Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT | 10,000 mile - 1 Year Review

  • This is a quick review of the Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT (ATs). I've had these for about one year and put on only 10,000 miles due to 2020 being crazy. Previously I had the Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx hybrid tires in the same exact 275/70-R17 size and E-rating. These tires have been great for me thus far and suit my needs perfectly. I really like what Cooper is doing with their tire technology, but there are still many great offerings from BF-Goodrich, Toyo, General Grabber, etc. I love me some mud terrain tires, but I had to be honest about my needs and get an all-terrain.

    Have the XLT3 on my Ford F250 6.7 diesel FX4. As quiet and smooth as my Michelin AT2. Did took 1,000 miles to settle down. No noise or roar. Really good in the dry and sure footed in rain. In the past 2 weeks we've had more than our usual snow. We've gotten a foot of snow and I've crunched around in 4x4 with no problem. I deep fluffy snow just a bit of wheel spin clears them out. Have not been in deep mud and only ran through graded trails but no complaints there. Good mileage and wear.

    Good info, thanks for sharing. If you could give us an update on your experience with these tires and if you're still running them. I'm about ready to put new tires on my 4Runner. Currently running KO2's E rated. They've been good tires overall. I have about 44k miles on them, decent amount of tread left but the wet traction is starting to suffer at this point, and I don't like to run tires down too low. I'm in the DC area as well, rarely off-road and value good on road manners and wet traction. These seem like they'd be a good option. I was also looking at the Falken Wildpeak's.

      I actually traded this truck in with only about 20,000 mi on those tires. They were flawless the whole time. I ended up getting another 5th gen 4Runner and put the Cooper discover AT3s 4S on. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I currently run the AT3 XLT on my Land Cruiser. I am very happy with them. I am now thinking on changing my tires on my, other truck, the FJ Cruiser. I'm thinking on going with the S/T Maxx. However, after hearing your thoughts on it and realizing we probably drive on similar situations (90% on-road, 10% off-road, importance to wet traction), I might stick with AT3's again. Is there anything else that could sway me back to the S/T Maxx over the AT3 LT or XLT?

    • @ThomperBeThompin
      @ThomperBeThompin  3 роки тому +3

      It really depends on your situation. Like I said I've got a winch, Max tracks, and I'm usually always off-roading with another vehicle so I'm not too concerned about getting stuck on any obstacles or anything. That makes my need for a hybrid tire or mud tire even less so. The only reason I would consider going with the hybrid tire is for the slightly better puncture resistance in the sidewall and the slightly better traction in the slippery stuff. I will likely continue choosing between all terrains for my daily driver / weekend warrior vehicle, and mud terrains for any dedicated off-roader. Good luck in your choice man, I know it's a tough one because tires are really expensive!

    Thanks for the video. I’m leaning towards the XL for my f 150 over the lease aggressive coolers. The ones your brother has. Is the ride quality a little stiffer more harsh on the XL’s compared to your brothers? I don’t need the extra load capacity but I do like the look of the XL’s better. Thanks for the video.

    • @ThomperBeThompin
      @ThomperBeThompin  Рік тому

      I would highly recommend going with the 4S. The XL's definitely look a little bit better, but because they're an e-rating they are much heavier and stiffer. The extra weight will zap a little bit of power on acceleration and fuel economy because you're turning those heavier tires. And being stiffer they contribute to a rougher ride. Additionally, the 4S has more siping and a better tread compound for wet and cold weather. All that said, I think either the 4s or LTs or XLTs will be great and I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. For my new daily driver, a tundra, I'll be sticking with the 4S's since I will not be doing any crazy off-roading.

Also, in my opinion, there's not too much difference in stiffness from the seat of the pants feel between a c rated and e-rated tire. They are both light truck tires designed for heavier duty and higher capacities. Now the difference between a c load and a passenger tire is probably pretty noticeable. I honestly didn't think these were too stiff for this setup. That said, not as comfortable as a passenger tire for sure.

      I'm certainly no expert on the snowflake rating and how that's achieved, but from a little bit of research it seems like it could be one of those things companies have to actively go out and pursue through testing paid out of their own pocket and such. So just because the tire lacks a snowflake symbol may not mean it isnt great in the snow. I mean, I would highly doubt the compound is any different between the sizes and the XLT tire. But I'm not positive about that, I know there's minute differences and speed ratings and stuff so I wonder if that plays into it.

      How do these compared to your older michelins?

      @@ThomperBeThompin the michelins were great tires for the northern michigan roads in all conditions. Not great on the trails but decent. So far the coopers are great. We had a couple of ice/snow/rain days and they did great. The tread is a bit more aggressive so the ride isn't quite as smooth, but nothing really noticable. I haven't really tested them off road yet but trout camp is in 3 weeks, they will get quite a workout that week. The coopers look cooler and i think will do better on the trails. The michelins lasted forever and are excellent on the road, decent on the trails.

      They do throw rocks like my Michelin AT2s. I carry a long nose curved end pliers and they are perfect for pulling rocks out if the tread.

    All tires have wet weather ⛈️☔traction rating. There should be AA or A rating on the side wall. AA is best A , B, C. Coopers also give you best value for $ 💰

    I am not running Goodyear AT tires anymore, They don't make a All Terrain that is worth a shit on wet roads. These coopers FAR out perform them on wet roads.
