In the third of the "Mad Max" movies, Max (Mel Gibson) drifts into an evil town ruled by Turner. There he becomes a gladiator and gets dumped in the desert where he is rescued by a band of feral orphans who have been looking for help for years. When several of them take his appearance as a sign and go off into the desert, he follows them back to the town.

One of my favorite ending scenes to any movie and her tip of the cap to Max by sparing him and respecting him as a soldier. Tina will be missed here and for her body of work. May she rest in peace. Classy lady and flawlessly delivered here…love her laugh too.
I wouldn't say Auntie spared him. She left him in the wasteland without water, food, weapons, or transportation, and knowing that the closest civilization - Bartertown - is a place he can't go back to without being killed on sight. An optimist would say Auntie gave him a chance; a realist would say she condemned him to a slow death instead of a merciful one.
@@dhunter1133 depends, I bet Ironbar probably had some weapons on him as he was head of Auntie's security, those wrecks might have some food/water/fuel stored on or in them, and one of those dune buggies might be salvageable if flipped back onto their wheels. I'd say it was more a power play by her, putting on a show for her men that Max is so beneath her he isn't even worth killing.

@@dhunter1133 She knew he could fend for himself. But it's not really about reality it's a movie. And he had the classic hero like qualities and resourcefulness. But yeah a regular person in a real life scenario would be most likely be screwed out there.
"Well... ain't we a pair. Raggedy man." I just love that line and the way she delivers it with a laugh. That whole beat after the plane takes off to her driving away is one of my favorite movie moments of all time. Something beautiful about that moment of respect between two enemies and parting ways now that one of them has won. Perfect.

@@michaelabercrombie7698 Actually she saw Max would eventually end up like she did. She started Barter town with good intentions, but then became a dictator. She saw the same in Max, thus she saw them as a pair... and equally lost.
Totally unbelievable. Film thing only.
What a brilliant scene. The keyword is “Pair” aunty recognized max not just as her equal but as a survivor. She didn’t have a problem with him personally. It just shows she wasn’t evil. They took someone important to her plans and she chased after them. After he was gone, there was no reason to continue chase. No reason to keep fighting max. The last words. Goodbye, soldier. Shows she acknowledges who mad max is. While this may be confused with respect. Acknowledging can sometimes be more powerful. He was but a stranger looking for gas and left her town destroyed. But she recognized he was like her. Both people clinging the old ways of helping others. Her trying to bring civilization back as best as she can and him helping others. While he tries to always gain something and not do things for free at the end, he always ends up getting nothing in return. Always getting left empty handed. But he survives. He’s a soldier. Aunty realize she didn’t deal with your average fighter so she left laughing.
Well, I suspect that she recognized him of being a strong survivor, and maybe (if he comes around to bartertown) she can work with him again. The other henchmen that she has around her seemed rather "lacking" in comparison.

She knew he was a decent man - he had every reason to kill blaster, but he didnt which is a rarity in the wasteland, and she had every to kill max, but she recognised that hlm helping the others escape to try and rebuild some kind of civilisation, is the same thing she tried with barter town - Two battered souls, that recognised the good and value in each other .

I agree, especially with that "battered souls" part. There was nothing to gain from killing Max. Just like two boxers or opposing teams leaving the ring or a field with having gained nothing more than respect for the other. Who won? Who lost? Doesn't matter, at least not anymore. "Ain't we a pair."
Saw a documentary on this once that she ad-libbed the "goodbye, soldier" line, and when Miller objected, she stood her ground on it. Being that she was Tina Turner, he kept it in, and *that* was the right call. I saw this film on first release, and that moment is one of the standouts of the film and one that stuck with me down through the years. The respect, the "lose today, win tomorrow" approach, and just the casual cool of being boss enough to walk away on your terms.
This is the only scene in this movie that I kept coming back to.
She was bested by a man who had nothing but the clothes on his back, and there was nothing to prove from killing a downed man surrounded by your men. Its a cowardly.
Auntie accepted the defeat and walked away laughing like a true boss.
It’s unfortunate that she never had another role after this movie. She wasn’t a terrible actress by comparison to others who transitioned from music to acting.
Simple line but adds so much into the depth of character.

Tina Turner was so badass! I LOVED her in this movie! RIP Ms. Turner, but tis a fact that all of our greatest ICONIC hollywood performers have to pass on eventually. At least they left us movies that will stand the test of time. :D
Auntie wasn't a warlord like the Lord Humongous, Toe-Cutter, or Imortem Joe. She was more of a leader with a code, who tried to rebuild her little corner of the world. There was a form of law in Barter Town.
She also had a kind of respect of Max.
Toe cutter was just a thug. Noehere near the power that Humongous or Immortan Joe had.
@@brianmerritt5410 Toecutter was the most eloquent, witty and charismatic of the lot. It's clear he's way more than just a stupid thug. Those under him are thugs but it's clear he's no fool, and neither is his second in command Bubba Zanetti.

Also , not goona lie I thought immortan joe was humongous, they show his burnt/damaged back, they show the back of head pumping, and he wears a suit that looks all muscle. I thought they were trying to show us he survived and this was his civilization he built since. He also addresses people the same way, and at the end it shows a guy who resembles the main thug guy from road warrior that humongous chokes out then later chains to his vehicle
because he earned his Life through fighting and Auntie respect someone who has the will to fight and has a strong desire to live on.. that's why she says "aren't we a pair raggedy man goodbye soldier"

"Goodbye, soldier": Auntie's respect for the only man who ever bested her.
He softened her steel heart when she saw he was willing to get killed to save the others. She knew he did not expect mercy since she tried to execute him before, so, she knew for sure this was a selfless act, a rarety in the world of the post apocalypse, that's why she laugh at him, she was trying to show him she also could be generous, her ego did not allow her to just order him to be killed, it was beneath her to do after what she saw of him, first sacrificing his deal with her to spare blaster in the arena, and in the end staying behind at her complete mercy just so the others had a chance.
@@vulcan2519 they both had that in common. She took care of bartertown the way he helped the others, sacrificing there own needs. Just my opinion, though.

I don't think as a villian. She is a survivor like Max and she is more focused on what is best for Barter Town. So Max did best her but she also saw him as a kindred spirt. But that is just me. LOL
This scene and this line is what sets Auntie apart from the other "villains" of the Mad Max series and makes her the best.
Aunties the best. She’s completely sane and just as rare as Max is.
Aunty was as ruthless as the wasteland when she had to be but Bartertown did bring law and order
Say what you will about the movie, but Aunty Entity is my favorite Mad Max villain by far. She has real depth and complexity to her, has an endearing dynamic with Max, and Turner just gives an incredibly entertaining performance as her.
*One of the best endings in movie history* fades into darkness, silhouette emerges from Max's bodily figure heading onto the unknown, already seeking the next chapter, followed by a fitting ending music ....a classic!

Yeah, it might be better to call her an antagonist than a villain. A villain is an antagonist who's evil. An antagonist is someone whose goals are simply at odds with those of the protagonist. As you say, chasing off her opponents is something Aunty Entity can work to her advantage and as she says, she can always just rebuild. Her decision at the end not to kill Max (or even punish him) shows that for all her ruthlessness, she's not evil, hence why Max looks so thoughtful, even a bit admiring, as she leaves. She's a conqueror, but she's one with an admirable goal.
Leaving him in the desert with nothing for miles is torture enough. She thinks he’ll probably die slowly.
Respectfully disagree. Every "Mad Max" movie ends with Max standing alone in a vast wasteland. He's a survivor. Auntie knows and respects that. To her he's a soldier of this post-apocalyptic world. She looks at Max and sees herself., a survivor and soldier. Anyway, she got what she bargained for, she is now 100% in control of barter town.

The look on Max’s face as he drives by sees the kids for the last time says it all about him: a decent man in a dangerous landscape. RIP “Auntie.”
Same look Tom Hardy as “Max” gives at the end in “Fury Road,” the look of the selfless anti-hero.
A Lesson in Sacrifice! Max gave of himself and everything he fought for through the whole film to save the kids! WONDERFUL! and so beautifully shot!

But she left us so much to enjoy. We can mourn but also celebrate her life. She was so amazing in this movie, I loved every minute of her on screen. She has joined other heroes of the silver screen.
I first saw this movie in '88 or '89.........that engine note when he gets on it passing the plane is just...orgasmic.
He started a police 👮🏻♂️ officer in the first max film now he’s become a soldier from surviving all the battles,very memorable indeed.

The endings for these films are always bittersweet. The good guys always win, with the exception of Max who is once again all alone. Max gained and lost a family for the second time.

Did you guys realize that Logan (2017) has been inspired on Mad Max 3? Besides having an aussi actor playing the main character there is a moment in Logan when the protagonist is captured by a group of kids and gets his beard shaved by them while he was sleeping. In both films the kids think that they are supposed to leave the place and try to find some other mistic place where only good things happen, but the pragmatic and disillusioned protagonist tries to convince them to stay. It's so similar!
I love how sad everyone looks that Max left the plane. Like they know they made it out, and they know they won, but they also know that Max had to sacrifice himself for them to win. Despite the fact that Max convinced them that he wasn’t who they thought he was, many of them were still youthful, wide-eyed kids. I feel like this moment really granted them some maturity, and probably taught them more about the world they lived in.

Everyone talking about auntie’s respect, but I just keep rewinding back to Max’s truck, damn that V8 sounds good, sounds like a Top Fuel dragster 😍
IIRC, Bartertown was producing energy based on converting pig feces into methane, so I always assumed all the vehicles were somehow running on nitromethane. So yeah, they would sound like dragsters. :)

In my opinion Fury Road wasnt bad, Tom Hardy isnt a bad actor either but i felt the absense of Mel, he will be forever the one and only Max.

What a scene. The theme music as he pulls out from behind the plane always gives chills, as do the shared looks between Max and the plane's passengers, and the way his truck engine revs as he floors it and pulls ahead of the plane.
I've always loved the scene when he pulls up next to the plane and the song beat slows down, then he speeds up and song starts playing faster.. goosebumps i tell ya

He may not have been THE Captain Walker the children were hoping he was, but he was A Captain Walker who got them safely on that flight home to 'tomorromorrowland'.
Only when they got to their "Tomorrowmorrowland", they were shocked to see otherwise: the city of Perth in ruin, realizing a little too late that Max was telling the truth about the apocalypse.

Max's expression at 0:19 is so powerful, stoic and expression of inner strength. It struck me later that Kevin Costner (whom I respect for his films as well) had copied that expression perfectly to express that quiet power in his roles. It's sort of the way a real man should be.
The most dangerous stunt ever in a Max film too. Watch how close Jedidiah’s plane comes to Max’s head. And Gibson did that stunt himself for reall. Now thats some serious trust to pull that shot off.
When Max is laying on the ground? Hell, that wasn't dangerous. The plane cleared him by almost ten feet.
To this day this scene gives me a good goosebumps feeling how max said he's goodbye with a look
When i first saw this movie i thought this was the dumbest ending of all time but it grew on me.

I love the look on Max’s face as he sped off and got in front of the plane. I miss these man moments. That’s y I love movies from that era. When men were men. Not a lot of that today.
It has nothing to do with men being men. It's about heroes being heroes.
It's "men being men" that precipitates the collapse of civilization prior to the events of the series.

This sequence represents a popular action movie cliche; that being the scenario involving an airplane trying to take off to avoid a head on collision with a charging vehicle. It had been done before 1985 in a number of movies and its been done again many times since, but this is still the greatest depiction of that action cliche in the history of that action cliche.
