yea 100% ecu. we went to the euro 6 emmision standard in september 2015 where many manufacturers had to adapt outgoing vehicles to meet euro 6 and yours being a euro 6 engine with a euro 5 ecu on it, cold start might be mapped completely diffrently hopefully 🤞
I am a mechanic working for Kia and also have a Ceed gt from 2016 .. and from end 2015 begin 2016 use the facelift engines without the coolant cap and so on also the they have the difference in wires to the spark coils the pre facelift model engines uses 2 wire coils and the facelift uses 3 wires .. if the ecu thats in the car uses the software Of the older engine its maybe a. Problem because the coils are different
You say the newest version ends in H but this one ends in G. I'm no Kia engine expert but I strongly suspect based on my years in the car parts industry that the G at the end means it's the last revision of the old engine and H, I, J etc will be revisions of the later engine (probably different because of Euro 6) If it went to Kia Nottingham with a hole in the block, they would've fitted a short engine ordered in by their parts department. Short engine is only a built up bottom end so cylinder head, turbo (if tested OK) and ancillaries from the old engine would've been transferred to the short engine before fitting. As it's mechanical parts only, ECU remapping wouldn't be necessary. Call the dealers service department and ask if they can read out the details on that job number. They won't be disclosing personal info so won't be breaching GDPR. Another thing before I forget, your Topdon Autel thing can write VIN numbers too so don't trust what you see there.
Part 2...I don't think a Kia dealer would bodge a pipe with a bolt though, they would've changed the bottle and pipe. Maybe this isn't it's first engine? I once had an A3 2.0 TFSI a long time ago that did this, the owners manual actually states that the engine will run rough for the first few minutes while the catalytic converter warms up. Being a 40 second thing with no codes, are you 100% sure it's not normal for these engines? If the answer to that is no, you need a proper auto electrician looking at this, Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics is the best on YT but he's in the USA. Best UK YT alternative I've seen is Milligan Auto Services but Ryan's in Glasgow so too far from the midlands. Anyway, an auto electrician that follows their methodology always solves the problem.
This is a GDI engine and as such, is a direct injection. It needs a walnut shell internal clean because it has carbon deposits. This will not show on the sensors. It also won't show in the injectors. It happens a lot in GDI engines. Mitsubishis are renown for it.
Have you considered that once you get to 80 - 100k cars very few people are going to be on fb market place swapping cars with random people? Just a thought
True it will be really hard. I'm also trying the same here, but not trading up, just buy a car repair it sell it. Then buy something more expensive and sell it for more profit. Till now it goes great. Started with 300€ now having 4k within just 5cars.

Could it be that misfire happens as long as your ECU is in open loop mode? After O2 sensor warms up, ECU changes to closed loop and it corrects the fuel mixture and car runs fine... So correct software for ECU would probably help, if this is the case.
That’s exactly what it’s doing mate, open loop cold start issue, soon as it warms up a little and switches over to closed loop (lambda feedback) it runs perfectly, well done you! WGS 🤙
Keep going with it persistence pays off in the end, you'll get to the bottom of the issue its a great series so far keep up the hard work. Forget the negativity.
I'd replace the coolant temperature switch, as I've found on some cars even without a fault code these can go wrong and cause running issues. Can't imagine it'd be particularly expensive, appreciate you don't want to be just throwing parts at it but might be worth a try!
That because it’s only happening on cold like someone already said after hours then again,it will either be intake gasket leak till warm or exhaust gasket,,ecu software I would get checked and mapped anyway as potentially could be decatted maybe?? Without a map it’s dumping fuel on cold start to warm cats it no longer has,,,,spray brake cleaner everywhere on cold start
Been looking forward to this Jesse mate, loving your content 👏 I’ve just started my UA-cam car challenge myself so watching curiously haha 👊 good luck mate
Good video as ever, who would have seen a replaced engine coming? The G4FJ comes in quite a few hyundai and kia cars with a couple of power levels, so it would take someone detailed knowlage to know what the iteration of the block you have is from. Can't think how it would cause a misfire (edit unless there are ancillaries from a different power level variant or even sensors). But cracked turbo bypass valve could easily be causing problems.
@gaztl1000s G4FG is the NA engine, the engine in Jessie's Kia is the G4FJ/G the last letter is the iteration of the engine, the G4FG is the turbo T-GDI variant so will probably have lower compression maybe stronger pistons/rods/crank and possible different machinings or block/head height etc..
It possibly could be the fuel pump? Only reason I say this is because if its faulty it will sometimes struggle to start and misfire. Going on the assumption that the car was driving fine before the previous owner sold it and it had the newer engine in. But great detective work otherwise!
Just another thing to be weary off, if say that ecu is able to work with that engine, any parts you put in, or previous owners, it may not be right for the car. Like coil pack etc I’d double check any parts aswel make sure they are for that engine also
Can you just map the ecu to the engine ? Maybe just put a stage 1 on it. Mallory performance ?? They could help ? Or buy the ecu for the engine and get it mapped to the car ? Just thinking out loud lol Keep going Jessie fella, class videos.
If it were me I’d contact KIA and get as much info about what work they have carried out on the car. Theres no way they’d bung that hose up like that on a customers car. And imo I don’t even think they’d put any other engine in it that the one that was supposed to be in it. My guess is it’s on its third engine and the one that’s in it now is from a euro 6 car meaning the ECU is programmed differently to meet euro 6 emissions. Which could cause a rough idle because it could be messing up the fueling on cold start. The ecu is doing one thing but the engine is set up to do something else. Because your injectors are fine, all the sensors seem to be doing what they should, all the live data looks good. As someone else mentioned check that the spark plugs you’ve fitted are for the engine that’s in the car. If there’s a difference in plugs that could cause a misfire
Have you pulled that solenoid for timing completely out? It can be blocked with carbon slightly causing misfire on startup because the oil is still thick and no pressure in the oil gallery. Let me know please 👍
Nice video Jesse. What a nightmare situation! But it makes for entertaining stuff.! Good luck finding out what it is. I'll keep watching, liking and commenting.!
Try smoke test the intake system from cold to make sure no leaks anywhere as it may be the case it seals back up when it warms up and possibly reason why it needs to stand for 3 to 4hrs at a time
So much for car vertical check wont tell ya somone has stuck a new lump in it and then found out it dont run right and flogged it onto to a dealer as a trade in.... i wonder if the ecu can be swapped to the newer one and key and clocks programmed to it
The only car you've had a massive issue with, that you so far haven't been able to solve, is one sourced from Calvin. I remember a few years back watching LLF and Calvin was in a few videos. There were a lot of comments about Calvin chopping cars etc, and loads of rumours about him being dodgy. I've also read that comments have been deleted from the previous owner stating he told Calvin about the issues, not a good look tbf! I'd stick to swapping cars with the same sort of people you've swapped with in the past. The thing is, you're spending a lot on repairs and at that point you might as well save up and buy a supercar. You're also getting deals and freebies in return for promotions and ads, which isnt costing you but would cost someone like me. I'm genuinely not being a dick, I'm just pointing out the view point of some of your viewership and making the point that the goal of the series isn't practical
Definetly check this! Check to see if the spark plugs are for the right engine, could be different sizes making the engine run rough. I had a car which had wrong size in it, ran rough on start up. The car had spark plugs too short, the longer ones worked perfectly. It ran like a different car all together.
Actually I had this issue on a mx bike. I stupidly fitted a plug that was too small because it was the one the was sent out to me in the service kit. I could t get the bike to start after I’d serviced it. It had compression and a spark tec but just wouldn’t start. I put the old correct plug back in and it fired up second kick as always
Also about the engine light its mostly a crack in the membrane of the bypass valve on top of the intercooler they crack easy .. or it can be a vacume line to the solenoid in the back of the intercooler
We bought a 5 door kia ceed gt in 2014 with 6000 miles on clock ran the vehicle without fault until 2022 at 135000 miles where we started having a misfire under acceleration it went to 3 different kia dealerships for weeks at a time and even kia were unsuccessful in diagnosis and I myself stripped parts off that you have and unfortunately couldn't fix and sent it on its way into the either unfortunate because car had great service but became to unreliable without resolution.
At this point everything is pointing to an ecu flash or replacement to the newer one and maybe just maybe that could be the issue, at this point it's the only thing anyone could do.. also maybe see if a scrap yard has a cee'd gt 17 plate in and see if you can get the expansion tank to route that hose.( to be on the safe side as they say) other than that there isn't much else to replace or check
I saw a podcast where a couple of car UA-camrs were talking about the thumbnails and it's all to do with the mystical algorythm and how it promotes videos (apparently)
@@wayned5041 it’s a “confused/scratching head” stance if I just stood straight with no expression looking directly into the camera it would be a bit weird 🤣
It’s seen be it got wrong engine fitted as sensor may different information for ECU cause conflicts data. That hose bank shouldn’t be there, that other red flagged wrong engine type.
Check the fuel and filter. Lift the rear seats and inspect the tank to have a look at the fuel and also the fuel filter, the engine shouldn't matter the blocks head and so on are the same. These are some engine and ecu.
Check the camshaft part numbers I had the problem with a diesel Kia had one lobe for the cam sensor to read not 3 what it should have had. Had a misfire and nothing come up on a code read might be worth a check
Quick tip when working under the car always put a wheel under it cuz if you jack gives way or your axel stands your a dead man safety first my brother trust me I've seen it happen more then once
Gutted you're having all these problems mate. On your side mate but I genuinely think Calvin knew the problem was bigger than he let on and pushed you into taking his lemon of a car. Onwards and forwards though mate good luck with everything.
update the ecu to the right one. It makes complete sense why it only does it on cold start, its got the wrong air to fuel mixture cause it obviously runs rich from cold and woudk explain why its fine when it gets to operating temp. Maybe also give kia Nottingham a call to ask about what they did to it to shed some more light
Obviously let's hope they used the same ECU, that goes without saying. But as everyone has said, your ECU guy will be able to put the stock 2017 map on the ECU, or at least a tuned file for a 2017 engine. Given the ECU itself is the same.
Jesse is swapping cars to get to his goal ,trouble with cars is you win some and loose some , next car he swaps might be worse hopefully not but a bad car is more content than a good one.. Good luck Jesse
If it's not the turbo bypass valve and flashing the ECU to match the engine doesn't work, I would just get a stage 1 flash with a cold start delete on it.
Jesse. Echo the suggestions from others here. Could the ECU be running with an older version of a firmware with the cold start misfire bug? Perhaps KIA may have a new ECU firmware that will fix it? Or back to the ECU guy to flash it with a new version.
The misfire is definitely due to a vacuum leak which results in a rich running condition at cold start, I can’t believe the garage he took it to couldn’t figure that out, even after the smoke test in the previous video an air leak was found but just ignored , I bit more knowledge of how an engine works is required here
@JesseCollingham sounds ideal tbh given where you're at now. Hope it ends up being something simple and cheap the more investigating you do. Such a good series so far. First video I saw was when you went to that dealer with mixed reviews, turned out to have all sorts of treasure laying about and the blokes were sound.
have you tryed a compression/ leakdown test low psi in that cyclinder could cause a bad misfire on cold start ups might be worth a quick test easyly done i think i have a gauge if you need to borrow Jesse
Surely if Kia swapped the engine they should of sourced the correct engine variant for the car or upgraded the other components needed to work with that version of engine including the ECU. Having a pipe dangling blocked off like it is isn’t exactly what you expect from a main dealer or any garage for that matter it comes across like a bodge job done by them I would contact the Kia garage they should still be liable as they haven’t performed to a high enough standard instead the bodged it
Ask your mapping mate if he’s done a newer model ceed gt re map,if he has he will have to original file on his laptop to put onto the ecu and try that and see if it runs right. If not he will be able to get you a file to put on it
Could it need a different ECU if it's a different engine. Does it possibly have the old engine model ECU on the newer version engine causing an issue with air fuel ratio and other factors?
Are you going to share the total cost of all the parts and repairs you’ve done to all the cars in this series? Although you’re swapping and trading up, it’s not free. What have you had to invest?
Wondered what happened to the old lump usually reliable asf these Kia’s, someone watching this knows everything, maybe ask Calvin for the customer number to ring to shed some light should have all his details if traded it in never no 🤷🏻♂️
Maybe swap it for the latest ECU for the engine and get it remapped, I've done it loads with Triumph bikes I've done took an ECU and swapped for later ECU

Keep it up mate you’ll get to bottom of it always love watching your videos ❤ ignore the idiots with unnecessary comments. 👌
This would actually make so much sense
Actually I had this issue on a mx bike. I stupidly fitted a plug that was too small because it was the one the was sent out to me in the service kit. I could t get the bike to start after I’d serviced it. It had compression and a spark tec but just wouldn’t start. I put the old correct plug back in and it fired up second kick as always
Glad your back lad
Joe at Barrow Motors had the same problem with a fiat all down to the colour of the dipstick because of a misfiring Good luck 👍👍👍👍👍
Why do car youtubers always put their hands on their heads for a thumbnail
I saw a podcast where a couple of car UA-camrs were talking about the thumbnails and it's all to do with the mystical algorythm and how it promotes videos (apparently)
I mean if I spent a bunch of time trying to fix a misfire for ages and nothing happened, I would do the same thing
@@wayned5041 it’s a “confused/scratching head” stance if I just stood straight with no expression looking directly into the camera it would be a bit weird 🤣
You’ve answered your own question
It’s for a thumbnail
It’s seen be it got wrong engine fitted as sensor may different information for ECU cause conflicts data. That hose bank shouldn’t be there, that other red flagged wrong engine type.
Yeahhhhh buddy been waiting for this one!
Are the spark plugs and coils pack correct?
Quick tip when working under the car always put a wheel under it cuz if you jack gives way or your axel stands your a dead man safety first my brother trust me I've seen it happen more then once
I enjoy your vids, but you really need to stop saying actually all the time 😆
Finally. Been waiting for this
Gutted you're having all these problems mate. On your side mate but I genuinely think Calvin knew the problem was bigger than he let on and pushed you into taking his lemon of a car. Onwards and forwards though mate good luck with everything.
Not Fancy putting the costs of the car going into the garage for real idea how much the bill would be
@@liambunn367 wgs always help out with the channel mate
update the ecu to the right one.
If the engine is pretty much the same a remap centre should be able to fash it to the newer software finger cross that solves it for you
Should have got the s3 instead of that Kia.
Who would have thought putting a different engine that is not the right one for this car could cause this problem.
Jesse. Echo the suggestions from others here. Could the ECU be running with an older version of a firmware with the cold start misfire bug? Perhaps KIA may have a new ECU firmware that will fix it? Or back to the ECU guy to flash it with a new version.
That Kia’s been a nightmare !
You'll need an outdoor heater soon if you work outside lol
Another Great Content ever 👌
Great stuff Jesse, try tbr ECU update 👍🤞
The misfire is definitely due to a vacuum leak which results in a rich running condition at cold start, I can’t believe the garage he took it to couldn’t figure that out, even after the smoke test in the previous video an air leak was found but just ignored , I bit more knowledge of how an engine works is required here
How could the misfire on cold start be anything to do with oil? and if it was - the damage would already be done wouldn't it?
@@Alex-iq5bi wrong oil or oil being too thick could clog up something like the VVT solenoid
So glad you noticed you could get it on with out taking all that off lol
have you tryed a compression/ leakdown test low psi in that cyclinder could cause a bad misfire on cold start ups might be worth a quick test easyly done i think i have a gauge if you need to borrow Jesse
If you watched previous video you’ld’ve known he’s done it
@@jacobjakub474 Must of missed that one then my bad trying to catch up lol
Surely if Kia swapped the engine they should of sourced the correct engine variant for the car or upgraded the other components needed to work with that version of engine including the ECU. Having a pipe dangling blocked off like it is isn’t exactly what you expect from a main dealer or any garage for that matter it comes across like a bodge job done by them I would contact the Kia garage they should still be liable as they haven’t performed to a high enough standard instead the bodged it
Just buy engine ECU kit with keys, locks etc from the car with same engine you have. Easiest and cheapest way to fix this problem
Lad you literally pulled the plug on the solenoid last video and it ran better. Change the solenoid don’t just assume it’s fine cos you cleaned it
Thats a massive problem brother, gl!🤔😱😱💀💀💀🙏🙏🤝🇬🇧🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Ask your mapping mate if he’s done a newer model ceed gt re map,if he has he will have to original file on his laptop to put onto the ecu and try that and see if it runs right.
If not he will be able to get you a file to put on it
Calvin swapped you a lemon 🍋
Both of them knew the risks
@@Audimad52one more then the other by the looks of it....
I know it sounds daft have the injectors been coded as that helps with cold start
The S3 was better bro
Could it need a different ECU if it's a different engine. Does it possibly have the old engine model ECU on the newer version engine causing an issue with air fuel ratio and other factors?
Do you think the turbo bypass sensor could be anything to do with the miss fire
Check the plugs and coils are correct you have put in it if its a different engine you never know.
I would go down the ECU remap route be cheaper than the stealer
Surely kia are responsible for this error regardless of ownership change . Hopefully get it sorted
Has the injectors been coding to that ecu? If it’s a different engine may have different injectors programmed in
Are you going to share the total cost of all the parts and repairs you’ve done to all the cars in this series? Although you’re swapping and trading up, it’s not free. What have you had to invest?
Wouldn’t the turbo bypass valve that’s split cause it to misfire till the ecu adjusts for the lean condition caused by the air leak?
what model xtool do you use ? looks like a good piece of kit
Just got it mate it’s mint!
It’s the XTOOL IP919 Pro
Wondered what happened to the old lump usually reliable asf these Kia’s, someone watching this knows everything, maybe ask Calvin for the customer number to ring to shed some light should have all his details if traded it in never no 🤷🏻♂️
Strong when stock, plenty gone bang with a stage 1….
@ was a stock ecu mate , u less someone has flashed back to stock , but then u can see that and he’s had it tested weird🤷🏻♂️
Maybe swap it for the latest ECU for the engine and get it remapped, I've done it loads with Triumph bikes I've done took an ECU and swapped for later ECU
I'm still on the vvt solenoid as that's the only thing that made a difference to the cold start when you messed on in the last video
