Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster Chopper Top End Pistons, Cylinders, Heads, And Intake

  • Another Episode of the 76 Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster Chopper Project where I finally get around to assembling most of the top end. I got my piston rings set in place, the gaps in postion, set in the cylinders in a most unorthodox manner, and managed to get the heads and intake manifold in place too.
It was also kind of a race against time as it looked like there was a wildfire headed my direction. So I figured if everything was going to go up in smoke, why not at least try to see how far I could get with the bike before everything incinerates. But in the end, everything turned out alright as a thunderstorm eventually pushed through and put out the fire.
In this video, you'll see my backward way of doing things, but that's just how it is in my shop when limited on the right tool for the job. Maybe it'll work in the end, maybe not. But thus far it's seemed to work out every time. Needless to say... This isn't a tutorial, so I didn't tell you to do it this way. Yours truly is NOT a professional... Just a knucklehead with wrenches and old bikes. Thanks for watching, and subscribe for more goofy material like this.

Very good. A little intake installation tip : position intake, roll in o rings - wrap one wrap of electrical tape around o rings to hold them in place while installing your clamps. Be sure to add a support brace from the backing plate of the air cleaner to the lifter block so carb does not pull intake loose on our fine, smooth roads.
You're doin fine, soon to be an Ironman !

👍Lovin' your work S.T., keep it up as long as you're diggin'' doing it my brother. I, and clearly many others, enjoy what you're putting out.
Just finished getting my kit together tonight, before I get my knees in the breeze tomorrow to go and visit my Son. Ain't it a grouse feeling getting into bed, or in my case a sleeping bag, knowing that in the a.m. you're going to be in one of the best places to be... on the blacktop with your ride beneath you.
    Go well S.T.

Good job ST! Loved watching you doing some unorthodox wrenching...very satisfying to see a young guy use his initiative...bravo mate! I actually had a hankering for an old iron-head Sportster ever since I started watching 'Then Came Bronson' back in the late 60's early 70's. That show was my favourite and started my love affair with motorcycles. I appreciate the modern tech on bikes these days, but I still miss the old days when you never knew whether you'd make it back home...that was all part of the adventure. God bless you brother, you stay safe and well with your wife. Regards from Mitch

Can't wait to hear it run.
I hydrolocked a vstar trying to sync carbs, broke the bolts off the starter, gonna buy a real manometer. Instead of the old homemade style.
Have to get a starter and put a better starter clutch in it.
Road king still needs a front master cylinder. Oh well, that's half the fun working on them. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR BUILD. Great videos!!!

Always enjoy watching the Evolution of the Ironhead project... It's going to be a sweet bike once she's done. I heard you refer to the Ironhead as your "Iron Maiden" in a earlier video right after you acquired it. I think without even trying before you even started this project, you came up with the perfect name for this bike...

One of the most frustrating things I have ever had to do was line up and reinstall the carbs to a 2001 VStar 1100 after a rebuild and replacing the intake boots. I spent more time and cursing lining them up perfectly to get them to go back in. Feel your pain on the intake piece.

Nice! Hope Harley doesn't discontinue the Sportster models. I wish they would build a motorcycle with a bigger frame and use a 1200 Sportster engine to power it. The only problem I have with stock Sportster's is the smaller frame size, and I think is why they are called girl motorcycles. 1200cc is not a small engine

Hey Saddle Tramp, She's coming together nicely. One question I have for you is did you calculate the change for the torque wrench? I saw that you had the extension out straight in front of the wrench and that will through off the torque wrench by over 25%. Especially one as long as the one you were using. You can use a extension at 45 deg to the wrench with no problems but out in front of it will really mess your torque settings up. Also if you want to learn a ton of info on ironheads check out Tatro Machines on UA-cam - his videos are amazing and he has a ton of videos on putting together Harleys. Great channel. Later

I am watch this vid I don't think I've watched this all the way yet, b u t t t you already probably know this to find out if it's leaking spray a small amount starter fluid around that looking piece of crap and if the motor races guess what it's leaking explanation is I hate them blank beeps beeps mf ing things. But I've always had luck using I can't remember the name but it's a gasket maker that I would seal it with. Good luck my brother. Old A2 Flash sign out LOL
