Man, Craig is a cool dude. He's definitely a real car guy and turned his passion into an empire. The way he and Jay talk about these cars in real terms, is appreciated. They were cool and were performance for their era, but they don't run or drive like a modern car.

@@carebear2272It’s another reason why these cars had to come to an end. People always mention Insurance rates and higher emission standard, but another forgotten reason is a lot of people where killed driving these muscle cars. The horse power race in Detroit’s big three where making the cars faster and faster but safety considerations were thrown out the door. Guy’s would take their family out and step on then BOOM, the car would end up hitting a tree. Many were killed.

I was lucky enough to have worked at Chrysler engineering during this time period. We had a blast developing these cars. At that time they were just cars to us we had no idea they would become high dollar collector items. It was a great time in the American auto industry.

Should have bought them ALL and tucked them away when they hit the used car lots. This was a great episode. Living in Az. I've been to a number of the Barrett-Jackson collector car auctions and the array of vehicles available for sale is off the charts. It was very cool to see Craig Jackson with his '70 Hemi 'Cuda and Jay talking cars and then driving this rare and iconic car whose value is likely off the charts.
I drove a '74 Barracuda off the dealer's lot 50 years ago and still have the car. Having been garage kept and driven just on weekends the past 35 years, it looks almost like the day it was made. Though the 'big blocks' were not available by this last year of their production, the rebuilt 360 with a few speed goodies added a few years ago makes for a nice cruiser with the windows down and some oldies playing on the under-dash 8-Track player. Yea, Like Craig said, the doors make a funny sound and there are some little rattles and squeaks...maybe that's the charm of the old cars. What's crazy about these old Mopars is that I can almost never stop at a light without someone rolling their window down to comment about the car, or to ask me what year it is etc. Mostly, I'm just very happy to see that Jay has highlighted cars like this Hemi on his show with car people like Craig Jackson. Enjoyed it.

@@stephenholland5930 Thank you for the note. What's crazy is that the car cost $3,460 out the door, including the tax, license plates and a full tank of gas. The only option from the dealer was the 8-Track player for $40.00. My wife and I traded in an old VW Bug plus $300 cash, so our loan was $2,250 for 3 years and a payment of I think $77.00/Mo. I remember we were driving home that night with the car and she said to me; "How are we going to pay that?"'...Lol. The Chrysler/Plymouth dealer was a friend of my father's. All these years later, the son of the now deceased dealer, calls me two or three times a year to remind me that if I ever sell the car he wants the first right of refusal to buy it. He's been looking for a car that his late father sold while owning the very first of his several dealerships in the NYC suburbs back in the day.
      Thanks again, and take care.

@@basshead. First, your comment is not that simple there are many factors to consider however, a 426 may rev a few hundred RPMs that is not enough to outrun a 6-pack car. 6-pack (440) will kill any Hemi out of the hole however on the big end the Hemi will come close to outrunning the 6-pack. As a matter of fact, if they were to race 1350/60 feet instead of the 1320 the hemi would win. Keep in mind that both cars were set-up exactly the same.

That Hemi Cuda is an awesome car to see! The 426 Hemi was a racing engine detuned for the street. I think the last Dodge Challengers and Chargers with the high performance Hellcats will be worth a whole lot in the future.

My first car was a 1971 Barracuda I bought in 1977 for $1200. It was a 318 with a 3 speed manual on the floor. I was in college, so I didn't have much money, but I did buy a set of ET slotted alum mags with 60 series tires on the rear and 70 series tires on the front and glass pack exhaust. I loved that car even though it wasn't that fast, but it was a head turner and it sounded great. The screen saver on my computer is the only photo I have of that car.

Great car. Though I was a Chevy lover and had the Roth T-shirts to prove it, I always admired the Mopar muscle cars. Kid in my high school in NJ had one of these. And a couple of R/T Challengers. I remember being impressed it had a six pack from the factory.
I bought a '71 455 Buick Centurion Convertible from my dad for 100 bucks. It was. pristine car, cinnamon w/ white top/interior, when he owned it but he sold it to a friend who promptly took into Jersey City and Newark and it was stolen in a day. Cops found it and my dad asked if I still wanted it. I said yes, but was shocked when it arrived on a flatbed. It looked like it went through a gang war. Still, I could see potential. I fixed it up as best as I could. New top, new back window, new chrome, new tires, tuned up, etc. Got so many compliments on that car, from my gf's dad to the local car guys in 'the back row' at the burger places to dudes hanging out at the beach down the shore. With the top down, surfboards fit nicely in the back seat.
On Christmas night, sitting in front of the TV w/ my gf, we heard an explosion outside. My car was hit by the well known 20 something drunk down the street. Plowed right into the front passenger side. I had it parked off the road on her lawn (in the snow) totally OFF THE ROAD. In a way, I guess my Buick saved lives that night, since he was so drunk he would've killed someone if he had gotten out onto the roads. Insurance totaled it and I got a check for 2500 dollars in 1983. That was a fortune for me back then. I wasn't giving up on it. Bought a pro level air compressor, a welder, grinders/sanders, tons of Craftsman tools. Rebuilt it better than ever with lots of money left over.
One week after getting it back on the road, after a year of rebuilding, me and a buddy took it on a road trip from NJ up through Canada all the way to Gaspe peninsula above Nova Scotia for an international Tall Ships Sailing Regatta celebrating the founding of Canada. I had seen the poster in the newspaper and it looked fun. Had no job, only the cash left over, no credit card, not even AAA and a car that was off the road for over year after being totaled. And thought, sure, why not?
Not one hiccup the whole trip. Ran like a Swiss watch. Had one of the best times of my life on that trip. So glad I didn't give up on her.
Here, at 17:38 I noticed that the passenger side wheel looks a bit wobbly. Anyone else notice that?

This car/body style made me fall in love with cars/driving. I had to wait a few years to get my 1973 Challenger, 340. I was so disappointed to find out that emission controls etc. had reduced my dream car to little better than a ‘grocery getter’. Compression had been reduced from the ground pounding 11 to 1 to 8.5 to 1. It still sounded great but the thrill I was expecting was gone.

That's the thing about those old Mopars. Even new they didn't handle that great or even stop that well. I had a 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus I bought two years old right out of high school and with the polyglas tires it handled terrible along with the factory disc brakes. I traded it in on a brand new 1975 Camaro and there was a world of difference with better brakes and radial tires.

Lots of types of cars run out of style because the generations that were interested in them are slowly dying off and them cars are losing value but these cars I think will stand the test of time itself and never lose value because of the almost religious worship of late 60s early 70s muscle cars! They are the golden era of muscle cars!
