I did the same last year but with smaller tree and driftwood, its good driftwood that is not so easy to find, must increase my search. lovely Tanuki. Thanks Peter
Peter I've actually used paneling nails with the ridges, now just the nails in my air gun to attach the sapling to the driftwood inside channels I've cut. So much easier. Just another trick. Steve.
Great video peter. I cant wait to make a tanuki one day. Just a little extra tip ive seen people take time also to carve channels in the deadwood and lay the live whips into the deadwood so it falls in place nicely also. Prob takes alot of time though
Thank you.... 🙏 😔 🙏 Dr. Chan, another video filled with information and techniques. Again thank you. Driftwood is a great source of "deadwood" and is already "seasoned" and "blasted" if the beach is convenient. 🙏 🖖 🙏 😔
I followed your technique last year & have a decent hibiscus tanuki from a year old pencil thick trunk. A tamarind tanuki is in the making (fingers crossed ) , neem sapling somehow didn’t take too kindly to hugging deadwood so I took it off, it’s happy now, thank you for reinforcing the tips & tricks
I created a deconstructed Tanuki with cuttings and deadwood by incorporating the deadwood as separate plantings in a forest grouping. So I have 5 dead trees and 2 live ones.
"Tanuki" is creating a live wood mixed with found deadwood. To form a "fake old tree" However, there are true junipers with massive deadwood portions along the trunk (Shari) where a trunk actually was and it died off naturally or was purposly killed to induce more "age"... creating the illusion of an old tree with deadwood in a tanuki fashion is very very difficult. SO FACINATING TO WATCH
Do you still treat the plant with fertilizer following the grow period? How long did you grow out that juniper for again. I love the use of cable ties; tanuki is fun and so expressive. Peter chuckle is so infectious have a great week.
Cool vid If you eventually remove the ties will the tree not seperate from the dead wood? The curves on the outside,or will it "roll" over the deadwood?
I have two old dry Oak 'driftwoods' and a couple of Blawws. I keep saying I will try this. How do YOU treat the dead wood to prevent rotting as you water the live wood?
Hope someone in the comments can help do you know of a platform where i can send photos of my tree and get expert advice I got one as a gift did sum research and still learning and educating myself but im still scared to do cuts dunno which to prune the trunk is vertical and splits into two branches like a[ Y-shape] should I do i hard cut and start tree from scratch btw its spring by me also I think I have the orange dream japanese maple.
I heard you saying another video this is not a real tree when he's showing his natural trees with Shari he said these trees aren't real the real trees that you happen to put together like you don't manipulate all bonsais
Hey Peter do you know how tanuki is received in the bonsai world? I've talked to a few bonsai people and they kind of chuckle at the idea of tanuki like its not a valid bonsai practice. Whats your opinion?
They are just jealous - ordinary folk like you and me enjoy making Tanuki - what is the problem. I hate these "gate-keepers " in the bonsai world who try to control every thing. Who are they to tell us what we can and cannot do, (You can see this sort of thing irks me)
Can I just say that I love Peter Chan. He makes our hobby so accessible. Thank you.
Hi Peter, good to see you again. I always enjoy your teaching and what you make! Have a nice evening. Ashwin

Oh I love the live wood around dead wood. I didn't know this was called "Tanuki" but that's really cool!!

Thank you so much for your informative videos...how long do the ties need to stay on the tanuki before they may be removed usually?
Cool vid

The live wood will bond to the dead wood over time.
I have two old dry Oak 'driftwoods' and a couple of Blawws. I keep saying I will try this. How do YOU treat the dead wood to prevent rotting as you water the live wood?
Peter, would you typically carve grooves for the wrapped branches? Or will they naturally grow to look part of the deadwood?
Is the deadwood treated with anything?
NO because it was very hard and with no signs of rot.
@@peterchan3100 thanks
You left the wire on some of the branches you tied up ??? Shouldn't it have been removed?
It will be removed when its done its job. there is no rush
What the word Tanuki mean?
Trickster it comes from the japan for racoon dog believed to be a trickster ie the tree is a trick
Подскажите, какой сорт можжевельника вы использовали? С какими растениями можно создавать Тануки?
