I'm a hairdresser who loves vintage hair, and I have 2 tips for you. Tip 1--you need a brush with thicker bristles, it really helps to get the hair to mesh. Tip 2--when you get it to the stage where it's been brushed out a lot, switch to a comb. Use wide bristles to get the tangles out and the fine bristles to form the wave pattern. Good luck! ☺
I love how you don't hide the struggle to get your desired Style. I think a lot of people who try vintage styling think they have done wrong when they encounter that process. It's nice to see the raw version.. Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial.
Luiza Marques same! Random question though. My hair is super thick, long and full of dense curls. Do you think a brush out would work on my hair? Like I've seen vintage styles for long hair but I'm hesitant to try because my hair has always been very...temperamental.😂
Sarah Riddle you said you had curly hair, do you mean a brush out on your natural curls or curling your hair like in this video? If you want to do a brush out with your natural curls, I would suggest making sure your hair is well moisturized before brushing. If it’s dry and frizzy, let’s just say it’s not going to turn out well 😂 If you mean curling your hair like in the video and then brushing it out, I do think it could work. I also have long and curly hair (although it’s kinda thin) and I do sometimes curl my hair with Velcro rollers, although I’ve never actually tried a true vintage brush out. I think you should just do it! You will never know until you try! You probably already tried it though, since this reply is so late haha 😂

My hair always sounds like that if I try to brush it. I honestly can't (or at least shouldn't) brush my hair when it's dry because it's SO frizzy, curly, poofy and insane. Pretty waves, not even close. Ringlet curls, nope. It's just a curly, frizzy, fluffy as hell nightmare. So I have to brush it in the shower SOAKED in conditioner. Also, the type of brush she's using is part of why it's doing that to her. She needs to get the kind that doesn't flex/push in like that, if you know what I mean. Those ones you can push the bristles in with your hand, are terrible, especially on curly hair. They have too much give and instead of brushing out the tangles, they just torture your head lol
As a hair dresser I suggest for you to buy other kind of brush, your current hairbrush is not the right kind for brushing curls, thats why you have to pull so much of your hair, better use a brush with dense brisels like a round brush or one of those vintage brushes!
Curly-haired girl here, and I was cringing too. Don't brush curls at all if you can help it -- use a wide-toothed comb. Also, your hair is so thick, you are probably NEVER going to be able to brush all the tangles out, especially after curling. If you're going to go curly, embrace it and work with it. Don't fight it.

I absolutely adore this hairstyle, but I have extremely thick, pin straight hair. I can get Shirley temple curls but they fall out in just a little while. And I feel if I tried to brush the curls out the curls would completely disappear.
I don’t know what I watch these kind of videos. I don’t wear vintage, I’m not a woman, heck, I don’t even have long hair! I’ve been wearing near shaved hair since I was 4 and I recently started balding. I like them anyways.
@@catherinejustcatherine1778 Depends on what kind of brush/comb you use, and also damp, not wet And when you have naturally curly hair then you have to brush it when damp (I even recommend keeping a spray bottle with water nearby so you can damp your hair while brushing) otherwise it just gets frizzier and frizzier and is also prone to breaks
I loved the video, and would love to see you doing more hair videos. As a vintage-hair-person myself I just love watching authentic looking styling! A "better" brush, meaning the right brush, can make such a huge difference in the brush-out! For brushing out a vintage wet set I love my Denman grooming brush with both nylon and boar bristles (even though I hate that it isn't cruelty free, but I can't live without it!😳) And it smoothes while detangling very gently. It makes the brush-out much easier and faster for me. It's like a vintage boar brush with much more detangling, penetrating power, and it's not too, too expensive. 😄
This might be weird but I'm black and we have the same hair texture when mine is straightened. I've never seen a fair person have the same texture as my hair. It's even the same length! Finally a tutorial I can follow! The style is beautiful!
When I was little, my mom and grandma would frequently put my hair in sponge rollers, and I always hated sleeping in them because my head would hurt. We also never brushed the curls out, so I definitely had the Shirley Temple vibe going on.
I have been watching videos from your library for a few days now....and I subscribed. The more I watch, the more I LOVE your personality! Please, NEVER stop posting videos!!
I tried this last night. Here's what I learned. If you're doing a wet set: be sure it's dry before taking out. If you're doing a heat set: be sure it's cool before taking out. Once you get it brushed out and arranged, stop! Also, don't touch it through the day. That is hard for me. Also, the flatness on top is the complete opposite of the way I usually style. Takes getting used to! Overall I do like it. My hair looks about 2 inches shorter due to the curliness. Thanks Karolina!
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that gets frustrated when I feel like the brushing is making it worse, only to keep brushing and find out a it might of been fine lol. Sometimes I'm right though and it comes out terrible.
9:47 thats actually happened before, and with people singing badly too. i remember the last episode of "Moon Quest" by the Yogscast was totally deleted because they sung a song in it.
Something went terribly wrong with my set on my wedding day and I didn't have time to fix it. It was tragic and I haven't been brave enough to curl my hair since.

my goodness, I don't plan on having a wedding anytime soon, but just the thought of trusting myself enough to do my own hair is terrifying and the possibility of doing it wrong is one of my biggest nightmares 😭 I'm seriously so impressed whenever I see people doing their own wedding hair. I'm pretty sure yours wasn't as bad as it sounds though ♥️
@ I know this is a wildly old comment, but honestly I don't know who I'd ever hire to do my hair for an event as big as my own wedding. I've had tons of professionals who swore up and down they could do a wet set flat out fail to get my hair to do anything resembling pre 1980's, where as I sleep in pin curls every night and style my set daily. Every now and then I think I'll give another stylist a go for an event and its always a huge waste of money and time.
Me and you have the SAME type of hair. I have a ton of hair too. Except my ends are dead from being bleached. 😭 try Kenra pomade on those fluffy ends. It helps relax it a bit

Thanks for the tip! It's so hard to get Kenra in Europe though 😭
You have gorgeous hair. Thanks for all your effort, all the brushing and sleeping on the curlers. That part isn't fun, I remember. It looked pretty, so shiny and thick. Thanks!
your hair is so beautiful and holds a curl with nothing but WATER and mine is so limp and fine and won't hold a curl with a million products ::weeps unfashionably::
I do have fine hair too but roller curls (the same kind which Karolina uses) work for me unlike heat curls. I tried them two days ago and surprisingly theya still hold even thought I wasn't very gentle to them and then in a hairstyle in which they should normally straighten. It's almost magic.
izzybeth have you tried using a vintage setting lotion? Weak beer that’s been left overnight to go flat (the smell goes away as the hair drys), sugar melted in water, flax seeds (missladylace has a good tutorial).
I love this! Your hair looks great, and you are so adorable and funny! Also, a little hint: Brush or comb hair from the bottom up, otherwise you tear your hair. This tip saved my life and my tangles!
dear Karolina, do you have any advice for wearing glasses with vintage (or fashion in general. my style is an amalgamation)??? sincerely a farsighted person.
Hello Mean Mom, my wonderful/glamorous mother taught my sisters and I how to roll on hair on brush sponge rollers back in the 1950s, (torture) then sponge roller were invented, I was an expert by the first grade. My hair was fairly straight and did not hold a curl for very long. This made me sad. But the sixties came and straight hair was all the rage. Now days , I can add sculpting gel with my pink rollers for an authentic 1940s look or a flat iron for the long straight look and everything in-between with an assortment of bobby pins, Spanish combs, hair bands and so on. Thank you for this posting, I will use this technique tonight. I too dress vintage, 90% in public . Most of the time its women who compliment me. I enjoy your channel. You're in my top 5.
It fascinates me as a naturally curly-haired woman, to see someone brush through curls! I would never brush my hair while it was dry. It just makes a huge, fluffy mess. Yet somehow, when people with straight hair do curls, they brush it and it looks great. Go figure!
I’m really happy you make hair tutorials because I have almost the same hair as you and it’s hard to find styles. Vintage updos (and updos in general) don’t usually work for me because my hairs too thick. Same thing with curling with curlers. Just...thank you❤️
Try using a serum on the mid length to ends first then a Tangle teaze hair brush to brush out your retro curl knots before forming the waves. That is what I do for my retro hair. I then use a tail comb and clips to form the waves with strong hairspray. Also, for the fly away frizzy bits around hairline or top of the head, use a kabuki brush used ONLY for hair and spray it with hairspray to brush over areas to make lie flat, then heat of hand to set :)
as a Hairdresser I'm going to share this advice: 1 works best on hair that taken care of (trimmed regularly) to prevent the frizzy ends 2 use a soft bristle cushion brush, i recommend an Isinis, for combing out 3 for more volume on top you can tease the root 4 work a light gel or curl cream through the hair along with the water, very light as to not weigh the hair down or make it look dirty last thing is, the wet to dry action sets the curl, so if your hair isn't wet enough all through you will get uneven curl. It is also important to make sure your hair is completely dry when you take the curlers out.
Love your videos btw and 2017 so you may already know this. Taking hair off roller = roll your wrist in the opposite direction and unwind the curl while keeping it intact. Also as a black girl (meaning curly hair) who grew up with my hair relaxed and setting it on sponge rollers (and paper bag stips, and plastic rollers) regularly, you need a different brush, whew child! Honestly, a good rake of the fingers in smaller sections BEFORE you brush could help, theeeeeen, maybe a large paddle brush starting at the ends??? Either way, ignore me if you already know this or don't care. Back to binge-watching your videos. ✌🏽 🚶🏾♀️
I have the same issue with my hair being super thick and instantly wanting to tangle when it’s curled. I found that brushing it starting at the bottom instead of at the scalp really helps to detangle, then I brush it regularly to help style it. Not that your hair isn’t beautiful, just thought this could help save your lovely delicate hands. 💕
You can use some gel and dampen your curl-resistant sections BEFORE rolling. Do it just before you put the roller in, so it doesn't have a chance to dry. Then hold a hair dryer to it on low until it is almost dry. It helps so much. using a leave in conditioner or light oil hair protector before curling would help your brush out process a ton. Using a fine tooth comb on each section just before curling may help also. I'm not sure about that brush either. If you do the above recommendations (oil at the end of the hair especially) and still have trouble then switch to a different brush.
as beautiful as hair like this is, I'm thankful mine is very short because I really don't have the patience to maintain it XD you look so beautiful, though! and I can't explain it, but like, your facial structure is also vintage, you know? some people have a very contemporary look to them, but I could picture you in the background of an actual photo from the 40's out of curiosity, how long does it take to style the hair?
Not one to usually comment but you are hilarious and easy to watch and very non intimidating. Most hair tutorials iam wayy too intimidating to click on but I love how down to earth you are. And your hair is amazing too
I actually learned a lot. Finally someone with as much hair as I have. Really happy that you have to put so many sections cause when I watch other hair videos they are much quicker done. Also the most valuable part is the brushing, though it's annoying but shows the magic of what the curled hair can do. The result was worth it, I would say. How long does it hold. Three days ore more? Have you meanwhile changed the brush and which one would you recommend? The comments below about brushes confused me. In particular with thick hair not all recommendations fit. I would so much love a neighbor or a friend coming over and we could do the hair on each other. More fun and less boring. Nobody does that nowadays. Or do they?
@@josielife4286 Oh heavens no. I have extremely thick hair, plus it's wavy, and I need to start at the bottom even on repeat passes, or I'll create terrible tangles that are a nightmare to get out.
Two things: I think why your brush out is giving you trouble is because of the way you're sort of twisting your before rolling it around the curler. It's making it extra twisted. Also it's getting caught on the balls on the brush's bristles. They have a denman plastic brush with that has just plastic bristles with no balls. But since this video is a year old, you might do things differently now in which case disregard! :D
Have you ever looked for a spray on detangling lotion? it makes curls SO much easier to brush out and you can probably just add it to your water spray! We have a lot of them available here in South Africa but you may have to look for a specialist or ethnic hairdresser in the UK...
Thanks for the vid. I had literally just roller set my hair before I watched it. Have it up in a hairnet and will scarf it to go to bed. Loved watching it thanks. I think you pick up a tip from everyone you watch, but I love that you show good and bad and not perfect all the way through. Much more inspiring not to give up at home. Loved what you did with the front section brushing up and pinning. Might have to have a go and see if my hair likes it. Thanks again. :)
A friend recommended your video and I really enjoyed watching it! I tried your way of setting and brushing my hair and really like it. I do however agree with everyone saying you should try a different brush. I use one that has both pins and bristles and I was able to truely brush out my thick in hair in a fraction of the time it took you. Your brush also seems really small with a short handle. Using a bigger brush with longer handle will probably help you a lot since you have more leverage! (The leverage from physics that is).
Awesome video! I haven’t seen a wet set video this detailed, and it’s giving me ideas to try at getting Marcel-type waves again. I suspect my hair may be waaaaay too long, but hey, I can try.

Plain Popcorn Snoods and hairnets♥️ if possible, I try to wear my hair in a hairnet at night and sleep without taking the pins out or brushing the hair (horrible, I know, but I often wake up the next day with my hair ready to go). I also often wear my hair in a snood on the second day of the set, so I can still use the remains of the curls on the third day and pin my hair in a looser hairdo or a curly ponytail.

@@catherinejustcatherine1778 Depends on what kind of brush/comb you use, and also damp, not wet
And when you have naturally curly hair then you have to brush it when damp (I even recommend keeping a spray bottle with water nearby so you can damp your hair while brushing) otherwise it just gets frizzier and frizzier and is also prone to breaks
I can relate tbh yeah its just like that
the blouse? the hair? the face? you are so elegant i'm in love
When I was little, my mom and grandma would frequently put my hair in sponge rollers, and I always hated sleeping in them because my head would hurt. We also never brushed the curls out, so I definitely had the Shirley Temple vibe going on.
Most reliable youtuber ever! I could watch your tutorials all day!
Ps: I just died with the Jar Jar Binks 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
9:17 I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! My hair is super curly/wavy but not in the back. Its like it all magically loses curliness. Odd.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that gets frustrated when I feel like the brushing is making it worse, only to keep brushing and find out a it might of been fine lol. Sometimes I'm right though and it comes out terrible.
I am so envious of how much hair you have and how thick it is. So beautiful. 😍
Try a WET brush, they have a detangling brush that would make light work of that! I use them all the time on clients with thick hair.
9:47 thats actually happened before, and with people singing badly too. i remember the last episode of "Moon Quest" by the Yogscast was totally deleted because they sung a song in it.
Wow, I wish women still did their hair like this today. So pretty!
who disliked this??
i want to have some words with them.
Karolina Żebrowska Try Etsy they have a lot of people on there who make their own homemade pomades.
Noodle Doodle huh? Me? Maybe that’s a glitch? I don’t have any, and I’m on private.
You have gorgeous hair. Thanks for all your effort, all the brushing and sleeping on the curlers. That part isn't fun, I remember. It looked pretty, so shiny and thick. Thanks!
2:06 when someone asks me why I bought those awful cookies I say “the tinbox”
that brushing routine is life. so much patience needed!
your hair is so beautiful and holds a curl with nothing but WATER and mine is so limp and fine and won't hold a curl with a million products ::weeps unfashionably::
Same. If I touch my hair with a brush after a night in curlers it would go straight.
I do have fine hair too but roller curls (the same kind which Karolina uses) work for me unlike heat curls. I tried them two days ago and surprisingly theya still hold even thought I wasn't very gentle to them and then in a hairstyle in which they should normally straighten. It's almost magic.
Have you ever gotten a perm?
izzybeth have you tried using a vintage setting lotion? Weak beer that’s been left overnight to go flat (the smell goes away as the hair drys), sugar melted in water, flax seeds (missladylace has a good tutorial).
You need setting lotion - someone on another video recommended Lotta Body
Does anybody else just Love the way her lipstick looks and the shape of her lips. It just seems so perfect
I am going to buy sponge rollers now! It’s great having someone with the same hair type & habits as me for tutorials, thank you!
I don’t even wanna think about how many hairs were sacrificed in that process
THOU HAST UPLOADEST
I remember using those kind of rollers growing up!! me and my sisters had long hair and would either braid it or roll it all the time.
Is it weird that I put your videos on as I’m falling asleep because you have such a relaxing voice?
„The detergent story“ killed me 😂😂😂
You look a bit like Peggy Carter, and you have beautiful hair.
For vintage fashion I would suggest looking at the glasses of the time or watching some youtube videos on it
Hello Mean Mom, my wonderful/glamorous mother taught my sisters and I how to roll on hair on brush sponge rollers back in the 1950s, (torture) then sponge roller were invented, I was an expert by the first grade.
I really appreciate you showing the brushing out process because I was always afraid I would ruin my curls that way.
I'm amazed at the level of artifice that getting a hairstyle involves. You look good.
When I saw Jar-Jar floating in your scarf I legit lost it and laughed out loud very loudly in the middle of the office. 😂
It fascinates me as a naturally curly-haired woman, to see someone brush through curls! I would never brush my hair while it was dry. It just makes a huge, fluffy mess. Yet somehow, when people with straight hair do curls, they brush it and it looks great. Go figure!
Right? Unfaaaaair 🤣🤣
Omg I had the same problem yesterday and I was like " WHY MY GODDAMN HAIR GOT SO TANGLED???" But now I got it. Thank you. I am in love with old stuff.
I’m really happy you make hair tutorials because I have almost the same hair as you and it’s hard to find styles. Vintage updos (and updos in general) don’t usually work for me because my hairs too thick. Same thing with curling with curlers. Just...thank you❤️
Have you tried with bigger rollers? I think they work better in thick hair, or try a pomade to make the brush out less painful :)
OKAY! Thank you for explaining the curl brushing out fiasco that i get into every time, I clearly just need to keep on brushing!
My grandma used to do curls like this on me when I was a small child. I remember how badly it hurt when she brushed them out 😶
as a Hairdresser I'm going to share this advice:
1 works best on hair that taken care of (trimmed regularly) to prevent the frizzy ends
2 use a soft bristle cushion brush, i recommend an Isinis, for combing out
3 for more volume on top you can tease the root
4 work a light gel or curl cream through the hair along with the water, very light as to not weigh the hair down or make it look dirty
last thing is, the wet to dry action sets the curl, so if your hair isn't wet enough all through you will get uneven curl.
🚶🏾♀️
If you do the above recommendations (oil at the end of the hair especially) and still have trouble then switch to a different brush.
you need to give yourself credit,i`m majorly impressed i`ve never considered doing vintage but you best believe your demonstration changed that.
as beautiful as hair like this is, I'm thankful mine is very short because I really don't have the patience to maintain it XD
you look so beautiful, though! and I can't explain it, but like, your facial structure is also vintage, you know? some people have a very contemporary look to them, but I could picture you in the background of an actual photo from the 40's
out of curiosity, how long does it take to style the hair?
Or do they?
Right when you started mourning your detergent, the video was interrupted by an ad for dish soap. The algorithm exists only to mock us
You're gorgeous...but be more gentle when you brush out! Start at the bottom, otherwise your breaking your hair. Love your videos!
Actually it's better to start from the top when brushing thick hair!
@@josielife4286 The way she's ripping at those tangles isn't good for the hair. She should definitely start at the bottom and work out the tangles.
@@josielife4286 Oh heavens no. I have extremely thick hair, plus it's wavy, and I need to start at the bottom even on repeat passes, or I'll create terrible tangles that are a nightmare to get out.
Every thought you have doing your hair goes through my mind when I set and brush out mine. Love it! 🙌
omg I died when I saw Jarjar Binks
Same.
Did you ever think about trying one of those tangle teaser brushes? It might help you getting through knots. Love your style and personality! :D
Also, some of them have anti-dandruff treatments built in!
I have exactly the same type of hair except mine is naturally curly. Trying to do vintage hairstlye: Struggle On A Whole New Level.
Here I am.
Curly and thin.
And lazy-incapable human -_-
I'm pretty sure Karolina's hair is curly too. She just blowdried it and that straightened it. I know because my hair was like that too.
Hahahahah you killed me ! I love your videos
This actually helped me... I DDINT REALIZED you have to hella brush your curls! Gonna have to try this again soon!
Thank you for that realistic tutorial! It's nice to see that even someone like you sometimes struggles with brushing out. :)
This is so much brushing! Nice done, it's works on you!
The joys of thin hair: the ease of brushing out curls
OMG FINALLY! Someone who has my hair problems! Good to know there's hope for me.
11:00 thanks, I paused the video to get a slice of cheesecake while my hot rollers set.
Awesome video! I haven’t seen a wet set video this detailed, and it’s giving me ideas to try at getting Marcel-type waves again. I suspect my hair may be waaaaay too long, but hey, I can try.
You never know. I know people with waist-length hair that have better sets than I do 😂
Write Read Sleep You should check out albinwonderland! She has really long hair that she wet sets all the time, and it looks absolutely gorgeous
When you were rolling your hair up, and humming to yourself.... I fell in love a little bit
You are so gorgeous and honestly your hair brushing was like asmr and I hope whoever I end up with has gorgeous thick hair like yours so I can brush it even when they don’t want me too lolol
YASSS I WAS WAITING
Did you say you only do a wet set once a week? How do you maintain the curl on the days after? Thank you in advance.
Thank you for the reply, that was very helpful :)
@ It would be interesting if you did a video showing the day-to-day progression of your hair and the use of hairnets and snoods etc to achieve that.
