- Link has been known as one of gaming's most iconic Silent Protagonists. But what is the reason behind his silence? In this video we go over the actual reason in why Link never speaks. Thanks to Zelda's diary in Breath of the Wild, we are able to uncover the exact reason. But I think the true reason behind Link's lack of speech is something we knew all along...

Nintendo said that the reason he has more sass in his interactions with the NPC's in BOTW (and just how he talks to them at all) is because being in cryosleep for a century and losing his memories made him also lose the conviction to silently bear the burden of being a hero.
Well that's what I figured too. Your personality is formed based on your memories, interactions, and experiences. Link could barley remember his own name when he woke up, so it makes sense. I imagine he wasn't anything like that before the calamity. He's like a totally different person now.

I like how link is silent. However, I think if they were going to give him a voice actor and have him talk just a few times, it would leave such an impact in the player because they know how little he talks, so when he does talk its a big deal. But overall I like that he is silent, especially when Zelda is always around talking.

It's depressing that the only time he speaks with others often is when he's lost all his memories of his past and doesn't remember what happened to his life. From what we've been told about Link, it seems like he has depression, but won't acknowledge it or voice his issues to seek help, simply out a need to not be a "burden". I can't even imagine how much trauma Link has faced in his life for him to have this personality. I may be diving a bit too deep into this, but after all that time bottling up his emotions and never getting anything out, wouldn't the bottle shatter at some point from the pressure?
Hes probley seen some major shit and went through 1bil hard ships for all we know.

@Sam Toombs well, consider this.. being labeled the hero of hyrule itself is a burden in and of itself. So to meet that title when he's not shown any reason why to be considered that he probably went under some extreme training. Part of this would instill the notion that as a "hero" and guardian to the princess (and thus hyrule) to voice any troubles or concerns would ruin the image of a hero. Also think how it could cause panic/concern among the people of hyrule to here their hero/champion is struggling, has issues, etc.
It could be anything really, from the same concerns Zelda had on how is she going to seal Ganon when she never showed she had the power, to questioning if the plan will work considering how this Ganon has the ability to subject almost anything to his will. Nothing seriously shows trauma to him (beyond BotW out right saying he failed and nearly died to Ganon in many of the games as being a reincarnation of the hero he doesn't have previous lifetime memories.
Yes, Zelda can at times remember previous lives but i think that's because the royal family blood line has some goddess blood in it making it so she can peer into them if trained.. otherwise they come as visions in a dream which can enveloped Link as well.

in botw he told Zelda that he decides not to speak because of discomfort, he doesn’t appreciate the situation he’s in so he doesn’t deem it worth of speech, that’s basically what he says. And you can find that in zeldas diary in her room in hurdle castle on botw. Idk why all of the other links speak though

This is the only game I play with a silent protagonist. Not the only game I've played. Chrono Cross was another and I did the same thing with Serge that I did with Link. He was me.

One of the reasons why I find this game’s story to be interesting is that the player is strictly named Link. In the other games’ timelines, the option of naming the players differently really set those games apart, and in BotW, I feel like this Link is the true heart of them all because of how his character in general is told through his relationship with Zelda. ALTTP, OoT, MM, TP, and SS immediately establishes the two as already being close with one another and of course Link didn’t talk then either, but he still carried out his duties nonetheless. Here, his relationship with Zelda feels a lot more natural and all the memories prove that he’s more of a man of action than words. He knows he’s got a ton of weight on his shoulders, but he’s smart enough to not let that get in the way of protecting Zelda. If Link were to talk, I don’t think it would ruin the series, but he better have the right voice.
He didn’t have a strong relationship with Zelda at the beginning of Twilight Princess. They hardly knew each other throughout most of the game.

so true though. I loved the way the memories delivered that emotional connection, it's what made me feel attached to these two characters. Link's silence might play a role in that, but I wouldn't mind seeing him talk a little as an experiment, so long as he has the right voice

Since, I can just give him any name I want and the game wouldn't even care.
My entire life I just knew that Link had either a form of anxiety, depression and PTSD.
But it made me cry when I read Zelda's diary, even though I knew the answer, it made me hurt for Link (and all the other Links before him)

In one of the memories, Zelda says, “‘Be sure to take the time to soothe your Mount... That’s the only way it will know you truly feel.” Your advice was quite helpful.’
They literally put quotations around Links advice, suggesting he said this word for word. Again you’re not hearing this in Link’s voice, but you are hearing his thoughts. So yeah, yet another way Breath of the Wild introduces you to Link’s true character.

Wind Waker Link is also really "talkative" (and I don't just mean the 'come on!' sound clip.) So many games where his responses are just 'yes' and 'no,' but in that one there's snark, and a decent dialogue tree with one character. That Link is a chatterbox!

So, long story short, Link is selectively mute and has anxiety. Gotta give him even more respect, he can save the entire world while I can't even order my food without shaking at the thought of talking to somebody.
(And the "projecting yourself onto Link," thing might explain why I see him as a fidgety, anxious, hyperactive person. I fidget with my hands when nervous, and I guess I just kinda thought Link would too, especially since he sometimes rubs the back of his neck when embarrassed. I'm also very hyperactive around people I'm comfortable around, so I kinda thought Link would do so too.)

I see link as a character unlike myself as I am very talkative and lazy, while Link is silent. I see him as a person who doesn’t understand why they were chosen for this, but does it anyway and begins to get used to it. He doesn’t talk because he doesn’t want to seem as though he doesn’t fit with the job. That’s what i think, anyway.
It’s really interesting to see the different ways we project ourselves onto him as players. I always see him as very androgynous and at times nonbinary, and enjoy that he wears men and women’s clothing, since I myself am very androgynous (I remember how excited I was to learn were the same height). The anxiety is so relatable, I can 100% see it.

He talked once in Windwaker. he says C'mon to the hopping statue you can control
which means that yes, he can talk. He just chooses not to.
Though granted, one could say that he talks when you make choices. Like "paraglider, Please?" While yes you could give him a voice for saying that, but a lot of times when there are multiple dialogue options it's either boring and tedious to hear the protag parrot what you just told him to say... or infuriating when he says what you told him to say but in some way you didn't expect him to say it. This stops that from happening and doesn't upset the fans (more so if people give him different voices for each game. I mean, I'm sure everyone was a bit shocked to hear this Princess Zelda is decidedly BRITISH.
I still feel that the reason that he chooses not to talk (and seriously, i missed that diary of pricess zelda's in the castle.. whoops) is because he was Shiekah trained and told that as a servant (to be forever princess Zelda's guardian) he's to not speak. Though in BotW current day (aka post-rejuvination) i thought it was that the severity of the damage on his last defeat to ganon caused his vocal chords to be irreparably damaged (but i realize also that makes no sense since he talks.. to make decisions.. like asking for the paraglider.. chop it up to text-to voice command from said shiekah slate (hence why everyone notices it).. but i digress) and even the shiekah healing pod couldn't repair it.
I guess that makes sense....

HOw many games have you played where you were a bit bored/annoyed with the protag saying word for word what you just chose for him?
How many games have you chosen a dialogue prompt only to have the protag say it in a way you totally didn't mean it/think it would come out as?
Both are annoying, so just keep Link's speech to terse yet polite (even though saying "Bye.." to the first person you meet is kinda rude.. more so when they greet you) responses like they had for all of BotW diologue choices is perfectly fine.
He can be both courageous and silent at the same time. And there are some cultures where a servent (like a body guard to the princess) is held in higher regard for dutifully carring out their task in silence. More so when it's a guard. Which is, again, perfectly fine. Everyone's "oh he's just shy" is.. eeh.. stupid.

I think it would be pretty cursed if Link just started speaking in full sentences next game , but I could see him quietly murmuring short sentences in certain situations. Kind of like he already does in the dialogue options but with voice acting.

In "the legend of Zelda 2: the adventure of Link", Link can speak quoted words when interacting the table in Saria town and a fireplace, in Lurelin village he speaks quoted words when interacting the grilled fish, in Botw Japanese version, if you read Link's quest log, it's written in Link's perspective.
Link is the physical embodiment of "actions speak a lot louder than words"
Well, many people already pointed that out, but I agree Link could’ve said “Yes” as his first ever voice-acted line at the end of the final fight when Zelda asks him if he remembers her. That would, of course, only be in the “true ending” scenario, where Link got all memories.
Alternatively, if we don’t want him to say any actually words, a simple nod like he does in Skyward Sword.

He also says “Yay!”
In my view Link isn't even a character, he's just a vessel, an avatar just like Red from Pokémon. A vessel for the player to project himself into.
It is true than there's a lore reason given in BotW, however the way that works is to make Link part of the world he's into. He still doesn't have anything of himself.
Everything he gets is from the player himself.
Fair, but link is given plenty of pretty consistent character from across the games.

I love this video! It gave me a lot of perspective when it comes to Link's character.
I would love if the creator give him a tiny bit of dialogue in the sequel. For example, there is a cut scene with Link and Zelda at the end of the sequel.
Zelda and Link are at a shine dedicated to her father and the champions, Zelda and Link are there saying a prayer.
Zelda finishes before Link, turns to face him and says "we have finally brought peace to the ones we have lost".
Link would turn around, take a deep breath, look at her in the eyes and just say "yeah" and they both smile at each other.
That would be amazing!
i kinda like him as the silent strong and stoic hero. and I still feel that he does talk (what do you think all those dialogue choices are in BotW? they just didn't give him a VA.)
That being said.. if it's something terse and heart felt.. like the above... Yeah. I can go with that.
BUt like someone else stated.. him just saying "fuck" when he realizes ganon's alive again.. uuuuggggh.. no. I mean hell, they've not had any other character in the series in any of the games say hell/heck/fuck/shit/*insert any other surprised angry expletive deletive here* and he's been just as dignified and refined as Zelda in every game.. To make him say something like that would debase his character right away.
I really like the neutral nature of link, and not speaking fits that. He’s a really great character
I like how it also showed joker as the silent protagonist I can’t wait till Persona 5 scramble :D

In Smash Bros we see Link wield a Beam Sword, Killing Edge as well as his Master Sword so it's close enough!

I've personally never put myself into a character or pretended it was from my point of view. I love it when characters have a unique personality that you can watch develop as you play the game! I'm hoping in the sequel to botw, link will show a lot more expressions and personality as he's fufilled his role and the amnesia made him a bit more sarcastic and humorous :)
I want link to only say small things. Maybe he’s growing more confidence and he can say stuff like “look” “over there” “thank you” “I know” “it’s ok” etc.
