I think the reason these songs aren't hitting hard anymore is because Cory had legit hate when he recorded Iowa and I think he's let a lot of that go and it shows in his vocals. It seems as though he can't channel that anger anymore

Although I find some merit to this opinion, perhaps that's just the artwork's context seeping into your perception. Like, imo, the musicianship is perhaps better than ever for new slipknot, but once a band does a certain style for such a long time, the shock value that self titled and Iowa had just inevitably fade.

They’re definitely pushing in a new direction. With Corey’s cleans I like them some of the time but I definitely agree with you on how it’s used a little too much. Jim Root was also talking about how he felt this album wasn’t as good as they could’ve made it because of covid restrictions on the song writing process. He described it as messy because of this which you can definitely hear in the songs. It doesn’t feel as tight as We Are Not Your Kind felt

I would call myself a diehard Slipknot fan, and I agree. From what members (mainly Jim and Corey) have said in various interviews as well as Corey's Reddit AMA conducted around the time of The End, So Far's release, that it isn't an album representative of the band's A game. The band was constantly getting fucked by Roadrunner in regards to when they wanted the album out. At first, they wanted the band to take their time (as Slipknot usually does), but then Roadrunner wanted the band to crank the album out as quick as they could. This prompted the band to book a ton of studio time to record what songs they had finished writing, but then Roadrunner told them to take their time again, further delaying recording and releasing the album of unpolished and roughly arranged songs that could have been tightened up, polished, and given the once over by the band to make them sound as entertaining, unique, and as kick-ass as we all know they can be. The End, So Far is a very good album and is not bad by any measure. It just isn't the wall-to-wall masterpiece that We Are Not Your Kind is.

Comes across as a bit disjointed and safe at times but still an enjoyable record. WANYK was melodically creative and texturally rich in ways that they never really explored on their other records. I can see it being a grower on people. Its like any album with diverse songs that are not what you initially expect or perhaps want. Albums in general can take time to grow, adapt to ya as time, experience goes on. I love it when , even after the first few days an album isnt hitting you, but then without trying to like it, it just moves into view and life more.
I like the clean vocals, as they remind me a tad of the Grunge era, which is where I started waaay back.😅😅🤘 This album will defo polarise people and maybe thats a good ting. I think that if it was all balls out blastorama, youd still get people saying "Nah, theyre trying too hard to sound like Iowa".😅 It mite not be what everyone wants but at least too, its not what everyone predicts.

I'm on board with you Drew, I appreciate them trying to take it a different direction but I don't think it fits Corey. I was a huge fan of We Are Not Your Kind and I was pumped to see them keep heading in that direction, especially with the early drops from the album. When I heard Adderall as the opening track I got super nervous and felt a little let down. Corey is an absolute legend but something about his cleans definitely feel off with me this album, which is strange because he had great cleans on their previous album in songs like Unsainted and Not Long For This World.
Dying Song, Chapeltown and Yen are solid, but as you keep progress through the album it seems to me the songs become less memorable. Maybe that will change with more listens but I don't feel myself getting drawn back to it. If you look at the album on Spotify, each song has progressively less and less streams, which leads me to believe most other listeners feel the same.
As much as I hate to admit it, I'm leaning toward team cringe on this one. I HOPE that changes but that's my current feelings!

    • @camdenhochgesang6554

I think Adderall is the only song that really connected with me. I didn’t have any hope from the singles. Chapeltown Rag is in the running for one of the worst Slipknot songs to me. The lyrics are awfully written IMO. Power to those to really like this album. Since it’s Slipknot I wish I could feel the same. But major letdown after WANYK.
Hearing the way Jim Root and Clown described the process of making this album really makes sense. Unpolished, rushed, and lacking a creative direction, mostly due to Covid restrictions. When the artists themselves don’t feel great about it, it’s definitely a recipe for a product that’s lacking.

Iv'e always appreciated their more experimental side as it adds a nice, somewhat twisted side to the usual barrage of attacking riffs. With this, Im enjoying and involving myself more into the alternative, tangent throwing tracks. Acidic, Yen, De Sade and especially Finale are bloody fecking good songs. They've got interesting passages of music and cool ideas twirling around and keeping me involved.
I think the more standard Slipknot songs work here too, even if they sound a bit by the numbers initially. But again, people will prolly want more of that.
Those that want Iowa revisited will be dissapointed, but they've been there, done that regarding that extremity. I thought We are not yer Kind was their best album meself.
Great comments and ongoing analysis as the music went on.

The strength of WANYK was that it was a cohesive whole. One song flowed into the next and each song played a role. That made up for some of the weaker tracks. This album just feels like a bunch of disconnected songs. Which is fine in theory but just doesn’t work. My general reaction to this album is “ehh.” No tracks that really stand out to me. And definitely forcing the clean vocals at this point.

I think exactly the opossite lol WANYK didn't have a cohesive estructure for me, specially bc of those strange bridge songs and the fact that they mixed clean with screams in a more "common" way. On the other hand, TESF does have that flow between songs that you can actually hear and think about how they progress, specially with those clean vocal songs(Dunoo why you are saying they feel forced, I think they sound pretty well placed this time since they built the songs around them, like in the first Slipknot albums).
That being said, I do enjoy WANYK more that TESF and I Agree that this album doesn't really have a song that stands out tooo much (I mean, yeah they have the singles that are pretty good, and H377 or De Sade/Finale are really good songs that are going to be remembered well in the future, but they don't have a Solway Firth or Nero Forte or A Liar's Funeral).

I think this is their worst output to date, and i've been feeling like this since "dying song" dropped. This album feels like a compilation of ideas that no one bothered to polish at all, the mix is absolute garbage, guitar solos on this album just sounds funny to me.
But because of the fact, that this is their last "roadrunner era" album, im curious what they're going to come up with next time, 'couse if this wasn't just a "last glimpse of slipknot we all now" then i don't think that this band gonna put out something worthy listening.
Really hope that they're going into completely different direction then just continue to copy paste their old stuff. Intro and outro tracks are bangers tho

Honestly I'm just tired of Slipknot sounding like metal musical theater lol. When I got into Slipknot, they weren't as theatrical as they are today. Yes they've always had masks but I always felt like they served a purpose and those purposes being to envoke fear, disturb, disgust and expressing anger in a artistic manner.
Nothing about recent Slipknot has the emotional impact I get when I listen to All Hope Is Gone, Iowa, Self Titled, Vol. 3 and .5: The Gray Chapter.

With all due respect to Slipknot, they went from an aggressive, creepy, and disturbing metal band with music that portrayed a sense of anger and melancholy, to a band that isn't even remotely creepy anymore and is basically a pop metal act at this point.
Another downside to me is that it's felt more about the theatrics recently and less about the music. I'm sure a lot of that is influenced by Clown.

personally, i loved it after several listens. and now ive been putting chapters together out of the songs as to what he may be writing about. in an interview awhile back, CT said now that he got some things off of his chest with wanyk, he wanted to approach this one by trying to write from other ppls perspectives. i think that Adderall, Dying Song, Chapeltown and Yen all tell one part of the story on their own. and there are likely two other chapters told through the other 8 songs, in a way. this may or may not have anything to do with it, but Clowns one daughter died a while back during the wanyk cycle and i dont think we ever heard how and part of me wonders if he maybe lowkey made the story of the first 4 songs possibly talk about what she might have been going through and how they are all processing it now. idk. ideas.

Outside of that, I can't stand his vocals. There are tracks where he's kicking major ass but just can't help himself and throws in those Stone Sour stadium pop vocals, and it just kills the vibe of the song. It actively makes me angry listening to this album because it has the potential to be great. The instrumentals are awesome in most songs, but his cleans fucking ruin it. However, musicians evolve, get bored, and like experimenting because its fun. Im a massive fan of more experimental songs like vermillion, til we die, and adderall. However, there's fans that say "thats not slipknot" purely because the songs are better constructed than they used to be and arent complete chaos the whole time. Im not saying that that's your sentiment, because it didn't seem like you came across like that. Anyways, 8.5-9/10 album for me, i vibed thoroughly

I actually really like the more atypical (for them) sounding songs. Sounds like they were actually playing what they felt like playing. But most of the “heavy” songs are paint-by-numbers post Paul and Joey Slipknot that we’ve been hearing for years now. It sounds try hard and just like they’re trying to maintain a brand. Also, why do they insist on over-producing Corey’s clean vocals all to hell? He’s a great singer and doesn’t need that, it just sounds sterile and boring. Clean parts in Slipknot songs didn’t use to sound like that. But, whatever. I liked half the album. Also, I think you’re spot on about Corey being a bit out of touch, he writes some really cringey lyrics at this point. Actually, he wrote some bad lyrics back in the day as well but it worked better with their vibe back then. But now it mostly just feels like something he should’ve grown out of by now.

But a lot of (Not all, again), but a lot of the lyrics from him that I’ve heard in the past couple years just haven’t really done it for me, and especially on a song like Chapeltown Rag that just kinda sound lame to me. And as far as back in the day goes, there were some lyrics off of self titled and Iowa that straight up sounded like and angry middle schooler scribbling in a notebook. Again though, it worked with the vibe they had at the time and I still love those songs.

I think it's the emotion. Slipknot's older music ranged from several topics. Topics such as the music industry, necrophilia, abuse, politics, war, grief, getting into the mind of a serial killer, depression, suicide and a whole bunch of other messed up topics. All which gave a sense of fear, chaos, insanity, melancholy and rage.
We Are Not Your Kind is simply about one thing. Corey's divorce from Stephanie Luby which he shares a daughter with btw so that makes the whole thing not only petty but morally fucked on top of that. Mainly since it puts pressure on his child who he apparently hardly sees. Take of that what you will.
With The End So Far, there's nothing here and it feels like a filler album. There's no anger, no sadness etc. Yeah sure there's a bit of commentary on about how social media is dividing us and how the media distorts the truth but those ideas have been tackled in metal constantly for the past couple of years. Disturbed and Five Finger Death Punch were touching on those subjects prior to this album's release. It's not necessarily a new or original idea in terms of song writing.
