My 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner hasn't been driven in 35 years, and today I plan to change that! It won't be easy, but we're restoring the essentials back to their former glory. Think it'll get back on the road again? Stick around to the end of the video to find out!

About fifteen years ago i saw an old 71 Roadrunner that looked just like yours sitting behind a house with weeds all grown up around it. Then on my way home from work i decided to stop and knock on the door. An old man came to the door and i asked if he would sell the car fully expecting him to say no and don't come back again. Well, he surprised me and said he would sell it to me for 300.! I bought it and came back next day with a friend. We boosted the battery and the thing started right up. The old guy said he had started it at least twice a month and let it idle a while. I pumped the tires up and drove it twenty five miles home without a problem. Although it had came with a 383 someone had put a 440 it. The 383 was in the old guys shed torn apart. They had built the 440 engine and although i have owned about every musclecar ever made and even two Vipers, i still think it was the fastest car i ever drove. I gave that car to a young man a couple years later because he fell in love with it but had only saved up about a grand to find his first musclecar. I told him to use the money to fix the paint. Last i heard he was still driving it a few years ago. That's my story and i really enjoy watching you work on yours.

@@44magnum73 It was my downfall my whole life. I also gave a 69 Chevelle SS396 Totally restored to a kid with Cerebral Palsy who had physical problems but still was able to get his driving license. Actually he had saved up 100. dollars to try and find his dream car which was a 69 Chevelle SS396 and i was asking 25k for mine. I admired the kids courage fighting his disability, so one day i called him and asked how much he had saved up. He told me 100. so i told him to come get his new Chevelle. I think i got more than he did out of doing that.
Man, I wish I could find something like that. Here near Pittsburgh you can hardly find anything cool parked in someone's yard anymore and if you do (and they're willing to sell it), they want like $15,000 for a rusted clapped out non-running musclecar.
@Brock_Landers ill never have one of the cars i grew up with because rick guys pay more than the cars worth,and made prices crazy. So i built an 85 shortbed D100 with a 384 4 speed,and it got stolen. Im done.

These 71-74 B Bodies are really coming into play a lot more. They were super cheap a few years ago, but with the rise of the 60's and 70 models prices, they are the only ones left to get running. Good to see these havent been forgotten!

ok i am officially jealous. My first car was a 69 Roadrunner 383 auto with AC. If you had it floored and it hit second gear it would turn the tires over not just chirp but flat out spin them. Then I got a 70 Roadrunner 383 Pistol grip 4 speed and air grabber hood. That was just total bad ass but your 71 is outstanding love the body style can't wait to see where you go with it. I still have Mopar's now my favorite is a 72 Barracuda with a 360 fun car to drive Good Luck with the Roadrunner!!!!!. we'll be watching.

I was a sophomore in high school when these mopars came out and man they were cool but of course I couldn’t afford one but I knew people that had them and my friend had a 68 GTX 440 magnum that would smoke the 383 but this car was a beautiful car back then.
Back when i was a teenager here in ottawa canada there was a beautiful all original 1971 plymouth road runner white with the strobe halo stripe and a air grabber hood it was a 440x6 pack car and had those 15x7 rallys

A great car that deserves to be brought back. While I am partial to my 69 and 70 roadrunners, I would definitely add a 71 to my collection if one came by at a good price. I'm certain it's in a good home. Seems Richard Petty was very successful with his back in the day. Over a million dollars winnings and about 21 victories in a 71.
The Road Runner is a valuable car to some people. I would highly recommend you build this one. It will make you lots of money. Blessings and best wishes.

I love this Roadrunner! I really miss the 70’s and 80’s when you could pick these old gems up cheap and have so much fun with them. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for this one!

You need Holley part number 108-12 for your base plate gasket. It helps reduce heat transfer.

I had a brand new 73 Roadrunner, my first new car! It was a 318 but it still had some balls! My dad had a 68, 70 and 72, all new! All yellow!

Take it to Dalton PBG to cheap power tour fix and repaint ;) I love to see that after hes treatment, he show us how to do it right and cheap.
Excellent video Dylan :) , Bryer :) , yes that 1971 Plymouth Road Runner car doing well also would get grey bottle of STP Total Treatment fuel injection and carb cleaner in fuel tank too also first engine oil get Red Seal Gunk Engine Flush to for 5 minutes and both clean up and restore that 383 V8 motor like Rebuilt or Overhaul too feel like after! Plus transmission get black bottle of WYNNES brand of Trans Medic help it out lots too and bet soon do those I said try out and you say yes that's made 100 % difference!
Dylan ik you love the patina but this car deserves a full restoration. New decals and paint fix the rust and dents. Show this old girl what your made of and make her pretty for the ball

You should look into dry ice blasting it less messy than pressure wash and gives clean bare metal to paint.

Near the end of the video, interior shot while you were driving, I noticed a hole in the headliner by the back. Better check that out for possibly being a mouse house. You don't want to be breathing any muse poop. Hanatvirus can be deadly. Can't wait for the next video.

I am a huge fan of the 1971-1974 Plymouth Satellite/Roadrunners!! I like the '68-'70 as well, but not as much as the '71-'74!
This is my favorite year of Road Runner. The purest of the Fuselage style. I had an MPC model of it, and just fell in love.
Anybody work in brake manufacturing? I did ,those drums are called composite drums! We had to go to full cast drums even though the composites were cheaper to manufacture. I even think the composites were cheaper before finishing! All you do to a composite is turn shoe surface. and punch the pilot bores and stud holes punched out at the same time! Produced probably 1500 a shift ,3 shifts! Full cast drums require about 75% machining! The drums they made were for older ford rangers and older dodge dakotas ,rears of course! Also, the fit a taraus! And the newer rangers had full cast drums! Not bad since I haven't worked since 07!

When i was 16 in 1982, my first car was a 1972 Road runner GTX that i bought from my dad. I LOVE this body style!! I put thousands of miles on it over 5 years, then it was time to move on.
My next car was a 1974 Pontiac LeMans sport coupe - another favorite body style. Bought it at an auction for a decent price.
This beast was in really good condition and served me well for another 4 - 5 years.
I sure miss 'em. There's nothing like an old classic to cruise around in. 👍
The roads around your places there reminds me of dukes of hazzard, awesome landscapes, perfect for some old iron to lay rubber hehe
I so miss mine, I had a 71 road runner 383 750 4 barrel mine was four on the floor, had some big meaty tires, Deep, Dish, Crager wheels I got mine in 79 and I so miss it
The broadcast sheet on a '70 Challenger I had was behind the rear seat back, so hopefully you checked there too. I know, E-body vs B-body, but worth a look.
When I was younger I had a purple Plymouth fury with a hi po 383 and I loved that car. I traded it for a Ford torino 351 Cleveland. ❤

My dream car is a 70 Roadrunner, but I gotta say I am falling in love with the early to mid 70s Roadrunners. I would definitely take a 71 thru 72, but for the sake of actually owning a Roadrunner, I would own a 73 thru 74.
Aside from the car you're so fortunate to still have your dad, I lost mine two years ago and its been hard to keep focus on my own classic cars now. Great video as always! God Bless.

My favorite body style. First car was mom’s 73 Satellite that had sat for years and grandpa and I got running. It was a 318 4 door that had been sideswiped but it gave me great memories

I had pretty much the same car, the one thing I noticed immediately was how great it handled. Loved that car, unfortunately life happened and I sold it. Now I live vicariously on UA-cam in 71 rr’s. Love your channel and look forward to seeing more of this automive masterpiece!

It deserves electronic ignition upgrade. Fix the transmission and shift linkage. I don’t recall did you check the rear differential fluid on that posi traction? Overall I like this car.

Man that's a good lookin' car. Reminds me of the 71 Charger my buddy had in highschool. Always liked the front and rear end of these better.
Love the Rallye wheels!!! BTW, not sure if this was mentioned before. I believe you commented that this car would've had 15" Rallyes from the factory. Actually, if I remember correctly, the 71 RR would've had 14" steel wheel with poverty caps stock with 14" and 15" Rallyes being options. I had a 71 Super Bee that had 14" Rallyes on it stock. Just an FYI;. Keep up the great work!
Dylan, I think you nailed it with the 15 inch Rally wheels. The thing that amazes me is that the trim rings fit perfectly and the tires appear to match the width of the wheels. Where did you get them?
Typically, you'd use a 15x8 for a 275 60 tire and a 15 x 7 for a 235 60 tire. The reproduction guys never seem to have the right trim ring for the 15 x 8.
Also, most of the reproduction wheels are not "hub centric", a serious shortcoming.
Back in the day I had wheels custom made from 14 x 5 1/2 Rallys. I had some 15 x 8's and some 15 x 8 1/2 's made.
Basically, they cut the centers out of the 14 inch wheel and welded them in 15 inch bands that had the step up to use 14 inch centers. Many times 15 inch wheels use 14 inch centers.
All 15 inch Mopar Rallys from the factory use 14 inch centers.
Oh, If you don't need those 75-78 15 by 6 1/2's that came with the car let me know.

I like all the Roadrunners from the 68-72, but I gotta admits, the 70's body style is artwork. The curves & flow of them is really beautiful. I hope you do it up right. It deserves it.
This video brings back memories of my old roadrunner same model as this one I like to have her
