  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Master Mode is the game's "Hard Mode". Similar to past game modes like Hero Mode or Second Quest. In this video I go over why I don't like Master Mode, and how the series' hard mode has changed throughout the many Zelda titles. A Retrospective/Review of the series' many versions of hard mode. From Second Quest, to Hero Mode to Master Mode.

I think master mode was a great challenge except for the master trials; those are basically hell. Everything else is doable with some effort, and feels good to eventually beat. That said, I prefer normal mode.

I've seen tons of reviews for breath of the wild, but this is only the second time I've seen a discussion about master mode. Totally agree about the health regen: it totally ruins many different strategies that can make the game more fun and basically requires direct combat instead of creative solutions to encounters. Thunderblight and calamity gannon get way too many opportunities for free healing, especially in gannon's second phase. Limiting cooked meals, nerfing full health recovery meals, and preventing you from eating raw food probably would have been a better way to make the game more challenging.

Finally someone brings it up. My first playthrough on master mode was hell when you first start out due to the weapons not scaling with the enemy's, you'd wail on them and then the durability of your sword would break, and not even a couple seconds later the enemy would start regening health again. It was hell, but once you get past the first boss, and the world opens up you can manage it.

Getting to and unlocking the Great Fairies is the most important part of MM. Get the Soldiers armor and then max it out by any means necessary. From there just memorize a few key weapon/resource locations and you're set (dragon parts, Iron shroom, durians & royal weapons). As for MM trials, you just gotta go in knowing you have to use very specific strategies in certain rooms, or just skip it entirely.

I actually found the Master Trials/Trial of the Sword perfectly doable in Master Mode. Nintendo helped out a bit by leaving out some extra powerful weapons laying around in the open, just for Master Mode. The main exception to this for me is the notorious Floor 10 in the Beginning Trials. I've only ever beaten it by cheesing the AI of the Silver Lizals with sneakstrike chains.

Hey Zelda master I’ve noticing something in your video
You almost never use arrows in your footage, and in the thunderblight section you considered stocking up on arrows “over preparing”
,Arrows are some of the most powerful tools in botw when used correctly and efficiently.
While yes enemy regen is annoying
A single arrow and halt their regen for a few seconds allowing you to get in for your attacks.
Also you glossed over flying platforms
Flying platforms are one of the most important changes in master mode, one of the flying platforms near the great plateau has a 38 power (I’m pretty sure it’s 38 power haven’t played i a while) heavy weapon with critical hit up, this is the most powerful weapon you can get for a long time unless you kill the plateau lynel, which makes master mode a lot easier.

  • @dannyjorde2677
    @dannyjorde2677 2 роки тому +12

The only problem I have with the master mode is that it assumes you've already played the normal mode, and it doesn't bother to hold back surprises, because in the normal mode the sequence of events makes more sense in the story, you discover things more naturally, while the master mode, for instance, places a freaking Lynel in the Great Plateau, which means that that enemy will no longer be a surprise when you go to the Zora region.

I think it would have been cool if the enemies just healed the same way you do. Have a stockpile of food they can eat to restore health.

I know how everyone (and myself) feels regarding Master Mode (health regen, gold enemies, weapon durability, double damage, and the delay on how the guardians fire their beams), it's tedious but not as bad.
This is exactly why I make ABSOLUTELY sure I find high powered food and materials to help (especially with carrying the high attack/defense boost WITH a 30 minute duration from the dragon's horn to the TooS) and getting the Great Fairies to enhance the armor before doing anything.

I, personally, enjoyed (and still enjoy) Master Mode. HOWEVER it does limit you to a certain play style. My experience was blitzing towards the Master Sword but blasting through 40 shrines ASAP then doing the Master Trials immediately after. The trials were easy enough (albeit stressful) in Normal Mode and only really gave me a lot of trouble in the Beginning Trials. After that, the next two were very manageable and downright easy IF you know a thing or two. For example the fact that Talos can be melted or cooled off, elemental enemies like Wizrobes and lizalfos get one shot by their opposing element, and ancient arrows delete enemies in one shot and can kill any guardian with one shot to the eye. There are guides online that break down every room and it’s really not that hard imo.
All that being said, it’s nice knowing I conquered the hardest challenge the game can throw at me. I see my glowing sword, my Hylian Shield, a screen full of hearts and maxed out armor and that stupid little Triforce in the corner makes it all feel even better. I agree it could’ve been done better and is “artificial“ difficulty in a lot of ways, but you were very loosey goosey with the word “impossible”

During the Master Mode Champions Ballad; Thunderblight Ganon was easily the hardest challenge. I found that the most effective way to take him on was to consume a level 3 mighty meal before entering the challenge, as the stat boost comes with you into battle. In addition, I honestly don't know how I would have completed the challenge without Urbosa's Fury.

Master mode is really unbalanced and has cheap difficulty. They could have made enemies with faster reactions, removing the time bokoblins spend just looking at you instead of attacking. Do not allow healing during combat. Change enemy placement in the world. Change shrine positions. These are just some ideas that would really make an interesting master mode. The DLC, not just the master mode, have a lot of balance issues, like the new armors which are too powerful too soon, the bike that makes horses obsolete, and the damage enhancement of the master sword. So it really shows they did not carefully add the new content and made sure it fits in the original balance of the game, and once more added a lazy “hero mode”. The only “hero modes” that are worthy are the ocarina of time, and the first legend of zelda.

When master mode came out it was all about survival, enemies hitting you once with yellow hearts & you're dead. While master mode is difficult I when starting fresh in the game I actually liked it because it made me think multiple times how to defeat a enemy when dying. Something about the game being incredible difficult made me more pissed I couldn't get through Master mode. If breath of the wild 2 takes place in the sky AN Hyrule I think it would be interesting if the sky islands in Master mode would move around the sky constantly to make the sky feel mor alive & challenging for the player.
At least Breath of the wilds master mode was easier than ZeldaII. . .or was it?

I enjoyed master mode for the most part normal mode is far too easy for me.The only part of master mode I find poorly balanced is floor 10 in the trial of the sword with the two silver lizalfos that combined with regenerating health makes that room very tricky.
The rest of master mode I didn't feel was incredibly hard if you already had extensive knowledge of the game.I was able to defeat every enemy on the great plateau including the lynel. For the blue and black bokoblins killing them with magnesis is the best option. The floating platforms also give you enough good weapons to kill the lynel on the great plateau.
Master mode really encouraged me to try other combat options I previously ignored in normal mode.I really learned to love stealth after my playthrough because sneakstrikes do 8 times the damage. With a 100+ power weapon,an attack boost, and sneakstriking will allow to kill almost every enemy in the game in one shot excluding gold moblins which you can finish off quickly after they are severely weakening from the stealth attack.
Master mode isn't perfect and regenerating health is a bad design choice with a game that has weapons with limited durability, but it does enough to spice up the early game.

Link needs to take a damn martial arts class!
I fully agree with all of the arguments in this video. I have enjoyed playing the "Second Quest" and other advanced modes of all the previous games, and creating my own version for Zelda games that didn't explicitly offer a greater challenge (playing with only 3 hearts). While tackling the game in such a way was difficult, it was also fun. The weapon breaking and monster healing elements of Breath of the Wild Master Mode make the game beyond difficult: they make it INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING and TEDIUS. Ok, I'm all for fighting with sticks, but when they break so quickly, and the enemy remains with so much health (being the next version up), and then starts to heal??? Forget about it.

the weapon system is like an economy of sorts.
In normal mode, your lose weapons at generally the same rate you loot/find new ones.
In master mode, this ratio is no longer balanced, leaving you with less weapons than you start with after each enemy encounter.
This seems like a huge mistake on their part because the system was clearly designed around the player never running out of weapons.

  • @ponspectorstillwedie4579
    @ponspectorstillwedie4579 2 роки тому

The absolute worst offender of the enemy healing thing has got to be those damn lizalfos! Those things just keep running away from you when you try to approach them, and they start regenerating almost immediately after you stop attacking them. Which is funny, because for the most part the game was good about giving some enemies longer grace periods.
Bokoblins healing after just a couple of seconds makes sense, because they are generally pretty easy to keep wailing on. Lynels and Blight bosses on the other hand, give you a longer grace period before they start recharging to account for the fact they move around more often and stay out of your reach more often. So long as you loose an arrow now and again, the regeneration shouldn't be too overwhelming.
Lizalfos though, they start healing about as quickly as bokoblins, even though they are much more slippery targets. As someone who actually has completed the Trial of the Sword in Master Mode, I'm not even kidding when I say that the 'beginner trials' were so much more trouble than the harder ones because of all the lizalfos segments. Specifically the ones that are mostly flooded with water, because the fu**ing things keep retreating into it and heal while bombaring you with their icky spit attacks. And TotS doesn't even give you enough arrows for killing them at range to be a viable option.
Also, the fact that they can swim is a pain the butt, because my usual MM strategy of blowing bokoblins into a body of water (,or off a cliff,) with a deku leaf to defeat them instantly and take their weapons won't work on them. Phooey!
TL;DR: Lizalfos in BotW Master Mode are the bane of my existence and my hatred for them shall never dissapate.

Even in the original version when I first played, I found Thunderblight Ganon almost impossible to beat because it was the 2nd or 3rd Devine Beast I had faced and I only had like 8 hearts. I got so frustrated until my niece she couldn’t beat him without the master sword. So I made it my mission to get 13 hearts and cook lots of hearts restoring food, and I beat him in like 1 minute, before he even started with the magnetic pillars. I can’t imagine him in hero mode. I’d break tons of controllers. Without the MS, I found Thunderblight way harder than the actual calamity ganon. For him I just sat at the perfect distance and waited for him to shoot his laser and shield deflect back on him, then run over while he’s down and get as many blows in with the master sword and it was fast and easy. I didn’t know there was a second battle on horseback on the ground, I’m not good at horse battle. But Zelda gives you unlimited shock arrows and all you have to do is run around and shoot these giant yellow damage points and he’s down in minutes

Visually, coming from a big city who's skies and horizon are dusty and not so blue, anything like those octoroch balloon creatures polluting the sky with pink , purple, and brown platforms are slightly bad for me, because I play BOTW for escapism, anesthisis (numbing down my mind after a stressful day or week of what¿) The skies are lovely in normal mode IMHO , even when it rains, coming from my desert real life existence.

Yes, the healing breaks some of the master trials, especially that floor with the lizalfos who can just go in the water and heal , so the only way to really beat it is with sneak strikes. Another terrible master mode inclusion is when guardians randomly delay their laser. WHY? When it's random, it doesn't test your skill, just punishes you for no reason.

  • @jasoncarter1869

The weapon break mechanics are more annoying than any other aspect of the game.
Edit: didn't realize that this was going to be a topic. I feel the concept was fine but the execution wasn't very creative to start with.
Weapons break and that's cool. But sometimes the solution is to just carry more of the exact same weapon. Finding them just becomes busy work. It's just time consuming and not in a fun way.

    • @dannyjorde2677
      @dannyjorde2677 2 роки тому +1

That simply isn't true. Weapons breaking is a great game mechanic because it allows you to discover and use new weapons that you've never tried and also prevents you from cheesing the game with a bunch of super powerful weapons.

I feel item durability vs enemy health was always an issue. Even in regular mode, I felt so many weapons broke TOO FAST vs even total shrub enemies, and then they gave so little reward. In Master Mode, healing enemies just made it worse. I felt I never got as good at the combat system in part because it never felt worth it to commit to fights with enemies that all carried junk weapons I didn't want, knowing I'd just break mine. Maybe if there were Malice-tainted soldiers; enemies carrying traveler or knight gear, I'd have cared more. I was also never so happy about the Master Trial DLC as when I learned it could be an exploit, even when finished, to recharge the dwindling Master Sword, so as not to need to wait 10 long minutes. That was always my biggest problem with the Master Sword; it wasn't that it wasn't simply Indestructible, but that once you used it even a few times, you almost needed to just commit to clobbering things over the head until it broke, and then go find a safe place to wait, or use other stuff. No amount of rest, time, or mechanics would cause the Master Sword to regenerate UNTIL it was wholly depleted, and then it was the longest ten minutes in the game, each time. Luckily, the game warns you about depletion, so I could just fast travel to the pedestal, start the trial, port back out, and refreshed Sword, since it had been removed from the inventory. I feel like I was cheating, but I felt like I had to, sometimes, since some weapons were just SO fragile, and took several swings to best some foes.
I know MM TotS was tough; a challenge beyond my ability or will, but a couple of years ago, I did watch another UA-camr play through it both ways, and while he was pretty good, he was also pretty clumsy, at times, but still made it through. Not within my ability, but it was fun to watch.
It will be interesting, and frightening, to see how much of these mechanics the dequel keeps. What will be breakable, and how quickly, or how easily replaced.

I think It's a combination of the fact that the enemies have greater durability the fact that they heal and the fact that the weapons durability doesn't scale into Master mode to make it more fair. In the trial of the sword in normal mode although you are given a scarce amount of weapons in still more than enough for you to complete that trial because the weapons that you're giving have appropriate durability and damage output to handle the trial but you're given the exact same weapons with the exact same durability on Master mode version but since the enemies now he'll and have greater durability it makes it so much harder and borderline bullshit that I completely agree that these were not playtested.

The only part which was tediously annoying was level 10 off the trial of the sword on master mode. But once you master headshotting the blue lizard and sneak striking the silver ones it's all good.

Maybe have monsters need to bathe in malace or eat to heal. Introduce weapon repair & have some type of hand to hand system, so an unarmed Link can punch monsters. It would deal less damage than any weapon & deplete Link’s hearts with every punch & be a lot of dodging and flurry rushing.

Master Mode should change the gameplay experience. Difficulty is one thing, but add new mechanics to the mode. Here are some examples with how they could have done more:
    ▪︎Mirror the game.
▪︎Change the Devine Beast temples layout (Similar to Oceania Time 3D Master Quest).
    ▪︎Double Enemy Damage.
    ▪︎Max Level Enemies Spawn.
▪︎Replaced Healing Mechanic: Enemies have different bonuses
    - HP Regen: After not taking damage for 10 seconds, they rapidly regain (up to a maximum of) 25% of their total HP over a 10 second period.
    - Glass Cannon: Enemies deal up to a maximum of double damage based on the amount of HP they lost.
    - Etc. There are many possible ideas.
▪︎If you have a Fairy or Murphy's Grace, overkill damage is carried over to the next life.
▪︎Healing Bonuses from food are 50% effective, with limited inventory slots (that can be expanded with seeds).
▪︎Second Wind Mechanic: Since the game is unforgiving, we need to give the player a break time to time. When losing all HP with no fairys \ Murphy's Grace available, Link will enter Second Wind. Based on the amount of overkill damage, they will have to wait up to a maximum of 60 seconds seconds before they recover 3 hearts. During this time, they cannot use healing items but can still gain positive effects from food (damage increase, speed, etc.) Additionally, the player deals double damge to enemies for the duration. Taking any damage during second wind results in an immediate game over.
Master Mode done correctly. However, BoTW isn't all that bad, just annoying sometimes when faced with an impossible scenario (*looking at you Master Sword Trials*).

I think Master Mode is only ill balanced in the beginning. In late game, the enemies have so much health and power that you can really only kill them with top-tier weapons like the powered up Master Sword and can still easily get one shot. This is better than in normal mode, where late game is so trivial. In Master Mode, there is really a reason to get those top-tier weapons and stay alert all the time. I would say Master Mode is even better balanced in late game.
Master Mode is also where BotW's versatile combat really shines, as you need to be tactical and think about what you are doing, not just heading into situations without thinking. Health regen isn't a problem for me, because the system is so versatile that you don't need to stick to killing the enemies. You can still obtain weapons without engaging in combat (stealing weapons when the enemies are asleep, drown them, use electricity to disarm them, etc), or you can use stealth strikes to deal a lot of damage. Master Mode is all about playing the game differently for me. Aside from the Beginning Trials of the Sword Trial, Master Mode isn't even that hard, and for the most part it's more exciting and it makes all your preps in food, heart and stamina, and armor more worthwhile.
I prefer Master Mode over normal mode, but I agree that the early game could use some adjustment in balancing. The only problem for me is the Beginning Trials, as it requires very specific tactics and is way too punishing as a first trial. I also agree that they didn't put too much effort in changing the map and enemy locations.

I wouldnt mind weapon durability if there was a way to fix it. Heck we could invest RUPEES into buying things to fix durability on the fly. (think Monster Hunter series)
There is nothing wrong with us wanting to fix weapons or going back to fix things.
I know some defenders will say: "BUT THEN YOU WONT USE ITEMS YOU FIND AND JUST GRAB THE STRONGEST WEAPONS AND KEEP FIXING THEM!"
Well MMO's find 3 ways around it.
1: Level limit. Wich guess what... the Master Sword technically is with how much hearts you need to pull it out! So why not need x-amount of stamina wheel? An idea.
2: Making them more expensive with more rarer materials to fix it. And considdering how much worthless stuff we pick up during BoTW and sometimes easily pile up rupees... this is not a bad idea.
3: Fixing costs time in a moment you shouldnt. (Again Monster Hunter techniques here)
Overall Master Mode points out the flaw of durability and becomes the "Paper Mario Sticker Star" Problem.
I don't wanna fight to waste resources for a fight that will have me go back to replace those resources. Only here these resources are needed to get the resource to begin with.
This is why fixing wouldn't be a huge issue. You like your amazing weapon? Hunt those monster parts for "Whetstones" to fix your items on the fly.
Suddenly you want to kill and hunt monsters cause they keep your best weapons around!

I'm doing a new playthrough of master mode ATM. I couldn't imagine playing the game in its standard mode now, once you reach a certain point, i.e upgraded armour and maxed out master sword, it kind of comes to a plateau and now even the strongest enemies are easy.. on the contrary I'd kinda like to to be a bit harder..

I found the regen particularly tricky against the water Blight (especially as I usually target them first) and the first trial of the sword. To be specific, in the lizalfos room where they can hang out in the water and you can barely touch them!
I kind of figured though if I could do it anyone could, as I'm no pro-gamer...but it was a war of attrition and to be honest, I don't think I'd rush to play Master Mode again. Though gold enemies are a good challenge.

Thank you for making this video, I thought I was the only one who fricking HATED how fast enemies healed!! I literally got all the way to champions ballad Va Ruta and then got stuck, facing waterblight Ganon and finally rage quit, I have 100% botw normal mode but master mode is to stupid, I have played normal mode all the way through at least 10 times and loved it so it really disappointed me to have master mode be this way, when it’s not my fault that the AI sucks. I love a challenge. It's the reason why I played the Dark Souls series. Problem I had though with MM is it just came off as obnoxious rather then challenging. Between the health regen and dealing with weapon durability it just wasn't a fun experience. Then don't even get me started on the Master trials. Respect to people who can do that on MM.

I did it and IMO it's only the first areas that are hard, up to the stage with the silver lizalfos which is by far the hardest.
My strategy in the first few levels is to just use wooden sticks to set fires and burn everything alive and start collecting weapons and food.
The silver lizalfos I don't even know what the intended way to beat them was but my strategy was save a bunch of spears and stunlock them to oblivion.
I had to be very careful I never broke a spear unless I was positive I would kill it, because the danger of knocking them in the water or aggroing more than one was just insane.
So I switched between 3 or 4 spears stunlocking them to death and it took me forever to even come up with that strategy.
After that the master trials is pretty free

Hey there! I really enjoyed this video! I watched the playthrough you had started before on Master Mode and I was curious why you had stopped, but now I totally get it. That sounds stupidly frustrating!!
The best way to describe my skill level for BOTW is me getting through the middle trial of the sword (after a few tries) just to fall off the stairs going up to pull the Master Sword again. With this background, I don't know how much my opinion would count, as we can all safely assume I have never even been tempted to play Master Mode. That being said, I would think the main reason Master Mode is a little...underdeveloped when comparing it to other Zelda Hero Modes, etc., is probably in the development itself. I know N O T H I N G about how games are made, but given how long it took to make BOTW and how ding dang HUGE it is, and how there are no flipperty flippin' loading screens while cruising through Hyrule on the Master Cycle, along with a bajillion other things, my guess would be that there wasn't time. I think they bit off more than they could chew, which isn't surprising seeing how there really isn't another game quite like this. It was a pioneer. Not saying that maybe skimping on awesomeness is right, but I can only imagine all the crazy things they would have wanted to do for a Master Mode that just weren't able to be worked in, so they needed something easy. Which would explain why there probably wasn't a lot of actual in-game testing.
Whatever the reason, I really liked this video! I had no idea about the other Hero Modes and such, since BOTW is the first Zelda game I've REALLY played, so that was really cool and interesting to see!!
I hope your holiday is aMaZiNg!!
(OH! That Link thumbs-up animation is 👌, btw. Thanks for this vid!! Keep up the awesomeness!)
