Former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is one of many billionaires lining up to buy TikTock should it be banned in the US. Today's video explains why Congress wants to ban TikTock, what the ban Bill actually does, and offer some of my opinions on the matter. I personally think this is an extremely important First Amendment issue that needs to be handled very carefully instead of ham-fistedly.

He’s one of a few interested persons. And to clarify. TikTok is not directly owned by CCP. It’s owned by a company in China and they are obligated to share all user data to the CCP.

@@Drift0r I was a big fan of you until you stated that getting news from real people is worse than getting it from mainstream media which is CLEARLY bias and runs off of money.
That still doesn't instil any assurance in people that the application's data collection isn't being used for nefarious purposes.
This *is* the CCP we're speaking of. People have a valid reason to be concerned, especially given China's history of spying on foreign countries.
Some specifics: TikTok’s parent company Bytedance is based in the Cayman Islands, not China. Also, all data since 2023 has been stored on only US servers and is under US-based employee control. See “Project Texas”

The algorithm really loves this one politicians never make decisions based on serving the the average person but for all corporate interests
I think one factor as to why this gained so much momentum is because TikTok was a social media platform which was showing the realities of what Israel is doing in Gaza, which was otherwise being suppressed on US-owned social media sites. It would also explain why it's been rushed through, with bipartisan support, and isn't very thorough (as you mentioned in 7:04 15:48 16:12 18:59), because there are greater powers at play.

@@TEGRIDY_FARMSNo, we’re sad that 20-30 thousand innocent people died in Gaza. Over half being women and children. Yes, what Hamas did on Oct 7 was horrible, but what Israel is doing back is immensely way too overkill. Israel has killed 10x the civilians vs Hamas. And don’t forget, this all blew up because the British put forth a measure that allowed the Jewish people to own 55% of the land when the Palestinians already were living there and owned over 90%. Yes, the Jewish lived there a long time ago but mosty not anymore by the early 1900s. Imagine it like this.
Imagine if all of a sudden, there was a measure that gave the Native Americans and Mexicans to retake 55% of the land of the US since those groups used to own the land before the Europeans came along. Now, you’d be royally pissed because Americans were already living here.
Do you sit down and take it or do you fight back? Now, imagine if the Natives and Mexicans had a fuckton more firepower than the US actually allowing them to successfully retake the country and rule it. That’s basically what has happened in Israel/Palestine.

Despite the fact that I personally hate Tiktok, I don’t want it to be banned or regulated. People should have the right to make stupid decisions and do things like download TikTok, even if it actively harms them. We selectively allow people to make these choices with some activities (such as drinking alcohol), while not allowing it with other activities like using social media. As with the prohibition of alcohol, banning TikTok (as in a complete ban, not simply changing ownership of it) isn't going to stop people from using TikTok, people will find ways around the ban and bootleg it because the demand for it is so massive. Even when the government tries to do stuff thats "good for the people", the people often still want to do it, even wanting to do it more in some cases through reverse psychology. Personally I think the better route to go about this would be to take TikTok to court and argue that TikTok violated the terms of service contract that it made with its users. Either a) the US would win the case and TikTok would have to pay out millions or billions in fines and compensation and change their TOS such that it explicitly states user data could be given to the CCP, or b) TikTok wins and proves that their current TOS already implicitly states that user data could be given to the CCP. Either way, consumers will now know without a doubt that TikTok can in fact give their user data to the CCP, and after that it will be up to the consumer to decide if they want to use/ continue to use TikTok or not. People make stupid decisions, but being able to make stupid decisions isn't, and shouldn't, be illegal.

The motivation of the ban appears to be the government’s desire to control the narrative of the American people. (The same way they can is American owned sites) There’s really no other media platform that allows me to see thousands upon thousands of videos that show extensive evidence of how the government lies about certain events and topics. The news is brainrot, twitter is brianrot.. TikTok can be brainrot.. but I would feel so hopeless without my ability to see and feel the millions of other Americans who are able to share their dissenting opinions about the government..
Maybe there is an extent that some of the narratives pushed through the algorithm are politically charged by the Chinese communist party, but EVEN if that is the case, I would rather risk being ruled by China someday than have no knowledge about how we’re currently censored and enslaved
While I understand your sentiment, the main reason for the ban is the large amount of data that goes into CCP and what we KNOW they do with it and what they COULD be doing with it.

China was a cool place to visit but you should never want to live there under that regime. No matter how dysfunctional our government is; the past, current, and future, don’t take for granted the rights you have.

Any legislation that targets tiktok specifically and doesn't target Meta, Google, etc. will always read as blatant xenophobia. It just reinforces what we all already know that Democrats and Republicans are just two faces of the same party...
There needs to be something in place for young people, but if we allow government to regulate than that just gives government the opportunity to remove video, that doesn't adhear to there politics
I tend to agree, but even with the "for the sake of the kids" argument, I would argue that it's a parent's responsibility to stop their children from going on TikTok if they don't want them to. The government shouldn't be a nanny-state, literally. I hate TikTok with every fiber of my being, but that doesn't mean I want it banned, same as how I personally despise alcohol but that doesn't mean alcohol should be banned either.

As someone who played WoW, Diablo and call of duty for most of his life and primarily in their haydays and has recently fully given up on blizzard as a company, I just find this hilarious. It's Bobby's world, and we are just living in it.
To be fair I don’t think an American social media has had such a drastic affect on attention span. Every platform now pushes short form content to a level that makes the apps almost unusable. And that died off when vine did.
I agree with the current bills parameters but honestly I can't support the bill because nobody is going to maintain those parameters in the long term.

I definitely do agree with the last part of the video. If TikTok does eventually get banned in the United States under Joe Biden's watch, it will significantly hurt Democrats in the upcoming election. Although, the ban likely wouldn't happen until after the election. I've been against TikTok since its inception and your video on it a few months ago really reinforced my view on TikTok as a danger to society. Great video as always, Drift.
