Scotty Kilmer has a great video on why you should buy a police car. Many of them have idled for 500 hours or more and then drove it like they stole it😅 Cheap seats, holes everywhere from equipment that was removed and rubber plugs in the A pillar and roof. You may get a chipped ECM with no speed governor and bullet proof doors😊

The one real upside of owning a police vehicle is being able get through traffic quickly and the overall privacy, because people assume you're a cop. In my 08 CVPI I can fly up the left lane on the highway and pretty much everyone will just get out of the way for me and I almost never have anyone tailgate me. Not that I'm out to scare people or anything like that. But it is nice being able to just get where you need to go without being pestered by other people on the road.

I upfit police vehicles for a living and here is my take on what he had slightly wrong or missed.
    1. Many agencies (in my area) keep the vinyl 2nd row seats in the vehicles, most won't have bio-seats/1-piece seats installed unless they had a lot of issues that resulted in deep cleaning the vehicles.
    2. The driver's seat has police specific bolsters to accommodate the duty belt/gear.
    3. There are going to be (plugged) holes in the exterior of the vehicle and holes in the interior trim panels where we installed the partitions.
    4. The current-gen FPIU is rated for a 75 mph rear crash test with a properly installed spare tire and 3rd row bracing.
    5. Administrative vehicles sometimes use civilian versions in place of interceptors, or may be optioned with extras the standard patrol vehicle doesn't have: 3rd row, all cloth seats, carpet flooring instead of vinyl.
    6. Most agencies won't allow the PIT maneuver unless the officer is trained and the vehicle has the "PIT bar" installed. We add extra bracing (provided by the push bar manufacturer) to reinforce the "crash bar"/mounting area. We can have 3 full grown, 6ft tall adults grab and jump on the properly installed pit bar and the entire vehicle moves like the factory installed it. (We did that to prove to a customer just how strong the unit was when installed)

Ford CVPIS and FPIU have an idle hour mrters. 1 idle hour is equal to 33 miles of driving. I saw a cvpi at an auction with 11,000 idle hours plus 120, 000 miles. The engine sounded ok.. the rest of these vehicles have heavy duty cooling, oil cooler, power steering cooler.. shop around its worth the extra money to find a good one.

In San Diego County, the Sheriff's Department vehicles run the entire shift. Deputies even leave the vehicles running while they are outside the vehicles on lunch or breakfast break. The reason, per the department, is that it can take a deputy 20-30 minutes to log into all of the various computer systems that are in the car. Very bad for the environment (upgraded battery systems would be far better), but even more so for the engine and accessories.

I've lived in some areas with a lot of police activity and those cars have lots of idle time interspersed with full throttle red line acceleration. They basically get treated the way a NASCAR driver treats his rental cars.
    No thanks.

My current vehicle is a 2007 CVPI that was a prisoner transport for the sheriff’s department. It has been rock solid and hasn’t let me down yet- it had less than 89,000 miles on the ODO and less than 250 Idle hours (it presently has 288).
When it comes to purchasing a former law-enforcement vehicle, the same rules apply when looking at a used car, with the addition of looking at the idle hours. In my eye, anything over 2500 idles hours is questionable.
I would also avoid any of the Explorer, Taurus, or GM PPV variants, as all have various problems with them (the Exp/Taurus have the infamous timing chain driven water pump issue, while the GM vehicle has issues with camshaft/lifter problems with displacement-on-demand set up).

I've known several, several police officers in my life, and I've asked them all the question of 'is it worth buying a used police car', and the emphatic answer from ALL OF THEM, is "NO!"
Some of the issues you'll run into is, lots and lots of hard accelerations! And yes, LOTS of idle time, however, a lot of Highway Patrol/State Troopers will sit under a freeway overpass, on the cement incline, nose down.
What does this mean? LOTS of idle time with the engine oil pooling at the front of the oil pan, instead of evenly, or possibly away from the oil sump, where the oil is drawn in to recirculate throughout the engine.
Lots of hard accelerations, plus lots of idle time (possibly starving the engine of oil) is a ticking time-bomb.

One thing I'm surprised you didn't mention was the upgraded brakes on most police vehicles. I am a former ASE certified mechanic (not any more because of a back injury) and current ASE parts specialist, the fact that a vehicle was originally used in law enforcement makes a big difference sometimes. Although I have not come across this situation, I would think that a vehicle ordered for K9 use would have upgraded A/C and heating systems.

    • @JaredJanhsen
      @JaredJanhsen Рік тому +1

K9 units don't get upgraded HVAC. They will often have HVAC ducting re-routed from the rear air unit for the benefit of the K9 along with secondary ventilation. However, no change is made to the HVAC system of the vehicle in terms of capacity. A lot of K9 units have an automatic door popper that allows the dog to exit the vehicle if the vehicle suffers any sort of failure to the HVAC system.
