I have a real 1971 convertible with a 72 grill and tail panel, but the side markers from the 71, which I believe could be a Mannix show car. California car, original green color. Hope to start the restoration process soon.
Seems like I remember that NHTSA mandating the use of side marker lights beginning with the 1968 model year for all new cars sold. However, I had a 1968 Ford Fairlane that had the parking light serving as the turn signal and the side marker light in the front; however, it did not have a light in the back on the side it had a reflector as did my dad's Country Squire and his Ford pickup. I would say they were just filled in on this car. Seems like Mike Brady drove a 1967 Dodge Monaco in the pilot and in the first season of the series he drove a 1969 Plymouth Fury convertible. I heard the Fury had also been found. GREAT VIDEO!
I can tell you this. It's not the Brady Barracuda. The convertible used a specific Convertible only A post. It is different from the A Post the hard top used. The Brady car was a 1971 with 1972 updates. All convertibles used the A Post with the chrome surround. You can clearly see that in the car when Greg is backing the car into the driveway. The line you see on the hard top A Post is from the top when put up. Because of vibration and body flexing from driving the car, it will create that line you are seeing. Convertibles have reenforced frames to strengthen the body. This one probably doesn't unless the person who chopped the top did so. Side marker lights were mandated by the government and are on all cars manufactured starting January 1, 1968. Here is another way you can test your theory. Look at the build date of the car. This episode aired on March 10, 1972. My guess is that it was filmed up to two weeks ahead of time. So the likelihood that the car on the Brady Bunch was manufactured between August of 1971 up to sometime in late January. If the car you have was manufactured after January and especially February through July of 1972, then there is further proof that this is not the car.
Did the Brady car have the fender mounted turn signals? Also are there are shots in the show with the top up? If so you will see the snaps in the show.
What snaps? Convertibles don't have snaps on the header panel. They have latches. The car in the video has them but that is because it is a hack job, not a real convertible like the one in the series.
Very interesting to watch. There may not be a definitive answer but when you add everything up, it's probably the same car. Either way, I hope you enjoy it!
Definitive answer..."Nobody that knows anything about Mopars or Chrysler or the TV series would think for a second it is the same car. Al the reasons are given in the other responses.

I wonder with the production company, based on the fact that they must’ve insured the car, would keep accurate enough records to know the Vin on the car they used?
They also had a 1971 blue Barracuda they use that was identical to that car. I bet they used the same car but changed out the tail panel if Plymouth didn't have a Conv in 1972. And the reason i say that, in Smokey and the Bandit, They used 1976 Trans Ams and used the 1977 front clips because the '77 models weren't in production yet.
I would have thought it would be much easier and cheaper to put new ‘72 front & rear fascias on a ‘71 convertible than chopping off the roof and adding all the ‘71 top gear to a ‘72.
The less than high-quality paint and un primerd body panels wouldn't be out of place for a movie car they were on a tight filming schedule and a factory 318 car wouldn't have the rally dash unless ordered by the owner.
While many have looked at it rightly so from a details perspective, Iwould also look at it from a cost perspective. The Brady Bunch was not a very highly rated show, nor were cars featured prominently in it. The cars were just mainly props and to convey the image that the producers wanted the Brady's to have. Carol always had a wagon and Mike always had a convertible. I believe the convertible was to show Mike as an upper income younger minded free spirited dad. If they wanted to portray a 72 convertible that was obviously because Chrysler either wanted to promote a potential 72 convertible and keep the Brady family driving Chryslers. Therefore, I believe that it would have made more sense for Chrysler to supply this and do so by converting a 71 to look like a 72 vs the producers going through the major expense of commissioning George Barris to chop a top on a 72. I believe if it were up to the producers they would have just procured a convertible from some other manufacturer just like they did in later years with the Chevrolet Caprice convertible. To me, unless there were other shows where this particular car had also been used, it was probably not customized for television. The Brady Bunch was simply not a show where the producers felt the need to spend money on custom automobiles. Probably as close as they ever came was the 56 Chevy that Greg bought.
Is the door tag showing the month/year it was built still there? "Fender Benders" aired as the season finale March 10 of '72 (but was the 2nd to last episode filmed that season). It looks like that car was also in "The Big Bet" episode that aired in Jan 28 of '72. I came across a source indicating this episode was produced Nov 17 of '71. If what I said is correct, this would have to have been a pretty early build to be the car.
Looks like they cut the top off a '72 coupe and put in a '71 grill. They probably filled the marker lights because the'71's were flat in the fender and the 72's were on the the fender.
Looking at some BB screenshots, the show car had a "Barracuda" logo on the drivers door between the side mirror and the gap between the front fender and door. Check to see if those holes were filled. Looks like a different front grille and headlights - but those could've been replaced.
Cool stuff on the convertible, the likelihood is really a matter degrees or probabilities here. PROS: Full blue interior, converted tail panel, standard dash, tell tale of factory sidemarkers all go along way, HOWEVER - the stand outs are the defect in the decklid & the remains of a strap on RF fender bolt. So far I'm guessing roughly 65-80% likelihood it could be the car. CONS: Underside of hood is different factory color, lack of evidence that tail panel swap is as old as the car(the black e coating will eventually show some surface rust or other aging that ISN'T visible on the trunk lip area), lack of any kind of paper trail or production info (when is production date of car related to TV show production timeline? Remember the need to convert car before TV shooting schedule BEFORE episode aired.) Also not seeing any well lit pics of inside trunk or under car(especially RF corner, other mounts, straps, or strange holes/brackets?).
zero percent chance of it being the same car. You are forgetting the fact that the interior is a different design, even if it was the same color. But the main reason was the car in the show was a real convert and you can tell the difference a mile away if you have ever owned either one of them.

Very interesting. There is a lot of evidence that supports what the car could be. But nothing concrete. I’ve seem Mark from Grave yard Carz talk about the Brady Bunch Convertible. I thought he stated that Chrysler made the convertible for the show. Most likely sent out to Creative Industries or something like that. It would be interesting to run the Vin and see if it was registered in California. If the vin came back it was registered in California and belonged to a production company. You’ve got your proof.
Movie set vehicles were not intended for sale to the public and were not assigned a VIN number.Where is the VIN number on this car or the fender tag.The Brady Bunch 72 convertible was the 71 with the rear panel and grille changed to 72 specs.
2 things n im no expert n dont claim to be. 1st, do a title background check, if it was used in a tv show, it was owned by a movie studio or a company that supplies cars to a movie studio because: 2nd, from what i have read/understood, Plymouth did not make a convertible barracuda that year, also from the graveyard cars show both mark worman and Tony D'Agostino stated the car was a 1 of 1 as it was converted to a convertible for the show, someone did the conversion then, and that goes back to my 1st statement of do a title check back to its sale. pay the money and get a Marti report or whatever they call it as u have the VIN i assume, it will tell u more than anyone or anything else can. Thank You
If Mark Worman and Tony DA said that they were both wrong. It was a 71 car converted to a 72 front and rear treatment. Probably before any 72's had been built other than pre production ones.
Looks like a vynle top that was cut up , 71 was last year for convertible, my father's 71 had smooth stainless window frame with no snaps like this, so it was custom made ,72 would have surface mounted marker lights on side fenders.
I own a 70 cuda convertible which I completely restored down to the bare unibody. Couple things on your 72 that don't make it a Brady car are factory convertible stainless windshield frame and the rear where roof was cut off. If you look at the Brady car it has the factory top down boot clipped to the factory stainless trim and top is down flush. Which can't be done with hardtop inner wheel housings and rear package tray. Brady car was a convertible that modified not a hardtop that was converted. I strongly recommend you put torque boxs front and back like all convertibles came with. Also frame connectors because convertibles had reinforced rocker panels. All convertibles have a spring loaded wedge in the B pillar and a plastic coated wedge on the door that mate together to maintain proper door gap as all convertibles flex while driving. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I know these convertibles inside out and upside down. (rotisserie)
The only way your statement could be true is if they converted a 71 Convertible using 72 trim pieces that were shaped to fit or custom made. Dodge did not offer a Cuda or Barracuda convertible in 72 nor were they making them just for shows. These were all converted from a base car by someone, most likely Barris as at that time he was doing pretty much everything for TV cars.
That's exactly what they did. Used a 70-71 convertible and put 72-74 grill, tail light panel and marker lights. I was trying to explain to him that his 72 hardtop with the roof cut off. Is not the Brady cuda. Which he was asking in the video

I asked this guy if he has had an update from reaching out to Barris' daughter about that, its been two years, and he says "coming soon". Its been two years!
From what I remember all they did was change the the grill assembly and the tail light panel to update it from a 71 to a 72. But they were 71 convertibles originally. Also the cars had flat hoods because they were Barracudas not Cudas. And those cut up quarter panels look terrible there's no way the convertible top cover would sit flat enough on there.

I wonder with the production company, based on the fact that they must’ve insured the car, would keep accurate enough records to know the Vin on the car they used?
They currently have the car in their possession for validation. Hopefully it all pans out.
They also had a 1971 blue Barracuda they use that was identical to that car. I bet they used the same car but changed out the tail panel if Plymouth didn't have a Conv in 1972. I would have thought it would be much easier and cheaper to put new ‘72 front & rear fascias on a ‘71 convertible than chopping off the roof and adding all the ‘71 top gear to a ‘72.
You would think so.
Which is what they did. This was in the magazines years ago. So this 72 is not even close to being the car in the show.
@@auteurfiddler8706 You are correct sir.

Mr. Brady's cuda had a flat hood and hub caps, but things could have been changed later.
And it was a column shift car
They did the same thing to joe mannix cuda. Took a 73 and cut it into a vert .
70+71 had wide and narrow marker lights, these look to be 72-74 marker.

It looks like that car was also in "The Big Bet" episode that aired in Jan 28 of '72. I came across a source indicating this episode was produced Nov 17 of '71.
Remember the need to convert car before TV shooting schedule BEFORE episode aired.)
Also not seeing any well lit pics of inside trunk or under car(especially RF corner, other mounts, straps, or strange holes/brackets?).
Wow great information...Thank you
zero percent chance of it being the same car. You are forgetting the fact that the interior is a different design, even if it was the same color. But the main reason was the car in the show was a real convert and you can tell the difference a mile away if you have ever owned either one of them.
If you watch the show the car in the show was a column shift

Another thing to look at is, last six of vin should be pressed in on the cowl and radiator support. Also a driver door sticker would have the VIN. Also on the block rt side where block meets oil pan and tranny above pan.
That is correct.

Yep and also would NOT have used an imitation cnvt.
I'd look for aftermarket bracing on the frame rails.. as cutting the roof would weaken the rails.
Subframe connectors will help, but you have to install 1/4" steel stock for each rocker - and a whole "bunch" more. Not for the faint of heart.

Absolutely!
Movie set vehicles were not intended for sale to the public and were not assigned a VIN number.Where is the VIN number on this car or the fender tag.The Brady Bunch 72 convertible was the 71 with the rear panel and grille changed to 72 specs.

Did you track any of the dmv paperwork to see if it was ever owned by Paramount or any of their subsidiaries?
Actually, Yes we tried. However it really didn't lead anywhere.
2 things n im no expert n dont claim to be.
1st, do a title background check, if it was used in a tv show, it was owned by a movie studio or a company that supplies cars to a movie studio because:
2nd, from what i have read/understood, Plymouth did not make a convertible barracuda that year, also from the graveyard cars show both mark worman and Tony D'Agostino stated the car was a 1 of 1 as it was converted to a convertible for the show, someone did the conversion then, and that goes back to my 1st statement of do a title check back to its sale.
pay the money and get a Marti report or whatever they call it as u have the VIN i assume, it will tell u more than anyone or anything else can.
Thank You
If Mark Worman and Tony DA said that they were both wrong. It was a 71 car converted to a 72 front and rear treatment. Probably before any 72's had been built other than pre production ones.
Sounds like you're Building A Mystery
Just look on the top and see if there’s an umbrella hole from when Bobby went on the date with Greg at the drive in
That's hilarious. And No
Looks like a vynle top that was cut up , 71 was last year for convertible, my father's 71 had smooth stainless window frame with no snaps like this, so it was custom made ,72 would have surface mounted marker lights on side fenders.
I have to believe only someone that has never seen a conbertible would think those snaps go with it. Have then never seen or heard of latches?
Awesome. Thank you for the advice. Thank you for watching
