Going to the hair salon as a paraplegic || wheelchair user

  • I used to be so intimidated to go to the salon on my own and even made my husband come with me for years so that he could help me transfer into the different salon chairs.
    After a while I got sick of having to schedule my hair appointments around my husband's work schedule and he got sick of sitting around for 2 hours while I got my hair cut.
    I worked up the nerve to transfer on my own and realized that it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Now I don't worry about going to the salon on my own and just figure it out when I get there!

    Well done! You are inspirational! My legs shake like that if I try to stand still for more than 30 seconds but it disappears if I walk or sit or lie down, it is still restricting for everything I need to stand for and I can't walk far . I am not in a wheelchair yet but watch these video's for inspiration, even in a wheelchair you are retaining your independence and doing normal activities and are so cheerful, I moan too much.

    Hi! I hope you still read comments on this video! My stylist uses a salon chair where the arms and feet lift up for transferring. after seeing your video, I called there to ask which chair it is. They don't make the one she has anymore but she said the newer model is the Collins 7700 Styling Chair With Handicapped Access
    It's a great help to have accessible salon chairs! They work for everyone

    Ahhh, this is the video I was asking about. Thanks Brittney! That was a lot of snow to wheel thru. To my eye, getting into the wash station chair and to the armless salon chair looked easier than getting back into your chair. I guess your wheelchair is higher. If I may say so, you transfer sooo well! And the finished result was wonderful - very nice hair style! For both of you!

      My daughter is a hair stylist and we have a comfort cape and I get shampoos done in my chair at home. (Manual or power chair) when cutting we reverse the cutting cape such that hair cuttings are minimized and falls mostly away from my chair. Doing my hair in a chair helps her with other WC clients.

    Do salon chairs have spin locks for your transfer? Every salon I have been to has had chairs that spin like a top. Jamies hair is FABULOUS!! I still remember the first time I got an 'adult haircut' and how fancy I felt for like 3 days till mum made me have a shower

    • @EmpoweredPara

      This salon chair did lock but the last salon I went to didn't have a lock and it was scary lol. The stylist held it but it was still kinda scary to transfer

      It's just reflexes that get triggered. It's called spasticity. And no I can't feel it.

    A couple of days ago I went to a Reunion Party at a suburban hotel. There was an elevator to the rooms but there was no elevator from the lobby to the basement banquet room. I was pissed and I complained to hotel management. I just assumed - erroneously I found out - that it would be wheelchair accessible. So I wondered how you choose where you go shopping, etc. Do you scope it out ahead of time to see if the place is able to be accessed? Do you make sure you always go the first time with someone who can lift you in and out? I’m hoping that the world is getting more Accessible and Inclusive all the time, but there are days when I wonder and I get upset.

    • @EmpoweredPara
      @EmpoweredPara  9 місяців тому

      Honestly I just go and assume it's accessible most of the time lol. That's probably dumb though lol

      @@EmpoweredPara I hope that you find many more accessible places than ones which are a problem. You have a lot of faith in things, in places, and in people. Strength of character. I wish I had more of this.

    Question: this is coming from a person who has just come onto your channel....I noticed that you right leg was shaking. I assume this shake is involuntary. Are there things you body does that surprise you. Things that your
