My favorite part is the kid in the rear view mirror lol. Kidding, but actually a very helpful video. You can’t beat these as a daily because they all come with service records considering they were fleet maintained.
Is it me or was the kid taking a nap during the acceleration test? 😁
@@Touge_Monstro I know right
Just purchased a 2015 from local PD. Never been more excited . Handles and drives like new. Quality built.

The naturally aspirated 3.7L V6 will greatly outlast the turbo-boosted Ecoboost engines.

3.5 twin turbo is way faster
@@lixhan3428 its way more expensive to maintain
Good thorough review, these police explorer suvs are growing on me, i had crown vic for years ,and a couple of caprice 94, 95, 14 Taurus, and chargers
You make an excellent point about drivers mistaking civilian Ford Explores for Police Interceptor Utility. I have had a couple of all black Explorer Sport models that I thought were unmarked police vehicles. Disagree with your opinion on the Impala 9C1 being a better performing car. Very few police departments used them over the Dodge Charger, Ford Explorer PIU, Tahoe or Taurus PI. Lousy handing from comments I have read from Police Officers who drove them
7:08 for the tach. I've driven both civilian explorer and Police Interceptor Utility. Police Interceptor Utility does have a higher operating speed by default. At around 65 MPH, my explorer will be around 1750 RPM.
I bought one myself from auction 140k for 5k and it has way more kick than my friend here with his son was willing to show punching the gas from a 0-60 is great and pursuit mode is it’s own beast from 50-90+ in no time
Also changing the center console to a updated explorer one was super easy and by far the best thing you can do
gonna miss the big steering wheel in the vic.... I'm close to swapping out for this
Most departments skipped the 2015 explorer and went with the 2016
How to connect Bluetooth on ford explorer base version??isnt it very difficult??
If you initiated pursuit mode in the trans, going faster after 70 is a lot easier
Thinking about moving on to the FPIU I currently own a CVPI
Me too, I love my 08 but these are nice
I really want this SUV
Another common mistake people make is assuming the 3.5 ecoboost is right out of the SHO Taurus. It is, but it actually makes 380 HP and 280somthin lbs tourque. Special tuning to account for the extra weight of the police equipment.
Where did you got that info?

Becareful of CO leaks...theres been issues of CO poisoning cause of leaks into the cabin. Check it thoroughly or have a CO detector inside. Other than that, nice vehicle
Thanks for the warning! Thankfully, this one does not have that issue.
This was recalled and fixed with the bottom dump exhaust tip
I saw one today in Lagos, Nigeria 🇳🇬
Yeah they may only have low driving miles but god knows how long they’ve just idled away. It would be nice if the car counted engine run time in hours too.
@DeFi Man Thanks for the info, I didn’t know that.
The idle hours ARE counted in many police vehicles. This is something to consider since it’s generally 30 miles worth of wear per every engine hour. That’s in addition to the odometer.
Good Lord, I've never seen I-81 so devoid of traffic around the Burg. LOL
9:21 😂 that caught me so off guard
In the UK we have Kuga’s and it’s depressing
so whats the bottom line?is it worth buying?
Excellent review.
Thanks man. Have ya done the Honda Fit?
man that is a slick lookin car.. I want
If it’s got a regular civilian engine, what makes it an INTERCEPTOR? The badge? I put one on my Expedition with a 5.4 V-8.
Beefed up suspension bigger brakes and usually speed Governor is removed
The civilian engine is the 3.5L this has the 3.7L. The transmission is tuned differently and the suspension and brakes are also better.
Hi I live In Naples Florida and I am looking for a white one
Can you suggest any good places?
Kissimmee Florida
Oh, you forgot to state that these have the worst headlights in the industry and Ford states there may be a recall if they get enough complaints?? Also, the replacement of the water pump will cost about $3,000. If you fail ot the agency failed to change the oil in the PTU (power transfer unit), every 31,000 miles it will fail by 80,000 miles. Beware of these costly issues. Moreover, the catalytic converters are subject to early failure
My moms had hers for like 6 months she’s drove like 60,000 and she got it with 100,000 and it hasn’t had any issues
Our police department have those as a K-9 unit
What's the difference between a police interceptor vs a regulator ford explorer I have a 13 limited and love It i was just curious
Suspension changes, PCM changes, calibration to the speedometer, upgraded brakes, reinforcement of the rear chassis, dash cluster, no third row seat, full size spare, vinyl flooring. The ecoboost 4 cylinder is never an option for the interceptor, so only the 2 V6 engines. The 2020 has one engine but it has three options, no turbo, hybrid, turbo,
@Lauren Hariton No day time driving lights. No chrome, and no Explorer badges and lastly, most come with steel rims, but there is an option for aluminum rims.
Nice looking suvs
i like The Ford Utility i got that Car but its not a police SUV and Also my dad Got a Ford Explorer
You actually can’t buy a fleet vehicle and be the first owner. Just saying. Not hating. Good video.
Good video. You need to update your hand positions on the steering wheel. 11-1 & 10-2 is old school and causes jerky steering moves. Move hands down to 9-3 or 8-4. Lemo drivers and race car drivers even lower 7-5 hand positions
Has anyone told you that you look a lot like Brad Keselowski aka nascar driver lol
What is the 3rd pedal (the one on the left) you can see at 4:42 for?
Parking break

My mom got one
Tell your mum I said hi.

Does it have a back up Camrea
From what I can tell, most from that year up did come with backup cameras. But always double check the one you are looking at if it does.
No they don't. I believe there are sensors though
Does it have Bluetooth radio?
Does your mama have Bluetooth radio? Does your uncle have Bluetooth radio? Does your auntie have Bluetooth radio? 🤔🤦🏼
Yes
Why are you lying to us so other people who don't know any better can get caught? That 3.7 liter is still fast and has awd.

Looks like the one on Carfax thats selling for 6,999.
And not all of the US Police forces have that year anymore, in NY their 2016 and up

I think the rear door handle linkage is disconnected. You just have to pop the door panels off and clip the linkage back together.
*Impahhlahhhh*
Really enjoyed the way you did the review, you went over alot of things I was curious about. I'm purchasing one next week upgrading from my 09 charger so it's a big upgrade.
Dealers never sold the 2011-2019 Utilities to the public. You had to be a police agency or government.
Not >>entirely
Saw a local dealership a few years ago had a Ford pick up that was loaded with police options brand new that was being sold to anyone because th department cancelled the order it does happen
Went over the whole car again after the drive lol
The public can buy the 2020 Explorers now, But they gonna cost 30-40K w/ the fact it is a used car now lol
just earned +1sub great review. Thinking about picking one of these up.
Can you take a picture or video of the rear wiper arm moving in action? I’m having trouble timing the replacement arm correctly, thanks
I am kind of curious, without the center console there is no terrain select knob like the regular explorer, is it relocated or just not existent? I’m guessing the AWD system on this thing is good enough that it adapts to all conditions?
No terrain knob in these. I assume the awd system does that itself
Whats the HP on the 3.7 V6?
i heard 'rumours' the 3.7 will have 'expensive' Water pump issues around 1000,000 miles?...they said if you take it to a licensed 'shop'..... it could be potentially $1800. ( for the Water pump & Labour..)? Any Thoughts on THIS Rumour?...
Yes this is true for all of them
The ecoboost has the same issue. Dont need a licensed shop. Just do it yourself.
What's $1800. in 100.000miles..
I gonna get me one and Replace the Waterpump as a Preventative Measure then you will be Good for another 100.000 miles**you put some money aside to remedy the problem before it Starts if you Reall Want to be Happy and have Peace of Mind**thats what I am getting ready to do **im selling some costly toys that I have that i really dont need to get my Interceptor water pump money ready for that rainy day**Good Luck in your decision **and be Blessed in what ever you do
Lol replace the Water pump yourself.
With all of the recent craziness like the riots and looting last summer, have you ever had any issues with someone thinking that you are a real officer when driving your Explorer? I'm looking at buying either the Explorer Interceptor or the Dodge Charger with the police package.
This depends on your area. In my area, retired cars are seen around time to time, no one really blinks at them. Plus no one overly dislikes the police by general census and riots and such are non existent. Protests happen, but nothing more. If you live in a similar area, you are going to see no issues with it. Also note, not all cars came with spotlights so if you are missing that, you could blend in as likely, no one would really notice unless they happened to know that the rims are police.
I just take my Antena's off for a few days and put the plugs back in which you can purchase on Ebay...Here in Detroit they pretty much leave you alone its the burbs where you get the Rich kid Yuppies that all the Hoopla comes from around here.. here
@@slayerjohn447 I was curious. I'm not a college student, but I live in a college town. Never had to deal with a riot, but the few protest here and there, are pretty much tame and are limited to the area where downtown meets the edge of campus.
@@danielgabriel5549 I recently found a 2015 Taurus Interceptor. It still has a spotlight and the police wheels/rims. It definitely still has the "look". It also has a small black antenna on the trunk. Not exactly sure what that was connected to. Maybe not super expensive. The city sent it to auction without taking it off. I think the price is in the okay range. The dealer is asking just over $12800.00.It has 85k miles. It belonged to the local PD here in my hometown.
@@clintonjames3173 I have a 2017 retired Explorer and have had in the college town several times for shopping and other stuff and it's just like I mentioned before, no one really bothers it or gives it much attention other than those drivers who panic for a split moment.
I had a 2015 explorer sport and everyone used to get out of the way driving down the highway
So how do you correct the ability to get out of the back seat from the inside of the car ? And can 3rd row be put into a police imceptor
All FPIU and FPIS leave the factory as fully functional vehicles so that they can use the same Explorer or Taurus line. Then they head over to the Fleet Modification Center for the application of police package options. ua-cam.com/video/gr7p09HNuHM/v-deo.html
What this means, is if you still have the door cards with the handles, the release cable is just removed from the handle and tucked into the door. One can just remove the door card and reconnect the cable to the handle - check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/hDUeIwbPfn0/v-deo.html . There is also an option to disable the rear door power door locks - this is done with a connector right under the driver's side door scuff plate trim (at the driver's side floor between the seat and the door). The factory unplugs this cable if that option is selected, and it can easily be plugged right back in. the plug is called out in the modifier's guide.
Third row seat is not practical. They install the rear crash member and stiffener beneath the cargo area floor, and that takes up most of what would be the leg-room in the footwell. Also, the FPIU comes stock with a full-sized spare, not a donut... That takes up the space the 3rd row seats would mount over. Finally, I want to show you this video about a rear crash test of the civilian model Explorer: ua-cam.com/video/iwHVzAiWvFU/v-deo.html - my in-laws asked why I didn't get an Explorer with a 3rd row (so I could pick them up from the airport with everyone else in the family), so I sent this to them along with the quip: "if I got a 3rd row Explorer, I'd only ever put people in the rear row I didn't care about". This article has a fairly horrifying picture of what the rear cargo area looks like when hit at speed in the field: www.freep.com/story/money/cars/2019/02/11/ford-2020-explorer-interceptor-police-car/2782304002/ Just look how far forward that rear window frame is pressed relative to the rear doors!!!
@@Real_Tim_S know any other cool tricks for 2014-15 fpiu's?
@@chirst5874 Off the top of my head...
Get a copy of Forscan, if you can, and an OBDII-to-USB adapter - you can get into all kinds of stuff in the software. Personally I've turned on the Aux port on the radio (installed a bluetooth receiver and USB-C power adapter up to the radar platform on the dash), stereo equalization software (deeper than the user controls, makes aftermarket stereos easier), tweaked how many flashes the momentary turn signal does (bumped up from 3 to 4 to match my driving style, but there is a programmable range), tuning on "LED mode" for turn signals so you don't get hyperflash, tweaked some of the rear hatch functions, parking light behavior, instrument cluster options... goes on, and on for days ;-P
For suspension work, I looked at Steeda Autosports out of Florida - they have a better adjustable rear sway bar (can actually handle a loaded turn without a ton of body roll), and rear suspension linkages than factory (which are subject to a recall). I got some custom springs to account for weight from Coil Springs Specialties, LLC out of Kansas - they have the original coil spring specs thanks to my order, so you can tell them how much more weight you want the coils to support and they can make it happen. I did a full suspension job this past year - everything from the unibody out to the wheel studs is new. Rides like a new vehicle, and it's a blast.
Other than that - you can use the police harnesses in the center console to "lube-up" an aftermarket remote-start (or use the low-security factory version from Ford, which you can turn on with Forscan after getting your own keys with built-in-buttons and the remote start receiver), vehicle tracking, remote shutdown, etc... I mean, the coolest thing about the police model is the ease with which the vehicle can be modified - so your imagination is the limit.
As soon as I get out of California, I may look into doing a turbo and 4.2L stroker mod to the 3.7 (500HP "easy" with pump gas and a "safe" tune) - if I can't get my hands on a 2020+ FPIU hybrid first.
Hey guys, this is Aust..... oh wait, wrong channel..
Will a 2013 ford explorer 2 owners be reliable? Service record looks good! Will dealer fix if it needs work?
No. They are junk they leak carbon monoxide into the cabin and there were so many recalls regarding that specific problem. They aren’t well made
@Paul Cysz no that’s right about the mileage where they have that dreaded water pump issue and it’s driven by a timing chain so if that bearing snaps pistons hit the valves there goes the engine. I personally think those Explorers are ugly. Get a crown Vic and you’ll be satisfied, the only reason why you would want those explores is to look like a cop and it’s just not worth it
@Paul Cysz Suvs don’t handle good in the winter. You should get a bigger car with front wheel drive like an old Buick or something it’ll save you a ton of cash I would know because I live in wisconsin. Big cars have plenty of space for your dog
And fire department too
What I want to know is, how do you get that engine compartment looking brand new, please share that with us.

Sorry to burst your bubble but those seat stab panels are plastic, not steel.
Where did you find the second row seat? I mean did you purchase it online or from your local junk yard?
Thanks Iv been thinking about getting one this will probably seal the deal on me getting one
might se if I can get a regular sized steering wheel that will fit
Have you figure out how to get the vents to work in the back?

I have one thx for sharing
That's a Duralast battery.
I love your ford police interceptor
what mpg do you get with it?
Not that good I think they have higher gear ratios in the axles than the civilian explorers cuz mine waste as much gas as my cvpi
@@mibd7812 Yeah I've heard the Sedan model is only about 15% better (about 24MPG on highway vs CVPI at 21), I imagine the Utility would be even less than that.
Practical experience with my 2015 3.7 AWD, about 11K-mi average is 17.75MPG on 50/50 mixed highway/city, I would describe my driving style as "spirited", and with a few hundred pounds of tools/equipment in the rear.
Anecdotally, I will comment that if you use cruise control as much as you can - the vehicle will see north of 20MPG most of the time.
How much....if you don't mind me asking?

When you buy a retired police utility
Thanks for the review. I am looking to buy a 2014. Question about the sound system... is it Bluetooth capable to be paired with your phone? And does it sound very low quality or pretty satisfactory? I understand it’s a police utility car but I am still curious. Thanks
Some of them do come with that option.
It depends....if it has Sync (the usb and aux port under the radio) then you will have bluetooth, however if sync is not available your car will never be able to be bluetooth capable.....speakers do bump though, for a cop car
William search up a KM18 on amazon. Any car can have Bluetooth
If it comes with the basic radio as shown, it may or may not have an aux input - but unlikely to have bluetooth. If it does not come with the aux input, it CAN be added. Look up FORSCAN and then find someone with a cable (they are available non-Ford aftermarket). Then a standard 1/8" 3.5mm aftermarket Bluetooth can be used - I've been using one of these and a USB-C charger switched from the delay-off accessory power port on the Police Modifier's plug - putting the phone sideways on the top-center of the dash.
If it's the basic radio - you may only get two speakers in the front doors (no other speakers). The rear door cards may not even have the speaker positions. For mine, I found a wrecked civilian explorer and took the door cards out of that.
IMHO it's a really great vehicle for an aftermarket stereo update if that was your plan from the beginning - the JL Audio Stealthbox for the Explorer fits perfectly, and on the front speakers wires they have a break-out plug in the center column to that you can separate the radio to pull out speaker level audio (to send to your aftermarket system), and then send better amplified audio out to the front doors (for better speakers). 6.5" or 6x9s in the front doors, and 6.5" in the rear doors, and those police power points become amazing aftermarket stereo power points without drilling.
very helpful I will buy one when I save enough money
Just use your EBT card to pay for it!
