WHY I DID NOT STOP AND LET AIR OUT?? More guys asking the same question so I’m copy pasting some of the answer: I never know beforehand how much loose sand there is. So if there is one dry section in the beginning I don’t want to stop immediately to adjust because i will lose the group instantly. By the time you realize it maybe worth it you’re so far in the race… it may not be worth it anymore Besides that, the difficult thing is, when you do that you have no way to measure what you’re doing and you risk to let out too much. You will not find out until you are riding again and the tires roll off in the corners 🤪 Also it will cost time, so you wouldn’t want to do it on the key moments where the difference is made and the lead group is established. But, yes it’s definitely an option and could work out if you are lucky If it’s not a race with a group but an individual TT or just a casual ride you can stop straight away and will be more efficient and make up the time. But in a race with a group, the benifit from riding with the group is often so big, you don’t want to lose that by stopping… same reason we don’t stop at the feed stations or stop to piss! For gravel, I ride with no valve caps so I can tap them to let out air if I realize they are too high for the conditions. Takes like 10 seconds and makes the rest of the ride faster and safer. Do it all the time and works great. Usually just takes the front tire.

brilliant Jasper great footage and commentary. my thoughts are a hard trail mtb with 29/2.35 tyres would have required less effort through the terrain. the big differences I've noticed when riding aggressive mtb vs gravel bike are handle bar leverage (ability to fully commit to cornering), braking control and rapid gear selection. front suspension means less energy used. gravel bike is a compromise. weight is key my hard tail mtb is 9.5kg, my gravel bike the same. bar leverage a big factor for handling and allows more body dynamic on bike. great race you had fun dude.
I am curious about the gearing ratios on the MTBs as well as the general handlebar width, which is a little personal of course but with the trend to have super wide bars does it still make sense in a race situation like this. These guys are all ripping along on MTB s and gravel bikes, so aside from really great condition, how is their gear selection and bar size different than a traditional hard tail/cross country set up?
@@B.Mitchell not gear ratios, the mtb gear selection is a trigger system up on the bars compared to drop bars which have the levers on the drops, mtbs are designed for faster terrain changes so your hands are right at the triggers, where drop bars, not as accessible under fire - long movement for gear change. Made a similar race on fatbikes with a friend, we lost to a light guy on a gravelbike, but all the MTBs were way behind. With these kind of speeds, yes the wheels are not aero, but they just hover over these small bumps and sand, without causing any disturbance or extra attention to the surface under you. Correct pressure is the key ;)
I think its funny how bikes have come full circle. A gravel bike is so much closer to the early mountain bikes from the 80s than a modern mountain bike is to their ancestors.
Yep it’s crazy. Remember the time cell phones had to be as small as possible? Now everyone is walking around with 8” screen iPhones which are basically computers haha.
Awesome video. You did a great job to come fourth. Definitely seems like the gravel bike was the right choice. Yes you should have had softer tires, but next time you might find the ground a little firmer and your tires would have been perfect.
Just a friendly dig, but I think "A mountain bike race in the Netherlands" just sounds kind of funny 😇PS. Loving the lefty fork; I don't race, but I still regularly ride a lefty from 2001. Awesome bit of engineering.
i have a suggestion to make: You should be able to measure slip by having a sensor in the front and one in the back. slip is where you lose all that power on lose ground. so you should be able to measure try out a tire on the lowest pressure or get a wider tire. my guess is that you can improve quite a lot by going to the lowest pressure on the narrow tire.
I have a monstercrosser (beach bike) like your friend. Very competent in soft conditions. My tyre pressures go down to 20 psi (offroad) on the big 2.35 G One tyres and they are still fast. Will work in mud too just because of contact patch although if its been weeks of rain i will swap wheels to MTB specific tyres. Its not as fast as a road bike but its my go to ride if i dont know where or what conditions ill be riding. I do have suspension forks but never felt the need to get tempted into more techical stuff on it...I'm 58 after all and MTBs are built for that. Great video.

Mountainbike race in Holland??? LOL! You did well picking a gravel bike. Even my brain would have figured that one out, as there are no mountains there. A race here in Norwegian mountains would be something else for sure.
I find it fascinating that people will judge the worthyness of a mountainbike race by how big the mountains are….. It depends on how you interpret “mountain bike race”. To me it’s a race done on a mountain bike. Not a race with a bike on mountains …. Just my opinion 😜
@38:20 I think its all 3 ;) hahah Bike + Rider + Tyres. But even though you didn't have all 3 at the peak performance i still think you did really well
Nice video and great job, Jasper. Yes, I think stick w the gravel, get a little wider tires, and lower the pressure, can you swap in a suspension stem like the Redshift?
What a fantastic ride! this video showed me just how fast can flat bars be, I just started riding a road bike after riding flat bars my whole life and still don't feel at home. maybe something like the Diverge Expert Evo wold be nice.
bloody amazing ride! I think your fitness is not far off, not sure what your tyre width was, but I'd imagine a fast rolling 45 or 50c will be about perfect. The soft sand looked like it really sapped your energy! Awesome vid!
Interesting and well made Video! But how much pressure actually did you have in your tires? (of course we need width and total weight approx. as well pls), and if you could do the same again how much pressure would you apply ? Of course you had an advantage on the light gravel and on the roads as it was and would have lost some of that with less pressure ...........
Impressive riding, especially on the single track ! I would have chosen an XC bike, since the terrain where you could take advantage of the aero-position on the gravel bike was not that great overall. Over time, your upper body will fatigue much more riding really rough sections on the gravel bike. I do a lot of testing between gravel bike and XC bike, and results are often surprisingly close.

@@SyLens1 ja precies die boeren velden waren echt zwaar man!
Awesome footage!! It felt like participating and i could see how hard you were pushing it! Congratulations for the fourth place! 🎉 I ride road bike and am currently looking for a xc mountain bike... this gives me a lot of motivation! Maybe even to participate in a race next year. I will be far from fourth place but that looks like hell of fun anyways!!
Awesome man! I’ve got some more Mtb content too. For sure check my cape epic documentary!🤙🏻
@@jasperverkuijl i found that after watching this video. Will definitely watch it! 👍🏼
My fastest tyres in sand are 2.6"
I think its funny how bikes have come full circle.
I like when you tried a bunny hop at the falling tree 🙂 ... this show that you are strong for able to keep up with the XCs.
Love your race vids! Looking forward to the crits again!
I was recently convinced into buying one of those winspace gravel bikes, turns out being the BEST purchase I have had, cannot be happier!
Awesome mate!
Awesome video. You did a great job to come fourth. Definitely seems like the gravel bike was the right choice. Yes you should have had softer tires, but next time you might find the ground a little firmer and your tires would have been perfect.
Recently found your channel and it’s so well done! One of my favorites! Now to go see the rest of your videos 😊
Thank you!
Great footage, great commentary. Impressive effort and I think you should be proud of the result!
Thanks!
Mee of eraf!
Wow i see lots more racing videos. Love it, i remember you doing poll, glad to see these again
Awesome video.
I don't know why I ended up here, but here I am.
You did great.
Yoooo welcome 🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing! The level is super hi, as you mentioned: full gas from the beginning.
I get exhausted just watching 😅!
Great content!
Definitely not a mountain bike race by our standards in the French South Eastern Alps😊
And yes tire pressure makes all the difference.
It’s not a mountain race, but still had single tracks that are faster in a mountainbike. So it’s a mountainbike race.
Just a friendly dig, but I think "A mountain bike race in the Netherlands" just sounds kind of funny 😇PS.
Loving the lefty fork; I don't race, but I still regularly ride a lefty from 2001. Awesome bit of engineering.
That’s how we do in NL!
i have a suggestion to make:
You should be able to measure slip by having a sensor in the front and one in the back. slip is where you lose all that power on lose ground. so you should be able to measure try out a tire on the lowest pressure or get a wider tire. my guess is that you can improve quite a lot by going to the lowest pressure on the narrow tire.
I have a slip sensor! It’s my brain 👍🏻
I just ordered a gravel bike and now i learn about beach bikes. Those sounds like a better option to complement my roadbike with 28mm. Road
There are “gravel” bikes nowadays that would fit 2,2” tires
That was a bloody messy race!! Good effort klasbak!
💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks!
Watching this, i know with the Rondo Bogan i choose just the right rig for a world cycling trip :) Amazing footage!!
Sounds like a perfect bike for this race
Great race coverage Jasper. Well done!
The geometry and the drop bars truly game you an advantage at those speeds.
But I’m hardly in the drops 😅
I did wonder why you didn't stop and let the air out, but superb watching! Well done!
I’ve put some info in the top comment
Race Against The Machine 😋
Oh i don't race but enjoy the nature with all kinds of bikes 😋
A bientôt la french team 😘
Congratulations Jasper 🏆 so rad …awesome loving it video as always pack with so much action from the start. Dang your killing it with them technical single route track and you still able to catch up and get back with the group and finish fourth place that’s some really solid ride bro🙌👍👊
Excellent video. 14:40 looked like the steepest bit of the race!
Awesome! Excellent result and fantastic video. Thanks. 👍
@38:20
I think its all 3 ;) hahah Bike + Rider + Tyres.
But even though you didn't have all 3 at the peak performance i still think you did really well
Nice video and great job, Jasper. Yes, I think stick w the gravel, get a little wider tires, and lower the pressure, can you swap in a suspension stem like the Redshift?
Probably could do that yes.
I just love the mountains, so majestic.
Me too!
Gravel race??!! They got you pedaling through corn fields lol. Awesome video you are a phenomenal rider. I'd in the back taking my time
My heart rate is going into the red just watching this Lolz. Great job, awesome video.
What a fantastic ride! this video showed me just how fast can flat bars be, I just started riding a road bike after riding flat bars my whole life and still don't feel at home. maybe something like the Diverge Expert Evo wold be nice.
Love these "MTB" races 👍🏻👏🏻
Gas!
Nicely done 👍🏼
Amazing video with country music pretty spicy
Great job mate 🤙🏼
23:43 anybody any ideas what is this CO2 canister holder on a saddle?
Top video weer.
9.8K subscribers to go, lets go
Yep, getting closer!
bloody amazing ride! I think your fitness is not far off, not sure what your tyre width was, but I'd imagine a fast rolling 45 or 50c will be about perfect. The soft sand looked like it really sapped your energy! Awesome vid!
Pretty smooth terrain mountain bike race. I wouldn't say this is a reasonable example of true MTB racing.
I never said that haha. But it’s still a Mtb race
Awesome and motiviatin Video like always!! Tanks Jasper!!
at 30:40 i et of my chair as i thought you mentioned Tom Boonen. AHHAHAHAHAHAHA
Nice footage, enjoyed it a lot! Dutch people are very funny - mountain bike race in north of Netherlands 🤣it's hilarious 😆
Congrats on the 4th place! Nice job and great racing!
Thanks!
In the UK, we have gravel races with steeper/higher hills!
But good to watch all the same!
In the UK, there is steeper and higher hills to begin with so sure haha
the word mountain and netherlands together is strange hahaha
It really happens!!🤓
You surely raced to win, enjoyed youre video very much👏👏👏
Thank you 😀
AWESOME video! watched the whole thing :D
Damn, jolly good run, I'm fired up to try a 50 km run for myself after watching your run,
Hahaha
Awesome video Jasper and awesome ride!
I think you did great. I never heard of a beach bike with drop bars, I have to look it up.
It’s a Dutch/Belgium invention! Koga even made a beach specific frame a while ago.
Still,, you done very well.. Congratulations!! I think its the bike..
fr 🇵🇭💪🏻🤘🏻
Interesting and well made Video!
But how much pressure actually did you have in your tires? (of course we need width and total weight approx. as well pls), and if you could do the same again how much pressure would you apply ? Of course you had an advantage on the light gravel and on the roads as it was and would have lost some of that with less pressure ...........
I can’t remember the actual pressure. But 60mm tires with 15psi would’ve worked
Brilliant Jasper GREAT JOB 👏 RIGHT BIKE WRONG PRESSURES FOR SURE 😊
You gotta use the Silca tire pressure chart. You tooo big chances; love watching you race
great video dude..lots of fun!!
Thanks!
So what have you tested exactly? I’m interested in whatever results you have 💪🏻
