I like how the 'Mind the Gap' announcement still plays even thought trains are not actually stopping! I'm going to guess that its triggered by the approach of a train.
Pointless trivia: While passing through the closed Embankment station on the Northbound Bakerloo Line if you look really closely you can see some original tiling which also contains a ripped poster for the cinema release Raiders of The Lost Ark
I wonder if there is a secret route to the cave where the lost ark is located - in the same way that many would wish there was a secret connection between the Kings Cross underground stations in London and Sydney.Perhaps both involve travelling on the 4000mph vacuum tube trains which circumnavigate this planet - but are only used by the elite.
No more 1959 stock, a few 1972mk1 stock and the 1972mk2 stock working the Bakerloo line, No more C69/C77 and D78 stock on the District and Circle lines, replaces by S7 stock.
Why are alot of the older underground trains built as 4 car units? D-Stock C-Stock 1938 Stock 1972 Stock Noticed they all appear to be designed as 4 cars, with one train cut in half and attached on one side to make a 6 car train - why so?
Actually, the D stock trains are 3 car units, C stock are 2 car units and the two tube stocks were / are a mix of 3 car and 4 car units. D stock trains mostly use 3-car units with non-driving motors at one end, with two such units making 6 car trains; however there are also some double-ended units with driving motors at each end. The same applies to the 1973 tube stock. C stock trains are 2 car units. They were designed to be able to operate as 4, 6 or 8 car trains, although in the end they always seemed to operate in 6 car format. The tube stocks tended to have a non-drivng motor at one end of the 3-car unit and a 4 car unit with driving motors at each end, making trains 7 cars in length. The 1938 tube stock trains were also intended to operate in 6 car units and 9 car units (WW2 stopped the latter) and on the Bakerloo Line also included one pre 1938 tube stock trailer. Despite being a pre-teenage schoolboy I made a point of travelling in one of these in the period just before they were withdrawn in 1972. Alas, I dont have any film footage. The 6 car units were for the Moorgate - Finsbury Pk - Highgate (high level) Alexandra Palace / High Barnet / Bushey Heath via Mill Hill East & Edgware service, but WW2 got in the way and the services were bustituted instead, with the London's transport planners and the people of North London seeming to prefer diesel buses, air pollution, traffic congestion and parkland walkways rather than clean electric trains. Hope this helps Simon
citytransportinfo I live in North London and prefer none of those things! Whenever I'm at Edgware I look in scorn at the northern tunnels and think about what could have been. Ah, the short-sighted nature of British society...
Hold on a second! At 11:10, you were on a refurbished 1995TS but how come it still has the unrefurbished door buttons and not them door indicator light thingies? Also one question, what's your all time favourite London Transport Moquette?
Oh my, favourite moquette? I am not sure I have one, although if familiarity from childhood is considered then for trains it has to be the moquette on both the 1962 tube stock and A stock (when first introduced). As for your question about the 1995 tube stock, I'm sorry but I dont know. Maybe I travelled on the first train to be fitted with this pattern, as a prototype to see if it was suitable?
Good choice, I liked the A Stock/62 Moquette, I think they were also in unrefurbished 1967/1972mk1 stocks. But vandals kept tearing these up, leading to them being replaced by some different sort of mesh under the moquette. The thought about the 1995 stock sounds about right, I imagine it must've been a experimental refurb.
Ted Glen Its a new idea intended to help passengers who did not heed travel advice about stations being temporarily closed understand why the train then non-stops the closed station. This is only used for planned engineering works and not for emergency closures for reasons such as rainstorms and flash floods making all the passageways impassible.
not yet... at the present time the S Stock trains only operate the Edgware Road - Wimbledon service and some Plaistow - Olympia specials which are really for crew-training but can be used by passengers as well. (Dateline March 2014)
That is a famous recording made by Oswald Laurence and was used in several other locations on the system. It was removed for some time at Embankment and reinstated at his widow's request. I guess that announcement serves its purpose even if you dislike it...to keep you from falling into the gap between the train and the platform.
I like these sort of videos of London's transport system.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
I was pleased to be able to make these contrasts films and even now in October 2021 have a few more to come.

I agree completely the Embankment Platform and the Bank Platform(s) are both roughly the same type of curve so should have the same announcement
I remember when Metronet (spit) when through a phase of putting Mind The Gap in at station that really did'nt need it - like Elm Park
I am pleased most of the Northern line runs on ATO, trains seem much faster.
I noticed this today - but thought that the speed boost cannot come until the entire line has been resignalled.
citytransportinfo Tom Jardine I think he means that ATO tends to be less cautious than manually driven trains!

@@CitytransportInfoplus I'm seeing this now and the way Australia connects with Westminster is triugh that one "Parliamentary exit" hmmm
The original "Mind The Gap" announcement can be only heard on Northern Line Northbound Platform.
which was made by Oswald Laurence
3:02 4:04 best trains in the world. I miss them so much.whats even special about the s stock

@MusicalElitist1Imagine responding to 5 year old comments just to be a dick. Yikes.

Iv never heard of a station called platform closed lol!

citytransportinfo i was joking, lol!
Say, are the reduced door breadths OK by passengers riding the S fleets?!
trainrover I'm sorry but do not understand what you mean.
S Stock trains mostly have wider doorways than the trains they replace.
citytransportinfo Never mind, coz the camera lens'd tricked me here.
+trainrover Front/last carriage end doors are not wide but other doors are.

Can you do Stanmore Station Contrasts?
Alas, I do not have any historic footage from Stanmore.
I have so many questions
fire 'em off.
It's a shame TfL replaces Embankment station roundels with platform closed!
A sticker over the roundel would have been better!
its now usual to do this; its been done elsewhere too!
Even with the heritage roundels??
They don't. The sign is on a hinge and can open. On the one side it has 'Embankment' And the other says 'Platform Closed'
Its the "BULLSEYE" ok....
I dont know where this word "roundel" came from, Is always been know as the Bullseye and thats what it should be.
lol mind the gap whate the train is not stopping well that was pointles
It's alright simon
I dislike the Mind the Gap announcement at 10.00... Announcer seems pissed!

Do you mind, that Peter Lodge, THE original Mind The Gap man
Maybe he does sound pissed, but thats the way we like him
