To be fair, tap water can be pretty bad depending on where you are. In some places in the US, it's undrinkable due to pollution (Flint, MI is a great example, where it's contaminated with enough heavy metals to make it poisonous). In other places it just tastes bad. So avoiding tap water in some places is valid. But yeah, that doesn't excuse pseudoscience and snake oil.

14:00 The dose makes the poison is one of my favourite lines.
As someone who uses cannabis medically, and hates people who think it is a panacea that can do no harm, I like to educate people that you can theoretically overdose on weed, you would just need to smoke about 2000 joints in a minute.
At that point, they usually say "see, its harmless" and then I hit them with the following fact. It would take twice as many cigarettes to overdose on nicotine, but if you injected the nicotine from just 1 pack of cigarettes directly into your vein, you would be dead.
In addition to dose, the method and duration of delivery is also very important.

The upshot was to determine the perceived impact of known trichloroethylene plumes in the ground around the Phoenix metro area. We were asked (among other things) where we got out drinking water. Most bought it 5 gallons at a time from the coin-op dispensers around town; others had water treatment systems at home. I was the only one in the group who drank the iron-rich tap water.

A decade or so ago, during a point in my life that I was vulnerable to conspiratorial indoctrination, I watched an anti-water fluoridation "documentary" that at the time I thought had some compelling points. Since then I've learned to better spot nonsense and pseudoscience, and I've often assumed that all of those "compelling points" were probably half-truths, misrepresentations, or outright lies. This video is wrong or misguided on many points. If you want to hear a legitimate counter argument and math to back it up, then continue reading.
There was no mention in this video that the fluoride added to water is not sodium fluoride but hexafluorosilicic acid and sodium silicofluoride which is very toxic and is a byproduct of the phosphorus mining industry. This stuff is very toxic and is not the same as naturally occurring sodium fluoride which is safe in very minute amounts.
He also doesn’t mention how sodium fluoride was the main active ingredient in rat poisons for many years. Look it up.
Recommend amount of toothpaste = 1 pea sized squirt. 1 pea is approximately 0.25cm cubed. There are 4000 pea sized amounts of toothpaste in a liter. 1500mg/liter fluoride toothpaste divided by 4000 = 0.375mg of fluoride per 1 pea sized amount of toothpaste.
The EPA’s max regulatory limit for fluoridated water is 4mg/Liter and the secondary limit is 2mg/L. These limits have known to be exceeded with limited action from regulatory authorities. The EPA allows cities to exceed the 2mg limit for up to 12 consecutive months before taking action. But for science, let’s just go with the HHS recommendation of 0.7mg/L. If someone drinks 2 liters of water a day, that is 1.4 mg of fluoride daily ingestion. Now think about athletes and people who work/live in hot climates that consume a gallon of water (3.78 Liters) a day. That would bring us 2.65 mg of Fluoride a day. This far exceeds the 0.375mg of fluoride in a pea sized squirt of toothpaste.
Now what if it is a hot climate and someone’s is drinking a gallon of 2, 3, or 4 mg/L fluoridated water? A fluoride concentration of 2 mg/L in drinking water would result in 7.56mg of daily fluoride consumption. That is 20x more fluoride consumed through water compared to the fluoride in a pea sized scoop of toothpaste!
This isn’t even factoring in that the fluoride we receive from municipal energy water supplies is NOT sodium fluoride but the chemicals listed above.
I will save writing out the calculations for acute toxicity via drinking water, which can and does happen, but the real problem is long term exposure.
These heavy metals bind to the calcium in our bones. What happens to our bones when we get older? The density goes down and large amounts of heavy metals may be released to flow through our blood and land in soft tissue. Alzheimer’s anyone?
Our bodies require many nutrients and minerals in very minute amounts that are found naturally occurring in underground water springs. If we are lacking a nutrient, we can simply supplement it into our diet. It is absurd to think the government cares so much about our teeth that they would medicate or supplement the water supplies with it, meanwhile, Americans are greatly lacking in many other nutrients and minerals that the government does not supplement our water with. Instead the government allows all kinds of crap into our food including hydrogenated oils which cause heart disease, one of the leading causes of death in America in the hundreds of thousands. “Cigarettes are good for you too!” they used to say. What makes more sense, the government is very concerned with our teeth, but not how much sugar (tooth decay) companies use in food. Or the government allowed a way for the phosphorous mining industry to rid itself of industrial waste instead of dumping heavy concentrations of it into streams which the EPA outlawed?
You tell me what is logical.
Many times throughout history, the science community has claimed to have it all figured out until one day a lone Wolf scientist figures out the establishments belief is wrong. This lone Wolf has been mocked at many times. Today is no different. We must question established views on science. It doesn’t mean there is a great conspiracy always but that simply large populations of people scientist have often been wrong. However, those in power should not be blindly trusted. Did you know America is one of the only countries who fluoridate their water?
      Question, question, and question again.

    • @Nathanh56

@Aditya Chavarkar it’s the fact it greatly contributes to heart disease, one of the leading causes of death in America, and yet the government doesn’t show that they care. But on the other hand they care so much about our teeth health to supplement our water supply.
There are many substances that simply have no place in food and the public is largely unaware of the health effects of hydrogenated oils. Nobody’s forcing McDonald’s down my throat but most people didn’t ask their cities to add fluoride to their water either.

In an 8-ounce glass of water, you would typically consume about 0.16 milligrams of fluoride.
The average amount of toothpaste used on a toothbrush is about the size of a pea, which contains approximately 0.25 milligrams of fluoride.
That's not much more, but I understand if you swallowed a liter of toothpaste it would be a different story. However, on a day-to-day basis I drink about 96 ounces of water and brush my teeth twice a day. So I get 1.92mg of flouride from water and .50mg from toothpaste... if i swallowed it all, but the common understanding is to spit and rinse!

Like, what if fluoride water makes people feel less energetic or have low thyroid hormone, but its a small enough effect to not be very noticeable in a study. all of the talk of preventing tooth decay made me feel bad for my teeth. I'm not really a consistent brusher so I had to stop for the video and go use my fluorinated toothpaste. Then I spit all of the foam out and washed down the minty taste with a gulp of my likely fluorinated tapwater.

      @curtra8288 9 місяців тому +2

In the studies ive read when they mention a "topical" application, they are referring to either toothpaste or gels applied by dentists. 50 to 90 percent of the fluoride you drink passes right by your teeth, gets digested, enters the bloodstream, then deposited in your bones and brain. Fluoride applied topically does seem to help with cavities, but drinking it does not really show any benefits. Even though it helps with cavities, most forms added to water are also slightly toxic, so there are some studies that point out that it might do more harm than good, especially when it interacts with other things you are exposed to, such as aluminum or heavy metals.

I personally have been a victim of these fluoride conspiracies myself. I stopped brushing my teeth with toothpaste when I was about 10 because I was worried about the impact on IQ, but apart from "saving my intelligence" I also saved myself from perfectly healthy teeth as I developed toothache and cavities for the first time, and my teeth never fully recovered, they still get sometimes achy even though I’m using normal toothpaste. Fluorosis can only occur during the development of the dentition. If you’re teeth have come in it’s irrelevant. As for the dose, off the top of my head I can’t remember but I know that it’s variable. Some children need more some need less. The 0.7ppm in water for instance was chosen because it hit the sweet spot of maximally reducing caries (decay) whilst minimally causing fluorosis.
      * found the graph I liked, it’s has the x axis of fluoride concentration and 2 y axis, 1 of DMFT(decay, missing, filled teeth) the other of the index of dental fluorosis. It seems that for some individuals fluorosis occurs at any conc, but this steadily increases with increased conc. hence why they keep water fluoridation to below 1mg/L.
