London Underground S Stock Contrasts, Variations, more...

- A film about the London Underground S Stock trains which looks at the two variants, aspects which they have in common and aspects by which they differ.
At the end of the film is a short section called "Historical Placement" which is about the new trains creating a new chapter in London's Railways. This focuses on how the services which are provided by S Stock trains is (or will be provided once they have been fully introduced to the District Line) interwoven with services provided by other railway operators and with the Piccadilly Line tube trains.
Greatly produced and really informative video about these new good looking trains, so to the public as to railfans, as myself! I especially liked the historical placement you did! Greetings from Greece! I definitely subscribed!
Thank you citytransportinfo. Great film work and comments. Keep up the good work🚊

Without a doubt, the S8 and S7 stock are by far the best trains on the entire London Underground and they are very reliable, comfortable and more spacious. I love travelling on them because they are my favourite trains on the London Underground. Nice One.
I bet the Pullmans on the Met Main Line would have been nicer (these also travelled to Liverpool Street, but being Pullman cars there was a supplement [ie: extra charge] to travel on them, although there was also the possibility of freshly cooked refeshments during the journey) and perhaps also the LTSR trains used on the Southend Corridor Express which was hauled by Metropolitan District Railway electric locomotives between Ealing Broadway and either Barking or East Ham, and steam locomotives to Southend-On-Sea. Alas these all stopped in 1939, because of WW2.
As for the 'today', I just wish the Metropolitan Line timetable still included off-peak fast trains and longer distance non-stop trains in the rush hours. eg: Finchley Road to Moor Park, in 19 minutes, non-stop. Uxbridge passengers probably still lament the slowing of their services as well - especially since they no longer have a choice between Underground and Mainline trains (BR closed their service).
i don't get why people think new is crap.
These dont seem very bad
One problem I have is when you are waiting at a station platform with sometimes no dot-matrix displays or non-functioning displays it's hard to tell what line the next train is serving until you get on it, at least for me being short-sighted
I like the 72 stock more
Those old metropolitan railway dreadnought coaches look like they were comfortable too
2:56 - The handsomest London transit vehicle seen yet, a deep Tuscan red similar to the Red Arrow cars of my youth.

One thing i would like with the new trains would be to make them at least vaguely disimilar. Being short sighted and being at Barbican, unless you have seen the departure board its hard to tell what train it is until you step inside. Even if the handrails where the colour of the line, but i guess its a small problem for just a few.
Ill also miss the D-Stock, its a really nice interior. I love the little private seats next to the transverse seats. I prefer to be in it than the new trains, and its only recently been refurbished. Certainly got a decade of life left in it.
Maybe the destination displays could be upgraded into multi-colour ones that displays information in the colour of the line that each train is operating on?
I didn't know that S7 Stock only has longitudinal seating... Thank you for so much information in just one video! :-)
+metr0p0Iitain yes, S7 only has longitudinal seating, even though many passengers would prefer transverse seating.
The reason why passengers are not being given what they want is because longitudinal seating leaves more space for crush-load (sardine tin) standing passengers.
@@CitytransportInfoplus I feel like there should've been a few S7 sets built with the S8 seat configuration.
Thanks for this, I learnt a lot .

Great video. ☺️
Tank you for the film, The S-Stock will take time and Thought that a S-6 sock was coming?.
whilst possibly thought of, there will not actually be an S6 train. Not unless either something dramatic happens to cause a significant reduction in passenger numbers or they are planned for a different route.
Fantastic video!!
great work mate. Keep up the good work.
for every London Underground lover
Very interesting 150 years of LU.
I love the S stock trains mainly but the others are good too
the S stock have a very good quality if ride but I still miss the older trains and their quirks
Nice sounds btw!
0:35 that truck sounds awesome
If we have underground metro like this in Lagos Nigeria, will be a very good thing
Nigeria has much wealth from oil, it would be good to see some used to build a metro system which uses trains like this!
What's funny is that Lagos took our old trains! XD
Excellent video!
the S8 stock on the metropolitan line is a bit like the Berlin S-bahn
awesome!
Very nice video
Andrew
True, but all axles are motored so In theory they should be as fast as the 2009 stock once they run on ATO.
Love your vids man
Thanks :-)
Dear Citytransportinfo. You have no idea how amazing your youtube channel and videos are. I watch them often to get both happy and depressing feelings. Why I'm get depressed you ask? I'm sadly from Sweden and I just love to travel to London because of what you can do there and having the chance to ride with the amazing underground. Sadly I may not have a possibility the next year to enter UK because of brexit and I have heard.many times that tourists from EU countries may be forced to get a valid VISA. This year I will make one last visit before brexit. Remember I will always follow you and scope your amazing videos until I fade away because I love learning something great about the history of the tube.. Keep up with the astonishing work.
i can't believe a tiny little controller can make a train go so fast by just moving it around
model railways tend to make trains run much faster than prototype speed and the trains also stop much more quickly than they can in 'real life'.
The S Stock trains would look nice in overground colours.
Too bad I don't have a great memory of the old subsurface tube stock, we've used the Central lines current stock (my favourite) most of the time. Now we use the Metropolitan a lot, and idm the new trains honestly, at least it helps with congestion :p
nice video!!
Thank you :-)
I always forget what the differences are internally between 378 and S stock. Very similar. One of them is a bit wider, perhaps?
The difference is that there's no air conditioning.
At 6:00 the D78 stock made a dramatic entrance

do s7s sometimes go on metropolitan line routes? I once got on a s-stock metropolitan line going from baker street to wembley park a year ago and i only noticed it was an s7 instead of a s8 by the lack of traverse seating and its serial number on the front
Ben Foong In the early days there are three S7+1 trains (ie: 8 car S7 trains) which for a while were used on the Met Line.
Nice one =)
the rear 2 doors will not open here please use other doors
where was that video of the unrefurbished C stock taken?
and I notice that the unrefurbished c stock sounds a lot louder than the refurbs
probably between Wimbledon and East Putney, whilst running on mainline railway tracks which also have a slightly higher voltage (that at times has been known to reach 900v - the electrics on the trains which use this route was designed to cope with this voltage).
yes, it is louder; the different camcorder explains this, I assume.
Those trains are so long! 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄

RIP to such great trains
why did I see 21567/568 On my recent London trip when it only goes up to 21566 in the books?
are they still building these?
When was your book printed? It could be that more were built after the book was printed.
btw, the entire fleet is now being adapted for full automated driving, the trains which have been modified have two black antenna on their roofs at each end of the train... they look a bit like horns!
citytransportinfo
2016!
but I have a 2017 book now and 21567 is in it.
cheers
My only gripe is the contoured front - it looked better simple and flat.
Are the Class 378s and S stocks from the same manufacturer but different families?
yes, both are from Bombardier.
The great siding in the sky 😂😂

So the S stock is replacing all the other sub-surface stocks running around the network.....?
Will they preserve the C and D stocks because the driving trailer of the A Stock is in the LTMD?
Yes, S will replace C and D stocks, although some D stock trains will be kept for "special purposes", as required by the train operators.
Whether any are preserved for nostalgic reasons remains to be seen.
grahamf19 Yes I recall reading about this, whilst it would be a great idea I am not sure that it will come to pass.
The trains would need too much expensive modification - adding toilets, making it possible to walk through from car to car (to be able to reach the toulets) and converting to either the DLR style of third rail (which might get in the way of other trains) or overhead wire power (which would require transformers and major strengthening of the car which carries the transformer).
are you going to be around to vieo the C stock april tour Simon?
Daniel, I hope to be able to see it as it passes through some stations, although I should really be involved in a domestic event on that day. So I may only be able to be around for part of the day.
Simon
citytransportinfo its just that I have made a request on District Dave as for the first time in my life I will be on this railtour so I wont be able to video it from the platform
and im asking for anyone who would be willing to let me put their video clips into a full length video of the day - this is the sort of railtour that does deserve a full length video
Daniel Woodhouse
ah, so that was you! Although not a member of DD I saw the request there. Even though tomorrow is the day of the railtour I still do not know how much time I will be able to spend watching / filming it. I've now realised that there is also an event at the London Bus Museum on the same day, which I also hoped to be able to attend - but alas will have to skip this time.
Im annoyed that they all have yellow bars, at least the S8's should have the Metropolitan line colours inside. The future Tube for London will probably be the same, I loved seeing all the individual colours for each line
+HMSDaring1
The way our eyes work means that yellow is thought to be the best colour for vision. Especially for people who do not have good eyesight.
+citytransportinfo Yes, I understand that. It still looked very good having colour coordinated bars however. Of course having black bars such as the northern line was ridiculous but other lines still should have colour coordinated bars. Perhaps the dark colours such as the Picadilly, bakerloo, should have yellow bars with the colour of the line indicated, like the current Northern line, which has the yellow bars but with a black piece to differenciate

My most favourite part about the s stock is that all trains were constructed and put into service before the Ulez and the T charge first came into force!!
RIP A/C/D STOCK!
I guess they are probably de tuned in power due to the old signalling. 1992 stock is 8 cars long and they pull away fast. S7 seems much quicker, yet again. Only rode on an s stock once! But they seem much faster, smoother than the stocks they replace.
So what is the solution that London make to make their transportation network (tube system) great?
Manila need those
Heres what I think
Sub surface trains are trains that spend most of there time above ground
And deep level trains spend most of there time below ground
electrovolt gaming 101 ah, thats a great explanation but alas its not so simple. Sub surface trains travel through tunnels just below the ground and date from the time when trains were hauled by steam locomotives whilst the deep level tube trains travel through circular tunnels which are often deep underground. These have always been electrically powered.
Both types of train can also travel on the surface / in open air.
citytransportinfo they should put those deep level trains taller my older brother had to bend his head today as we were going to Canada water
0:41 wth is the great siding in the sky

@@rabd9881 oh lol
i think you omitted the S7+1 and S8-1 which should explained in this video
I've sought advice in these. I was told that...
The three S8-1 trains were not ever used in passenger service, They were needed before S stock trains could start carrying passengers on the Hammersmith and City service as LU first needed to install stopping boards and other information displays for the train drivers. For stations with short platforms they needed the physical presence of trains to ensure the best possible solution to the issue of trains which are too long for the station platforms.
From I was told, at some stations the S Stock project has also seen sections of platform outside the areas where the trains actually stop being physically closed to passengers - whilst there is a need to prevent people walking down the ramps and on to the tracks the way this has been done also prevents passengers from using the section of platform that is beyond the train end and and being able photo the entire train during the station stop.
Nowadays these trains are no longer needed and have returned back to the factory, to become proper S8's.
As for the S7+1, these were only meant to be temporary and if they still exit now they will not for much longer. There were only a few of them, typically they were used on the Uxbridge branch which at one time was served by F stock trains which also only had longitudinal seating.
What happened to driving cab differences? That would would have been great
+ramesh shah The cabs are virtually identical. Its the passenger areas which differ.
And I thought all S-Trains are the same! 😄😄😅😅
i hope the c stock goes to train heaven

The A Stock is better than S8 but S7 is better than D and C stocks,

Wtf how did you get a WORKING LED display for the DART?!?!
Their gone.......I have been on the District Line and I haven't seen any at all
I detested those A Stock trains, they were uncomfortable bone shakers used beyond their time, I liked those S8’s for their better seating configurations over the uncomfortably dull S7’s.
Their extra width and high seating capacity gave the A stock some unique qualities, although their being bone shakers was a less appealing feature. The F stock also had solely longitudinal seating, although these were so bland at first that they had to be refurbished / made nicer before passengers really began to accept them.
1972 stock is way better than the S stock
Hello, Richmond here. How can you understand the dimensions of the carriage in terms of length.
Hello, I am sorry but I am not sure that I understand your question. Are you asking about the attributes of the cover image train? This was a special version which works on the 'time and relative dimensions in space' principle. I hope that this is the information you were seeking.
I am asking if you are an expert at understanding the length & width of the train

I think that you only saw part of the film, as the S7 trains used on the Hammersmith & City Line, Circle Line and District Line also has 7 cars.
Only the S8 trains on the Metropolitan Line have 8 cars.

Spam F if you want east london line back
F
if you look at the history you will see things differently - ever since it became a railway (rather than a foot passageway) the route below the Thames was owned by a consortia of six railways companies, two of which became part of London Transport and the other four became part of British Railways. Until the 1960's Beeching era BR goods and passenger trains regularly ran along this route.
Even today this is a very unusual route because it is still owned by TfL but operated as part of a group of services - some of which also travel on Network Rail tracks.
