Going to the hair salon as a paraplegic || wheelchair user

- I used to be so intimidated to go to the salon on my own and even made my husband come with me for years so that he could help me transfer into the different salon chairs.
After a while I got sick of having to schedule my hair appointments around my husband's work schedule and he got sick of sitting around for 2 hours while I got my hair cut.
I worked up the nerve to transfer on my own and realized that it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Now I don't worry about going to the salon on my own and just figure it out when I get there!

Well done! You are inspirational! My legs shake like that if I try to stand still for more than 30 seconds but it disappears if I walk or sit or lie down, it is still restricting for everything I need to stand for and I can't walk far . I am not in a wheelchair yet but watch these video's for inspiration, even in a wheelchair you are retaining your independence and doing normal activities and are so cheerful, I moan too much.
Sweet real-life Mom & Daughter moment! You both looked amazing! Darn snow! Well done and best wishes to the family! Thanks for sharing.
Yeah darn snow is right lol. Only 3 more months haha.
Found your channel only awhile ago. You're so dynamic. And definitely empowered.
Thanks and welcome
You have been blessed with a wonderful husband, who really loves you and takes good care of you.
He does!
Hi! I hope you still read comments on this video! My stylist uses a salon chair where the arms and feet lift up for transferring. after seeing your video, I called there to ask which chair it is. They don't make the one she has anymore but she said the newer model is the Collins 7700 Styling Chair With Handicapped Access
It's a great help to have accessible salon chairs! They work for everyone
Thank you so much!!!!
Ahhh, this is the video I was asking about. Thanks Brittney! That was a lot of snow to wheel thru. To my eye, getting into the wash station chair and to the armless salon chair looked easier than getting back into your chair. I guess your wheelchair is higher. If I may say so, you transfer sooo well! And the finished result was wonderful - very nice hair style! For both of you!
Thanks!
Such a wonderful example of a great mom .. very proud of your accomplishments…so easy to give up..
Thank you so much!
Jamie looks gorgeous like a model with her hair. ❤
Yeah lol, wish I had thick hair like that!
Both your cuts look terrific!
thanks! So glad to be lighter!
Opens the eyes to problems faced by wheelchair users, and took me back to when I had hair! Lol
lol hair is over-rated!
Thanks Brittney, another wonderful video:)
Thanks!!
You ladies look great!
Thank you!!
Woohoo *wolf whistles* Thanks for the vid and your channel! 👍🏻👍🏻 So positive and awesome! Cheers from New Zealand!
lol thank you!!
@@EmpoweredPara Most welcome! Just keep on keeping on and being YOU!! You rock!
I’m addicted to your videos 😊
lol well that makes me feel good! Are you in a wheelchair?
@@EmpoweredPara no, but I just love watching you 🤗
@0:56 you need snow chains 🤣
legit lol
That wash looked relaxing.
It was!
Mother and daughter now have beautiful hair. Not that you didn’t before, but even more now. 🤗 🐨 🦘🦘
Feels so much better shorter! Thanks!
I stay in my wheelchair when getting my hair cut. No transfer needed.
I hate getting hair all over my chair lol. I've stayed in my chair a few times but wanted to learn to transfer so I could do it if I had to:)
My daughter is a hair stylist and we have a comfort cape and I get shampoos done in my chair at home. (Manual or power chair) when cutting we reverse the cutting cape such that hair cuttings are minimized and falls mostly away from my chair. Doing my hair in a chair helps her with other WC clients.
That's a really interesting video!
Maybe I am a little bit biased in the judgment, I love to go get my rebel hairs done.
Lookin great ladies!
Thanks!
you both look very pretty with hair cut
You both look beautiful!!
Thank you!!
Mommy and daughter looking BEAUTIFUL.
Thanks Ronald!
Your daughter is pretty like her mother.
Do salon chairs have spin locks for your transfer? Every salon I have been to has had chairs that spin like a top. Jamies hair is FABULOUS!! I still remember the first time I got an 'adult haircut' and how fancy I felt for like 3 days till mum made me have a shower
This salon chair did lock but the last salon I went to didn't have a lock and it was scary lol. The stylist held it but it was still kinda scary to transfer
Hair getting stuck in the casters is annoying. I've actually had it seize up those little wheels before.
me too!
Wow Brit! You and Jaime look awesome! 😍 I bet your husband likes the idea of not having to take you to the salon anymore and wait around until you're done. I know I would be.
Oh well, tell him you got a new boyfriend now. But he doesn't have to be worried about it, because I live hundreds of miles away and I'm old enough to be your daddy. ☺
lol flattered ☺️!
your haircut looks nice it looks alot thicker and more healthy, its good you got into the chair it saves getting hair everywhere and being all itchy, hopefully you could realx and enjoy having your haircut, looks like you had alot cut off by the heap of hair that was getting swept up, have you had fun styling it?
I did get lots chopped! Feels so good!
glad your happy with it and made you feel good, you will feel so fresh, have you tried styling your new hair yet?
You make transfers look easy. You both have Beautiful hair! 😍 Did you go to PT therapy for very long?
just when I was in the hospital. But then I went home and was completely dependant on my mom and couldn't transfer on my own. I relearning everything by myself when I was 18.
Im sorry if you have answered this in another video, but can you explain the leg shakes? Is this uncontrollable, and/or do you feel it? Thanks!
It's just reflexes that get triggered. It's called spasticity. And no I can't feel it.
A couple of days ago I went to a Reunion Party at a suburban hotel. There was an elevator to the rooms but there was no elevator from the lobby to the basement banquet room. I was pissed and I complained to hotel management. I just assumed - erroneously I found out - that it would be wheelchair accessible. So I wondered how you choose where you go shopping, etc. Do you scope it out ahead of time to see if the place is able to be accessed? Do you make sure you always go the first time with someone who can lift you in and out? I’m hoping that the world is getting more Accessible and Inclusive all the time, but there are days when I wonder and I get upset.
Honestly I just go and assume it's accessible most of the time lol. That's probably dumb though lol
@@EmpoweredPara I hope that you find many more accessible places than ones which are a problem. You have a lot of faith in things, in places, and in people. Strength of character. I wish I had more of this.
You look gorgeous as well. ❤
Thank you so much!
You look great.
Thank you!
@@EmpoweredPara You are welcome.
Do you have to worry about your body temperature in the cold or heat?
Yes! Mostly cold because I sweat still and can handle heat ok but definitely have to be careful in both extremes.
Question: this is coming from a person who has just come onto your channel....I noticed that you right leg was shaking. I assume this shake is involuntary. Are there things you body does that surprise you. Things that your
brain still has some control over even though you do not?
I just did a video to answer your question! It's called spasticity. Basically just reflexes.
Britney you are a beautiful lady with a beautiful family.
Thanks!
hey, how are you? i remember you for other video , i told you that i would like to teach you how to speak spanish
Remove the arms. They are screwed to the bottom of the seat. At least mine are. 😉
I haven’t used my new manual wheelchair in the snow and ice yet, it looks like a fun time lol. We’re just starting to get real accumulations here.
lol use your power chair in the snow!
@@EmpoweredPara ya I do lol but they don’t like snow all that much better. You hit ice and you go for a hell of a ride lol.
