I actually grew up loving this song. My father used to sing it to us whenever he put me and my 3 brothers to sleep. He may have told me but I had forgotten it was a real song until my sophomore year in college and a teacher sung it at the end of class. Although I'm happy that so many people enjoy it, I honestly posted it for myself so that I can hear it whenever I get homesick or miss my father.

My mom who was born in Italy with basically no family here in America left an abusive husband and raised five children by herself working from our home sewing. She never slept and was always working. She often says she slept about five hours a night for 20 years; however, the one show she made sure we watched together was the Carol Burnett show.Typing this brought tears to my eyes even though I still have my mom - thank you Carol as I'm so glad we had that time together.

The biggest thing about this song that breaks my heart is the realization that the day we finally lose Carol, this will be what we hear. And it will sum her up so beautifully!!!!

This song brings me back to Saturday nights in the 70's when I was a kid. It makes me think of how much has changed, how many people who were with us then that are no longer in our lives; but, I also know that the heart I had then is still the same and the things I loved and wished for may be gone, but they are not forgotten.

I'm so glad we had this time together
Just to have a laugh, or sing a song.
    Seems we just get started
    and before you know it
    Comes the time we have
    to say, 'So long.'
    There's a time you put
    aside for dreamin',
And a time for things you have to do.
But the time I like the best
    is in the evening -
I can spend a moment here with you.
    When the time comes
    that I'm feelin lonely,
And I'm feelin' ohooooo - so blue,
I just sit back and think of you, only,
And the happiness still comes through.
    That's why I'm glad we
    had this time together,
'Cause it makes me feel that I belong.
    Seems we just get started
    and before you know it
Guess it’s time for me to say
    ‘So long.'

Like many folks here, it brings back memories of growing up. My mom and dad loved this show.
Being the teenager I was, I typically thought the CB Show had some hip moments and, perhaps, I admit now that CB's old school style of comedy may seem dated along with the jokes but I love the theme song and I'm surprised more Jazz musicians haven't covered this song.
I would have loved to hear what Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass as duet would have done with this song but I'll have to settle for Tuck and Patti instead! :)

What ever happened to shows like this. Carol Burnett, Abbot and Costello, etc. They were actually funny. Now it's all about being foul mouthed. They say something profane and people laugh. There isn't even anything funny.

    • @burtshoobs1033
      @burtshoobs1033 2 роки тому

Not only profane, but also incorporating sexual innuendos as well. Add that to the already weakened state of writing known as "Political Correctness", and you now have the toxic compound called "Today's Comedy". Quite tragic.

People whom I've known FOR YEARS, and have developed such sweet, and deep bonds, that it boggles my mind HOW CLOSE we can be emotionally...yet physically? be nowhere near one another's zip code (or even country). I love these people, and they love me. So whenever I get to speak on the phone with any of the? THIS song truly embodies EXACTLY how I feel about them. I grew up around my great grandma; and all my great aunts, and uncles, and they all sang. We just lost one of our family members, and I’m so heart broken. Watching this, makes me think of them, cause my granny would always watch her.😢 I’m really an adult now! WOW!

I was 17 when this aired. It was SO SAD that it was OVER. This was before the Internet. When a show ended, you NEVER expected to see it again. This was part of the end of my childhood.

This is a beautiful song and it belongs with Bob Hope's "Thanks for the Memories". In the old 45 record days, those 2 could have been back-to-back. Thank you for posting this.

This take of Carol Burnett's classic song is So MUCH better than the vision hammed up by the overrated, young "star" weeks ago. The best part of that version, was Carol ending the song.

It was sad day in 1978 when the Carol Burnett show ending after 11 seasons on CBS. On the final show called An Evening With Carol Burnett. Her ending song brings tears to everybody's eyes. A good farewell song to use when one is moving to a new location to live and moving on to a better job. Also use as retirement.

“I’m so glad we had this time together, just to have a laugh or sing a song.
Seems we just get started and before you know it, comes the time we have to say So Long.
There’s a time you put aside for dreaming, and a time for things you have to do, but the time I like the best is any evening I can spend a moment here with you.
When the time comes and I’m feeling lonely and I'm feeling oh so blue,
I just sit back and think of you and me
and the happiness still comes through.
That’s why I’m ... glad we had this time together ‘cause it makes me feel that I belong.
Seems we just get started and before you know it, guess it’s time for me to say So Long. “

Saw this song sung tonight on the MeTv network. Was just checking to see if this indeed was the final song. This TV show was an integral part of my youth. My parents , especially my father loved her.
Your show is so missed. Good times.

This was a show I was always had to go to bed when my mother watched it.
I remember her as the BEST Ms. Hannigan I have ever seen.
But the show still comes on nightly, on weeknights.
But I never heard the first verse until watching on Tubi.
This entire song just makes me want to cry for some reason.

I used to sing a tailored version of the introductory verses of Carol's good night song to my daughter each night at bedtime when she was with me. Those were special bonding moments that live in our memories to this day. Thank you, Carol!
