Even i would rather do XC or gravel than CX, i'd also rather just do road biking than CX. i don't want to be lifting and carrying my bike while biking even if it is lightweight. Different strokes for different folks.
I reckon a redemption race may have to be on the cards, CX is a weird beast, I get it and at the same time I don’t. That looks about the "pleasure" of CX. Close to 90-100 HR for nearly an hour. Where else do you get that quality of effort for an hour, with the constant risk of falling/sliding off.
Related to your power, how much do you weight? 390W NP is a superb effort! Also congrats to not being lapped given it was your first race and you've partly done it on flat tire! What was your final result?
I've done a few CX races and found as an MTBer I'd be as fast as anyone through the tricky bits, but as soon as the course opened up or went up hill the roadies would just blast off due to their superior fitness.
Since the appearance of MTBs, most of us have thought "but I bet an MTB would be faster in a CX race", then we went and tried it, and for most of us, on almost all courses, it simply isn't, whether it is just picking up so much more mud, or not being able to cut through to some grip with those overwide tyres, or just losing out in gearing and windage on the faster stretches.
And there is also the impassable sections in many courses - like stairs and step-climbs. Much easier (and lighter) to carry a proper 'cross bike uphill than most light XC bikes. It really is horses for courses - a CX bike can't really do an MTB course efficiently. I often ride trails on a 'cross bike, even with bigger tires, and you just have to be so careful choosing your line.
I ride light singletrack here on my CX bike with 700c/42mm tires or sometimes 650b/2.1" tires, but still have to be careful about picking my lines even then. That said it is fun, it makes trails that would be boring on a MTB if you have some skill more fun.
@@sepg5084 It would depend on the "kind" of gravel bike and the actual course and race. It is all a tradeoff when it comes to CX. Some of the twisty technical stuff, a long / slack gravel bike that would be great for bombing down a hill on would not be as good at handling as a more road bike like gravel bike / CX bike, as you would potentially "understeer" into the barrier/ropes if you tried to hold as much speed as someone might on a CX bike. Sometimes there are really off camber areas with turns that on a CX bike you could still pedal through but on a more road bike like gravel bike with a better ability to handle that twisty stuff, you could clip a pedal and wreck if you tried to do that, because the main difference between those more road bike like gravel bikes and a CX bike tends to be a lower BB. Also, although you could ride fat tires at local fun races, you couldn't in competitive ones that actually follow the tire width rules.
I have a friend who's a roadie and, naturally, we taunt each other about our chosen disciplines. However, we both agree that CX is insane. Fun to watch, but no desire to participate. Loved the vid. Your pain is our entertainment gain.
A local cyclocross race in the mid 80s was what got me into MTB. There was a race with these newfangled bikes with „fat“ tires and straight bars and they were able to ride up every climb where the CXers had to push. I was sold immediately.
I loved how excited Anna was at the start and she blasted through the field like it was nothing at all. It was kind of like a Jack Russell wanting to go to a dog park to play kind of excited! What a legend! Rich bringing the pain with a puncture again. He just loves punishment.
This is my favourite Ana video. She showed some real personality, especially the low key wanting to crush everyone part. I feel that. I want to see Ana do more racing.
The great thing about local CX races is that you can do it on an XC bike too (preferably on a hardtail though). If the CX course has alot of climbs that require dismounting and shouldering the bike then a skinsuit is better than bibs and a top.
This was fantastic. You definitely need another go at it with proper tire pressure, Richard. Anna killed it. Good on her! Both of you rode like beasts. I just ended my cross season in the northeast US with an extremely muddy race this past Saturday. I already miss it. Definitely bring more of this content! 😃
Would like to see Rich ride the same course again on a XC hardtail and his XC full sus for lap time comparisons. He did not look like he was enjoying himself much…
Good effort Anna was really upbeat for the event and done really well... rich on the other hand didn't look happy from start to finish 🤣😂. But I'd be the same on a gravel bike 🙂
I race CX in the winter to keep motivated when the weather turns. Nothing like feeling as though your heart is going to explode (almost 40, and my average heart rate for a CX race is 190, max heart rate is 203 during the races) and your longs burning. Each course is its own thing, some catering more to roadies, some towards mtb. All in good fun! Also good to see Rich does a proper mount without the stutter step!
I’ve raced some cx races in the AM on a cross bike then again in the PM on a fat bike. Not a proper xc bike for sure, but was still faster on the cx rig. Depends a lot on the course but generally the time savings on the technical bits will be lost and then some on the flat bits or when forced to carry. Looked like a brutal course! Proper conditions, good work!
Anna looks like she’s done this before! It’s a lot of fun everyone should try it. It’s a very accessible form of racing. In the USA too, you can turn up on a mountain bike, that’s ok for lower categories.
I love CX racing - although not done many races. As an mrber your advantage is on the more technical courses, but the roadies will smash you on the flat grassy bits. The big problem is with mechanicals - a puncture can ruin your whole day. That and it really trashes your bike!
You could see on the climbs. One rider in practice was spinning out and Rich just blew past him. Then they had a group walking up the mud and Rich chooses a different line with more grip to get past them. They knew that line choice would give them an advantage while admitting that the roadies would fly by them on the straights.
What a fun video to watch!! Anna did AMAZING!!! Rich was making it look easy until his tire blew...would have loved to seen his placement had his tire held!!
How about Anna and Rich taking Si around the Three Peaks race next year. Si may say he wouldn't want to do it. But I recon he would if there's a race to be had with GMBN.
