A detail that no one talks about: the Pharaoh really loves Moses, despite the fact that he is an adopted son
But wasn’t Moses raised by his biological mother (I forgot her name) in the original bible exodus story?
The Black Sun honey, I'm talking about the movie not about the real story
Dana Dar oh, ok I just thought the movie was completely accurate to the biblical story.
The Black Sun no, it wasn't. There's a lot of things that weren't following the bible
@@gijoe820 yes but she never revealed to him that she was his mother she was kinda like a nanny
The prince of Egypt is arguably one of the most visually stunning animations ever
Facts
I’m still freaking out over how fluid the animation is
Moses is a *coughcough* snack in this movie
It really is marvelous, and oddly better than most live action portrayals
And a dope sound track!
I love how they didn't make the Pharaoh a evil cartoon villain. He is a real, flawed person with feelings and thoughts behind his actions
You mean...like everyone else
Hussain Ahmad
Exactly! XD I really don't think he's a good "villain"
@@annalkitb5370 well it makes sense. the pharaoh is a human who makes horrible decisions. other disney villains are supernatural monsters.
One Pump Man
Haha no that's definitely *absolutely nonsense* ! Almost all Disney villains have understandable reasons why they became "evil",but you don't notice that in the movies (of course) because the movies aren't about the villains (they aren't the main characters) and the reason why they became the way we know them is often in their past/childhood ...
But there are enough books about it, for example Scar's past:
"A tale of two brothers" and Ursula's past:
"A tale of a sea witch".
I didn't read many of them but I can give you an example:
Scar (The Lion King) He was neglected by his father (Ahadi) since the day he was born. His real name is "Taka" which literally means "Dirt" while his brother's name Mufasa means "King".However he was also treated as if he was "worth less" and since he was disinterested as the second son of the king anyway you can understand well why he became jealous and hateful...
Hans (Frozen): He was the youngest of 13 brothers and was mistreated by his father and brother because he had the image of a weakling and was (according to his father) too mild- mannered, which should be compensated for with regular abuse. He soon succumbed to depressions and became cold-hearted and manipulative as we know him from the movie "frozen".
...
But how I said: There are many more books about "why the Disney villains" became evil even from a few fairy- tail villains.
Now that we clarified that, I hope it's no longer a problem that I have a different opinion than you...
More like his neutral. Rameses becomes a villian when Moses ran away and left a scar in his heart which hardened made him become cruel and twisted with anger, pride and hatred.
The way the queen hangs her head in shame says a lot. She raised Moses better than that.
Which is why Moses let Zipporah escape.
i like how in this film there are more complex situations than any other religion themed film. in any other version of this, all Egyptians are cartoonishly evil from the beginning.
but this film shows good people everywhere, even Faroh is portrayed as caring about his sons, but having to maintain the ancient rule at the same time. the only really bad characters are Hotep and Hoy, the priests, which are cartoonishly evil. but the rest are more complex, and having a gentle hearted mother and a stoic but kinda caring father makes it far more enjoyable
Vasili Stan I do think the Egyptians had the capacity for good but don't let the isolation of these scenes deceive you. Good people do not turn a blind eye to injustice. Also, you must comprehend the degree to which the queen profits from slavery. If you want to make the case that in those times the Queen was more of a trophy than a monarch; one this movie shows that Seti does listen to her, two she is well aware of the injustice she profits from, now she may have been by the river during the genocide. Still, that same genocide is written on the walls.
Moreover, later in the movie, Moses realises that he has been turning a blind eye to injustice and even says that Aaron was right to condemn him ”I didn't see because I didn't want to see”.
In conclusion yes real evil people are not moustache-twirling, maniacal laughing or whatever colloquial hyperboles that are frequently used to symbolise evil. They are much more like you and me, but that makes them no less evil and do not be deceived.
@@michelclarke9996 Of course. God blessed the Pharaoh who listened to Joseph; He rewards good behaviour when He sees it. He is merciful, after all. But this shows the point of Jesus' sacrifice. Good people get twisted into doing bad acts, and that's why we needed Jesus to save us. The fact is we've all sinned, even if we're otherwise good people, and that's unacceptable in God's eyes. We're only saved by His mercy.
xTwilightWolvesx I am glad you have understood these scenes. It seems like you let scripture guide your understanding. May Elohim continue to guide you.
They had such an amazing brotherly relationship, sad to see how it ended
It's better that it ended. If they stayed brotherly, Moses could have went into Rameses's way and become bad like him.
Then you see "The Plagues" and your heart just crumbles to pieces 😔
the way the movie portrayed there brotherly relationship was sweet but in the Bible Pharoah actually, sought to kill Moses when he found out he murdered the man and Moses immediately fled into the desert from there. Moses and Ramases actually did not grow up together and didn't have much of a relationship. There are many things this movie got wrong about the true story but it is still an entertaining and inspiring film
@@dolls_realm Well, the Bible never actually names the Pharoah, and it's generally considered that the Biblical account of the story is at best a very loose account, and at worst largely made up.
@@John_Smith. The Word of the Bible is the truth, but yes he is only referred to as Pharoah which does make things confusing for me
This really was some of the peak of American animated cinema
I miss those days 😪
I can't believe it didn't get more recognition in its time.
@@g07denslicer It DID get recognition in its time (late 1990s/early 2000s).
My question is, WHY IS IT NOT TALKED ABOUT TODAY in mainstream?
Nobody will ever forget Lion King (rightfully so), but WHY has this film been forgotten?
@@franktruth9639 Because lion king formed the moral compass of a generation and this movie is too nuanced to influence children and arguably not appropriate to even show to kids considering how many people are murdered, enslaved, and the actions of the characters could portray bullying and abuse as funny to young children who usually take things at face value. As far as im concerned this is an adult animated film and a masterful one at that. Also old people have some weird phobia or bias against animated shows.
@@BobbieBins the lion king has fraticide and atempted child murder, wtf are you on?

Scary how Moses is jokingly foreshadowing the future of Ramses and Egyptian Empire
Omg I never thought about that!!!
Indeed he is, now that you say it!
Wow. I never took note to that!
God did not use Moses to destroy the Egyptian empire, the empire fell when Cleopatra made a fatal mistake.
@@Lightningstrike1220 agree, but I am talking mostly about physical destruction, and deaths of Egyptian people, which occur during Ramses reign
It's amazing how Val Kilmer and Ralph Fiennes were both in their mid-to-late thirties here but were still able to give the feeling of teenagers.
Moses was 40 years old when he fled from Egypt.
Seen something that said back then the term teenagers wasn’t really a thing you were either an adult or a child people back then had to grow up way faster then we do today so it’s kinda fitting

The tagline on one of the posters for this movie put it best:

Technically the truth
Forshadowing
Little did moses know that was his destiny. Not
Ramses's.
Technically yeah
@@prime8478 you got that in reverse. It was Rameses' destiny to do that due to his arrogance, stubbornness and pride. Moses was only the messenger, hence why there is a saying, "Don't shoot the messenger, he's just there to deliver a message". If Rameses heeded and let the Hebrews go, none of the plagues would have happened.
"But one weak link can break the chain of a mighty dynasty"

What they did to the girl was pretty cruel and humiliating.
Well it does give us a real reason to understand why Moses feels so terrible later on in the film. It makes him more believable as a lost fool before he is redeemed.
Moses is one of the best characters ever
In a way he did safe her twice after, first it was better to fall in water rather than man handled or harmed by the palace guards , and two when he saw her sneaking out of the place that night he sent the guards away so she wouldn’t get caught
Yep, a bath can be VERY harmful... C'mon, she was a captive, a slave. The way she was treated was in fact very lenient, afterall she just tried to bite heir to the throne - not the smartest move for someone in her position. In my opinion it wasn't a show of strength/character but one of stupidity.
@@gratius1394 The fact is they were in a higher position to her and abused their power to mistreat her. That will always be cruel
I like how you can feel the fatherly love even while he's scolding him.
Yeah. For as harsh as Seti is with Rameses, it comes out of genuine concern. He knows he won’t be around forever and wants to make sure he can entrust his empire to a worthy successor, once he dies. Rameses, so far, hasn’t proven himself to be this worthy successor with his behavior and needs to be held accountable for it.
Yeah lol. This was a really great movie..
@@speedracer2008 What love about this is even the Villains have a set of very human morals and care about their close ones.
This movie was so human
Agree! :)
The characters were so relatable
Maybe cause it is
the level of foreshadowing in these scenes is INSANE
Yeah the bible does that lol
I think it would be more foreshadowing if everyone didn't know the story. xD
Yes the Qur’an does that (and Injeel and Taurat did that)
2:45 I just realized, everything that Moses said here happened. But it wasn't his brother that caused it, it was him.
mann ur good for noticing that
Actually it wasn’t Moses it was Rameses because he hardened his heart towards God resulting in plagues and destruction as punishment
However great attention to detail
Well, the Nile didn't dry up it got turned to blood.
No duh i just watched this clip noticed that.
Everything Moses listed is everything that happens AFTER Ramses refused to obey God and let the people of Israel go. Everything was caused by Ramses's pride and stubbornness
Don’t worry. Nobody will even notice us coming in.
(Large crowd cheers)
“Nobody will even notice”
The bond Moses and Ramses had makes the movie later on that much more tragic
You can't help but to feel bad for Rameses during his younger days. It's hard trying to live up to your parents expectations
yeah I love how they made the antagonist so human and relatable
Agreed.
Ramses should've moved out and got his own apartment. He has excellent credit score 😄
poor Ramises his father twisted him up to be just like him that is why he became the bad guy.
It's interesting how he says one weak link can bring a dynasty down, goes down in history as Ramses The Great and one of the most successful pharaoh's in Egyptian history.
That’s cause Ramises was a selfish brat
In real life Ramses was one of the most successful Pharaohs in Egypt. He shaped Egypt into a hub of trade and education.

"But one weak link can break the chain of a mighty dynasty!"
It's cruel but true. Just look at Akhenaten.
The blasphemous pharaoh
Akhenaten was never the weak link in the chain. In the political sphere, he had simply not worried about possible revolts, a detail that his successors think about. He was an "out of the box" personality, but certainly not the worst of the pharaohs. Not even the best, and certainly not a man of action, but I think talking about a weak link is too much for even him (in fact, his dynasty does not disappear. If it were the downfall of Egypt, we would have had a political breakdown, like occurred in 476 AD for the Western Roman Empire)
In the Taiwanese Mandarin dub, Seti calls Rameses a "扶不起的阿斗" (fú bù qǐ de ādǒu) which means a weak and inept fool, someone who cannot be helped, or a hopeless case.

Here’s My favorite scene: Rameses: Tell me this Moses tell me this, why is that every time you start something, I’m the one who ends up in trouble? Moses dropping a bag of punch on the Phaorough’s assistants and getting away with it while Rameses gets noticed. It’s cause Moses is a prankster. 😂😂😂😂
its me and my sister :)
Thats me and my siblings!.Also I read this while they were saying it!
Also my fav scene😂😂
Lmao 😂😂😂😂 that’s me and my siblings too. They captured the sibling relationship perfectly
Me and my cousin Danny, mostly he gets in trouble than I did since I was two years younger than he is. But eventually he and I get along, since we outgrew our rivalry.
Poor Ramses, he had so much pressure at such a young age, lost one of the most supportive people in his life and is constantly compared to his father. No wonder he broke down so hard. Clear inferiority complex and self image issues. And it resulted in dead people including his son.
I'm sorry Rameses you deserved better. And something cathartic to do. Like a vacation.
Yeah, poor thing, he deserves better
Or maybeeeee it's not that the slave owner deserved better, it's that the slave owner should have become better. Sigh...Rameses your life could've changed for the better. Moses would've been the coolest Uncle, Isreal could've had a sister city in Egypt and everything.
@Princess Nylani omg yes!
@@Vi-ok8of well your upbringing says a lot about who you'll be as an adult, it'd be one thing if Rameses was taught to be sympathetic and kind towards those less fortunate at a young age, but he was taught by his father to be a cold, ruthless, king. Plus Seti constantly pushed Rameses so hard, and if you notice Rameses as pharaoh said "A greater Egypt than that of my father." When Moses asked him about what he saw down in the streets of Egypt.
Their mom is an admirable woman.
Whatever happened to her?? Did she get killed by the plague?? After her final words were you are our son and we love you
Under far better circumstances, could you imagine what Moses and Ramses could achieve together?
Right!?
True but in a even more tragic way, the modern western world as we know it would never have come into existence. No 10 commandments, then no Judaism, no Christianity, no teachings of christ, no magna Carta and no usa. In a twisted way this tragedy helped bring about the modern world as we know it.
The tragedy of this story: this amazing bond being broken. I love their dynamic, and it’s such a shame that they are torn apart by the end. Sad for sure.
How the Queen mother put that hand up when Ramses was about say "father" was everything at 1:18.
Mother knows best
Very well animated too! How it jerks upwards like that syncing with Ramses' gesture. And how poised she is. Like she was saying to him don't press it any farther.
There's a lot of really neat details in Queen Tuya's behaviour throughout the movie, like this one. She seems to be pretty sharp and cunning, like when she advises the boys on how to behave while they are before the crowd of people and their Father. I suppose, one could hardly be a queen, without the sharpness and smarts to get you in this position.
2:54 A normal brother relationship lol
Such a good movie!
I'm Ramses and Moses is my little brother in this scene
1:19 I love the visual contrast between the Pharaoh and the queen where the former is in the shadow while the latter is in the light
moses ; dont worry nobody will even notice us coming in

i love that part
The best
The background animation is beautiful~ The scenery from the courtroom window is breathtaking
literally, the thought behind it, especially Pharaoh beside the statue that we see Ramses beside again later its so cool!!
I know right!! It's really excellent Animation!!
That’s karnak in the background
2:30 I just realized as an adult that while Moses is being sarcastic, he actually prophesies the future; Ramses does bring down Egypt single-handedly due to his pride and hardened heart…
i genuinely adore Moses' and Rameses' brotherly moments and banter early in the film, like when Moses cheered Rameses up by pouring punch on the high priests. also when the Queen went from being all sweet with "Ah, the young princes..." to "Rameses!" and saved his ass from being clueless XD
also did anyone notice how Rameses ducked down to hide behind Moses when Zipporah said "I won't be given to anyone"? and they both looked genuinely fearful in that moment 😂
3:43 The way he slaps the slave's hand is a very interesting detail. Before realizing he was one of them, Moses also didn't care about the slaves and treated them badly. It's wonderful to see how he changed in the movie.
I think that's an Egyptian servant, not a Hebrew slave.
But it's still show disrespect about slaves in general if you watched the movie you would see that he learned to respect everyone no matter who they are @@humps678

1:42 Really amazing dialogue here. The Pharaoh tells Moses that he will never have to carry a burden like the crown he will pass to Ramses is marvelous. The way he lines up with the statue behind him shows us that the Pharaoh truly does have seemingly endless power. Yet alludes to Moses having to carry the burden of God and the task of freeing the Hebrews from Egyptian slavery and leading them back to The Promised Land as God will task him, which is a far greater burden than the Pharaoh would ever carry.

Rameses wasnt a bad person if you reaaaally think about it. You cant help but pity him by the end of the movie
ikr. hes just doing what he's taught. especially because he doesnt want to be the "weak link". he still cares for moses.
Yeah
True. In the Torah, he was an ass though
Except he was a brutal, arrogant, egotistical dictator.
He kind of is though. Sure he had real human emotions, and his motivations were not EVIL, as all he wanted was a strong kingdom. The problem is he was completely apathetic to everyone he considered beneath him. You can see it here. He wasn’t sadistic enough to rape the foreigner, but at the same time he didn’t value her life enough to prevent Moses from doing it. It’s foreshadowing how he saw the enslavement of the hebrews. It wasn’t based on racial hatred, but he was too apathetic to value their autonomy over the greatness of his dynasty.
This always saddest me. Even though they came from different parents they were True Brothers who greatly cared for each other, which is what makes their falling out more painful.!

It's definitely up there as one of the best. Personally, I don't believe that any single film can hold that title, especially since new masterpieces always come out. So many contenders, why have the award only belong to one?
I mean, Pharaoh wasnt wrong, Ramses is fated to be the next leader of the nation, if you cant raise up a strong leader who sees the bigger picture then everything the former generation did to build things up will crumble to ash
Which, ironically, thanks to Ramses not seeing past his own ego, is exactly what happened, he lost EVERYTHING, had he simply let them go he wouldnt have suffered the huge losses that HE brought on himself even though he was warned many MANY times about it
2:50 That foreshadowing though...
5:57 She Cares
Fun Fact: Depending on which you read, she did join him in the Exodus
Also, please don't argue. I hate Biblical debates. We all learn. Make some mistakes. Please respect my knowledge.
that's cool
Been 2 years and no arguments

“Ohhh my new thing!”
“I AM SO UPSET!” 😂
It’s so rich.
Great lines from Besties Steve Martin and Martin Short. Love this movie.
It's funny how little respect Moses seemed to have for the fake priests even before he discovered that he was the chosen one, a nice little foreshadowing lol
That's what he said?? "My new thing" 😂😂😂😂 I couldn't fully understand what he was saying, it sounded like "my new thing", but I was thinking why he wouldn't know the name of it! 😅
Oh I love the old audio. The Bluray version has everyone's voice pitched or something, you can tell most clearly when Patrick Stewart and Val Kilmer spoke.
Moses is Valkimer! Oh man! I did not see that! ❤️
Val Kilmer*
Awww man I bought the download but I wanted the bluray disc. Thanks for the warning😅
I just realised from watching this that the Royal Family, bar Moses, we’re all played by English actors, so this further shows that Moses was adopted because he speaks more like the Hebrew slaves than his parents and brother. (I know this is just because of the casting choices but it was a good move.)
Me too and I still have this movie on 📀. In blu ray version of Shrek, they added the song background, when donkey sings I’m all alone.
I always interpret this scene with the slave girl as a great analogy of how to end sexism - "if someone looks up to you and they do or say something sexist, show your disapproval". At any age, expecially the young, dissappointing those who you look up to is the ultimate learning experience.
This also works if they do anything bad at all, really.
“There go the pyramids.” Moses you have NO IDEA.
The pyramids are still fine or am I missing something
@@clovebeans713 I’m basically referring to Moses unknowingly joking about their future of the entire dynasty falling apart in his brother’s pursuit of the Israelites. The pyramids was just a generalization of the joke as well an additional reference to a modern expression “there goes the neighborhood” which is an exclamation after a negative change affects someone's neighborhood. In this case, the pyramids being said neighborhood.
@@HalfafanD Oh ok, thought the plagues affected the pyramids or something, also irl didn't Rameses dynasty flourish under his rule or something like he is referred to Rameses the great.
@@clovebeans713 Keep in mind that in the Bible he’s only listed as “The Pharaoh” and they only made him Ramses at the time of the movie’s production at the time since research at that point led people to believe that the two were one and the same. It was later revealed that at least two mummies (including Ramses II) were tampered with and had parts stolen upon their initial study so it’s honestly hard to say which one it was assuming it was any of them. And these are only the corpses that were still preserved to this day. If the Pharaoh really did die in the ocean, there’d be hardly any body to recover. Again, assuming what remained of his people even dared into the Red Sea to bring their king home to be entombed. Now, that’s all circumstantial, but it is also explained that the reason they don’t mention a name and just his title is because this part of the Bible is written long after the events occur. And there wasn’t exactly a way to look up all the Pharaohs and their histories. So the author couldn’t figure out the name and therefore left it at just pharaoh. The other reason is because historically speaking there was evidence of certain pharaohs misrepresented themselves in their records found on monuments, temples, and burial chamber walls. Like forging evidence. So there could easily be inconsistencies on who was legit and who wasn’t, as well as all they’ve accomplished. However there is scientific evidence of the plagues actually happening so at least we have that. Sorry if I’m getting a little thesis-ish. This movie fascinates me not only on a story and animation level but on a historical level too.
@@HalfafanD wow thanks for explaining the joke (I also didn't get it) and all this Biblical/historical detail, fascinating!!
I just noticed that Ramses is always associated with the color blue and Moses with the color red
0:38 pharaoh look at moses generously 0:40 by contrast, pharaoh glare at ramses fiercely
Really illustrates how one views their children. The youngest is looked fondly and is often overlooked alleviating the burdens. Whilst the eldest is frowned on and pressured for they are viewed as the one to lead before the youngest. It's a raw look to how siblings often rival each other due to the fact of how the adult raises them.
@@Wolf10media well said.
I love how everyone respects momma's "say".
Ramses literally is that guy at school to say "personally I would not take that level of disrespect"

The queen
So cute
What Moses predicted it came true years later

Wonderful cartoon. Relationship ethics. The mother doesn't even need to say a lot for everyone to understand and that's so charming.
This scene shows many things.
Even great rulers must do horrible things.
Not everything is perfect in life
It’s the “great” leaders of empires that typically do horrible things
@@mhlib7569
I bet the Pharao was still pro-life
"must?" As if the pharoh had to kill Hebrew babies to keep the population at bay.
@@mhlib7569 exact they do, they hold Hierarchy, nobility, strength, respect, honor, and many things on their shoulders.
To govern a large nation to control people and do bad things with good intentions for the state of their people.
They must burden the blame and issues at hand which they understand responsibility.
Even the Pharaoh says "Ramsay must not be led astray, not by anyone nor by Moses."
Hence forth being a ruler, one must be wise and careful, but also responsible for the tasks needed.
@@koreancowboy42But that's the thing. They're doing it for the state of nobility, grandness and pride but sacrificing wellbeing of a group. And it becomes another thing when it isn't coming from a selfish feeling as expected, but it becomes so much of a tradition that it becomes a way of life. It allows disassociation so you have a ruler who is genuine good father do horrible thing by disassociating from the reality of the suffering of slaves and from the question is it worth it for an ancestor's pride.
Moses loves and respects both parents.
Despite not knowing that Moses isn’t his son, Pharaoh loves each boy equally, but is especially hard on Rameses as he is first born and the heir to his throne.
“You will never have to carry a burden like the crown I shall pass to Rameses. He must not allow himself to be led astray.” Comment explains it all
".. Even by you."
Although Moses is teasing Ramses when he talks of how Ramses will single-handedly bring Egypt to ruin, his prediction is later fulfilled when they are estranged from each other over the issue of freeing the Hebrews.
That brother chemistry is so real 😊 Mischievous troublemaker little brother Moses and reasonable down-to-earth big brother Ramses
3:13 Moses: you might as well 😏
Ramses: poured the whole jug of wine over priests as well with smile
😂😂😂😂
3:35 "Well in that case I suppose you care a lot than I do that we're gonna be late for the banquet for example?" *sly face* 😏

And they did the color of the people right. DreamWorks done their research unlike Cartoon nextwork 2023 Mummies 😂

i love how they made the egyptians dark skinned here, like they really were, the original egyptians.
Southern egyptians were dark, the rest looked like arabs, as did most north africans
@@virino7668 nonsense. When I say Egyptians u mean most of these, pharaohs etc. Basically the entire Egyptian empire consisted of people with dark skin. And I didn’t believe that most of North Africa were Arabs originally, how when it’s Africa ? I hope you realise that North Africa has been colonised by Arabs, and that’s the reason why the follo arab religion and Arab culture/language and have Arab blood.
@@jollygoodgordon5580 Yes I know they were colonised by arabs lol. Prior to this, they still looked much more similar to arabs than sub Sahara Africans. North Africa and Arabia were/are in close proximity to each other, so it would make sense for their inhabitants to look similar. Similarly, many western asians e.g Armenians, Georgians etc looks very similar to southern Europeans, as their countries are right next to teach other, despite being on different continents
@@virino7668 the Arabs didn't colonize Egypt until or invade until the 7th century
edit: my english is not that good sorry if it doesn't make any sense
Egypt may be in Africa. But the pyramids are geographically closer to Israel than any other modern African country. The Pyramids are closer to Israel than modern Egypts own South and Eastern borders.
The ancient Egyptians being semetic peoples make sense given that the earliest civilisations and Empires originated in the region just to its East.
Idc what anyone says, this movie is fantastic and it did not need to make Moses and Rameses this damn attractive.
LMAOOO so true tho, like i just blindly watched the film when i was 9 cus younger me was mesmerised by the handsome prince (moses) on the cover ☠

"Singlehandedly, you will manage to bring the greatest kingdom on earth to ruin."
That was a funny line but there was so much foreshadowing packed into it. Wow.
Who else was mind blown when they found out pharoah was voiced by Patrick Stewart?
No exaggeration, this has got to be one of the best (if not the best) American animated films created. The animation, story line (mostly accurate to scripture, and captivating) and music score are amazing.
Agreed sista! ❤
I agree, I actually believe this is one of the greatest animated movies of a time.
The voice acting in this movie is brilliant.
