A 100-million year-old monotreme coined the "echidnapus", which shares platypus-and echidna-like characteristics, is one of three extinct species of egg-laying mammal unveiled by palaeontologists. Chief Scientist and Director of the Australian Museum Research Institute says that although the echidnapus is not a direct ancestor of modern monotremes, it gives palaeontologists an "important snapshot" on how the unique anatomies came to be today.
