Drumming life goals: Make a living, get endorsements, inspire others.
2k19 Drumming goals: form a serious project, get the gig, tour 2-4 times, give lessons.
It’s all forming slowly, but I’ll be there sooner than later.

"I will lead you there, for I am Spartacus." Btw, those 16" or 17" hats?
I had been playing clarinet/bass clarinet for 5 years when I stepped off the bus for my first football game with my high school marching band. The drumline started playing and it took all of 3 seconds for me to realize drums were my future. I got a job that next summer and paid for my first set and never looked back.
I love playing professionally, but lately I've just wanted to get a passion project started. I also am into backpacking and the outdoors, among trying to start my family, so I don't think drumming is going to be a FULL time job for me. I love following musicians like you (living vicariously). I teach general music in public schools and am trying to get kids on fire about music that way. Anyhow, keep up the good stuff and I look forward to more content from you! =]

I started similar to you. With a dream, but my family was poor. Thanks to God my family divorced. I got to meet my stepdad who taught me everything I know about music. He is a guitar player. One day, it wasn't even Christmas or a birthday a big box came through by delivery. It was an electric kit. I didn't even ask for it but I'm pretty sure it was meant to be. 😄 I was attached to it... As if glue held me to it. I've been playing ever since. I play with my church now. They bought me a new electronic kit with different cool gadgets. And some more good news we got recommended to be recorded! A sound guy is coming next Sunday. My dreams are coming true! Can't imagine where I'd be if I never got introduced to that electronic drum set or my stepdad. 😬
Thank you for sharing this video. I hope to be like you someday too. Never stop reaching for the top you're almost there! Gotta keep that motivation!

It must be in my DNA, as I'm sure its in yours. I soon as I was able to begin to process music I was focused on rhythm, and the drums in particular. THEN I saw my first marching band, at a high school football game, and it was like everything was fused into place and its been that way my whole life. I'll never forget the moment.

I love your story, i think it's very inspiring.
For me i started playing like two years ago cause i thought i wanted to try something new and i thought that not everyone has a drumset, is an instrument pretty "cool" for me and that i was good at rythm so i started watching videos and getting information until i bought a set. I started playing. It was and still is amazing. Every time i play i focus only in keeping the beat and i forget about anything else. Now when someone hears me play i get compliments and that feels soo good cause i've been working hard on improving because, you know, it's my passion.

What inspired me to play drums was when I first saw a kid playing drums in church one Sunday so that got me interested. Now I'm involved in this organization called School of Rock in Mason, Ohio and I've performed a few shows with them. One was at Northside Tavern in Cincinnati, Ohio and two was at the Woodward Theater in Cincy and I got to participate in a benefit concert at Bogart's in Cincinnati. I'm currently starting rehearsals for a show I'm doing at the Woodward in May which is a Michael Jackson show. My goals for drumming is to be playing at special events. Like from your standard town carnival or local block party to big music festivals.

An inspiring video as always, thanks,
I started playing when I was six after watching a family friend in a band and begged my parents for a kit - years later I also saw that clip on hocus pocus and that added to my obsession (I think I used to jam along to the ‘I’ll put a spell on you’ concert scene in that film in pure ecstasy) haha.
23 years later (on and off playing cruise ships/ wedding and pub gigs) I’ve finally decided this is what I want to do professionally, I’m currently in the process of making enormous sacrifices to pursue that goal - if you never try you never know right.
Good luck to you, keep the videos coming!
    All the best, Seb

I love how humble you are Jeff, you come off as such a nice genuine guy! I started drums at 41 years old, always fancied drums but didn't have the space or means.
I had a life changing accident at 32 which left me with nerve damage / limited movement on my bassdrum foot and lots of muscle wastage. Anyways long story short, thought drums would be a good way to build my muscle / regain movement & mobility on my damaged nerve, and although I still have damage my BD speed has massively improved over the years and I can play pretty complex drum parts. Also build some calf muscle too as a result! I've enjoyed your vids from the outset and definitely learnt some cool stuff and go to grooves over the yrs.
Wishing you all the best in 2021👍

But as life gets shorter, I realize music is how I have always wanted to spend every waking moment of my life. (well, and maybe some hiking and creek-stomping, for good measure.) I started taking drum lessons a year ago today! And for 2019 I have started a youtube channel dedicated to my experimental free improvisation scene. That's a really awesome story, dude. Very inspiring! Touring someday is a major goal of mine, but I have a lot to learn yet. I currently play for my church and post covers to UA-cam. Seeing stories like show me that anything is possible and I should never give up! Thank you!

It’s definitely possible Luke! Are you doing much gigging outside of church?

Not as much as I should. However, I'm looking at getting back to it a lot more this spring and summer!

Yeah man, make that happen! As much as I love playing at church I find that the local gigs where you're paid and there's a possibility of getting fired forces you to grow.

That's a really good point. I will find more local gigs this summer, that's for sure. Thank you!

I am super inspired by your story. I have always thought that if you work hard enough at what you do and the quality of it is great then you will have those experiences no doubt. I have always dreamt of an opportunity like this so I will continue to work as hard as I can to put myself out there as a drummer.

Thanks for the inspiration bro! I've actually been trying to make that transition to full time professional drumming and your channel has been one of my biggest influences. I've been playing drums for more than half my life now and been stuck lately in this rut of just not getting the quality gigs I need and thus started my journey into starting my UA-cam channel. I figured I need to put myself out there to a larger audience and my channel could essentially be a resume to help me get legit work with artists and labels.
I was wondering what was it about your channel that got you work? I see a lot of guys that just do covers but I don't if its more helpful to go a different route this year. I'm kinda struggling to decide whats the best to put out for people to see my capabilities that could eventually lead to paying work. Thanks so much for putting out great content man. It's super helpful
