This video shows a cool perspective, fate will always lead to war with the machines, but thanks to the choices made by the heroes, the war can be won. That is the only successful option. War is inevitable, but turns out it wasn't the end of the world after all, even though it was pretty close.
Due to revisiting past story elements of what happens in the future with these scenes we get a glimpse of how things may have looked in the original timeline. Yes, the movies after Terminator 2 are bad, but it's cool to see these offscreen moments never seen before. We get to see the Time Displacement Equipment being used on screen in Genisys which has never seen before. Even though that movie is bad it's still cool to see how Kyle Reese and the Terminator used it in the original movie.

IF the circumstances had been explained properly in the second, it may have been possible. Kid John starts out like a troublemaking kid, but later in the movie becomes more leader like as he needs to be in the future. The war was not stopped in T1 destroying the Terminator didn't stop it, but actually helped it. A big story detail in T2 is the factory in T1 belongs to Cyberdyne Systems. After Sarah was rescued what's left of the smashed Terminator is it's arm and part of the chip. They are using them in T2 in their research. With the help of the Terminator reprogramed by future John due to it being able to detect the T-1000 and survive it's attacks better then a human, is easy to fool with the shapeshifting. They destroy Cyberdyne and stop the future war. The movie ends with Sarah finally getting that peace she wanted. Every movie after Terminator 2 has the issues in your comment.

I always thought the original timeline would be a timeline with no self aware sky net/future war or John Connor. In my opinion I think the timeline changed once skynet becomes self aware, which leads to the future war and eventually the time machine that ends up creating the leader of the resistance John Connor. What if John Connors existence is simply due to being an unintentional by product of Skynet. As long as there’s a timeline with a self aware/Future war, there’s always gonna be a John Connor that ends up existing, due to skynet/future war happening.
