Something like 4 years ago, i met an Irish customer at my work place in South Italy (i'm Italian). He said he was from Derry, and i said "oh, there's a great band in your city, The Undertones, i love them". He was SO happy and surprised to see an Undertones fan in a remote city in South Italy, we talked in broken English about bands and music for almost an hour. One of my best memories.
The Italians and the Irish, so similar. All love their mums, family orientated, love food, big show offs (the boys!), very gorgeous (the girls), like to talk a lot. Yes. Interchangeable the Irish and the Italians. Love them all.
The game of football was invented in tenth century ireland!, it began as two warring families locked in a dispute over the ownership of a turnip, every year since, the battle was re enacted, using the severed head of enemies,..rather than the blatantly extravagant waste of a good turnip!😂

Tears are dripping down my face, I had him back with me for last few minutes. I love you so much brother. We argued and laughed now your in heaven looking after me. So so sore but I will be fine guys.
i'm a Derry boy and saw them live many times in the Casbah Club which was little more than a portacabin. One night people were dancing on the roof and fell through it so the Untertones literally brought the house down.
True fact. His beloved Liverpool were playing in the League Cup at Millwall on the day of his death and the announcer at The Den played it by way of a tribute to the man affectionately known as King John.
I remember taping it off the radio. My mum used to let me stay up to listen to John Peel's Rockpile. Dad would smuggle me into some gigs, too. I was lucky to have parents who actively encouraged me to listen to punk, as well as to 50s and 60s stuff, and classical music, too.
I was brought here today by pure and utter shock, I just found out that One Direction’s One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks) is two songs blended together. I don’t know how completely and utterly stupid little 12 year old me was. I’m going to need 5-10 business days.

One of my all time favourite tracks. Was still "almost" a teenager, when it first came out. It still makes me feel like one every time I hear it. It's a great track, timeless. Saw them play at the free concert at Vondel (?)Park in Rotterdam. We flew in especially for the festival, they had so many great British bands & singers in the line up, all for free !
Track is about the excitement and enthusiasm of adolescent love. It is about experiencing the intensity of first love and infatuation. It captures the feelings of longing, desire, and energy that come with being a teenager. The song is a celebration of innocent teenage love and the emotions associated with it. The chorus refers to the desire to keep the excitement of teenage love alive and to enjoy it for as long as possible. The song reflects on the joy of young love and encourages everyone to embrace it and cherish the moments of teenage bliss.

I can understand what you´re saying but if you listen closer (maybe with headphones) you will notice it is actually the hi-hats. And he does go to the ride for a little short period by the end of the song. I know it´s subtle but it´s there. My best guess is that the drumsticks could be with nylon tips which helped with that sound being very similar to a ride cymbal or even just a regular but kinda heavy wood tip drumstick. I used to play this with by Tribute band and YES it is one of the greatest songs ever!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!

Saw them live last night in Copenhagen. Even without Fergal Sharkey, it was a great performance! Hugh Cornwell was warming up to the show! Cool night of old school punk rock! 😁
Bought a copy the day after John Peel (RIP) first played this (twice, because it was so good) on his evening radio show. I still listen to the Undertones when I need to be cheered up, forty something years later.
Get tae fuck. There are NO better versions of this song. Many have tried, many have failed. This is the most perfect 3 minutes of post-punk guitar sound, bar none. If you do not concur, cut your ears off, you have no use for them.
Feargal Sharkey is a musical hero. I saw the Undertones play live years ago. Much love from Germany, and Feargal, your environmental efforts are amazin. Thank you!
Hard to believe this song was recorded back in 1978 !! It just sounds so fresh. No band today gets anywhere near this level of pure rebellious excitement - and the delightful spontaneity of teenage youth. I once had a discussion with the bassist (when playing with That Petrol Emotion in Manchester) about his Edie Segwick T-shirt he wore on stage - and where he got it - Camden Market btw. Lovely guy. Very approachable. Good memory.
There are great songs. Then there are songs so great they affect you at a molecular level... I'd seen Pretty Vacant on TOTP, changed my life as a kid. Then this came out. First band I saw live (Undertones, Birmingham Odeon), brilliant.
It’s the greatest youth record of all time. Find me three minutes better of teenage unknowing and youthful magic summed up in a record. John knew. It’s a masterpiece. There has been nothing come close ever since.
I was 13 when this song released, god I feel so old, I remember loving this song when I was younger, now my 2nd youngest daughter has gotten into punk, it's reminded me of myself.
So much for these so called great recording companies who cannot see talent when it's presented to them . Probably from their background and being DERRY boys . The Undertones gave them the middle finger with great thanks and appreciation to John Peel .
Godamn I just got into these guys a week ago and I've been devouring everything I can on youtube. It's so energetic and screams so much of adolescence that it's almost heartbreaking it to be only discovering this as an approaching middle age man. I should have been jamming out to this in my youth, living by this, man is it good.
What really makes them one of the greatest bands is that they wrote these light hearted, funny and great songs during the troubles and it really helped a lot of people.
Callie1m1Price I've been thinking about it more, and now I'm kind of glad that I only recently discovered these guys. It's great to listen to music that makes me feel eighteen again without it being some kind of personal nostalgia trip. Although I would have loved to have seen them in their heyday! There's a lady from Ireland in my night class, she saw them a bunch of times in her youth, it was fun to be able to talk about it with her as a new fan.
46 years ago today, October 21, 1978, 𝕋𝕖𝕖𝕟𝕒𝕘𝕖 𝕂𝕚𝕔𝕜𝕤 burst onto the scene and became an anthem for youth and rebellion. Its raw energy and unforgettable chorus still hit hard today, capturing the spirit of teenage love and freedom.
First heard this song in 2005 when I was aged 17, assumed from the sound it was from the early '90s or maybe late '80s. Found out just now it was actually 1978. Talk about timeless. Incredible.
Saw them live again last night at the Apex,Bury St Edmunds. Always brilliant as usual. The least pretentious of people too. Drummer Billy Doherty was a real gentleman in accomodating myself, my wife and friend to a pre-gig chat and photos. Hats off also to Mr John O'Neill for writing surely the greatest anthem of our time.

There are great songs. Then there are songs so great they affect you at a molecular level... I'd seen Pretty Vacant on TOTP, changed my life as a kid. Then this came out. First band I saw live (Undertones, Birmingham Odeon), brilliant.
The people who vote at that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, need to listen to this song on repeat until they remember what Rock is.
So true best pop song ever
The best post punk band and song..🏴
It’s the greatest youth record of all time.
Find me three minutes better of teenage unknowing and youthful magic summed up in a record.
John knew. It’s a masterpiece. There has been nothing come close ever since.
One of the best pop songs ever written. It's perfect.
and a bit of punk, to be honest ;-)
One of the best ten songs ever, no argument.
Bring back these days please xx
I was 13 when this song released, god I feel so old, I remember loving this song when I was younger, now my 2nd youngest daughter has gotten into punk, it's reminded me of myself.
So much for these so called great recording companies who cannot see talent when it's presented to them . Probably from their background and being DERRY boys . The Undertones gave them the middle finger with great thanks and appreciation to John Peel .
These guys are good!
I really like the attitude meets Phil Spector vibe!!!
One of the most underrated band of all time
Those guitars pure perfection from start to finish.🎸👌
I love this song so much. Top ten all time favourite. Great memories of special friends, John Peel and being a teenager. ❤
I have been listening to these guys science I was in diapers, my dad loved them, I am sorry you have missed them for most of your life
What really makes them one of the greatest bands is that they wrote these light hearted, funny and great songs during the troubles and it really helped a lot of people.
Sonicsnout Just discovered them and I'm 21 so I'll do just that :)
Sonicsnout d
As a kid listening to John peel sessions at night he played it once and said that was so good we are going to listen to it again
The perfect single !
First heard this song in 2005 when I was aged 17, assumed from the sound it was from the early '90s or maybe late '80s. Found out just now it was actually 1978. Talk about timeless. Incredible.
Drums, bass and 2 guitars playing rhythm over each other.. genius!
Do they ever come to the U.S? I'd love to see them!!
