The Mr Clean vs Generic Sponge Swimming Pool Clarity Challenge
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 сер 2018
- In this video we use a generic multi-purpose eraser and a Mr. Clean sponge to see if it will really clear swimming pool water or if it is a hoax. We also wanted to see if one worked better than the other or if the branded cleaning sponge made a difference.

Actually the Video I watched was for an in ground pool and they put it in with the filter, not Skimmer!!??... Not Sure if this would make a bigger difference!!??🤔😞
This guy look just like the nicest guy on earth
Thanks for checking out my channel.
I got the same vibe
Me too 👍
Lmao
The sponges might collect algae, but you still need to treat your pool. Algae spores are always in the air which will collect in your pool. Also, any leaves ect left in the water breaks down which creates phosphates. Phosphates is what algae eats. Get rid of the phosphates, treat with a non foaming algaecide and you should be good. Remember killing algae is good, but if you don't get rid of their food sourse (phosphates) it will grow back.
Thank you for adding to the post Eric. It's great to have you here!
The algae is not from not doing maintenance on the pool.. you can have ph correct etc etc
The pool turns like this in very hot hot days.. several in a row can cause this. If the pool doesn’t have shade., gets up to 88/90/92 for 3 days....
It will turn overnight., and if you don’t catch it first day you notice it., it will get darker green.
If you shock it., etc you can’t see the algae because now it’s bleached., but if you went in the pool with goggles on., you’d see it the algae/ now white floating around.
My pool., I vacuum every other day., I scrub walls/ladder., floor etc everyday., fine net to get all small bugs etc.....the only time I had problems was when air temps get up to 95/100 for 3 days or more.
We did a huge tarp that pulls out across the pool when it gets hot ....now having shade..... it helped a lot., full sun was beating on the water sunrise to sunset., didn’t have a brake....
With the tarp it can be 100 degrees out and the pool would be 88.... huge difference and wouldn’t turn
Green...... when it did happen....I turned filter off 2 days., vacuum and backwash., but as I said ., if it happens again I’m gonna try this sponge. I use them on every thing else
I'm sorry, but this is the oldest pool store myth out there.Getting rid of phosphates is completely unnecessary. A correct CYA/free chlorine ratio along with everything else being balanced will prevent any algae issues. Creating conditions where algae cannot grow, regardless of food source, will prevent blooms. My SWG pool is 3 1/2 years old and I have never treated for phosphates and have had zero algae 100% of the time with super clear water. FC at 4 and CYA at 80. My CC is always zero.
J
Thanks so much for this . 2 year owning a pool and this last week we were hit with faint algae. We had a heat wave and idk what happened after that. I should have shocked it and/ or added more chlorine ?? Anyways , I have a shoTty summer waves with stock pump and hoping to get a couple more weeks in. I went to a pool supply store and I needed to add acid and then do a weekly “perfect “ chemical something. Said it helped with phosphates! Your comment made whatever happened to my pool click. Thanks for the comment
R.I.P to the pool cleaning businesses
lol...pools still need to be maintained.
Rip to people that think this is a “cure all” for pool cleaning
wow who would have ever thought, I have just ordered a sponge foam filter cartridge to replace the paper one but tonight I am going to give this a go.
Thanks for watching. Let us know how that works out
You know what works better? Balancing the chemistry and having a filter that works.
Fucking thank you
Yes sir ur right
Eh, that's not always the case. No matter how good your pump or chemicals are. There will always be sediments.
Even better get a salt based filter.
Ppl will always have their opinions your right but sometimes that isnt the case. My chemicals are balanced my pool is not green but i have had that happen
Next time do the test properly and use one brand the whole time then let the pool get dirty again and then use the other brand for the exact same amount of time as you did the first brand to see if the brand is what's different you can't clean the pool 90% then put a name brand product in and say it helped more than all the rest
I seen a video that explained why the Mr Clean sponge is better than all the others. It’s supposedly due to the chemicals in the Mr Clean one vs the others.
You just made me watch a video about a pool and I don’t even own one or like swinging good job
lol...Thanks for watching
Lmao
Can I ask what it is you don’t like about swimming? I find that the oddest thing. It’s like hearing you don’t like “fun” to me.
@@stephaniesanchez7321 he said swinging not swinging 🤔
To make it work faster, put two sponges side by side to block of more of the skimmer basket forcing more water to be forced through the sponges. Otherwise you’re bypassing a lot of water past the sponge.
Thanks for the added tip
You shouldn’t do any of this….not on sponge, not two sponges or any sponge. Do you want your pump to default?
An absolute way to keep your pool clean is actually swim and use the pool..to keep a pool clean with little chemical use through the season is use your pool..Pools that are not used much will cost you a fortune to keep it clear...Need to stir up the pool by swimming in it at least 3 times a week
Thanks for watching
It only cleared up because you filtered the pool for 24hrs. Most pools don’t filter enough hours and that’s why they’re cloudy. A little eraser pad didn’t do anything, your filter did the work.
how to get oily film on top of pool
And a basket sock
Use a skimmer sock, they work great but you have to clean it everyday. It will catch all small particles. Definitely will work much better than a sponge.
Will a tube sock work 🤣
I use those for years., get them at Loews., buy at least 2 so you have a back up., they actually catch a lot., I use to use pantyhose until I found these about 8 years ago.
They use to sell them in a 2 pack.
I use those on my pool devil. I couldn't believe how cheap Amazon had them.
I use cheap hair nets for the skimmer to make it easy to clean.
The pool sock was the only thing that stopped my pipes getting clogged with pine needles. Nylons also work just as well.
Great review. Honest and to the point.

I cut a strip 1’x2’ of an old bath towel and crammed it in my pump basket. 2 hours later I checked it,and I was impressed. Swapped the towel out with another strip. I think it’s gonna work better than I expected

You needed to vacuum the bottom of the pool, the sponge works on the water but not on the sediment on the bottom. Do both and you will see a big difference.
Thanks for a good review. Very interesting. I'll have to try that

Thanks
👍
Any eraser sponge from from whatever five and dime will work
Thank you so much for this!
Thanks for watching
Did it work? I just put mine in
after all these sponges, I can still see the same crud and algae in the pool since the beginning of this video.
This video was more of a demonstration.
Very good idea. Thanks man.

Yup
If you take care of ur pool you wont have to add none of these just chlorine, muriatic acid to balance the ph level and if it does
get ugly shock it one pound bag for every 10,000 gallons
shared this with friend and no can do, her pool turned green, so for her, mr clean turned green
She needs to shock the pool to kill the algae
rinse that sponge out and reuse it... It worked great for the "rust" in my pool water but it took days and I packed the skimmer with several sponges at a time sponges.
Thanks for watching
Wonder if i can put one in a smaller filter for a smaller pool?😕
Did u scrub the pools before u put the sponge in??
It WORKS
I LIKE PEOPLE THAT TEST THEORY'S BUT SHOULD USE ONLY ONE BRAND FIRST, THEN AFTER THE POOL GETS GREEN USE ANOTHER BRAND TO GET TRUE EFFECTIVNESS
Thanks for watching
Algee is alive and it loves sponges rather than free floating
I think it works even better if you take 2 mrclean things cut them so it fits perfect in the filter then let it run for 2 days

Just keep one sponge all the time just change it often

Has anybody ever tried just a normal sponge cut to fit the skimmer can?
A pool blanket works very well.
They do work well I have one. They help to keep they chlorine from evaporating too.
I think it would work better it you have bubbles moving the skimmer around
Hello the chemicals in my pool are just sitting in the bottom. I have shocked the pool and still cloudy. Help
This works but it not a end all to cleaning your pool. It works together with the filter. Also you can reuse them. Just blast them with the hose, squeeze once or twice and re use. You don’t want to squeeze them excessively as it brakes down the micro pores in the sponge.

Daily vacuuming of pool walls and floors and balancing chemicals will keep your pool sparkling.

Why would anybody waste their valuable time cleaning their pool when they could just do this?
You can rinse them off periodically and help them along
Can you tell who manufactured your pool? I like the way it looks.
It is a very old Namco pool. It's probably 30 years old...built like a tank...lol
Cool! Thank you!
Is the sponge collecting the algae or is algae growing on it? Is it the sponge or the chemicals in the sponge that killed the algae? Why would a sponge collect algae better than a DE filter with more surface area? I do use these sponges to scrub the dirt ring that appears at the water line and it does a great job of that. As for the algae, I'll use an algaecide.
The minute chemicals in sponge compared to water volume does little or nothing. Shock water (high dose chlorine) filter dead algae out w filter.... (sand or membrane) sand filter best as u can backwash all dirty water out...replace w new w regular dose chlorine.
We use a skimmer sock on our skimmer basket and perfect weekly from leslies
Who else is just watching pool cleaning vids to tide them over until school is out also who else's teacher puts EVERY SINGLE assignment as "No due date" on google classroom
Thanks for watching
I used them. Worked great
Thanks for watching
Cloudy pool = lack of free chlorine and/or filtration
there a many reasons for cloudy water
Baking soda works put in cup of water then pore into pool
I used this as well..works great. I usually buy the big bag of it in the pool section at Walmart
I need to try this. Mine has a shat ton of pollen in it “mostly on the top” so I think this would work.
lol...Thanks for watching
Use a skimmer net and skim the pollen off the top of the pool.
I guess I will try the bypass. I just put it in the skimmer and it did absolutely nothing for my 15,000 gallon pool.
Best way to get rid of algae is to shock the pool and kill it. Then vacuum the pool once it turns white and it's dead. Hope this helps you out.
Honestly, our problem isn't so much algae as it is dirt. Our pool sits at the bottom of a terraced hill that washes dirt in when we get a bad storm - at least this is what we think happens. It is brown and a little greenish. I use flocculant to sink the dirt and vacuum it to waste before killing what little algae there is.
Stuff 2 in the basket. make a filter
Will the hack still work if you put the sponge directly to the pool
No it has to be in the skimmer location
Awesome Tip! 👍

So do u put the sponge in with the pool filter????
Yes,
I tried it but it didn't work
Studies with workers breathing borax showed no long-term respiratory effects. However, long-term ingestion of boric acid has resulted in vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pain. This is often followed by headaches, fever, tremors, twitching, a lack of energy, and weakness.
Look up ingredients on magic easer
Oh if you live in California don't eat the magic eraser...Bwaaaa ha ha
patty godines have you ever SMELLED a shocked pool!? It’ll burn YOUR EYBALLS AND MAKE YOUR CHEST HURT ..
Hello ... Where can we buy this product in malaysia .. Any shop selling in Malaysia
Not sure if it is available where you live. Maybe check Amazon.
what if your pool doesnt have one of those things on the side
• Anonymous • Get one
Maybe put it where the filter goes...
You dont need a skimmer lol yall are all stupid for spending money go to a class and save Ur money on these ridiculous ideas lol I'm a third generation pool builder and cleaner lol , stupid people
Frank Gonzales r/iamverysmart
@@frankdatank2529 people aren't stupid just haven't had the experience that a 3rd generation pool builder has had. I could say the same about you. I'm a cosmetologists. That's a hair stylist incase you didn't know. Now when covering 75% grey on a level 6 virgin client what volume developer should be used and at what processing time. Oh you don't know? How stupid go take a class. Get my point?
It worked for me. My first sponge looked like your 2nd one. I used Mr clean original. Pool looks clear. Can’t believe it.?? My pool is 98* It helped lots. It’s funny don’t want to believe it but hey it worked.
The pool guy took it out & put it on the table. He comes on Tuesday so I’ll take it out Monday night and put it bk in Wednesday. Lol. I’ll have to tell him about this.
I know it's been a while, but, first, thanks for posting this video, we bought a house a yr an a half ago w an in ground pool, were having a hard time this yr getting it clear, do you think this would work on ours? We changed the sand cause we're not sure how old it was, the house was empty for 7 yrs before we bought it..
If it's green you may have to shock it to kill the algae. If you did shock it and it's cloudy sometimes the dead algae is too small and passes through the filter. If this is happening you may want to flock the pool, you can buy it at the pool store. It will sink the algae to the bottom of the pool and then you can vacuum it out.
Here is a video that I did that shows you how to flock the pool ua-cam.com/video/zKb9SUy2HBc/v-deo.html
I think one sponge is not enough. Too much water was passing around the sponge. I think it would be quicker results if you cover the whole area to force water through the sponge.
Those pads do have some chemicals added to them.
still need chems
Wish I had known this trick when I had a hot tub 😶
Thanks for watching.
Just throw in a $3 bag of pool shock ... done.
Yeah...I agree..lol
I would have used two sponges, so that all the water has to go thru them, and not escape around the single sponge.
Thanks for watching.
wonder if a regular sponge would work
Not sure
They work. Period.
Use 24 hour intervals instead of 12 hours.
Thanks for watching
Why would you use a generic sponge?
We been doing this for years. You need to use more 1 if your pool is bigger the 5,000 we use 3 for our 10,000 pool change them once a week
Do you have an above ground or inground pool? Also, do you keep one in all the time or just if it starts to cloud up with algae?
Can you reuse the scrubber? After rinsing?
Wow yall need help lol
I have a in ground pool and its had water for 15 years and never has it got green same water since 2005 GOSPURSGO
@@frankdatank2529 I dont recall asking for your condsending answers. An above ground pool would need to be stirred up….let your kids swim for a bit and it will help.
Would you like some free advertising with that ?
running your filter for that long by itself wood clear your pool. Real test is to use no sponges and get results, next time use sponges and my opinion is there will be no noticeable difference.
Thanks for watching
Would have worked better if you vacuum it first., you have a lot of stuff in bottom of pool
I know right they have one for cheap on amazon for 54.99 buddy number one seller
No ur supposed to put it in the filter
Nope- in the skimmer
I was hoping it would work, but you could see from that third try it was definitely not helping.
Shock works better
I didn’t see that at all.It did work the water cleared up.Each sponge was clearer because the algae was being removed.I tried it in my pool for the same situation and I was amazed how clear the water became. And fast! I don’t think it’s the end to anything else just another tool in the toolbox.
Doesn't work tried three magic erasers.
Tried it last night and it worked amazingly! My pool was cloudy blue and you couldn’t see the bottom.Dropped one magic eraser in the skimmer basket and waited 24 hours. Now it is perfectly crystal clear!!! I honestly am shocked how well it worked. And yes I have cleaned the shit out of my pool and tried everything the so called experts have preached.Again it wasn’t nasty and green but definitely a hazy blue. The magic eraser was my final step for that perfect crystal water you hope for.
Thanks for watching
You just ran your pool threw a filter for almost 2 days your pool should be cleaner
Do you know if there is anything that's in the spong that would hurt fish? I have a koi pond
Jeeze...I'm not sure
You would kill your fish
It’s not edible, I wouldn’t suggest it.
My grandpa won’t do it he says the soap feeds the alegre he is so mad right now he just won’t take suggestions
The sponge doesn't have soap in it.
Just sneak it in at night
I don't have a skimmer I only have a pump and filter
Thanks for watching. Don't forget to sub the channel to receive all of our latest uploads.
I was wondering if you could put it in the filter middle? Since i dont have a skimmer either.
Lol he has no clue..... at a lot of things.
Use the outlet to stir it up
Get an ionizer.
Can you use 2 of them at the same time
You may be able to
Okay everybody the sponges are full of crap. Chlorinate, PH Levels, calcium and run your pool 8-12 hours everyday. The reason the pool cleared up is because he ran the shit out of it.
WHY DON'T YOU CUT IT TO FIT THE HOLE?!?!
🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Now I have to go try it myself 😃
Thanks for watching
red dead redemption 2
IT WORKS! I put it in the basket next to the pump. 48 hours later, Crystal clear. No B.S. Mine did not change color. Been in a month now. Still C.C. Used Mr. Clean.
Thanks for watching
Yeah adding 6square inches of surface area to your filtration system isn't going to make a difference. Chlorine and good functional filter and some real pool clarifier your best bet.
Thanks for watching. Don't forget to sub the channel to receive all of our latest uploads.
Actually it made a big difference for me in just one day!
It's just the chlorine reacting with the sponge it's not doing anything think they have chemicals already in sponge
Thanks for watching
You know what else works? An actual good filter, chemical balancing, and vacuuming that bottom. This magic erase sponge is literally just a micro pool filter. Waste of money.
Yes, You are correct. Keeping the pool clean and well maintained is the best method for keeping your water clean.
You sound like one of those pool cleaning services that's about to go out of business. 😂
Does not work. Even when a pool is somewhat clean, it turns the sponge green but does not make the water any cleaner.
Kind of impossible for the sponge to turn green without removing green from the pool. You probably aren't getting enough circulation.
@@kobeandgary the algea needs a rough surface to anchor it's roots to , thats why we're supposed to brush the sides and bottom to remove the starting root of the algea . all the sponge is doing is giving the algea spores an easy place to anchor themselves to. I doubt this is a real solution to keeping a pool clean. Just brush your pool once a week and keep all the chemicals in check and problem solved. I use a "pool rx" the blue one to keep my pools algea down. Its about 50 bucks and lasts 6 months . pop one in your pumps skimmer basket and it's good to go. Much more effective for reducing algea. Other chemicals still need to be maintained though.
I did this for my koi pond...they all died.
opnwndo it’s your fault.
It’s for pools, not aquariums or ponds with fish.

Hello did you use any cleaning product besides that sponge? Can that sponge alone clean the whole pool that is 8x bigger than your pool?
We sprinkle a little bit of diatomaceous earth in the skimmer so it can Polish the water as it sticks to the filter. Then all you need to do is clean the filter.
Diatomacheous earth. Wonder compond. Fixes alot. Very safe for human consumption
Stupid again ur filter has sand lol
Get some blue clarifier its amazing crystals clear water omg get it now
