History of the London Underground
- In this video you will learn how the oldest subway in the world - the London underground - expanded. And also you will see the history of the London Overground, DLR, Croydon tram, Emirates Air line and Crossrail.
It took 710 hours to create this video. This is the most difficult of all the videos I've done. Therefore I am sincerely grateful to you for watching it, and even more grateful if you watched it from beginning to end.

Great job!! The level of detail is just amazing.
Thanks :)

@@LCIX09 WAIT, i've seen your animations, kinda cool that your watching metrocucumber
As a Londoner, I think this is a wonderful record of the development of our transport system, and also one of the most interesting UA-cam films I've ever seen. I hope UA-cam take note of items of historic interest and don't ever take them down. Congratulations to MetroCucumber.
And their ADHD
I watched Geoff Marshall’s version many times and for some reason I can still hear his voice detailing all the extensions, closures and new lines. The level of research and detail here is absolutely incredible though… hats off to you!
Same
This is seriously impressive. Being a big fan of the Underground and its history, I love this. I even call the oldest section at 0:14 “The Original Seven” or “The First Seven”. I also like how it includes the original names of existing stations before changing them to their current ones. The amount of research that must have gone into the making of this… Just… wow!
OH MY GOD! There is a feeling that this is at least one of the longest infographics on UA-cam! I hope a million views will not take long to wait!
4 days into this video and still no 10k views
@@sem49 This is an update to his original.
I think that he'll probably have to update it again when the Elizabeth line finally opens (in a couple of months?).
@Uzbek Traveller The Bakerloo line extension to Lewisham is currently on hold. And once they do start it, it will take years.
The Elizabeth line is opening in the next few months - with through trains from Reading to Shenfield by the end of the year.
@Transportriangle and now the northern can go to battersea power station.
Still at 100k. I know he'll get there!!
Someone needs to show this to Geoff Marshall. This is literally his wet dream!!! Great video!
and to Jago Hazzard & Tim Dunn
Still legendary
Finally someone made such a detailed video
Pretty incredible just how much was built before even the turn of the 20th Century
I'm glad I travelled on the DLR before Pudding Mill Lane opened. Getting up to speed between Stratford and Bow Church sitting at the front was a really great experience.
Awesome. London is a world in itself, and the rail network makes it incredibly accessible.
I love travelling in London, and it's the ease of getting around on the rail network that really pulls me in. Can't wait to get back there and continue exploring.
So much of the rest of the country doesn't know what it means to be 20 mins walk or less from a rail station, and then being able to access the entire city in an hour at speed, without getting rained on! No parking worries, and an easy trip back home. Love getting around on the tube and rail in London.
Brilliant video. One of the most fascinating things is the seemingly arbitrary re-naming of stations, particularly in the early days. Good to see that the development of London Overground, and re-invention of the East London line, is well-documented
I'm amazed at your self-control. 4 months to make one video of this level... It is very cool.
Always looked for a video as detailed as this though never found one until this came into my recommended. Thank you so much, the sheer level of effort, detail, and curing my need for a video like this is outstanding. Keep up the great work!
Well done for making such an accurate and detailed video. The quality is superb as is the animations - all super smooth! Bet you didn't think before you started how many stations have been renamed 15 times!
As a Dutchy who often visit London... I love London Public Transport ❤
I love how the London Overground just went crazy
I think a lot of it was existing track that used to be operated by national rail

I repeat: This is an awesome video!
Such an amazing video! I would like it if you update the history after the Elizabeth Line opening between Reading and Abbey Wood [Includes Southall, Paddington, Hanwell, Ealing, Maidenhead, Slough, etc.] The level of detail is absolutely fantastic! Keep up the good work MetroCucumber!
superb work. The detailed and descriptive motions of the graphic layout, colours of lines and haunting music is immersive. BEAUTIFUL!!
Nah big up to you bro/sis. The effort, the detail, the time it probably took to make that is crazy. Had to watch the whole 47 minutes and 8 seconds 🙌💯
Excellent work, completely comprehensive and a thrill to watch
The music and animations are amazing. Well done!
Excellent - The research must have been a mammoth task. Keep up the good work.
This is just incredible!!!
This is a fantastic video, but it definitely would be worth doing an update video following the completion of the Elizabeth Line and any future plans.
So much detail! Well presented too.
The Best TfL Video I’ve ever seen so far, keep up the good work 👍
An amazing and comprehensive piece of work.
This is amazing! Next can you do Seoul Metropolitan Subway?
Outstanding video and incredibly informative. Well done 👏
This is incredible. Thank you!
Wow! absolutely amazing!
This mapping is amazing, well done.
I only hope they can put more underground line in south london. Not very good to travel by tube in south london. Specially at Croydon.
Please can you show and share future tube line 2030, 2040, 2050 for south london.
I'm really impressed! What a great job!
What a beautiful video, it has a lot of works. Great job💯
Build a bit long walkway between Holborn and British Museum?
LU: 😡
Close an entire station in the tunnel and build another one just next to it?
LU: 😊
Amazing Video and Evolution! I have subscribed!
Wow! Wow! An incredible production.
The research and hard work that went into this is amazing. The dates are extremely accurate too! Particularly the renaming of certain stations.
This is a special video because of all the details and edits this person had to do.
Love this. Great to watch it build.
Awesome. What I'd like to add is distinction between building a new infrastructure vs taking over from railways. Also not everything is shown here. There were District line trains to Southend, and the Bakerloo tunnel was used by some trains of more distant destinations.
You NEED to do an updated version in a few months with TFL Rail turning purple and becoming Crossrail/the Elizabeth Line. It would have a rather nice symmetry to it, considering how the video begins with a new purple line under central London that goes east-west to Paddington. But either way, this is an absolute masterpiece!!! Geoff will have no trouble admitting it puts his version to shame.
When will Crossrail central section open?
@@user-df9iy1sn9v Around the earlier part of this year. No date has been set yet.
@@transportationuk7656 The real question is when the three sections will join up. - When the new section opens, it will initially only be Paddington to Abbey Wood - you'll have to change trains at Paddington to go to Heathrow or Reading, or at Liverpool Street to go to Shenfield.

Superb work and amazing level of detail. Can I request to also include the renaming from TFL Rail to Elizabeth line as well as incorporating the core section between Paddington and Whitechapel as well as to Abbey Wood.
Great job @MetroCucumber

Nice job. Can we have more cities like Athens Greece they are planing 8 subway lines including a circular line connecting all subway lines
Amazing👍👏

I wish you could update the TfL rail to Elizabeth line with its core section
Which Might Happen Already cause I went On an Elizabeth Line Which Connects from itself to Tfl Rail Leaving Stations in the Middle Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street, and Farringdon.

I've been a fan of Underground history for years, so I knew that the Metropolitan had extended quite far out from Central London, but this gave me a sense of the sheer distance as the line maps couldn't. Bravo.

I like this video!😀😃😃😄😁
Interesting, though the terminology used where LPTB/TfL taking over a previous BR line as "Opened" is a bit misleading. You stated that TfL took over the Trams, for example but you describe the transfer of the Liverpool Street line to Shenfield from Greater Anglia to MTL operating as TfL Rail as "opening". Odd.
When are you going to do History of London Underground to 2050
Great😎
Great job,
Translation (Перевод): Great job, thanks for the cool video.
You forgot The Silverlink 😢
But Still Great Video😊
@@user-ul5tf8ui6t From 1933, London Transport operated and owned all underground lines. Since 2003, when TfL became a thing Overground, Underground, Trams, DLR, Busses, Crossrail is all owned and managed by TFL. Most commuter services are privately owned (with the private rail in the UK) Being put back into Government ownership by 2023/24
TfL (Transport For London)
Wow! Your music just like night time.
