wheatus after a concert they played at a now demolished dive bar and YOU'RE RIGHT it was hilarious because their set opened with the lead singer telling the crowd "Don't worry we know what song you want to hear and we'll get to it but first let us play some shit you probably haven't heard" BTW Chevel was the opening act. I thought Wheatus was an all girl band because I'd only ever heard Teenage Dirtbag on the radio so I was surprised when the band took the stage🤣
@@Vamroc I've been to 3 concerts at Esquires in Bedford, UK and they usually say something similar at the start as well because they know we all love it. Then you hear some of their other music and you wonder why you've not heard it before (I had as I have all of their albums but a lot of people only really know the one song). They are absolutely amazing and they play for and with the crowd, not for themselves.
Lemonade, Hump and Dump Em, so many great songs that never got to our ears in the late 90's. My 13 year old is a huge fan of wheatus and has met Brendan and the group with plans to see them again. Very Humble and appreciative of there fans and the gift they have of doing what they love. @@Vamroc
I don't know, it feels like poppy arse to me
I always loved how the song name drops Iron Maiden and sounds nothing like Iron Maiden. Guy is clearly a metal head but went into alt pop music.
Dude clearly wrote a song about a teenage girl's interest in a band
Did you watch the video fam??
That's usually how it is lol a lot of heavy metal musicians love rap and hip hop. I liked harder shit and made a pop punk band with plenty of colors on stage lol
basically he felt his voice was girly, and better suited to this style of music, not metal
Weezer did it with in the garage
The song was also used in the HBO mini series Generation Kill. The Marines sing the song as they begin the invasion of Iraq.
And The Girl From Plainville used this song too in a choir version
That’s where I know it from. I love that show. So funny.
Their second album, "Hand Over Your Loved Ones" is a fucking MASTERPIECE. If you like 'dirtbag', you're going to love this entire second album. Go download it, post-haste.
especially the song lemonade. so good
Lemonade slaps
You three people deserve love. I wish I knew ya
No
No, I'm gonna get Justin Bieber instead. he's true metal.
I’ve always enjoyed this song. He was on Chris Demakes A Podcast recently taking about this song and doing a deep dive into the writing and recording of it.
It’s strange that wheatus didn’t do well in the US since It was my teenage anthem being 15 at the time it dropped and went gold (released for youngens), it was hugely popular in the Cleveland area especially since it fit in with the large punk crowd and Warped Tour
Just like "Foster the People - pumped up kicks" is a happy beat song about school shootings.
This song isn't about a murder, the crazy murderer just happened to live on the same street and when he was caught, the newspaper called him a "dirtbag" and that's where they learned that word. That's it
I made a music video for this song in college back in 2003. Its been one of my favorites since i was a teenage dirtbag myself.
This is one of the best songs to come out of the 90's. My husband and I both still have this in regular rotation.
Came out in 2000
@@Shagyamum 2000 is still technically 90s.
And here I thought they only wanted tickets to see Iron Maiden lol
That's how I felt as a teenager in the eighties, like I was just seen as a lowlife, so I might as well embrace it.
kasso had that richard ramirez look in his eye.
Also Elizabeth Holmes look
Yeah I’m an Aussie & we love this song & this group. Way to go.
I always loved the scene in "Generation Kill" where they're singing this song.
I drive in iraaqqq
Haha I don’t remember this scene.
This was huge in Australia, for me mostly as background music, so many great times!
It was on the periphery, given how great music was in the 90s, that was easy done.
I remember, 98, year 12, working at Maccas hearing this, and it was awesome!, 8pm to midnight shift, then into school next day.
I loved this song when it came out too!! Brings back fond memories of being a teen in the late 90s.
Released: June 20, 2000
@@HalfdeadRider teenage dirtbag was written in 1995, and was recorded and performed multiple times throughout the years after until a deal was signed in 1999 and the song was officially released the next year.
I remember seeing them on channel [V] and Andrew G interviewing them
Yeah it was big here in Oz but I was working in a welding factory and it drove us nuts repeated on every station regardless of mentioning iron maiden 🤘🇭🇲
Something about the song makes me teary. Not sure if it’s 80’s nostalgia or if it’s the simple innocence of the song. Can’t explain it.
Song was released around 2000 though
Damn the Kasso case also inspired Aesop Rock’s “Acid King”, shocking to hear both these songs had the same inspiration
That's from the Malibu Ken album, which is a collaboration of Tobacco and Aes. They had another one-off song before that called "Dirt".
There's a really good book about the Ricky Kasso case called "The Acid King."
There is also a great metal band from the 90s. “Acid King”.
@@cleoldbagtraallsorts3380 I read about it in Say You Love Satan.
I remember this song being all over MTV in the summer of 2000 in the UK.
Same here in Germany, too. The song became absolutely massive and was all over MTV and the radio, and we young teens loved it. Those were the days.
This song was in the charts when I started year 8 (just became teenagers). I just started at a new school, so I was still getting to know everyone.
We went on school camp and we were split into grpups. My mates and I called our group the teenage dirtbags!
I'm still very good friends with those guys after all these years.
Never thought this song would have a tragic story
Never thought this song would make its own episode 🤦♂️🙄🤷😂
@@floydsemlow8253 for real man
@@masonkemp1549 🤦♂️🙄 WTF 😒😂
dang this song has a lotta history
I loved this album!! I enjoy most of the songs on it! It takes me back to being a teenager and what high school was like!!
All these iconic songs with really sad backgrounds or attachments. Frikin Adam's song with the Columbine survivor :(
I love this type of music . I love these 90s gems.
That was a far reach give me my 8 minutes and 26 seconds back
14 hours a day. That's how you get good
I find that the most surprising thing about Teenage Dirtbag is that they made their own Christmas version a while ago. Christmas Dirtbag.
That murder story sounds like a movie plot of super dark times.
Imus got suspended from WNBC for playing Billy Idol's Eyes Without A Face and dedicating it to Gary Lauwers.
I've always thought that was a pretty catchy song.
Great song I don’t care what anyone says
isn’t this also the murder that inspired “18 and Life” by Skid Row?
The 'professor of rock"did a video about it.😅
What I really hate about those videos is the stock footage inserted à propos of whatever is being said. But then again, I'm the one completely wasting a Sunday morning watching whatever my smartphone is shoving down my brain, so I guess it's on me.
The Kasso segment was an inspiration for Black Circle Boys
I saw these guys open for Eve 6 back in the late 90s at Birch Hill in Old Bridge, NJ, I live just down the road. Opm was also there and I love them now. I definitely remember them playing this song because it was so popular at the time and was hoping they would play it.
I actually remember that song & video. Wow!!!😲 I absolutely never knew there was a meaning behind it. I just really enjoyed the track!
Isn't the killing the song is based on the same one that Fear Factory's song "0-0 Where Evil Dwells" is based on?
Yes
Never realized that. My dumb mind thought burton was saying castle killer!
A murder that inspired a Wheatus song as well as a Fear Factory song, oh the irony.
I saw them last year live. They kick ass.
"Upwards of nearly two dozen lineup changes" LOL!
So 24 member switches?
@@Thomasmemoryscentral The short way of saying it is "nearly 24 member switches" so you've got the jist of it. What struck me as funny was the way he said "upwards" before that which actually adds absolutely no information to the statement because it's still under 24 member switches, isn't it? It has to be because it still has the adjective "nearly" in it and that's what "nearly" means.
You now what, actually I'm thinking of Weezer
I had no idea this was about Kasso!!!!! with this, acid king by aesop rock, a few more we can have an EP of songs about this lol
Jesse James McCarell introduced me to this song. He sung it too. Jesse was the son of the late JD Crutch. Jesse had a lot of girls. Him legend.
There's a recent Vice mini doc that has interviews with the members. It's worth watching..................if you like this song.
So I know there was a book called 'Say you love Satan' about the murderer. There's a photo of him on the cover and my friend told me he looked exactly like me.
The photo on my thumbnail is me at about 47 years old. As you can see, I have a sparrow on my hand and am not at all interested in the devil...he's just a desperate and empty concept for the weak minded loop thinking blah talking fiends.
Back then, every teenager was referred to as a dirtbag, some were 😁
I think the best version of this song was done by The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain -- really great. Take a listen😅.
no
@@anchorpoint3631I second that.
Malibu Ken (Aesop Rock and Tabaco) have a really good song about the Castle story called "Acid King"
about finding a bigger audience in Europe: it's true, Teenage Dirtbag is HUGE in Germany, people will freak out when it plays on a party lol
Yup, was an absolutely massive hit here in Germany, I remember it being played on MTV all the time. Good ol' days of the 90s and early 00s, how I miss this time.
My buddys birthday party theme the year this song came out was Teenage Dirtbag, his parents hired this punk band that did a pretty decent cover of the song along with a bunch of other then popular songs. Knowing the backstory of the song really gives the birthday party a dark twist
Wasn’t expecting the Acid King case to be mentioned tbh
why does Wheatus have like 12 people in the band, and I'm assuming, since "teenage dirtbag" has been licensed into so many avenues and so many iterations, The principal songwriter for it is making all kinds of bank every quarter?
For real And it's all broads in the band now. Lmao The band cringes worse these days with that lineup.
The tv series Generation Kill featured the band. They played that song in the Humvee
I read the book, "say you love satan" when I was probably too young. It was pretty captivating, like absolute dirtbag poster boy.
Its not a bad album to be fair.
"I'm just a 60 year old dirtbag, baby..."
It’s not rock related, but Aesop Rock went to the same school as Kasso and references him on a few tracks.
I knew nothing of this band when I first heard this tune. I thought the lead singer was a woman and the song was a groundbreaking 'lesbian steals away Chad's girlfriend' type of tune. Felt kind of foolish when I learned the truth
Bayygs of drugs
Garbage bags ?
Paper bags?
What kind of "bayygs"🤷♂️
With that long ass disclaimer at the beginning of the video, you should probably drop the "true" in your channels title.
So sad how much "they" wanted to change about this song and band..
Guys i dont think this video is 199% accurate. You should find the video where the lead singer explains this song, i think thats the way to go
More importantly...ITS TACO TUESDAY!!!!!
I was thinking about this band the other day lol
I love their self titled album. Truffles is a great song and funny.
How fucking DARE you call Wheatus a one hit wonder 😂
Could you like adjust your mic level, or maybe just speaker louder or something?
Wow, that guy was a real teenage dirtbag.
Their Erasure cover was pretty good
Love Wheatus!
i had a similar story when I was in high school a guy killed a neighbor friend she went to jr high and he was in high school he killed her then dumped her in the mountains around San Jose then came to school and told his friends and took his truck with other students in the back this all started on Monday and idk how many people went with him in the 3 days before someone finally called police but our school had the media there for weeks it was crazy
I always imagined the frontman looked like DJ Qualls because of the voice 😂
They have too many great songs it's crazy really
Wheetus is not a 1 hit wonder dude they have like 9 songs that hit top ten.
Haha that’s is so not true they had two charting songs and only released eight singles total
Ricky had a tragic back story.
His parents and the community rejected him -parents kicked him out of their house at 12. Imagine everyone knowing you’re homeless as a kid in a squeaky clean neighborhood neighborhood like that and saying “well he wouldn’t play football like his dad wanted so 🤷🏻♂️” no other choice but to sell drugs. Those substances to a developing mind are dangerous. Not excusing what he did, but not surprised at all.
He did have one of the coolest nicknames ever though.
The Acid King.
Mercilessly picked on by kids at a catholic school. Yup, story checks out.
The movie Loser is where I heard it
I thought Weezer penned this hit.... Lolz.
Aesop Rock has a few tracks about Ricki Casso
On lime wire they had the artist as weezer of this song.
It was always a catchy 1 hit wonder, but TT had to ruin that...
What’s the meaning of the Christmas version of the song then?
I wondered about the same thing. Maybe it had no deeper meaning that honouring his dog or something?
Four years?
Just curious. Are the re-uploads because of claims?
If this song was trending on TikTok, there is something missing in today's pop music.
Honestly, it seems like everything has trended on tiktok for a bit.
He's antisocial not phsycotic 🤦♂️
Ah yes, Ricky Kasso. The "Acid King". Not only are there songs about him, one band is named after him.
I loved this story I had to watch it again 😊
I remember this crime story! did not know that all of this inspired a song hahaha that's turning something negative into something positive and making a better life from it. these days, people are so weak so they off themselves or murder others. the just need a good inspirational story like this guy to help them keep going.
I think it is quite insensitive to downplay someone with suicidal thoughts or mental health issues as weak.None of that could easily go away.Of course murdering someone or suicide is not a good solution but without getting help will result in that.I don't really see Teenage Dirtbag as a happy song lyrically obviously.
People have been offing themselves for a long time now, not just “these days”. And it takes strength to do so.
Bro It’s like every song I find from the past just blows up😭
I feel the same way 😮
Anyone elses mind jump straight to generation kill when they here this song?
Malibu Ken has a song called "Acid King" where Aesop Rock really lays out the details and situation.
Now I feel bad for calling them "Weenus"
I bet none of this was the inspiration for the song, it sounds like something made up afterwards to explain it. The story is all over the place, half of it makes no sense.
I had a STRONG dislike for that song in University!! Figured they would be a one hit wonder!
The acid king
7:57 Brown would something something group Chain smokers has to remix... wtf, I don't get it! Can't hear him
I think of Generation Kill when I hear it lol
I did not that this song was about the acid king
Yep, blink 182, all the small things was another epic one mocking backstreet boys 😂😂😂
