Thanks Sharon - it is funpushing yourself to do new things. It is so low risk as well...the tree is already basically dead and the whip was a cutting :)
Nice job XAv. I'll enjoy seeing how this gets on. In the back of my mind with projects like this is always what will the new tree eventually look like when the original tree has rotted away.
Turned out great! It looks like an elm! It should be interesting to see how it looks with the new limbs once they can hold their own and you can remove the old ones. I also hope the main trunk fuses and gets new life ... if that's even possible. thanks for sharing Xavier!
It's a first for me but I do know that whip will grow quickly. The only random in this is how well the old corkbark elm trunk will hold up before rot sets in?
The way you have spiraled the whip around the trunk will hopefully give you plenty of options of new branches. Personally, i would probably have taken a more direct route to the top. I'm sure it is going to look great once it gets some leaves. Nice work.
That went excellent and it was the first time you made a tanuki ! I hope it will start showing some good progress in a few months and I'm looking forward to your updates about it.
Very 'inneresting' final product. Nice craftsmanship with the Dremel also. I have an old timer Dremel but I would have to practice to get as good as you, especially since you really only get one shot! Nice work!
Have fun Xav with your first time making a tanuki let’s hope it turns out to be successful for you and you do a few more, we all seem to have lost a couple of due to the hot summer, but we take it in the chin and carry regardless.
Also missed the live-version. 😢 What a lovely Christmas-gift those tools are. 🤩👍 Like your creation Xavier. 🙏 I would probably go to remove more of the thickness of the trunk in the upper part of your dead tree. So that the silhouette appears more slimmed and aged by weather…. Cheers from Austria 🙏 Martina 🙋♀️
I've only done one Tanuki which wasn't a great success, as I only went as deep and wide as you, so my advice would be to go backnin now a dig it at least twice as wide and deep as the whip for it to stick when it grows✌
Thanks for the advice Simon. I shall definitely keep an eye on it and if it doesnt grip then my update video will show me doing exactly what you say with a new whip. :)
I also think you did an excellent job. gives a person courage to try sometime.

I am just getting started and this video just got me more excited
Something to do in your camper conversion :)
Haha! Your description is captivating and when I hear the word scrotum and see zip ties I just have to peak in...see you in a bit!
It took me by surprise when i was looking for the definition too :)
Very much looking forward to this 💚
It is definitely a 'first' for me.
Great job Xavier! I love how it turned out!
Thanks - it was just a bit of fun at the end of a hard days work on maples. Give it a few years and it may age quite well with those rocks :)
Nice job XAv. I'll enjoy seeing how this gets on. In the back of my mind with projects like this is always what will the new tree eventually look like when the original tree has rotted away.
We shall just have to wait and see :)
Looks really good mate good luck with it 👍👍
Cheers Andy - let me know if you see that beast hanging around :)

A lot to observe over the next 12 months I think :)
Super interesting project Xavier! I look forward to seeing how this grows into it!

@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat You could strip the bark off of the dead part, then make it white with lime sulphur?
@@notionbonsai Something to consider when i see how things develop.
I really enjoyed this presentation - anxious to watch the progress👍
Thanks Donna - it is nice and healthy so the real question is how well the dead trunk holds together whilst the young whip establishes itself :)

Nice work.
I might have got a little bit carried away with the twists on this one :)

Thanks so much - the next 6 months will be very interesting as that whip will grow quickly.
Very 'inneresting' final product. Nice craftsmanship with the Dremel also. I have an old timer Dremel but I would have to practice to get as good as you, especially since you really only get one shot! Nice work!
I spent 5 minutes with an offcut of wood getting the technique comfortable...and then justt went for it. :)
Excellent teaching video Xavier. Does this fall under bonsai basics?🤣🤣🤣 you always seem to point me in a direction of something new to try!
Definitely one for Bonsai basics - I was surprised how easily it went for a first effort. The right whip is essential.
Nice work and great result, look forward to seeing how this one develops in the future.
Thanks - deifnitely has the potential to be a nice example.

That's definitely the spirit we need to have. There are always disasters waitnig to surprsie us in bonsai :)

You make a good point about the apex but I shall wait and see just how well the whip thrives on its new host first :)
Very Good Objekt to learn Male a Tanuki. Good Job Xav 👍
Thanks Tom - it is alwasy fun trying a completely different technique. I hope this will thrive and lead to a better bonsai in the end.
Very nifty! Hmmm... I might have to go look around the property for deadwood now...
My wife used to say I was 'deadwood' but I drew the line at her wrapping me in a whip :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Haaahahaaa! Good Grief!🤭
Sorry I missed it I was in Sainsbury’s doing the shopping
Go sit in the corner facing the wall and think about what you’ve done. 😂
I'm goimg to set the Tanuki on you...

Looks very promising, tfs
Nice to hear from you maria. Thanks so much :)
I’ll catch up when I’m home
I would expect nothing less of you :)
Have to add yiyhave done a fantastic job for the first time.👌
Thanks joe - it was great fun trying it out. Probably did too many twists :)
Have your Hurd of a dremmel flexi cord to go with your dremmel
It makes things like that so much easier?
I think I will be investing in a new kit at some point that has that option. They are a wee bit expensive :()
Interesting, but why did you made all the turns?
Grts
Kennet
Not sure how to answer that one? It just felt like the right thing to do. Cheers Kennet.
Put it in a bigger pot to develop the whip.
I am going to definitely agree with you on that. I will do that later today. Thanks :)
Any updates on this?
There is an update in one of my latest Bonsai for Breakfast episodes :)
Spoilers...it is fine :)
Lol, happy April fools day indeed 😂😂
Anybody seen that tanuki hanging around :)
Hope I didn’t upset anyone by not replying
who are you?? :)
