My boyfriend and I went to see this last night, and when Pearl had her monologue we looked at one another like, "holy.... shit....." It's a 10/10 for both of us. So much fun to watch.
We understand why Pearl detests blondes! If you don’t remember why(think back to her audition in the movie and what the male judge said, then think of the scene in X between her and Brittany Snow at the lake plus her sister-in-law).
@@Whackadoo1 someone pointed out how, when Howard first sees the crew, he keeps staring at Maxine. Wayne gets kind of defensive and alludes to the fact that he hasn’t seen anything beautiful like Maxine in years. But is he actually staring at her because she looks just like Pearl? Do others see it or is it literally just a theatrical metaphor how they’re different characters but the same person?
Omg the beginning I also have dark hair and light ass brows 😭😭 but I absolutely lovedddd Pearl! It was so good I can’t wait to rewatch it and for the third one
When i was at the theater for Barbarian, the trailer for Pearl played saying “Coming Soon…” but it was… literally showing in the room next to us? Hahaha
Hands down my favorite movie of the year! Pearl as a character is just amazing and she is my joker. Mia goth is now becoming one of my favorites actors every. Im really curious as to what the horror elements will be in maXXXine tho
I'm glad to know it can be a stand alone watch since I wasn't really interested in watching X due to sxl aspect of it. I loved Barbarian too! Literally started watching your review and when you said to see it first I paused and went to the theater 😆

WARNING: SPOILERS! I watched X yesterday and Pearl today and loves both. I was a big fan of the oddly comforting Pearl moments in X. It definitely made me already endeared to the character. If I had watched them in reverse, I think I would have lost it when Pearl kills RJ in X and then starts dancing. I thought it was haunting the first time but now with so much background I need to see it again.
Omg yassss stunning queen. Giving Pearl vibes for sure. This movie was awesome and Mia Goth was giving everything. Her monologue was Academy Award winning all on its own. It’s right there with X as my favorite of the whole year. I mean Barbarian is number 1, X is number 2, Pearl is number 3, Scream 2022 is number 4, and number 5 is Bodies Bodies Bodies
I thought you looked different in the thumbnail. X was pretty good, looking forward to Pearl. House of the Devil is an all time fav horror of mine, glad Ty West is blowing up.
I think the thing about Barbarian is that it is more deceitful than shocking to me. It felt more like omission than a clever twist. And what they omitted is not that original. It's basically a more messed up Mama.
Mia Goth not winning an award for Pearl shows the discrimination against horror films. Boycott all awards until they give her the recognition she deserves.
What scene would you want to cut out? I can’t tell if I liked it or not. It was definitely different. Also I loved Mia Goth. But I think I liked X more. I definitely got Wizard of oz vibes in the beginning
Looking forward to seeing Pearl, then Maxine. I did enjoy X, all though it was well done, it was predictable. I do like Mia Goth. I believe she was in Nymphomaniac ll, which I did enjoy. Will watch Barbarian. Thank you for the review.
I love both. I prefer Barbarian a little more because The twist factor. I didnt see a lot of people that didnt like barbarian. The ratings are really high for that.
I had a good time and it made me feel things. The trauma and pain she went through was very relatable and upsetting. The choices she makes not so relatable thank God but it made sense. The end was creepy and unsettling. It was compelling and kept my attention the whole time
Watched this today. Easily the best horror movie of the year. My fave horror movie since Hereditary. This is an instant classic. Mia goth really needs Oscar consideration.
i'm so mad that both X nor Pearl aren't screening in france, or at least where i live (because here if you're not in paris there's barely any screening of "alternative/niche" movies 🙄🙄) same for barbarian there's no release date at all, not even for online rent/dvd
I freakin' loved this movie. The score and cinematography were amazing. Mia Goth deserves an Oscar nomination for this (which sadly she most likely won't get). Between this and X, I don't which one I love more, but I think Pearl might win by a razor's edge.
"Pearl" was excellent, much better than I anticipated. I liked "X" but I thought "Pearl" was a much better movie overall. This was easily one of my favorites of the year. So far "Pearl", "Barbarian", "The Watcher", "Resurrection", "Fresh", and "The Innocents" are my faves this year. So many talented directors and writers making amazing horror movies right now.
After reading and watching several of these reviews, I went to the theatre and watched this film. I honestly don’t understand the hype or praise. As a horror film it didn’t work. There was no suspense, little to no gore, and nothing that was scary or even disturbing to be honest. I thought this was boring. As a drama piece this was decent, as a horror/thriller film it’s trash.
I'm amazed at how many people believe "bad", "sucks", "not bloody enough", etc, are objective facts rather than subjective opinions. If you want predictable plotlines, gratuitous gore for the sake of it, two dimensional characters, cgi monsters, tired/outdated tropes, cheesy jump scares, and being led like a child through a film, this one is not for you. From what I'm seeing in the comments, many people think the criteria for a horror film are everything listed above, ad nauseam. If these tenets are what is important to a person, they obviously have preconceived notions of what they want to experience before going in. In that case, I would suggest staying with mainstream horror, because this is not it. I like this film for the same reason I like The Shining - Many said it was boring, too slow, not really a horror movie when it debuted, but all these years later, it is regarded as a cinematic masterpiece. This is not a corny slasher movie, but rather a deep, psychological interpretation of isolation and despair through the lens of war abroad, a paranoid society due to a pandemic, loneliness, delusions of grandeur, and severe dysfunction. Can anyone relate with that? If not, these last two years must have been Disneyland for you. This is not a blood and guts movie, made for sadistic teenagers. It is a psychological, introspective mindf*ck that really requires a mature understanding of what makes people do what they do and why they do it. Again, if you want b-movie payoffs and a plot that does your thinking for you, beware, because this one isn't for you. It's a character study and a damn creepy one. I love it, but that doesn't make it objectively "good." Put on your big boy pants for this one, or go watch something else that contains things that people have already seen. And Mia improvised the ending, so do what you will with that.
I just felt like it was missing something... Maybe a nightmare of a tornado would’ve been cool. I’ve had one and it was honestly terrifying, plus goes with the wizard of oz theme. There could’ve been a “wicked witch” encounter where she makes a deal to become famous. Maybe pearl tries to sacrifice a stranger by sneaking into his house, but wakes him up and has to escape. There was almost no suspense or jump scares.
THE NINE MINUTE MONOLOGUE!!!?? Not even gonna lie I cried through it. Pearl’s emotions about wanting to be loved, really hit the nail on the head for how I feel sometimes. So powerful.
@@Mysteriuminiquitatis1998 saaaame dude, i watched this while in a depressive episode and i could not relate more i cried and cried even harder when i realized my feelings are only being validated by a literal murderer lmaoooo
I can’t believe you didn’t mention that iconic FINAL SHOT for the end credit sequence. By far the most brilliant and disturbing final shot in a horror movie I ever seen. That scene alone is Oscar worthy from Mia Goth. Absolutely staggering.
Did you know that ending was unplanned? It wasn’t in the script! Ti West said, “That was just a random experimental idea that I was like, ‘Let’s try this, see what happens.’ Then she did that, and after watching it for three minutes, I said, “Cut. That’s great. We’re going to put that in the movie, and let’s go back to work now.’
I generally like when villains in movies are humanized as long as doing so doesn’t compromise the villain’s status as a villain (ie; don’t try to justify their actions, just make them feel like a person instead of a caricature)
The Devils Rejects made you have feelings for a family of deranged serial killers esp. toward the ending of the movie. I cried during Freebird playing on the radio as they went on together towards death. Still an amazing film showing villainy and human emotion together. Great Review! I also enjoyed this ! Been a fan of Ty since Abc’s of death and onto Vhs. The Innkeepers omg brilliant piece like a 70s artsy piece about youth coming of age film like japanese crazy film from 77 House.
Mia Goth is a wonderful actress, so glad she’s finally getting the recognition she deserves. Loved X, but have to say I loved Pearl more! Very excited for Maxxxine
When you said that you didn’t even realize that the horror wasn’t really in pearl until your partner pointed it out I felt that so hard. I didn’t even realize because I was in love so much until my friend I went with pointed it out
Pearl topped X and Barbarian for me and this is coming from someone who loves your typical slasher films. I just love character driven films especially when taking placed in the early 1900s. Pearl is Mia Goth’s film and she deserves all the praises she’s getting. Pearl is in my top 5 favorite horror films of the year. I give it a 4.8/5
Glad to see Ti West finally getting a bit more recognition. He was one of the directors who kicked off the horror revival in the early 2010's with The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers but for some reason people kind of forgot about him. He's a first rate director. He also films right here in Connecticut. I got to see the Yankee Peddler Inn up close.
This is the review I was waiting for!! Pearl was sososo good. I love how Ti West can transport his viewers to different time periods. He did that so well in House of the Devil and Pearl.
I truly wonder what exactly the plot of Maxxxine will be cause in a article it said it’ll be about how homemade movies have affected people or something along those lines. Like will it still have slasher elements like X and Pearl cause the antagonist Pearl is dead so unless Maxine becomes the killer I have no idea Wtf is gonna happen💀
@@xs0ftx3 like the way Pearl said at the end of X “You’re gonna end up just like me” and “It’ll all be taken from you”. So if Maxine truly ends up the way Pearl did then yup it’ll be a tale of two souls growing up in different eras but ending up the same.
It seems like A24 is growing on you this year! You’ve loved like every single one that came out (except men) and that’s definitely a higher rate than in the past. But between X, EEAAO, and Pearl, A24 is dominating this year
I haven’t seen Mia Goth in anything but A Cure for Wellness (HIGHLY underrated btw) and Nymphomaniac. She legit seems kinda crazy to me so she seemingly can do these roles well 🤪
The monologue at the end was epic. It was also kind of hilarious considering the context. The scene that followed was probably the scariest part of the movie. I think villain origin stories don't work if they only kill off unlikable characters.
I absolutely loved this movie now I don’t think it was as good as X for me personally cause it had more horror and gore but that’s really the only nitpick for Pearl. Mia Goff truly turned it out like I thought she was good in X but she was amazing in Pearl that 5 min monologue was fantastic it felt like that Toni C scene from that Hereditary dinner scene rant . The fact we got two amazing horror prequels with orphan first kill and Pearl. I’m hoping TI west can wrap up this trilogy nicely with Maxxxine. This felt like if wizard of oz went into the horror genre cause it was a period piece fs.
not sure where you are from, im from eastern europe and live in london currently. As far as i know x didnt even get a theatrical release in either of those i fear pearl is gonna be the same which is so stupid in my opnion. I think its only limiting potential income for the studios to leave us out because someone is gonna upload it online eventually.
@@Getov3r1ttt I live in the UK and I swear I never knew anything about X until months after it realeased, I don't even think it came out here in the UK. I really hope Pearl is released here soon.
i’m really a fan of the style you’ve cultivated with these videos! I like the natural conversational feel it has! I don’t like when it feels so scripted to the point of it sounding like a professionally written review on imdb or something
omg yes it’s here!! watched this on friday and I was waiting for your review!! absolutely loved it and mia goth deserves award recognition for her performance. the six minute monologue and the end credits were breathtaking and tragic.
It’s insane how Pearl has skyrocketed to my number one spot in regards to favorite movies. Hereditary has officially been dethroned for me. Maxine and Pearl are two of the most captivating and unique horror characters I’ve seen in so long, they’ve become my favorite final girl and villain respectively. Needless to say, I loved Pearl more than X, even though I still really really loved X. Barbarian I’m still unsure on my feelings for it, I need to rewatch it. Gonna rewatch Pearl first though since my theater is bound to lose it first. Also needless to say, I can’t fucking wait for MaXXXine
I just finish watching Pearl and I love it. Personally it was way more entertaining than X which to me wasn't it. But kinda glad I watch it X first then Pearl
I feel like Pearl almost makes X better now. Wasn't crazy about X either when I first saw it but now I have a newfound appreciation for it after loving Pearl so much.
I’m going to Pearl on Tuesday. I think I might go see Barbarian again (for a third time) after Pearl. I should rewatch X before as well. Gosh it’s a good time to be a horror fan!
mia goth in this was outstanding, best acting in any horror, almost oscar worthy,6/5,liked barbarian but think this was better just because of the acting.
Mia Goth was unbelievably fantastic in this movie like Oscar worthy. Ive fell in love with as an actress since Suspirira and she literally never bad in anything she in but this is her best work by far
"Pearl" is just outstanding. Even if you're not a horror geek it's just brilliant. I loved "X" but I think "Pearl" is quite a bit better. Some studio really needs to give Ti West a good story and buckets of money and let him run with it. Mia Goth, holy crap she just owns this role. It's truly an Oscar worthy performance but of course that won't happen. I don't think she exactly nailed her accent but not so much it was a problem.
Love this movie!!!! One of the best horror films I've ever seen, X was amazing as well!!! Can't wait for MaXXXine!! I have to be at work at 4AM, and wake up at 2AM to get ready for work I actually stayed up late on Thursday night to see this movie when it opened and went to work tired the next day it was totally worth it!!!!!
I kind of empathized with Pearl, but as someone with OCD who is obsessed with everything horror, I often gaslight myself throughout these experiences. So…That’s fun. Pearl’s a 5/5 for me though. Among my favorite movies for sure. X too.
I am so glad to see someone who has OCD watched this. I mean I'm sorry you have OCD as well and have to deal with it. But I've really been wanting to watch these but I'm so afraid of things sticking with me and then having intrusive thoughts later on about what I just watched.
X was kinda meh for me but I LOVED Pearl! Also tied with Barbarian for my favorite of the year. Mia Goth is incredible, at this point I’ll watch her in anything
I really like when your reviews have spoilers because I usually view all information about a movie as a spoiler aside from the title and poster haha. So I like getting the full download after I watch it. Bringing back the spoiler section would be fun!
Yessssssssssss we are on the same page again! I *loved* Pearl! Mia Goth was amazing, and the supporting cast was also superb in how they played off her. I’m so hyped for Maxxxine. I think the through line of p*rnos through time is so interesting too. Ti West is showing his range with these movies with such exquisite attention to detail across different eras of filmmaking.
There's no indication that Pearl ever killed again during the space of time between movies. Maybe she did but with her husband home it seemed she had went on to live a normal farm life.
Idk I kinda disagree. Because her dialogue with Howard suggests that it’s kind of a regular thing. Between the car in the swamp, the (Mostly) naked guy in the cellar, and Howard telling her that he saved someone in the cellar for her (Lorraine)…the pure understanding between the two suggests that it’s not a one off kinda deal. It suggests that it’s a regular thing. Like, no one is safe once they get on that farm. Also, narratively speaking, Howard would have needed a long, long time adjusting to Pearl’s psychopathic/psychosexual needs, so I feel like this is definitely not the first time it’s happened because he seems relatively calm about the matter. Clearly the situation has reached a head because the catalyst is Howard not getting nasty with Pearl. But I definitely feel like this isn’t a new thing. That’s just my opinion though!!! Definitely up for other’s opinions!
I loved Pearl, but I do think X was better. I would like to have seen more development of her husband and what lead them to the events of X. However, still both fantastic movies and if pearl was a serial killer in the 80s shed be up there with Freddy and Jason
I thought PEARL was great. So unique and so colorful. A true throwback to 50s horror and Mia Goth slayed the role. However, I much prefer BARBARIAN. It's just more my type of plot and I like a lot of disturbing stuff in my horror. Both are must watches though.

I give it a 4.8/5
Barbarian better

Glad to see Ti West finally getting a bit more recognition. He was one of the directors who kicked off the horror revival in the early 2010's with The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers but for some reason people kind of forgot about him. He's a first rate director. He also films right here in Connecticut. I got to see the Yankee Peddler Inn up close.
I didn’t know any of these were filmed in CT! That’s super cool, really weird to think of my state in any movie at all.
@@BrandonJames2016 maybe Maxine got a taste for blood lol
@@xs0ftx3 like the way Pearl said at the end of X “You’re gonna end up just like me” and “It’ll all be taken from you”. So if Maxine truly ends up the way Pearl did then yup it’ll be a tale of two souls growing up in different eras but ending up the same.
It seems like A24 is growing on you this year! You’ve loved like every single one that came out (except men) and that’s definitely a higher rate than in the past. But between X, EEAAO, and Pearl, A24 is dominating this year
Bodies, Bodies, Bodies was also a solid good time.
@@Whackadoo1 exactly there are so many good A24 movies this year I forgot some
I haven’t seen Mia Goth in anything but A Cure for Wellness (HIGHLY underrated btw) and Nymphomaniac.
Yeah I got wizard of oz vibes mixed with psycho if psycho had a lead up to how Norman got messed up
the ending credits… so iconic
Cannot wait to see Pearl, it’s easily my most anticipated film of the year. Gutted the international rollout is so slow, not even dated yet!
not sure where you are from, im from eastern europe and live in london currently. As far as i know x didnt even get a theatrical release in either of those i fear pearl is gonna be the same which is so stupid in my opnion. I think its only limiting potential income for the studios to leave us out because someone is gonna upload it online eventually.
@@Getov3r1ttt From the U.K. too, where luckily X got a pretty wide theatrical release so 🤞🏻 for Pearl
@@lewispowell6015 when did X come out in the uk theaters ?
@@Getov3r1ttt same day as the US, March 18th
@@Getov3r1ttt I live in the UK and I swear I never knew anything about X until months after it realeased, I don't even think it came out here in the UK. I really hope Pearl is released here soon.
Mia goth is an absolutely enchanting actress and I can’t wait to see more from her.
i’m really a fan of the style you’ve cultivated with these videos!
Pearl was so AMAZING!!! I loved every single second of it
She nailed Mia Goth's look perfectly
i really appreciated how bright and colorful this movie was. shows that you don't always need to go darker, and grayer to make a great horror movie.
seeing your videos on my recommended page at the end of the day is like a reward hehe
Mia Goth is pretty to me 😍 her face is pretty to me in this!
I also can’t believe I saw barbarian and pearl in the same week! I loved both of them!!
I liked X, but I was NOT expecting to be obsessed with this movie
mia goth in this was outstanding, best acting in any horror, almost oscar worthy,6/5,liked barbarian but think this was better just because of the acting.
Pearl was really good. I agree that I would have enjoyed it more without watching the trailer first
Mia Goth was unbelievably fantastic in this movie like Oscar worthy. Ive fell in love with as an actress since Suspirira and she literally never bad in anything she in but this is her best work by far
"Pearl" is just outstanding. Even if you're not a horror geek it's just brilliant. I loved "X" but I think "Pearl" is quite a bit better. Some studio really needs to give Ti West a
good story and buckets of money and let him run with it.
Pearl is the story of a woman suffering from bipolar in
It’s Pearl>Terrifier 2>>>>>>>>>>>>Barbarian for me
Yessssssssssss we are on the same page again!
Happy Sunday 💘💋👼🏻🍁🎥🖤🧡🖤🧡😎
I enjoyed Pearl, I saw it last night! Although, I think I enjoyed Barbarian more! 😢
Although I will throw in, I might need to watch Pearl again. The couple behind me talked THE ENTIRE TIME
My grandma was named Pearl so I have to watch this. Seriously I need to catch up on my horror! I've missed so many good ones this year!
I'm seeing this later today with my friend, I'm so excited!
I really enjoyed Pearl! The way it was filmed felt like a twisted Wizard of Oz. Interested to see what they’ll do with Maxxxine
