I love slipknot. But come on. There was too much time and energy put into making this album that they just “slapped it together” and served it up like it’s a quarter pounder from McDonald’s or something like that. The band got together, wrote an entire album worth of music, recorded all of the individual instruments and samples that make up most of the soundscape for the album, and all of this after many many hours of rehearsal, editing, and everything else. Idk. I didn’t get the vibe that they just put an album together after waking up one morning because they had to, I got the vibe that this is what they genuinely had to offer musically and creatively as a band, which just makes me glad that this is hopefully their last album for a while.

Thank you for the topic, I love talking about this. Slipknot still is and has been my favorite band since 1999. Some critics are saying, “fans who don’t like this album are close minded or aren’t open to change”. I don’t agree. I am open minded and don’t mind a band trying something different, I just didn’t find this album enjoyable. It just didn’t feel like the band was that into it. I would argue the album wasn’t that different from their brand (or at least half the songs weren’t and those were the least enjoyable songs for me). I think parts were good but overall, fell way short. Yen probably was the closest to their sound and was a really good song. I think Corey had his heart more in the non traditional Slipknot songs and the other songs seemed like, hey guys, we’re Slipknot, we need to make some Slipknot songs too. The singles weren’t bad but they didn’t quite get there for me, I talk more about this on my channel but still have nothing but respect for this band!🙌 This band has helped me through many periods throughout my life. Roadrunner was great when they were an indie label, and so many metal bands owed so much to them. An argument can even be made that metal wouldn't have resurfaced the way that it did had it not been for Roadrunner consistently signing and publishing metal bands in the 90s. It's their experimental album. Every band has it eventually. The key thing for most bands/artists is what comes from that in the followup. I think 5. The Gray Chapter does more different styles then most Slipknot albums:
Sarcastrophe is a death metal song, Approaching Original Violence, Skeptic and The Negatice One are thrash metal songs, The Devil In I is a groove metal song, Killpop is gothic metal // so far the metal songs: XIX is an emo song, Goodbye is a hard rock song and the other 6 songs are rock songs. It's the only album without one nu metal song.
      --> But it's godawful album.
Slipknot are best when they stick to their old formula of their debut and Iowa (which are imo rather alike).
On this The End, So Far LP I think all the songs hunker back to their old style (like all the WANYK songs, except Solway Firth, which is more death metal inspired). BUT for some reason it's not good here! The songs are just not their best... this album sucks even more than 5. The Gray Chapter.

Slipknot is basically the band with Gorillaz to get me through my worst and best times. I found and still find enjoyment in all of their material. I listend only to it once and basically all the songs on the album landed on some playlist of mine, wether it be the metal, rock or even sad music playlist. I just loved the all around appeal of the album and it was something totally different to my ears then any other album. The only real gripes I have is that you have 2 super hardcore bangers and the rest just kind of exists. Still good but it just doesn’t stick like, for example, we are not your kind, wich had me playing red flag for 3 months. Also I felt some of the parts were just kind of ripped of from we are not your kind too. Like some Bridges sound eerily similar. Still in my eyes a great album

Confusing is about the perfect word for it. I don't get how anyone in the band could've actually thought they were putting together a good album. The last album before this one was weak too, but still better than this. This album completes their contractual obligation to Roadrunner, and they've been very vocal the past few years of their dissatisfaction with the label; so Im hoping they deliberately dropped a turd as a final "fuck you" to them. That's what Im hoping for anyway. Im really hoping they aren't seriously moving in this direction.

i'll admit i'm a newer slipknot fan but i absolutely love their older albums and i come back their self-titled album, iowa, and vol 3 the most. but i also really enjoy wanyk and the end, so far for changing things up and bringing new things to the table. i understand why people don't like it, they want classic slipknot and heavy stuff that doesn't push the envelope very much. and i respect that! but i admire their willingness to be a bit more experimental, whether it's for the better or for the worse. honestly i love every album slipknot has put out and none really stand out to me as being especially "meh" except for maybe all hope is gone, but even at its weakest it's still listenable. but with all this being said i might be very biased because i found slipknot at a point where their music just clicked with me for some reason and continues to be something i really enjoy. i may also fall into a weird category because i'm not particularly picky about what i listen to and i'm not really into genre policing and trying to be elitist about when metal is still metal or when a band "falls off" just because their sound changed and people think they should quit.

A recurring theme with this album is Corey's vocals completely taking me out of the track. Yes, I get it, his vocals have gotten far stronger ever since he quit smoking and it shows in his performances both on the albums and live, however there's too many moments on this record where the choruses just feel too forced. Like they're just shoved in there for Corey to kinda jerk himself off with his clean singing.
Slipknot can do clean well, 100%, but a lot of the transitions on this record just don't feel natural. The Chapeltown Rag is the best example of this, we're treated to these monstrous vocals layered on top of some really killer blast beats, only for the track to come to a screeching halt so it can give us a really out of place chorus that sounds like it's from a completely different track. Which really hurts, because instrumentally Slipknot is still absolutely slaying, Jim and Mick have aged like fine wine, but lately Corey's vocals have been pretty heads or tails on whether or not they're going to deliver, or completely halt the track's momentum.

Yeah I agree honestly. WANYK was a great album but TESF kinda was a step up in some parts. In one sense, WANYK definitely has a couple goofs, like spiders, as well as the overabundance of intermissions, and while other than spiders I thought out of the REAL songs (yes even my pain) there weren’t any necessarily bad songs, but ones like red flag, critical darling, etc are kinda forgettable. They slap when you listen to them, but I easily forget they exist. Then you got TESF, which imo stepped up that experimental aspect on a better level, instead of overusing interludes and over relying on Craig and Sid, we got some really neat sounds, acidic was like a bluesy metal mix, the opera sounds were an awesome addition too which I felt really bring the record together in a consistent way, yen was also a standout in terms of experimental. I will say tho then you got songs like heirloom which yet again isn’t a bad song it just isn’t that good, honestly just heirloom tho, it doesn’t even sound like slipknot at all, it’s just a stone sour song and not even their best. Ngl i really liked the slower songs like yen, but i think of them more as singles because only some of the songs are good. There isnt enough to remember. I think its too hated but i understand not loving it.

Am I the only one that thought Adderall sounded like some reject slow QOTSA song, it really reminded me of one of theirs

Nope! To me is a QOTSA with NIN mix kind of thing.

I appreciate this breakdown. My favorite band...but I struggled with my first impressions of the album.

New Slipknot album is pretty decent Nothing too ground breaking but for me its better than their last album. It has more of a unique and spiritual motivation behind it as it feels and branches off elements from Vol.3 and WANYK which is more than welcome
definitely a 7 far from a bad album too

I totally get what you mean here.
I thought it was a fairly good album overall, but at the same time I’m not sure I’ll be coming back to it.
I thought Apple Music was glitching out when Adderall came on. I thought it must have mixed them up with another band.
We’re also have a review coming out on Monday for this!

I loved Adderall, thought it was one of the best tracks on the album. Wish we’d hear more like this.

this has been the only new album I've liked by slipknot since all hope is gone. i thought adderall was good. it sounds like a yoko kanno composition on that and one other song. but i really hate how people are still upset slipknot haven't made iowa.2 obsessed with the thought of slipknot as the iowa engine.
