I am painting minis for the last 25 years. I ordered the mega set and should reach me on monday. A whole blank Deamon Army for Kings of War is waitíng on my desk for it to soak it up. Can't wait to see what I can do with that.
These speed paints are great. They came out during a period when I wasn't actively modelling, so I didn't know about them. When I tried them for the first time, I was really, really surprised at the result I got. Didn't take much extra effort to get my mini looking good, and it instilled confidence in me to try painting more figures, and figures with more and more details.
Are we sure that is the finished product? How did the marine suddenly get a winged design on the gun, and get a scope in the before and after? at the 22:00 mark?
Is the Marvel Crisis Protocol Tutorial video upload pending? I have checked the channel, can't seem to find it. cheers, thank you again for the content, sharing, and community support.
The fact that you can remove speed paints with a damp brush up to almost 6 hours later? That’s actually pretty cool. I would Use them like watercolors or gouache and go darker than I need and then remove some off the highest points or reactivates it with lighter colors for easy blending🤔 looks very interesting to me. 👍🏼
I don't think painting channels on youtube realise that us "poor" people CAN afford an airbrush AND the time to learn how to use one (hell if we have the money to buy GW miniatures we could buy a house) what stops us is space and an area for airflow.
Hi! I am loosing my mind trying to figure it out If it’s possible to paint with this fast painting technique a white Space Marine. Usino The same protocol but with white power armor. Thank you so much
Hello, I just stumbled on this video and thought it looked amazing! Do you reckon this method also works with Contrast or Vallejo Xpress? Since I don't have Speedpaint yet.
I'm new to the hobby and this video definitely is not noob friendly. I did an Army Painter Speedpaint Tutorial search (because the one coat and done is appealing for my gaming purposes), and I'm over 1/2 way through the video and haven't seen the Speedpaints used yet. I thought it was just prime and go. And you're using all these terms like glaze, matte finish (is that something like a varnish to protect the primer?), and mixing stuff in caps and I'm totally lost lol.
Looking for a Speedpaint tutorial on a Space Marine...reading the title...Wow, 20 minutes! How long does it take him to basecoat and drybr....nah, just another Airbrush vid...😢
I only have the starter set for these and tried them out a week ago on the miniatures for the Unsettled board game. I found that the gray in the starter set over plain white primer (which was how these paints were originally promoted) game out too light with very little variation. Saw a video ( might have been Goobertown) using a black base coat with white dry brush , similar to your method. Too dark. I ended up using a Uniform Gray base coat, then a white dry brush. Came out pretty nice. Not nearly as good as yours but decent. I didn’t know about the matte coat step, though I was using primer and a dry brush and not air, so I don’t think I had any issues with messing up those coats. Still, I want to lie these paints very much but I think I need more experience with them first. Also, the different colors behave differently from what I’ve seen; some work better than others I think.
Interesting that you mention to NOT load up your brush; some other Speedpaint videos recommended loading up the brushes to let gravity draw the paint down, especially on Space Marine shoulder pads.
Is the Ultramarine primed (actual Primer Paint) with Black? Are the Values Highlighting using normal acrylic paint/ink? In other words, the only formal Primer paint is the black? cheers, Thank you for the content! appreciated.
@@spikeybitstv Sorry, I was asking is the figure primed black with Primer Paint? and are the Value Highlights using Primer Paint or regular acrylic paint?
@@spikeybitstv ok cool. Yea I tried with airbrush primer yesterday and it just didn’t seem to go on with even enough coverage. My other friend just zenithalled his with liquitex white ink so I may try that next. Trying to move into airbrushing instead of rattle canning.
Great tutorial but I am still hesitant to buy these paints since the colors all seem to be very bright and give minis a cartoonish look if you know what I mean. It works for Space Marines but I would like to see a tutorial on how to paint something like zombies where you want a dark, dirty look on your miniatures. I still can't see myself achieving this with Army Painter Speedpaints, so if you can come up with a convincing approach I would very much appreciate it!
I’d go watch the go over town hobbies view to see how all the colors look. Conversely a drybush over black will leave more desk areas and look way darker overall prob just what you’re looking for.
MegaSets were all already sold out when I went to order... so I had to settle with a starter set and individuals of each one missing. I'll have to see how well the magic blue matches "Reaper Dragon Blue" to see if I can get away with using it for the rest of my Ultra Marine Army, but mostly looking forward to getting to the Crisis Protocol minis I've had knocking around since Xmas. Being able to paint up 3D prints quickly will make for more colorful DnD games as well!
@@spikeybitstv People have reporting bleeding through well after drying. I wouldn't even matte varnish with this stuff. I had the mega set on preorder but cancelled due to these undisclosed issues.
All the comments here waffling on and factoring in waiting time for drying and the like... utter foolishness. Use a bit of common sense, it's 20 mins of painting effort, not 20 mins setting a stop watch from start to go. Who the hell ever factors in drying time, or expects this to be 20 mins start to finish. Bottom line, thus tute is all about showing how speedpaints can be used as a single coat solution with some care taken to the undercoat to provide a natural gradient in speedpaint colour. And it does a great job at that. And to those other fools whining about setup and clean-up of an airbrush, totally overinflating the actual time it should take... pull your head in or learn how to be quick and effective with the airbrush as a tool.
I've been playing with speed paints and have to say the whole reactivation thing hasn't really happened to me. I tried over a zenithal, I was happy with the gradients but everything felt to dark. I've upped the lightness to a brighter white and less contrast and whilst better no where near as smooth or vibrant as yours. Over straight white it sometimes feel too bright, although I'm sat looking at a model I'm thinking looks pretty awesome at the moment. Do you think the matte seal before adding speedpaint helps the paint move better than if you just did it over the zenithal and wash?
@@spikeybitstv I've done quite a few minis where each section has had different colours and not noticed. I am picking colours light to dark though. I have to admit though now I know about it, I have used it blend areas.
@@spikeybitstv I've posted some of my playing with speed paints and observations on AP's hobby brigade Facebook page. Any advice for brightening up the zenithal / not getting a dirty look?
I'm glad you made this video ! I was really excited for speed paints , but after using them , I really wasn't happy with their finish mainly because of how ugly my zenithal was looking underneath. Really gotta put the work in on the back end to make these look great !
Maybe it was because too many people labeled these paints as contrast killers but the outrage so many people showed about the reactivation issue made no sense to me. It felt like they had gone to the hardware store and purchased a screwdriver and got mad when it wasn’t very effective when used as a hammer. It’s just like anything else, products have their own strengths and weaknesses. You just have to figure out how to use those properties to your advantage.
FW ink, not GW ink🤣🤣 i already own the full range of contrast paints, scalecolor instant potions and the warcolors antíthesi. So i waiting for my local vendor to get the mega sett with all the colors in stock and i will pick up the AP speed paints to
The reactivation is an issue for people because amateur painters will always not get the application perfect first time. They will want to locally correct errors. Otherwise fantastic video and gorgeous model.
Respectfully disagree. As I showed in the video if you make a mistake… just wipe it away and redo it. That is amazing you can just easily fix a mistake lol.
So to look amazing with speedpaint or contrast you need 300 steps to paint before applying speedpaint vs 300 steps after base coating with the normal paints. It looks the same effort and time to me. I apply the contrast or speedpaint above the primer and that's it. That is what these paints were made to do.
Rob, I love ya brother, but reconsider the title of the video. Speed Paint Batch Painting. Not 20 minute marines! That literally was a two day process. You’re better than click bait!
You can literally do the same thing for just one miniature in about 20 minutes as directed my dude. You save MORE time doing it in batches of multiple minis cause the models dry while you paint the next one.
@@spikeybitstv The airbrushing is a fraction of the time. Factor in setting up the airbrush, prep, cleaning it afterwards, waiting for the ink to dry and then, only then, can you begin to paint. Believe you said you left the mini overnight to dry before using the speedpaints. So, way more than 4 hours. Great looking mini and full credit to you for how it looks, but your title is a lie. Here's my challenge to you. Live up to your clickbait. Go from bare plastic to finished mini in 20 minutes. Then, I'll be impressed.
@@greywulfslair By setting up the airbrush do you mean turning it on and putting ink in it? Cleaning is less than a minute, as for drying... lol you know heat guns exist bro? Like if you absolutely have to paint one mini in 20 minutes you can, however, it would be sensible if you did them in batches so they dried while you were working on the next... Here's my challenge to you. Master the hobby basics like priming or using and cleaning an airbrush before you throw hobby shade.
@@spikeybitstv Friend, I've been in this hobby since the 1980s and known the hobby basics for longer than you've been alive. You spent two days painting a mini then claimed it only took you 20 minutes. Yes you could do it much faster, but you didn't then made a lie about it in the title. You're a great guy and know your stuff. People respect you. Cheap and inaccurate clickbait titles weaken your content and make you out to be less than you are. Don't do that. You're better than that, Rob.
As I mentioned in the video, recording takes longer than the content. I simply split up the painting to accommodate my recording schedule. If it bothers you so much that you have been in the hobby so long and can not produce something similar I would suggest practicing more rather than lashing out at me with wild accusations. I am not your friend you have clearly come here to shit on what I do with a bunch of gatekeeping rhetoric because what you don’t like how I look, you think I’m too young to be in the hobby etc… this content has been one of my most requested pieces it clearly works and people are enjoying it. Stop being the problem and be the solution.
I guess army painter are quite happy to lose out on the massive market of people who would use speed paint in other ways, and they made sure that they wouldn't buy it by making it unusable for anyone doing more than one coat of paint. Makes sense, or they somehow didn't consider that people would want to use their paints differently, that makes almost as much sense.
Yeah how dare they design something to ACTUALLY work one specific way so people can use the product as directed for fast and easy results. Who makes something to work just one particular way, and expects it to catch on... The absolute nerve!
So what’s ur saying is your the guy that reads instructions on how to use things then gets mad when they don’t work or you get poor results using it another way 😂
"So, I hear you, 'I don't want to buy an airbrush'........ let me then tell you that I don't care about your financial situation, lack of any space with proper ventilation for it, or any other reasons why you don't have an airbrush. Let me tell you that you're wrong, and then produce a tutorial you can't use, after making you aware that I don't care you can't use it." Disliked, won't stop by the channel again.

Being able to paint up 3D prints quickly will make for more colorful DnD games as well!
Be sure to check your local store too!!
an edge highlight as end step would be perfect, still cool job.
I mean you still can just make sure you wait for it to dry 😉
Most involved 20mins ever
Remember, a lot of viewers asked for this video, and its super easy to do as well. Sorry its not for you :)
If used as directed "reactivation" isn't even an issue. That's why no one even noticed it, we used one coat, lol.
Any advice for brightening up the zenithal / not getting a dirty look?
go hard with the basecoat... HARD!
My highlord blue looks nothing like this. It's way darker and super streaky
Would use cloudburst blue for ultramarines
Ohhh maybe@
Great video , I have been trying to find the video from goobertown to see how in depth he goes on his under value painting but can’t seem to find
Here ya go ua-cam.com/video/zsHGUAAi420/v-deo.html
Also sorry do you think this value highlighting would work on 150mm figures , sorry new to miniature style of painting
@@jimallen4382 oh for sure!
What psi did you find best for the white ink. I was having some issues with mine getting pushed a little too strong.
I think it keeps it around 25-30?
I want an Airbrush, but my wife said "No."
"tickles your hobby pickle" lol that got me
Let’s go!
Miss your live twitch painting
Miss u too bro!
I'm glad you made this video ! I was really excited for speed paints , but after using them , I really wasn't happy with their finish mainly because of how ugly my zenithal was looking underneath. Really gotta put the work in on the back end to make these look great !
Dope I’m glad you liked it, I hope it helps.
do you give the model 2 magic blue layers? seem like mine is abit "thin"
No all one layer and done.
Hahah what kind of Chcolate milk you drink? All joke aside I like the chocolate milk idea.
A lot of people mindlessly listen a little too much these days IMHO to negative rhetoric…
I'm stoked I ordered the mega set 🇨🇦
its great!
What's up with the deep red lipstick you have on?
Lol dont wear lipstick, just hard to edit my colors right...
@@spikeybitstv fair enough. Thought it might just be something new your trying out.
yeah 20 mins paint time but 20 mins waiting time for the paint to dry after changing colours.
Just got my set of speedpaints cant wait to try them.
FW ink, not GW ink🤣🤣 i already own the full range of contrast paints, scalecolor instant potions and the warcolors antíthesi. So i waiting for my local vendor to get the mega sett with all the colors in stock and i will pick up the AP speed paints to
To be fair I said DW as in daeler Rawnwy. I think it’s called but that is not what I was using :)
Oh yeah totally for sure I mentioned that in there or you can just do a quick dry brush and it’ll make your stuff look hundred times better too
Rob, I love ya brother, but reconsider the title of the video.
How to speed paint... Says "leaves it over night"
speedpaint video: :D
using an airbrush: :/
Army painter don't sell to canadians..
Turns out the secret to painting minis in just 20 minutes is the four hours of prep you do beforehand. Who knew.
If it takes you four hours to do less than 5 min of airbrush work, you’re doing it wrong. Who knew…
I have no interest in air brushing wish people didn't shove it down my throat every video lol.
Good video otherwise
I guess army painter are quite happy to lose out on the massive market of people who would use speed paint in other ways, and they made sure that they wouldn't buy it by making it unusable for anyone doing more than one coat of paint.
Makes sense, or they somehow didn't consider that people would want to use their paints differently, that makes almost as much sense.
Yeah how dare they design something to ACTUALLY work one specific way so people can use the product as directed for fast and easy results. Who makes something to work just one particular way, and expects it to catch on... The absolute nerve!
Contrast paint doesn't reactive though?
@@biome3 Lol contrast was supposed to work it ONE THICK COAT remember? Same directions as Speedpaint, it doesn't IMHO...
Good thing it can be used in more than one way like standard acrylic paint.
So what’s ur saying is your the guy that reads instructions on how to use things then gets mad when they don’t work or you get poor results using it another way 😂
20 minutes to paint. 45 minutes to wash out the airbrush after every color you run through it.
it has never taken me that long, but you will save more time by batch painting these for sure.
You don't know how to clean a airbrush if it takes you that long.
It's called hyperbole you pedantic nerds
"So, I hear you, 'I don't want to buy an airbrush'........ let me then tell you that I don't care about your financial situation, lack of any space with proper ventilation for it, or any other reasons why you don't have an airbrush. Let me tell you that you're wrong, and then produce a tutorial you can't use, after making you aware that I don't care you can't use it." Disliked, won't stop by the channel again.
