Ask Professor Dave #2: Are You A Real Professor?

  • I get some variation of this question all the time. What's my degree in, where did I study, where did I teach, do I still teach, and so forth. I thought I would answer all of these types of questions all at once by telling you about everything I've been up to since college! You're probably getting to know me a little better than you wanted to, but tough tomatoes, we're friends now.

@@ananthr1583 You'll find that people with very high IQ are usually good at a number of things. Science/math people usually excel at music, one way or another. It may reflect their mental structures, and their naturally inquisitive nature leads them a lot further down the road than we mere mortals. They also require a LOT less formal education to achieve superior levels of competence in whatever takes their fancy. You don't need a PhD to excel. Witness the number of hackers who never saw the inside of a computing classroom. Dave certainly doesn't need one to enable him to construct a strong portfolio of lessons in chemistry, inter alia. He certainly doesn't need to feel apologetic for assuming the title of professor.

Don't worry about degrees bro. Legends don't need any such degree for reputation or value. They earn value through their legendary work. You are a legend bro. And your work is legendary(which you are doing in youtube). Many people are getting such degrees, but many people are not becoming Professor Dave. You are benefiting SO MANY students around the world(myself included) with your digi classes with your easy way of explaining things. You are spreading knowledge, spreading it in a simple and easy manner. And knowledge should be always spreaded like this.. simple and easy, for a proper world. Yes, the world is not yet proper with the educational system. Education is knowledge. And if knowledge is fun to learn, only then we can learn it. It cannot be learnt if it is presented boringly and scarily. So you are definitely doing good work for the world. That is what is most important. Just keep up your good work sir. Remember, your work is not just good, it is IMPORTANT. And i will try to donate you in future to help you more.

in germany, _"Professor"_ is some kind of protected, for teachers at universities, but as i remember from holidays in italy (and Dave's family is from italy) and as google translate confirms, the italian _"professore"_ simply translates to _"teacher"_ (not necessarily at a university). thus it should be completely ok to use this as some kind of "stage name" if he once tought at a university and now teaches on youtube.
in contrast to this (at least in germany) a doctor has finished his university studies (of any scientific, or also non scientific branch like philosophy) at an approved university and also finished a thesis, which earns the title and then even becomes kind of part of the legal name. thus i personally take "Dr med" in front of a surname (or any other "Dr xxx", in contrast to an unspecified "Dr" or even "Doc", especially when the surname is eg Morris, or it is an actor in a tv commercial) much more serious.
in everyday language (in germany), "Doktor" (instead of the correct term for the profession, "Arzt") is often used to address medical practitioners no matter whether they have earned the title "Dr med", and there are many of them who are no doctor, but they often are considered superior since their knowledge is more recent than that of those who paused studying to write a thesis on some very specific and limited (often obscure) subject for some year(s) before starting to practise on people what they learned years before.

So, you get cancer. Does the MD or DO degree matter now?
The US is going downhill fast because 1. We don't think the various degrees mean anything, and 2. Because of this attitude, the meaning of degrees like MD, Ph.D. are in fact declining because of lowered standards. Be careful of what you want, you'll surely get it.
Dave is sharp. But, he's also hustling. He's found a way to make money. Be careful. Just because you couldn't follow what "many of the Ph.D Professors at universities." doesn't mean they didn't make sense or were actually good. It just means you couldn't follow it. We are turning education into a McDonald's franchise (actually, we've already done this). This is not good, and it's pretty clear that high quality upper level education is shifting back to Europe, possibly even in to China, which has never been a powerhouse of education because of their politics. Education is not a democracy, it isn't based upon some sort of vote, or some sort of opinion vote. It never has been. Actually, a big reason for the success in the US of higher education is because our model was no democratic. Even Dave spends a lot of time "debunking" people and ideas that have popped up because of the McDonaldization of education.
Again, be careful of what you want, you will surely get it.

True. But, the Ph.D's DO understand it better. Try Veritasium. It beats the hell out of Dave for two reasons. 1. The coverage of a topic is much better because the guy actually understands it at a high level, has actually done and published his own unique research (that's how he got the Ph.D.) and 2. He doesn't elevate fools like flat earthers and others. Oh, I forgot a third one...3. Veritasium never gets personal and calls other fools or MUCH more vulger things. Dave gets clicks because of the vulgarity, which increases his income, but it demeans both himself and the knowledge that he does have. Veritasium NEVER does any of these 3, and it is the difference between a ph.d and a not ph.d.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I clicked on this video, but a moving life story about continuing to try explaining science to people through different mediums despite multiple setbacks is not it. I am so glad you've decided to create this channel, and I could not give a shit whether you're technically a "professor" yet.
My mother dropped out of her PhD program with only her dissertation left to complete because she decided not to become a professor, but she has been a great teacher for me, my siblings, and all our friends growing up. Being a great teacher has nothing to do with your degrees, credentials, or place of work, and everything to do with YOU. And you, sir, are a great teacher.
