Harley-Davidson Dealer Fees are Out of Control (Don't Get Sucked In)

- Harley-Davidson dealer fees will ruin the perfect bike, the advertised price may look good but when you sit down to do the paper work the price jumps dramatically. You shouldn't be paying a ridiculous amount on top of your Harley-Davidson motorcycle purchase especially if it's used. Sometimes you can't help that your perfect used Harley is the hands of Harley-Davidson dealer, but there are some things you can do. If the Harley dealer is trying to add on dealer fees, call them out and ask a ton of questions.
You might be able to get them waived, if not the hardest thing to do is walk away from the perfect bike.

What fees have you encountered a dealer trying to charge you on top of a used Harley-Davidson motorcycle?
Dealer markups for new bikes start at $5k in addition to paper work and other associated fees in my state.
Went in to Harley of New Port Richey. Fl to look at a Pan America. Leftover 2022 with msrp of 21,500 was 31,000 out the door in 2023.
I laughed at them
I did NOT buy a used fat bob that had about a $1500.00 fee. I questioned it, and it was for 'excess' reconditioning fees.
#1 The person that traded it in already took the hit.
#2 WTH would I buy a bike that wasn't taken care of?
Don't pay! Find out who is the top salesmen and go at the very end of the month the salesmen are paid on a tier based on how many bikes they have sold. Tell him i want to see the pink, the invoice you wont make a dime on this bike but you will get another unit to increase your tier and overall paycheck
@@LJSiar and get told to get fd
When a dealership says "Welcome to the H-D family" consider yourself fk'd.
Lol they know they got you then, you come in for the free coffee and it turns into a $500 coffee every time you visit.
You should try a Ducati. 😂
I have bought my last harley. I won't outlive the bike I have but if I do, the next bike will NOT be a harley
@@sqd37l hahaha that's the story of every boomer. By the time they figure out they're getting ripped off they're about to die.
The last bike i bought was from a used motorcycle dealership. The price listed was the price you paid. No extra paperwork, no finance fee. Stated what they did to the bike and a price. No haggling. The price was the price. Will go back to them when i need a newer one.
That's what I like right there, I get the prep fee and whatever but just tell me the price and I will decide from there if it's fair to me for what it is. My dad was in sales for 30 years and worked at dealer like that once, he loved it from the salesman's point of view. It made his job easier and the customers really seemed to like it, that concept needs to come back.
Tired of the bullshit fees , oh this bike is 3k over list ? For what ? Fuck off, that's bullshit MSRP is there for a reason on a new bike , being honest goes a long way , let me decide if it is a good deal . And yeah prep fee on used bike , go scratch your ass, what a wash and oil change , make it reasonable.
@@GixxerFoo Aren't they getting prep fees times 2 since it's taken from the person that traded it in?
If you question the low ball trade in, part of that IS the prep. it's just the way it is.
Enterprise should start selling bikes, their claim to fame is the price on the sticker is the price you pay.
What dealership???
I've been recovering my HD dealer fees by showing up and eating every free hotdog and every free beer I can get. Not sure how many more beers it will take to get to $1300
LMFAO that's great, that's one way to do it. I never thought of it like that!
Considering the hot dogs at Costco are a buck fitty, that’s a lot of dogs!
@@mellsterr6192 I hear ya, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. LOL

Harley dealers in IL. Charge a 795.00 safety inspection fee, 358.00 doc fee , full sales tax and sometimes another prep. Fee. Buying private all you pay in IL. IS A 25.00 tax, plus of course plates and title fees. This saves a private buyer thousands! GO PRIVATE!
Absolutely! That's the only way to go, it sucks though if you find the perfect used bike at a dealer. The price is fair but then the add ons come into play.
That Windy City group is famous for doing this nonsense.
So... Since they are charging you a "safety inspection fee" and something catastrophic fails, causing you to get hurt, They are now libel instead of Harley? LOL!
@@serafinsilva1055 if it doesn’t fail on that initial ride home, HD won’t honor that anyway. They will argue that you can’t prove it was like that when you got it from them.
LOL I know exactly which dealers do that. They don't even check anything
The toughest part about getting the “right” deal at the time and place you want it is having the discipline to be willing to walk away. If you can’t get what you want, at the price point you think is fair and honest, you have to be willing to find it at another dealer or at another time. Just walk away.
That's so hard to do when it's everything you been looking for, can't get excited and sign your life away in the heat of the moment.
Just like car dealers, motorcycle dealers do not want to give you an out-the-door price. They want to get you in with the finance manager and hit you with all this extra stuff. That's why I'll never buy a new bike or a car.
Finance manager, that's the other person it's not my responsibility to pay for. To me that's something the sales person should do is run your credit and see where they can finance you.
@@GixxerFoo Well, the finance manager isn’t really the credit specialist, he’s just a higher level salesperson. When people think of him as something other than a salesperson, they are suddenly compelled to pay extra money for whitewall tires - AND finance at 18% for 120 months!
@@deebedwell580finance manager is the "Warranty Specialist" 😅😅😅
Buying my first and only harley, I knew there would be a learning curve. It was an ok experience. In the end, I didn't feel like they earned my repeat business. The accessory parts sales experience sucked! Plus, during the warranty, I've had them service my bike 3 times for over $500 each. I thought It was getting the full service inspection. They didn't even check the air filter. As an Aircraft Mechanic, I can wrench and was willing to support my local dealer to build a community; I just didn't find what I was looking for.
That's part of what is killing the company right there is the dealer experience at every level. They wonder why a lot of people don't come back to Harley after dealing with experiences like that!
Bought my '93 FLHS October 1992 off the showroom floor the day they put it out. $11,700. Still riding it.
Have not ever wanted another HD after the bad stealer experience with a CVO VROD. It was good in a straight line, but was always draggin' something in corners.
I have an '09 FZ1 for corner carving and track with 153 rwhp.
The hog is what it is, and I can work on it and I support my local indy.
I was looking at a used road king a couple years ago and the dealership wanted to tack on an $800 prep fee, which they add on to all used bikes. I asked what it was for. They said that fee is their average cost to get a trade in ready to go so oil change, new tires, etc. I took my trade back the next week to see if we could work out a deal. They looked at my trade and gave me a fair figure to start then noting it needed tires, oil change and state inspection, started taking the cost of those off the trade value. I asked if they were gonna charge the next guy the $800 fee when they sold my trade. They said they would. Essentially they were double dipping. I politely told the salesman they were trying to screw me and I won’t do business with them.
You did the right thing by walking away there, it's insane how they get away with stuff like this.
I had the exact same experience at Conrad, Harley, Davidson, in Illinois. I refused to pay their safety fee on the used bike and then they tried to take away from my trade-in and I told him the same thing and then you’re going to have the new owner pay it too you’re like the government taxing us twice . Worst thing is that every person there acted like they had a attitude then and didn’t even care about us as a customer. I ended up going and buying a brand new bike at Illinois Harley but with outrageous high prep fee, but to justify that I got him to throw on a sissy bar and labor for nothing. I spent hours haggling at dealerships and still felt like I got ripped off, but maybe did a little less for doing so.
Our dealership just added a $45 admin fee for all service work orders!! Unbelievable!
I would imagine that's in addition to "shop supplies", that's ridiculous. They act like it's some kind of honor to do business there.
I live in Poland (European Union). I bought 2 new motorcycles and one used 6-year-old motorcycle from the dealer. There were no strange fees, and they were even happy to offer various discounts. In the case of a used motorcycle, the commission was small.
Used bikes are big business. I worked for a dealer and I would watch private seller ads. Bikes would sit and sit, someone would be asking $7500 (USD) and I would get cash from the owner go and pull out 5K in cash. Say I work for a dealer, I want the bike and put the cash on seat. We got it for 5 and put it out front $9995, come off 500 bucks to makes someone feel like they got a deal. Still got about 4500 profit on it, that's the inside on a dealer.
@@GixxerFoo In 2018 I paid 21 000 PLN for 2012 sportster superlow. Dealer bought it from previus owner for 19 000 PLN, so dealer took only 2000 PLN (about $500).
In 2016 I bought new sportster 883r (2015 from Last year). Price was 42000 PLN but I paid 33900 PLN.
In 2020 I bought new softail street Bob. Basic price was 62000 PLN but I bought it for 56000. I wish the prices were like before covid. It was easy to buy new Harley.
Last year I bought a 2020 heritage with 3300 miles on it. They wanted to charge me 800 bucks for a reconditioning fee, what needed reconditioning, nothing, started to walk out the door, they removed the fee and I made them reduce the price of the bike
Very nice work! I love how the fees magically disappear. I had the same thing with a dealer once and by the time he said oh we won't charge you that I was just done.
@GixxerFoo it's like ask for forgiveness vs permission
Maverick Harley-Davidson in Texas tried to tack on a bunch of junk fees when I bought my used bike. I was in the office negotiating for over an hour. It wasn't until I walked out the door that they came out to the parking lot and finally offered to remove them.
That's how it's done right there! I had a similar experience where I said up front I am not paying the "fees". The guy was just so arrogant and a comment he made got me to walk out, I literally told him I am just kicking tires. "Are we doing this or what"? I shook my head and said, not today and not here.
Gotta be willing to walk away.
Get 'em last day of the month. Look for the sad sales rep...
I’ve always built my own bikes from scratch, so I don’t have to worry about a dealer, or Individual screwing me.
There's nothing wrong with that and you cut out all the bs!
👍👍👍👍
That’s what I want to do too. I can’t find a bike I want nor can I find a dealer near me I want to support.
I was looking at a used bike at what used to be Ray Price HD in Raleigh, N.C. several years ago. A salesman came up with all the usual talk and I told him flat out I was not able to buy, I was just looking. He asked if I wanted to take the bike for a test ride. Well, sure. I'll take a ride whenever I get the chance. Rode it and when I came back he wanted to talk some more. Well, it wasn't a "talk" it was a hardcore sales pitch. The man was very aggressive. I could hardly get a word in edgewise. This sort of thing turns me off and especially did so since I told him I was not in a position to buy right up front. One thing I noticed, in all his fast talking, was that he was going to charge me a shipping fee. On a used bike? No way! I reminded him that I had told him I wasn't looking to buy and then he acted all upset, pretty much said I had wasted his time. I felt like if anyone's time was wasted, it was my own. He said he had motorcycles to sell, which meant he was pretty much done talking to me. I told him good luck with that, a comment he didn't seem to like at all. I started to find the manager and see what he thought of what had gone down. Then I thought, why bother? This guy is his own worse enemy. I checked back by a few weeks later and he no longer worked there. Wonder why?
I won't turn down a chance to ride anything lol, I've dealt with that crap. If you've ever seen the movie "Used Cars", there was dealer called Lynn Hickey Dodge in OKC, it was a lot like that. Tire spikes that let you in but not out, they would valet your car and hide it, it was the worst of the worst. I could almost see some Harley dealers getting to that level of insanity.
At least he wasn't trying to sell you a lottery ticket to buy a new Harley. I went into the Miami HD dealership 30 years ago to buy a new bike with hard cash in hand. But they would only sell a lottery ticket giving you the privilege to buy a new bike at inflated prices. I told him to go procreate himself, and bought a used bike from an individual. One day when us boomers die off so will Harley with no entry level bikes to attract young people they will all buy Honda instead.
Color option fee is ridiculous. The bike is on the floor already painted and they want to charge extra for a factory color.
Surprised they don't charge a cover fee to walk in the door.
Black was the base color, now it's grey. Now they are charging more just straight gloss black.
I went to an autobody paint supply store for auto paint. White was $30 for a pint. Red was $90 for a pint. It actually costs a lot more for certain colors of automobile paints. I'm not saying $895 is justified, but it might actually cost them $150 more to paint it a different color.
My local dealer adds a$649 doc fee and $849 dealer fee. RIP off bastards.
That's exactly what I am talking about when I say junk fees, dealer and doc fees that's such a joke.
Have the strength to get up and walk!!!
@@FloatingFire358 l would never pay any rip-off fees for anything.
@@frankmarkovcijr5459 sorry! I didn't want to imply you did, trying to encourage others to walk off the deal . Its the same at almost all dealerships, not just HD.

Thank you! Finally summer and we can start getting out riding without freezing to death! Thank you for your support!
No extended warranty ever for me. It's a rip off even if I didn't invalidate it in the first 1K miles by modification. Buy the thing, do NOT finance it for any more than it's worth and own it. Screw the HD dealers. They're(in general) thieves. If you need to finance a motorcycle for more than a year, think again before signing a debt note for it. It is a losing proposition. You don't really own it and you're gonna get burned. BTW, if "Eag;eMark" financing appears on your credit report, count on losing 50 or so points. They're considered a consumer finance company for high-risk borrowers. Do it through your own bank and stay away from HD dealer financing.
I would honestly say Harley's financing is pretty predatory for some people. You can easily end up paying for that bike 3 times over in interest if you ever do pay it off. You can tell when someone is trying to selling a CVO for more or close to the price of new. Buyer's remorse is a real deal.
No matter how cheap you buy a bike , it’s constant money out when owning any bike, especially if you ride that thing regularly.
But…. we love em!
We sure don't buy them as a retirement investment lol, but they are so worth the money spent.
If it's a good bike, most of that money is going for tires.
Good content as always!
Sadly that's all it's turned into these days!
Here in Ireland, I purchased my 2003 Fatboy 2 years ago from the main Harley Davidson dealer, the owner of the shop is Biker and president of a 1% MC and gave me a great trade in deal on my own motorcycle, fantastic to deal with.
That's awesome! You know as long your on the good side of MC you're in pretty good vs the latter.
Now he knows where your bike is, for when he feels like sending some of his club members over to steal it
Make 'em an offer and then walk away.
Great info as usual, thanks. It's going to be more relevant as all the new changes from H-D & the EPA start to run the costs up on new bikes. The dealers & bike shops are going to have more & more leverage. Unfortunately, those that are first time buyers are going to be more compelled to buying from a dealer thinking that it is safer to buy from them and I for one don't trust them. Even when you know the people. Sadly, the nature of the sales business.
You are 100% correct, I know I am not telling most people that watch the channel what they don't already know. You hit the nail on the head is that first time buyers feel safer buying from a dealer, in some cases it's more expensive but it might be best.
I will never buy a bike from a dealership.
I tried to buy a used bike from a dealership, a few years ago. I was willing to put up with their slimey tactics, to a point. I tried multiple dealerships, too. I cannot stand them any more.
It's that kind of garbage that turns so many people off from the brand!
When I started riding 12 yrs ago Harley dealer always had a good amount of people shopping.
A few months ago I acquired a 2nd bike so went in a few times to get parts, the showroom is like a ghost town now.
They have pretty much run everyone off to other brands or to the used bikes the way they have done things.
I enjoy watching on Fridays most of the time, other times i like to wait for all the great comments left behind, this is one of those times.
Cheers GF...
The comments do get really interesting, I try to keep up with them over the weekend and catch up with the rest on Mondays.
I had the exact same experience at Conrad Harley in Illinois . I literally told them you’re like the government taxing us twice. I refused to pay the fee on both bikes, and then have the new owner have to pay the fee again . The funny thing is their motto is “honesty upfront “ the truth is they sugarcoat it. when I brought it to their attention, they only seem to be pissed off. Didn’t even seem to care if I was a customer or not. I ended up going to a different dealership and buying a new bike. I paid their disgusting outrageously way over expensive prep fee at illinois Harley but to justify that they paid for the parts and labor for my sissy bar . At least they seem like they wanted me as their customer. I spent hours haggling and I still feel like I got ripped off , but maybe not as much as I would’ve had I not
That's insane, it's just unreal that dealers act like that and lose sales over that garbage. Even crazier is how they stay in business with people actually buying bikes there and love the place.
Have not had the pleasure (?) of purchasing a bike from a dealer...was fortunate enough to find my 2005 Sportster XL200C and 2004 FXDL thru private sellers. 🙏
You aren't missing much and they sure treat it like you should be grateful to buy one from their dealer.
Great channel man, I look forward to it every week. My old cammed 88 is smoking from rear cylinder with a noise. Now’s the time to big bore. My question, I hope you can answer. Should I go S&S 100”? Will I see a big improvement? What can I do about my heads? I got the biggest Fueling kit/cams before I have to install springs. On the cheap, what direction should I go? Can’t really afford new heads but they’ll be off. Ideas?
The 100 inch kit is $$ compared to a 95", if you're working on a budged the 95" with some bolt in cams would really be some bang for the buck. A nice mild port job on the heads would run you about $800 bucks to port and get the heads cleaned up. You'll need valve springs unless you go with a bolt in cam. If you're goin on a budget the 95 inch kit with some bolt in cams, clean up the heads and it'll rip hard over stock!
@@GixxerFoo I couldn’t find the Twin Power brand 95” kit you recommended in a video from 3 years ago. Any other recommendations?

P.s. save on Fees, and by your harley, private party.all the good stuff has already been added, ect, ect. Cheaper to rebuild the motor, than to by a Bike, I.e. financing.
Harley is happy to help with private party sales now with financing, they hit you with fees there too.
Loved the line, "Some people don't buy Harleys because they Know too much".
Rode H-d for decades, last one I owned was a 2000 FXDX that was in 2000 bought it new. That'll be the last one.
Switched to Victory in 2018( would have sooner but the fixed income wouldn't let me).
Started riding in 1964 and Victory is absolutely the motorcycle I always wanted.
H-D is robbing you with their fees. Haven't bought a bike from a dealer since leaving the last dealership I worked for.
👊🏻WHATS UP PAL👊🏻 I know this feeling!
I hate the games and fees some places to try to play!
First off, realize the salesperson and other dealership personnel are not your new friends. As soon as you leave they will forget your existence. Second, vote with your feet and walk out. They will call you (and act like your new friend) to come back in to the dealership. Third, the finance department personnel are not to be trusted. Say “No” to everything they ask you. Have your financing done ahead of time at your bank/credit union. Last, leave your ‘gotta have it’ emotions at home. Now practice saying “No”.
That's some the best buyer advice I have ever heard and everyone should hear that!
Years ago i saw a brand new 2 year old unsold sportster on the dealership floor. Complete with the dealership bling and needless markup.
Then i saw that they weren't moving off of sticker. Well DUH! No wonder that bike was gathering dust on the showroom floor. Who pays list prices and or over for a 2 year bike?
Remember, they can charge anything they want & just might get it if they wait long enough. Just know what you want & what you are willing to pay before you head in the door. Like I always say “ I’m always looking & occasionally buying”…
Absolutely and they will charge whatever they can get away with!
Unfortunately there are many that will pay whatever they charge just because it is a Harley, same goes for Indian. Before getting my RE Hunter I rode, and still will ride my 1997 Valkyrie, made in the USA BTW. I shut up a Harley boy a couple years ago running his mouth by showing him the made in USA stamp on the bike.
Over the years (since 1990), I've gone to my local H-D dealership on 4 separate occasions wholly prepared to by a new motorcycle. The dealership screwed the pooch every single time. The last time (October 2023) they had the audacity to charge $1945.75 in fees plus an additional mystery deal add on of $755.61. I don't care if the greed is corporate's or the dealership's...all I know is that they seem content to be 0 for 4 in sales and I can't be the only customer that they've turned away. I'll continue to buy used from an independent shop or private party.
That's bad, it's amazing they even stay in business and even more amazing people will pay that too!
I've purchased two bikes from HD of Edmonton, one barely used, one new.. Both times, the price on the tag was the out the door price. Both buying experiences were great. Maybe our rules are a little different up here in the Great White North. Either way, I've cultivated a great relationship with the staff at the dealer and still own both bikes.
Last Harley I bought was from an Indian dealer. Price was actually pretty good on the bike, and they had a doc fee that wasn't too bad, but my final negotiated price was OTD. They didn't make me insure it or plate it, and they delivered it 40 miles to my house as it was cold weather season. Yea for the Indian dealer!
That's awesome to hear! Indian dealers usually have really good deals on used Harleys. Sounds like they took care of you and treated you right!
My wife went into Seacoast HD in NH knowing what she wanted to buy and they were such jackasses she walked away and bought a used one from another woman.
She did the right thing not putting up with their crap if they are going to treat her like that!
That’s why I buy used Harley’s privately. WAY better prices and deals. Let someone else loose all that money 😂
Good Vid... Local dealership, it does help I know them, and them me. I was in there 2 weeks ago. Was caught looking at a '23 (new) Heritage. They offered to cut 1g below MSRP, and scrub the prep, & trucking. Even offered 1.9apr. Economy is struggling a bit in my area. Floor was covered in used and new bikes. Several '23's... When in DFW metro, or Austin TX markets, I feel the hustle. I ask for out the door number off the top. Just that seems to sort the Wheat from Chaf.
Thank you! That's awesome! Sounds like you found a good dealer! Can't beat them waiving fees and kicking some more off the top!
ALL FEES are silly because they're already priced in, used or new!
in the UK there is no charge for change of owner you can do it on line and the DVLA will send you a new log book for no charge
Now that's really nice, I wish we had something like that here in the States.
I returned from deployment prepared to buy a Fatboy Lo for cash. They never even gave me the time of day, so I left. The way they treat their customers if you don't come in looking like a 1% MC member is astounding
I don't blame you one bit for walking away, they act like they are doing you a favor rather trying to actually sell you on the bike.
I bought mine Military Sales while abroad USS Midway VA-115 1981-83. Picked it up Portland Motosports in Fall of 83. Paid $25 Dealer set up fee. Still own and ride that Shovelhead.
Those Shovels are some fun bikes! Pretty cool you still have it after all these years!
Hey gixx, good stuff man.... down here in NZ ,if your buying a new bike the price you see on the card is what your paying, even then you can do a small amount of negotiating, but if your doing finance there's a doc fee..$300ish I think..you guys go it tuff in USA 🇺🇸
It's hard to buy a vehicle here in the states, it is such a game! Thank you for supporting the channel!
I worked at an indian dealership where we charged a total of 695 dealer fee. That was it
A few years later went to work at another indian dealership. They charged 995-1495 on freight fee. 995 dealer fee and 499 dealer prep. It was quite difficult to sell bikes
I can see the 695 especially on a new bike, freight and prep etc. But you get anymore than that and people walk out, which is horrible if you're the one selling the bike.
No matter what extra fees the dealer charges it is all worth it. Harely's are the absolute best and most efficient way to convert money and gasoline into noise known to man.
Lol that they are, but fees can make the deal absolutely not worth the purchase.
My local HD still has not lowered prices on their 2023 bikes.
That's crazy, I've had people comment on the steals they got on 2023 models cause a lot of dealers are trying to get rid of them!
never bought from Harley dealer, but I have always haggled with an "all inclusive" price, thats means total, no hidden fees, and works well at used car dealers.
as for me, i have no intentions of ever buying a NEW Harley, i was 1 that dealers mistreated in the 90's and they went after the yuppies, several places wouldnt deal with me to sell me oil, then 1 dealer had a bike i liked, tried to work a deal, and I was offered peanuts for my old shovelhead, $600 claimed it was worn out, needed lots of work, they argued about transmission leak? I still had the factory chain oiler working, which keeps chain lubricated, but they used the oil splattered chain rear wheel to say it leaked, i walked out cussing, only been back 1 time in 15 years, that was to order new key.
I don't blame you a bit and they wonder why they aren't selling as many bikes these days!
@@GixxerFoo well after the mess in the 1990's, then that, I have always had used bikes, bought from individuals, & I wear my patch upside down, if you remember that movement? so im a permanently lost customer, how many more i wonder, & I have spread the word on flipped patches many years
A dealer should already build in the cost of doing business IE the overhead, the carry costs, and the employee sales commission. That is why they 'purchase' the vehicle on trade in at much less than retail to cover these costs. Therefore, the advertised price should be the asking price without any additional fees other than the doc fee...which 10 years ago was unheard of, now it's normal business. Get pre-qualified if you want the lowest interest rate as well as the known fees to be paid. The best negotiation method is to do what I do - what is my 'Out The Door cost'? Hold them to it, this incudes EVERYTHING, so that when you get that number, you can expect to be able to ride the bike off the showroom for that exact price.
Bought my last two bikes online. Last one being from Road Track & Trail. The price listed was the price you paid.
Don't know if you heard, but H-D Co. is considering mandating that all dealerships begin implementing a 'visitation fee' payable by all non-employees (i.e., the public) who set foot in a H-D dealership. No word yet as to how much the fee will be, except that it may be less for females (reportedly because on average they are smaller than men and therefore take up less space and consume less oxygen - not sure where that leaves non-binary folks). Anyways, just wanted to give y'all a heads up to bring some cash (cash only) next time you drop in at you favorite H-D dealership. Will keep you posted as soon as I find out more.
I’m calling bs on this.
That's interesting, the way some of the dealers are it wouldn't surprise me charging admission just to get in and look around.
@@GixxerFoo Gotcha ! ; )
I bought an 86 softail in northern Colorado a few years ago. Got charged close to $800 in dealership fees. Most of which I didn’t get! No fluid change, no “set up. The clutch was so far out of adjustment. It barely grabbed. I’ll always own a Harley, but I’ll never step foot in a dealership again.
That's ridiculous, it's hard to believe they would let a bike out like that even if it's an 86 model.
I've owned several Harleys, most I bought privately,so this never happened to me.I don't have brand loyalty,so if they tried to pull that shit on me,I'd be out the door in a heartbeat.
I truly wish people would walk on the fees more, maybe they would learn and quit doing it. They just get people who look at what it is monthly and they just really want it.
I bought a leftover 2023 Street Glide ST in February. No fees and two grand under MSRP. Granted I had to negotiate out but it worked out well.
I love finding leftovers they are just trying to move, that's the way to buy a new bike! Dang you got an ST, I am jealous! I love those models, puts a little sport in the touring models.
I visited greenville, sc dealer last week. Nice dealership with good inventory. No info displayed on new or used bikes. No msrp, fees, mileage on used bikes, nothing. Not for me, so I left.
I was seriously going to buy a HD a couple years ago. I didn't know exactly what i wanted, but they were constantly pressuring me to buy anything and offered me next to nothing for my trade. I left there and never plan to go into a HD dealer again. I'll never go to Road Runner Harley Davidson in Goodyear, AZ again...
There's some bad dealers out there and it seems like more bad than good. It's things just like that that will have lasting future issues for the brand.
I think most all dealers are doing this regardless of manufacturer most are not even trying to hide it, ‘additional markup’
I've seen it at several dealers aside from Harley, Indian dealers haven't been so bad about it in my area. I feel like Indian is still trying to build up the brand and that's a great way to get someone turned off by Harley markups on an Indian.
There's usually only a few people who own all the dealerships in the state you live in. It doesn't matter if you're buying a Harley or a Kawasaki, Honda, or Yamaha, and now we have China bikes.
I didn't like the direction it was going when metric dealers sold and became "whatever power sports". Something about the phrase power sports just signals the end in my mind.
I can't really give you my experience on that. I did go to my local Harley dealer here in australia, back in 2014. I ordered a Softail with a Screaming Eagle 120ci motor, ape hangers, king & queen seat/sissy bat (or rather Harley's take on a king & queen seat/sissy bar). $50,000. I was knocked back on finance. I went out, found a 1997 Softail Custom with apes etc & a dodgy gearbox for $13,000. Bought a S&S 124ci crate engine $10,000 & a Jims Fat 5 Overdrive $5,000. So for $28,000 I got almost the same bike, but instead of a Twin Cam, I had a brand new Evo engine & a bulletproof gearbox. I love that bike. More than the Twin Cam I almost bought. I am still friends with the dealership boys. They are great people. My only gripe is they won't look at any bike built before 2000
Happy trails, Cowpoke
That's awesome! That hot Evo has got to be a monster and honestly a much better engine!
wanted to buy a 1994 sportster with cash in pocket. the guy really gave me the run around talking about probably hard to find a bike etc, and i asked if the bike i was looking on the sales floor for sale, he said yes but he didn’t see me as a HD rider. i walked next door and bought a new honda shadow, cash. I am not sure if I will ever buy a harley.
That just blows my mind how they act like they are doing you a favor rather than trying to sell you on a bike.
My most hated thing they try to do is the service fee on both ends. They give you less on a trade bc they’ll have to let the service department go through it and see what it needs. Then they try to hit you with a service fee on the used bike you’re buying. Nope
That's exactly how they do it, try to justify every aspect of low balling you.
My buddy traded his Super Glide in on a brand new U Glide it was only 3 years old very low miles they did not give him shit for it They then turned around and sold it for 3 grand more then he got The bike only sat there a week before they sold it We know the guy that bought it 😮
I worked in a dealer and that's exactly what happens. We would scout the private seller ads, for example we'd offer cash $5,000 on a bike someone is asking $7500 for. Then we'd put it on the lot for $9,995 then take 500 off for someone make 4500 .
GIXXER FOO RULES . I MOSTLY TUNE INTO HIS CHANNEL ALWAYS.
Thank you! I really appreciate your support keeping the channel going!
The biggest 'garbage fee' on every HD is the MSRP.
I'm not going to say you're wrong in any way, that's exactly where it starts and it snow balls from there.
In my area all motorcycle and car dealers add a bunch of BS fees. Always make an out the door offer. Just look up the NADA value guide and find out what the tax, and tag fees should be and make an offer. Either they take the offer or they don't.
That's the best way to do it and they don't like it when you bring up the book, try to bs you some more.
Friend found perfect bike online. Went to dealer, looked at bike. Asked price. Was told that the payment could vary. Guy said he wanted the bike's price. They wanted his info for financing. Guy left dealer frustrated. All the small dealers are being swallowed up. Not sure who likes the dealer experience. I sure don't.
That sounds insane but that's exactly what they do!
I had such a poor experience when buying my 2022 xl1200x that I will never go buy another Harley. I just totaled that bike and will be replacing it with an Indian Sport Chief simply because of the poor experience from start to finish. I'd much prefer to buy a Low Rider S, but there is no way on earth I am giving them my hard earned money again. (PS. I'm good...just lots of road rash. And yes, I wear gear.)
I feel you, that's why I say Harley shoots themselves in the foot time and time again. I am a Harley guy but I can say from own experience I have had a better experience just browsing the Indian dealers. It's not surprise to me the best inventory on a used Harley are at the Indian dealers. It's no mystery as to where all those Harleys came from used.
El cajone HD was selling a 1200 sporty used advertised at $10,500. The out the door price was $16,500 with fees
That is absolute insanity and just taking advantage of people... sad part is people probably got taken by that too.
I wanted a Harley, so I went to my dealer as several bikes were priced right for me. Shit what a waste of time, I looked they went in the office and came back with way bigger payments than they said and advertised. I gave my dealer every chance to sell me a ride but, in the end, I stood there and watched the salesman's shoot himself in both feet. Ya know by the time I left I was angry and sad at the same time; the guy didn't even seem interested in selling anything. What the hell has happened to Harley Davidson.
I can't stand dealers like that, that turns me off so fast. I don't blame you a bit for walking out of there.
Wife attempted to buy a used Softail Slim at Rock and Roll JD in Ohio . Initial price was $14,000 . She was putting $4000 down. After all the add-on BS ( dealer prep,delivery,1 year warranty, etc) payoff after 4k down was another 24k. Noped tf right out the door.
Oh hell yeah I would of been out the door too! That's just insanely crazy, I don't see how they stay in business like that.
I’ve purchased several Harley-Davidson motorcycles new. I shopped around at different dealers to compare prices. Now upfront, I knew about how much the dealers were paying. I knew they needed a profit. But they weren’t going to get it all from me. I purchased a 2009 Road Glide because of the new frame. I got a good deal. I upgraded in 2021 to the new 2021 Road Glide Standard after shopping around to get a good deal.
That’s the secret. Shop around and don’t be afraid to walk!
Absolutely, especially if you're not afraid to take a road trip to get a bike too. You can find some deals if you're willing to do some traveling.
thank phuk i live in England where the price on the ticket is what you pay, new or used
I wish it was that way here! No games, no bs, price is the price, that's hard to find here in the States.
A first time buyer is not going to buy a $25,000 motorcycle. A used bike for sure.
Uhhh no especially if you're a first time buyer, heck I've had several and I still won't pay 25K for one.
I am not sure about that, I have met many new bikers who have to have a Harley, or gold wing for their first bike. Along with their brand new leathers that their wear on 100F days, as well as their black tshirts on those blistering days. But what do I know, I buy white t-shirts in the six pack at Walmart.
Most motorcycle dealers charge absurd fees. I was looking at a klx300. Base price was around 6k. Tax + dealer bs fees it would’ve been $9,168 out the door. What the hell.
You gotta be kidding me?! On a KLX300?! I would of walked out of there and never looked back.
@@GixxerFoo did.
How is it that I bought a 2023 Lowrider S that stickers for $18199. Put $5500 down and still finance $18100. The math ain't mathing.
That's literally what a lot of people are finding out with Harley and even buying a car or truck these days.
I like buying used twin cams and evos (carbureated) from women who didn’t put many miles on em.
I see you know the secret, you see and add with all kinds of extra gear and accessories and you can tell someone got excited and lost interest.
They can show all the fees that they want, but in the end NEVER EVER EVER pay anything over MSRP of the bike OTD… ie., MSRP is max price including all of the fluff and dust that a dealer says they need too sell you that bike. Point of Fact, new CVO/ST dealers are asking $5000 over MSRP so $47,999 to $49,999 here in SWFL, when the bike has an MSRP of $42,999.00 believe me when I say you CAN get that CVO/ST come September for nothing more than MSRP OTD. I bought a FAST JOHNNIE RG 2023 in October for just that. Now dang it they have some of the 2023 that got delivered in January 24 and you can actually save money and get it under MSRP out the door.
I keep hearing of people finding leftovers for crazy cheap, sometimes 5K off msrp but I can say for sure you're not finding that where I live. I would be willing to take a road trip for a leftover 2023 or 2022.
Kawasaki charges over 300 dollars for a basic oil change. All dealerships are getting out of hand
That is absolutely insane for an oil change! I get things have gone up but my gosh that's crazy!
I call bs. I had an H2 done for $135.00
Only thing i ever get from harley dealer is a battery when you call they give you 1 price you go to get it it be $20
I have experienced that same thing myself as well.
It's been a long for ever that I've bought a used bike but I did see one that I would have bought if I didn't already have a new bike. A beautiful white 89 springer at a Harley dealer.
Every now and again you will find a gem like that at a dealer, these days they don't have anyone working there that knows anything about them!
I have always gone the direction of buying privately. I get the safety done as part of the deal so my only extra fees are for reviewing the condition of the bike and getting it certified. You get dealer expertise without dealer markup. Ride on!
That's the beauty of those little shops! You don't have all the dealer BS.
There are so many sweet used Harleys on fb marketplace with very low miles right now people are in need of cash its a buyers market
You ain't kidding, I have been shopping market place too and there are some deals out there!
Laidlaws Harley Davidson in Southern California is the best place to buy a new or used bike. No markup or any other add on $$$. Jerry, Matt and Brent are the best.
They know how to do it right and that's why they've been in business for generations!
When I bought my first bike I got taken to the cleaners, I was completely unaware of dealer fees. I bought a new left over bike from the year before. It was $3k off MSRP and after all the dealer fees I ended up paying MSRP for a bike that was already a year old 🤦♂️ and that was at a Triumph dealership
I don't doubt it, dealer fees and crap are out of control everywhere. They are just trying to fork you out of everything your worth even though you are trying to make a purchase and keep them in business.
I brought my 88 2006 ultra classic HD paid cash now with 45 thousand miles on it I need replacement parts HD can't help me I'm done with them
Bought my last new Harley in 2016. Couldn’t sell the old 2008 bike, nobody wanted it. Had to trade it in. Nobody wants a used bike anymore.
I was looking to pick up a bike in 2022. My local HD dealer had a used bike I was interested in, but didn't list the price on the website. I filled out their online form requesting a price but they tried the hard sell of getting me on the phone, and trying to get me to come into the dealer. (I was looking to see if it was in the ball park of what I was willing to pay because I didn't want to waste their time, or mine) They flat out refused to give me a price unless I showed up in person, then they didn't have the bike they advertised and tried to talk me into something else.
I had also emailed a local Suzuki dealer, who gave me an out-the-door price over email. I went to the Suzuki dealer later that day and bought the bike. So, HD lost a sale by playing stupid games!
Annnnd Harley wonders why the aren't selling as many bikes, that's some serious BS and they played bait and switch at that.
I found the bike that I wanted at a dealership but I really didn't need the bike. I went and looked at it and saw it had about $4,000 in upgrades but I still wasn't sure if I wanted to buy it. After looking at the same bike online the price was in the middle ($500 difference +/- ) but they didn't have the upgrades. I shot them a tax, title, out the door price and they accepted. I left happy with the price, the deal, and the experience.
Nothing wrong with that and that's how it's done. If they don't take it, take your business elsewhere.
Actually curious to see what they're going to try to charge me for a front tire as the current one is bald replacement... I know I need brakes
If you're going to the dealer, it's going to be full MSRP on the tire and hour of labor at likely anywhere from 110 to 175 bucks depending what the dealers labor rate is.
@@GixxerFoo they actually have a free installation promo going on now... Tho I'm sure the tire is marked up.... And they'll detail it for free...
A couple years back one of the hd dealers near me got caught over charging for dealer paperwork by the state & had to pay back customers word is it cost them 50 grand to pay back LMAO !
Holy crap! That hurt, but that's what they get, good to hear something actually getting done about it!
I just bought a bike 2 days ago They told me it would be 2-3 days to get it because they do a full inspection and fix or replace any issues. I decided to call the service manager after no updates from my sales guy on what they were doing to the bike. He told me they were replacing the compensater and doing rear brakes. Should I be worried or glad they are fixing it ? I think I’m gonna go there today and try and talk to the tech. Btw..they are replacing compensater the the Screaming Eagle.
They are doing a great job it sounds like! That's gonna be worth getting it done and out of the way no so it's not an issue for you later. They are doing it right putting the SE in there, what year is it?
2010. 35,000 miles
I got a Vrod Muscle demo bike from a dealer in Australia with 1600kms (1000 miles) on it, V&H pipe, SE tuner, 1st service done for less money than a new one out the door, but then we have the various government road authorities, taxes GST (read theft) that affect the running costs greatly, shop around and do your homework on the process, the internet is your friend.
The biggest nightmare for a dealer is a well informed customer knowing what the cost should be before they walk in the door! Those demo bikes can be a really good deal!
And the internet can screw you too
The fees were one thing but the lie of come on in we have 3 used Sportster 1200 Customs in stock like our website shows and they had none. Tried to upsell me from a $7,500.00 1200 which is pricey already to a Softail Standard for $14,998.00+ tax, fees, and financing. I walked away, helmet in hand
I would of done the same thing! Sounds like a good old bait and switch there!
My next ride will be built for $500 a month. It will be American built with American parts and fabricated by an American biker. $500/mo used to go further, not longer...collect the parts now or get "skruwed" later...Harley ain't building Harleys anymore in my opinion. Not what us old timers would call a Harley anyway. I got stupid once and thought I want a new bike. I went to the dealership expecting a great deal and years of service. I walked out with my jaw dragging behind me. I couldn't believe the motorcycle I wanted would cost more than rent at the time. That's when I decided to look for what I wanted and found it in 5 gallon buckets shoved in a basement closet. 48 FL completely torn down. Clean title. Frame was unmolested, original parts, original Springer forks, original paint.
They are happy to hype it up and sell you a new bike but once they got your money they will turn their back on you after 10 years and wash their hangs of the bike.
Not just fees one Harley Davidson dealership I went too try to upsell the price of motorcycles this location has been bought out by another Harley Dealership back in June 2023 and they tried to sell me a 2023 Street Bob for 27,7XX. 720 monthly payments was what they wanted me to agree on. That was outrageous I just walked out of the store. I can see a street glide or a road glide, but for a street bob, get out of here.
They wanted that for Street Bob?! OMG how do these places stay in business, even more mind boggling is someone has to be biting on it or they wouldn't be doing it.
720 payments! You would never pay it off. On a 28000$ deal none the less.
The place was called Heritage Harley in IL I think it was located in town called Naperville. It's closed now they got bought out by an owner that owns multiple Harley Davidson in the Chicagoland area. A sales man at Illinois Harley Davidson in Countryside told me this.
Even if you paid $50 per month it is $36000. And I'm sure you would be paying wsy over 50. Your children would inherit your payment book. 60 years is a long time!!
My recommendation is to shop independant shops or private individuals only. My recent Dyna aquisition was done like that. No fees or surprises. My check was for the agreed upon amount, not a penny more! 120Rs are FUN!
Now that's a score finding a used bike with a 120R already installed!
@@GixxerFoo
I have known the bike for 6 years but never thought I would be able to afford it or that any of the 3 owners would ever sell it. My main ride is an 03 SV1000S, and it still is but that Dyna is badass in different ways.
