I agree, the key is to focus on what must be done every day - dishes, wiping counter tops in kitchen and bathroom, vacuuming (cause I got a cat that sheds like CRAZY!) and little pick ups. Doing this will keep your house in decent shape. And like you said, picking a room to focus on every week will also keep it deeply cleaned and organized.

Love these tips! This list simplifies it soo much. I tend to complicate things when it comes to cleaning and get overwhelmed. But your so right there is no magical system. No system is going to do. I have to get up and just do it. And this will help. Thanks!

I am so grateful for this video and the routine list you provided. I started doing this routine a while ago and it is the first one I've been able to stick to. It works great especially when you have an unpredictable schedule and it's realistic. My house seems cleaner and I feel like I do less for some reason. Can't say thank you enough!😊

Kathryn, since it's still cold & flu season, I wanted to share my secret $2.00 weapon. I went to your favorite store Dollar Tree and bought a plastic spray bottle and a bottle of rubbing alcohol. I just spray all the usual perpetrators--door knobs, toilet handle, telephone (spray alcohol on paper towel of course), wipe, and voila! Instead of spending $5 or more for Lysol, this is exactly the same as what we sanitize our hands with. If a person is running a daycare or medical facility of any sort, of course you still need the Lysol. But for the average cooties creeping around from little sneezes, the alcohol works great. Plus, it's creating less waste since the spray bottle is reusable, not to mention the harmful effects of aerosols flying around your house all day.

Finally someone thinks like how I do, and you are way better so I am motivated! Thank you! I clean my bathroom + toilet everyday after I take shower using a thick microfibre cloth, and kitchen, and laundry and put away clothes every day. My grandma used to sweep clean entrance area every day too, but I do it as a part of weekly clean. Now I am going to do rotating deep cleaning per zone like you! This will make me feel much more accomplished than everything is half cleaned everyday. Great video!

You might add that everything needs to have a place to be put away. I think it might be obvious to some but not to others. I know you do this based on your other videos. It makes cleaning so much faster if everything can be put in it's specified place. It's a lesson some people never learn too.

Great video! I am an organized person and love lists, but every time I try to start one of those "Cleaning Schedule Checklist" I just end up falling behind and then stressing myself out. I like your approach because you have a week to focus on a room or area instead of a day (plus I don't need little checkboxes to tell me what in the room I need to clean). I already do the daily pick up so this should work well for me. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

For the past year or so we've been using a daily checklist system. It works well sometimes, but like you said, we fall behind all the time because life happens! I've been getting frustrated with our checklist and was going to revamp it for 2014, but I much prefer the idea of having some daily "zones" and then cleaning the rest of the house throughout the month. Such a good idea!

Great video! :) This is the same idea as what I do and it works great - daily I take care of the kitchens & bathrooms too, playroom is picked up every night. I find that I tend to do specific chores on certain days of the week(a certain person's laundry on certain days, etc.) so that works well with our overall schedule because some days we have more time on some days than others because of preschooler activities, lol... I totally hear the laundry every day!! :)

This is a great plan that stops "Crisis Cleaning". Basically your space is ALWAYS neat and ready for viewing. I figured some of this out on my own but I like the "rotating" zones! hi Catherine, one question re vacuuming and washing your floors, do you do the whole house tog or just the rooms that you are dong that week? so if you are doing the nursery do you just vacumn the nursery, or the kitchen just wash the floors in the kitchen ? as I was thinking if I had the mop and water or vacumn out wouldnt it be tempting to just do the all the floors or wet areas and not just that one room, just wanted to clarify this as I really like your system. thanks! xx

I agree that writing down your routine and posting it somewhere is SO helpful and makes it more likely that I'll stick to the routine. And, I couldn't agree more with the daily laundry! We have a dog so we have to do the vacuuming on a weekly basis - but I break it up over 3 days (one floor per day). I also have to add the following to the list, otherwise I'll forget: watering plants (MWF), empty diaper genie (MF). Plus my monthly stuff (change kitchen sponge, filing/shredding).

    • @DoItOnaDime

Something that's been working for me is to use Toodledoo which allows u to split up your to do list into contexts. That way, when my kids are content in a certain part of the house, I can pull out my phone and see what I need to do in that area. For me, that works better than trying to schedule a zone based on a time routine. When I check off an item like dusting a particular room, it doesn't come back on my list for say 3 weeks so I don't overdo it. I also use contexts for my moods. If I'm feeling down, I won't want to vacuum, but I could fold laundry. I'm trying to work better within the chaotic flow of my life instead of trying to structure the chaos. Just another idea! :-)

Cleaning sucks ur right. But it sucks even more to be overwhelmed with the mess.. Procrastinate, then try to do everything in one day.. Leaving the whole house 1/2 done bc u just don't have the energy to finish. One or two rooms at a time works great... Also assign your children to help. Mine are 3 and 6. They help in the same room I'm cleaning for that day. They fight over the feather duster and vaccume. LOL
